I was at Mike’s shop a few weeks ago. It was a real thrill. His work is absolutely spectacular, and his knowledge of the series trucks is incredible. Thanks Mike for your generosity of time and information - much appreciated!
Thank You so much for taking me along with Your perfectly restored Landy. It is my dream since I was 9 years old and nothing had changed within the last 58 years.
Thank you so much for unlocking memories of the Series IIA, my father bought one new in 1963 and we used it as our only family vehicle for a few years and sadly it was sold in 1986, which I had kept it but I was away at the time. The differences were that the hot air supply to the windshield was via some tapered nozzles not the boxy ones you have, and it had no overdrive ("Fairey?") and the heater was a round shaped radiator with a couple of small doors on the front which could be opened. But all the functionality of the wiper moters, the ignition, and the four wheel driver system are all still in my head although not referenced for many years. I think I need to get one!
Very good presentation of a beautifully restored example. You are the first owner/user I have seen on RUclips who actually knows how the transfer-box levers work. I think though that you have to explain to the uninitiated that both the Overdrive unit and the Free-wheeling-hubs are aftermarket and not standard equipment. Last comment is I believe a bonnet meant to take the spare wheel is slightly dished so that the wheel mounts a little lower to less obstruct a (short) driver's view. Yours looks like a standard bonnet.
Your efforts to restore an icon are clear. The final product is outstanding. Your pride, passion and presentation are to be highly commended. Well done all round.
Far the best Land Rover Series videos on the web, all the Best, my Land Rover's 1957 SWB Series I, 1964 SWB Series IIa, 3 SWB Series III made by Santa Ana 78, 79, 80, 1977 SWB Series III, 1978 CKD Venezuela Range Rover
Wow, so that's all things I should know about series Land Rover, and You've explained it in crystal clear. I used to come along when My father drove My grandfather's 109" 1960 series II, it's when I was 2 until 8 years old. Last but not least, superb restoration You made in this series Land Rover, it's absolutely amazing. Well Done....
Not really. That's just the basic stuff. There's another in the background at 17:03 with a few of the optional extras removed. Then there's all the accessories
If the bugger doesn't want to go into first or reverse first try, don't force it or sod-around halving the clutch. Select second gear and then she'll happily drop into fist or reverse.
Interesting that US Land Rovers have both window glasses slide, in Australia, only the rear pane slid. The covers over the chains to the tailgate were an anti rattle measure. Owned many Land rovers over the years.
did you put a series 3 gearbox in it ? series 2s have no synchro on 1&2nd which is lovely for low speed work where you dont want to be clutching all the time.nice touch to retrofit a combined oil and temp guage
Bit of space for stuff behind seat backs as well. Also I doubt you were doing 62. I could still hear you! Going by the tomtom in mine the speedos waggling about in the region of 55 , doing about 47 in real life! ( correct speedo head ,on 7.50x16s in my 1961 LWB. Nice resto. You know what you're talking about. 👍👍
Wonderful looking and sounding truck. Thanks for posting this video for us "Newbie's" to the world of Rovers. If you were driving down a steep hill, how would you use the gearing to control speed? Can a Rover engine take the stress a couple mile descent?
they can take serious work but not abuse don't let it over rev down hill . I f you use low box for descents it is more than capable of controlled decent even being pushed by a loaded trailer. the limitation of the series land rovers was the rover axle with its susceptible Half shafts that again are very capable but not tolerant of fools driving them jerkily as they will break in the diff, that said I have regularly towed 7000 lb trailers with mine over many years and NEVER broken a shaft. so its all in the technique
Hello, awesome work as usual! Could you tell me where you got the military plug adapter? I’ve been looking for awhile and can’t seem to find one. Thanks
What tyer pressures do u run at? Also is the steering easy? Coz i have a series three and my steering is proper heavy, its ok whilst driving, but at low speeds i have to yank on it
Just an observation, if you are coming up to a red traffic light or a stop sign. It is bad practice to change down through the gears, you should use your brakes, as it is cheaper to replace brake linings than transmissions. As you are putting unnecessary strain on the gearbox.
such a nice piece of automotive legend... I owned a 1963 109 Series IIA, and as most british cars it was not very reliable and had many odd and bad features but at the same time lots and lots of charm! I love Landies, too bad they ruined this brand with the new "Pretender"... we were hoping for a working tool and they produced an overpriced Discovery 2.0! (complicate electronics for your saturday safari to the shopping mall) Too bad! for me it is definitively over with Land Rover, now I moved to Toyota (Series 70)!!! But if I would have some extra dimes in the pocket I would surely also buy a Landie Series I or IIA! just for the fun
the overdrive and bigger tyres make all the difference to any sort of speed over 50mph.i see its not a fairly one? romer?nice n quiet .Weber carb makes a difference to, speed and mpg. tho the original solex pa 40 was good for low speed and smooth tick over , but the weber is a good modern upgrade. a well set up 4 cly engine should give reasonable performance ,but no way near big modern turbo diesels,, but who want one of them!!
Just ignore 1st gear and go straight into 2nd. Turn the heater on to stop it overheating. Don't go above 50. Your driving terrified me... do you realise how easily those things roll over?
I don't recommend starting in 2nd with oversized tires. I do 100 test drive miles on every Series we build which includes bringing it up to 70mph on I-95 but yes, 50 is a nice speed. I find the opposite to be true, they have a low center on gravity and really shine on twisty back roads.
@@mikesandone2652 much agreed. i daily drive my 69' 88". starting in second is just silly. With syncro in 3rd and 4th i regularly go 3rd to line up the gears then 1st. (all at a complete stop of course) Johnny must be thinking of the jeep. Land rovers with the ultralight aluminum body and heavy engine and frame these are legendary in their stability! especially with the top removed!

Loads and loads of TLC put into a great Classic. Beautiful. This is what driving should be like, pure and simple. Keep up the good work! 👍🏻

Inspirational restoration of a great vehicle. Hope my 67 109 comes out half as nice…

nice and smooth ride you have there. mine all it wants is double clutch (1963 series 2a )
That's better than when it left solihul . Top job well done...

Awesome! I am working on a 1958 Series 2 and wasn't sure what color to go with...now I know. The blue looks unbelievable. Great job!
Stunning restoration.

Fantastica, la bellezza di una costruzione quasi artigianale, la semplicità, pochi ma essenziali comandi

She's a beaut. Shame you can't have one of these in the UK these days, too many thieves around, wouldn't last a minute.
Thanks for a great intro to the IIA. I want that vehicle!!!
Nice looking beast, used to have a 68-88 loved it.
I love it, perfectly restoration
Beautiful Land...

I find third then first works well.
@@icba4907 Same - when stationary I'd always nudge against 3rd synchro before slipping into 1st or reverse.
Requesting more videos during this extended quarantine, please!
you successfully made me want to have more a landy series.. what a great restoration #IndonesianLandyLover
Sitting here green with envy!

Another great early Series 2a rebuild.
Series Landies just got it right. Especially if you have to do repairs with a hammer.

I almost never use first gear except for in terrain or sand. On the street I use the second gear for ‘take off’. Well, slow start then...
Very nice, wonder where the hood came from
Lovely Landy 😍
thats a beautiful restoration. whats the cost of that? thanks
Can this vehicle be converted to a pick up style with bed on the back instead of seats? hard top maybe, not canvas?
Wonderful looking and sounding truck. Thanks for posting this video for us "Newbie's" to the world of Rovers. If you were driving down a steep hill, how would you use the gearing to control speed? Can a Rover engine take the stress a couple mile descent?

Stunning!
I'm looking into buying a series 3 88 and I love the idea of it
pretty fast! It is usable on HWY as well?? What a great restoration!
just amazing... dream truck!

Beautiful. Door lock?... LOL...
Hello, nice Car!!! The heater is original? do you have any information about it? how to set it up, and a place to hut it?
That’s pretty .good stuff
Wish I still had my 59

Try that with drum brakes and you will eventually crash into the car in front of you. Look up “Brake Fade”.

I would be nervous having my knees so close to a steel shelf.
Prestine looking Landy, as always! Forgot to install the mesh behind the vent flaps? ;)
This one did not have the fly screens from the factory, there were no holes for them. Many early IIAs do not have them.
@@mikesandone2652 Thanks for the info Mike! I didn't knew that, thought they were fitted to all Series. All the best from The Netherlands.
