  • Dear All,
    Back to the Land Rover today and its time to take off the roof for the summer!
    Been wanting to do this for some time, but it took a while to find the right parts to do
    it safely, namely the seat belt bar.
    I hope you enjoy the video and that it helps you if your doing the same thing.
    Regards Joël

    Mine has the wheel on the bonnet - I love it!

      Hi Steve, great stuff. It creates so much space inside.

    Fantastic - I might take the roof off mine [looks out window at typical English summer weather] errr maybe not...

      Just go for it. It’s worth it for that one evening you actually get to drive it!

    Your Landy looks awesome roofless Joel, the spare on the bonnet will be the cherry on top. Good job.

    2 suggestions....
    1 - put a small unobtrusive line/ mark or sticker on the window frame where your balance point is, that way you wont be messing around in the future (because you know you will)
    2 - as an engineer you must know somebody who does 3D printing, ask them to print you a new cover in something flexible to replace the damaged side strap and perhaps to replace that missing bolt cover too
    Other than that the old landie looks great and thats the exact same ghetto set up I would have used to get the roof off on my own

      Thanks Scott, excellent suggestions. That’s why I love sharing stuff on RUclips, the ideas that come are excellent. Sometimes I think, why didn’t I think of that. Have a good weekend. 👍

    Hi Joel, there were never any camel trophy trucks with soft tops so I wouldn't believe that seat belt bar came from an ex camel trophy truck

    • @My911
      @My911  3 года назад

      Hi Mike, you know your stuff and you are of course correct. I spoke to the seller again not long ago with the same hunch and he said it was actually a replica Camel Trophy so I guess that explains it. I guess a Trophy vehicle with a rag top would be very dangerous!

    Looks great. It's a shame Land Rover never made a seat belt bar like that which remained in place with the roof refitted. It would save a lot of fiddling on removal and install! You might want to head to the nearest shelter if it starts to rain. I speak from experience as a 20 year Mini Moke owner. My Moke has a top but it takes about 10mins to assemble so I'm usually soaked. :D

    Great job Sir.
    I kind of like the roof removal system... I've definitely seen worse... And as a back patient, just WATCHING you muscle it out last time, sent me running for my pain pills.... Ouch. Definitely seen worse.
    Now, I'm not a structural engineer, but... Those roof raters would hold it, I would guess. What is it, 200 pounds?? That roof literally holds tons of snow, in the winter.... Ask around, see what people say.... if you hung down 4 of those straps, ran 2 pieces of wood through the top... That would be, a pretty neat & tidy setup. And with the roof on, just leave the straps hang, for the next time.... Feels less sketchy than the 2 ladders....
    The spare on the hood! Sorry, the bonnet... Heh heh! So British.... Just kidding, that's kind of a cool idea.... the other thing that gets me every time is, being from the USA, you say "okay, I'm gonna pull forward now", and then you walk right past the driver's door... It's like, where is he going??? And then you go get in the wrong side of the truck... Oh yeah, right hand drive, right right... Not sure I would love the spare on the hood personally... In the USA, people hang those on the back all the time... There has to be a way to do that, isn't there? Swinging bracket, so you can still use the doors???
    Anyways, nice job on this one.

      Thanks Patrick, nice to hear from you and I hope you are well. I guess you are right about the snow/weight. I will look into a pulley System maybe. It would be much easier just to have a system in place. There is an OE rear wheel swing arm available but I have already opted for the bonnet. ;)

    Not dodgy at all! Maybe later have straps hanging from the ceiling with pulleys to lift it high up and out of the way and eliminate the ladders!

    • @My911
      @My911  3 года назад +1

      That would be ideal. Just not sure if the ceiling can rake it...

    • @My911

      @ruaraidhmcdonald-walker9524 3 года назад +1

      @@My911 Definitely more than a washer. Should really be a piece of decent flat plate the same size as the part above and thicker. It’s going through thin steel, you don’t want it to pull through.

  • @iosilver9920

    Looks great.
    Have you considered getting a bracket made that holds the wheel and clamps to the cross bar?
    Or extending the original wheel clamp mech?

    • @My911
      @My911  3 года назад +1

      Hi, it’s a good idea, but with the spare on the bonnet (see Insta) I am glad of the space in the back. In those rare occasions that the kids and their friends come with me it helps.

    • @iosilver9920
      @iosilver9920 3 года назад

      @@My911 absolutely. I reckon you could make a stainless bracket for the bonnet with some plate and Allthread.

    • @thebnicho
      @thebnicho 3 года назад

      @@My911 You might want to sit the spare on the bonnet first and try it as I found the vision loss annoying. If you decide you no longer need the bulkhead spare wheel bracket I would be interested in it. Mine went missing before I bought the car when a dodgy rear door wheel carrier was fitted. I'd love to put it back the way it was originally. That bracket does not seem to exist in Australia.

    Been watching many of your videos--they are great. What is the liner used in your hard top? Thanks

    • @My911
      @My911  2 года назад

      Hi Patrick, thank you. Which liner do you mean?

    • @patrickward1783
      @patrickward1783 2 года назад +1

      @@My911 It looks like you might have a hard liner inside your hardtop. I’ve seen some from LaSalle, and was wondering if that is what you are using and whether you like it. Perhaps you have no liner at all (I couldn’t tell)

    • @My911
      @My911  2 года назад +1

      Hi Patrick, I understand. I don’t have a liner. I did want one originally, but have settled without one for now. It took so much time and effort to remove all of the glue the previous owner put on, that I was reluctant to do it again. That said, it would be a lot quieter if I stuck some sound deadening in. Maybe one day. 👍
