I think this new gen of attacking mids thrive when they use the width of the pitch to make runs and give themselves space to cut inside or feed the striker. Ozil and Cazorla were excellent at using the flanks and have seen David Silva and Eriksen do it too and Bruno Fernandes also likes playing on both flanks, especially the left. The high line of defence in the prem also helps. Incredible role models for them to look upto. ESR incredible to watch, hope he gets a fair chance for the WC next year.

The advantage ESR has to his game over the aforementioned is his defensive workrate and his versatility. Very similar to Saka in that sense. Some people wonder why Saka gets games ahead of Sancho. Personally I think its because he knows how to defend without the ball. I think Smith-rowe having the same trait in his locker makes him very hard to ignore for a place in this England squad. Yeah and Villa thought they were on a win/win by selling Grealish (i'm a great fan of his) for megabucks and not be too greatly disadvantaged by bringing in ESR. They managed the first bit but not the second.

What has happened to English players? We used to only have goalkeepers and centre-backs who were any good. Now it's completely reversed. Imagine Kevin Keegan having these players... every England game would end 7-6. (Yes, I'm drunk... it's Friday night).
