Buddy you might be here a long time
i'd argue that you're not supposed to like either character in the before trilogy. they're purposefully introduced as flawed in the beginning, and by the end, they're the same flawed characters, just lacking the veil of love and infatuation that idealized their reality
The Before series is my favourite trilogy in history. The idea of love being nothing but a thin veil of falsehoods is quite true, and by the end, you need to decide whether the flaws were counted in that love or hidden away. Also, it supports my view of marriage.
Interesting, that makes sense
I still like them both, I don't care if they're flawed and a little manipulative
I agree, I think both of them are right and wrong at the same time. In the end it's all about perspective and I don't think the movie showed "manipulation winning" at all tbh, but hey that's just my opinion.
I agree. She also felt kinda unfair to him and got into defensive instead of talking through things. Both are flawed, but they end up beeing ok and reflecting on their mistakes at the end.
For me its my favourite of the trilogy because I love the discusions, how they are arguing over a misunderstanding. It reminds me of real arguments, when both people are kinda right in a way
TMI but: Today was the first beautiful day I had since this year started. I played board games with friends, we had pizza and a lot of fun. Haven't done this since covid. It was so carefree and just relaxing. And now I went onto RUclips and saw this video! I always look forward to these monthly videos but I didn't know it would come out today, so this rounds up a perfect day. THANK YOU!
Hey man, I just scrolled through the comments and saw yours, thanks for sharing! It reminded me that last week was probably one of the best of the year so far for me and that I shouldnt let small things make me feel down. Have a great sunday!

I always get excited for the start of a new month because i know Karstens “what I watched in ...” is coming
Let me get this straight: You comment something that is unrelated to the fact that I have two DANGEROUSLY DASHING girlfriends? Considering that I am the unprettiest RUclipsr ever, having two hot girlfriends is really incredible. Yet you did not mention that at all. I am quite disappointed, dear aine
These videos are the reason I know it's a new month
PLS
'Mysterious Skin' is truly extraordinary
on before midnight,
i personally think that in many ways, céline is just as manipulative as jesse. and these tensions between them are visible in both before sunrise and before sunset. the little misunderstandings and conflicts that are largely brushed off. what i feel as though before midnight does better is to rationalize the idea of romantic love. getting off a train to explore vienna for a night with someone is romantic. reconnecting after years and believing there's a chance is romantic. staying through the mundane aspects of life is not. between sunrise and sunset, each character had a chance to develop fantasies about what could have been, and what is can't compare. they both have to reckon with the decisions made by their younger, more romantic selves. céline has to learn to help jesse deal with his feelings of guilt from abandoning his son and jesse has to help céline feel more supported in her career ambitions.
🤝🤝🤝🤝
2 years later response, and I couldn’t agree more. I never saw Jesse being this abusive/manipulative guy, but a deeply flawed human who’s in a relationship that isn’t as romantic and glamorous as his younger self was in. And if that isn’t human I don’t know what is. I get watching the trilogy and acknowledging these characters flaws, but I don’t think there’s a “point” to these flaws as if the ending of Before Midnight is saying, “Sometimes love is manipulative”

Ah ha! I saw ONE more film than you did this month! That means I'm automatically BETTER
@@elpollito5690 Stremio :-)
Mysterious Skin was one of the best movies I watched in film school. Absolutely insane and disturbing but simultaneously fun somehow.
Listen, I’m a 16 year old so I don’t have any better takes on marriage and life than you do. But for me, I feel like Before Midnight is a super realistic and profound installment in the trilogy, despite it being the least enjoyable. I feel like people are more like Jessie and Celine than they admit. I don’t see the movie trying to prove how they shouldn’t be together, I see it as their relationship going through a slump and a realization that they have serious work to do to fix it (whether it works out or not). Don’t get me wrong, Jessie is a huuuuge asshole and I don’t like who he is in the movie at all. But I also imagine that those fights are frighteningly common in marriages with good people, and rather than “manipulation winning” in the end, I think it’s more about them recognizing the genuine love they felt for each other in the beginning and agreeing that they’re going to give attempting to return to that love another shot. Those are just my thoughts, though.
Dude, you may be 16, but your understanding and thoughts on before midnight are more right than Karsten - a 20 plus year old man
Honestly I thought both of them were pretty flawed in the movie. Sometimes it’s kind of hard to ignore the fact that you’ve got a kid across the world that you never see and your wife just expects you to forget about it. That would turn anyone into a bit of a melodramatic wreck. But it doesn’t mean you need to document everything with your wife into a series of novels and make her a celebrity of sex appeal just because you like the idea of having another best seller. They both have heavy downs in the film but maybe I just need to watch it again
I can't believe Jason from falsettos watches Karsten 😭 I love u sm and you're so right
watched mysterious skin before i’d even listened to the whole review - couldn’t agree more this film is gonna be living rent free in my head for a while
I did not realize that July ended until I saw that you posted this hA thank you for reminding me that time is actually still passing
I loved Before midnight on a rewatch. I understand the frustration with the ending but I think it worked for me. There's a sense of ambiguity, while still giving it a sweet ending that has a dark undertone. I didn't like the movie at first but I came to the realization that it's trying to get under the skin of a relationship and when there's a sweet ending like there was to this one, it left something like, "there's gonna be more arguments, there's gonna be more deception". It kind of reminds me of the ending to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Idk. That's my take. Maybe I'm not thinking "deep" enough.
You’re speaking crazy facts and you have the big brain
yeah. i didn't really like it upon first viewing either but after i pondered it, i realized that you're kind of not supposed to?? like linklater deceived you into rooting for the idealistic version of the couple, but the last film abruptly shatters that illusion and you're met with an almost rude awakening
To me the point was "there will be more fighting, there will be more mistakes, but that does not mean they hate each other and it doesn't mean the end of their relationship." To me that's not positive or negative inherently it just...is. I'm of the opinion very few love stories exist in real life where one party hasn't majorly fucked up and to me this was their moment. Then again I don't have most optimistic view of long term relationships so thats contributing to how I feel though based on interviews I think Linklatter would agree with me.
I feel kinda depressed and anxious after these videos because there are so many films I haven’t watched that I feel like an ignorant.
I feel that, but also realize that a lot of these he’s watching for the first time meaning up until now, he was in the same boat as you with regards to these films at least

10/10 film
Every time I watch a karsten runquist I feel so comforted
Favourite films I saw for the first time this July:
Her
Brazil
King of Comedy
What’s eating Gilbert Grape
Godfather pt II
La Jaula de oro
Blindspotting
We need to talk about Kevin
watched and loveeed brazil and king of comedy
I’ve been looking for blindspotting and king of comedy but can’t find
Gracie D I watched Blindspotting on UK Netflix and King of Comedy on Amazon Prime
Bit of a deniro binge aye. Loved king of comedy. Rewatched it several months ago and always amazes me how good he acts. And gf2... no comments, aside from the fact that it’s my fav movie lol
Boris I still prefer the first godfather to part II, just think it’s slightly tighter and of course Brando adds so much to the first movie. I think Deniros best performance is probably king of Comedy
Here are some of the films I watched in July:
BlackKlansman
A Silent Voice
Coffy
Mean Streets
The End of Evangelion
American History X
I think that all of these films are brilliant
I just watched blackkklansman too, loved it!
@@aarongutierrez7705 So did I. It's a very powerful but uncomfortable movie to watch
let's gooo, the end of eva= masterpiece
end of evangelion is the best one there
@@brry_01 I watched the full entire series first (In Japanese, don't worry) using a mix between Netflix subtitles and the original translation for key moments such as Kaji's final voicemail to Misato, and the full Kawuro epsiode. I didn't quite follow the plot most of the time and I didn't really understand what was going on, but I quite enjoyed it.
With that being said, I didn't understand the full plot of The End of Evangelion as I have a short attention span, but I was still shocked to my core with moments like Asuka's robot being devoured by the Ewa's and the third impact. The scene at the start where Shinji lusts for Asuka's unconscious body also had me shocked
How do you find so much time to watch movies and make videos? Teach me your secret.
You have much more time in a day than you think if you don't waste it. Personally, I don't spend any time anymore on social media (not counting RUclips) and I don't stay in bed for more than 8 hours.
these videos always give me the push to watch more films that ive been holding off on, i love your channel
In Before Midnight I think an argument could be made for both sides. I think he most likely is not giving her the love she needs and she’s giving him unreal expectations with how he will spend time with his kids on different sides of the world. It’s been a little since I’ve watch that one but I’ve seen it probably 3 times.
I think the Before Trilogy has a similar discourse to Marriage Story in some ways in that there's people who hate Jesse and there's people who hate Celine, especially in the last one. They are both flawed and different people will latch on to those flaws in different ways.
and now I really want to rewatch them...
Before Midnight is my favourite of the thrilogy, felt much more profound and nuanced, much more planned out and mature, loved it
its so weird i was just thinking about when you're gonna upload, and here u are karsting
I genuinely love these videos and love watching your channel. You've brought me to watching movies in a different way. In short I really love your channel and all the joy it's brought me
i'm so happy you mentioned journey to the west, one of my favourite nostalgic films

There’s something about July and watching movies......no matter is quality of film, the weather outside, or the constant mostly worsening state of the world around us, movies and the middle of summer just go together so well.
Your comment made me remember to be grateful.
You. Are. Hands. Down. One. Of. The. Best. RUclipsrs. Honestly thou, as a film graduate seeing / hearing someone talk about film in a way that is both in-depth and goofy is both reassuring and very entertaining! Keep this up my guy! 🥰🥰🥰
I rarely find myself agreeing with your takes but your rating and thoughts on Mysterious Skin are totally right on. One of my all time favorite films with such a killer soundtrack.
i literally finished Old Joy mere minutes before this dropped
"to be violent with your film making but innocent at the same time" is such a good description of Mysterious Skin
SO agreed with everything about Mysterious Skin!! I think what makes it so impactful is definitely that fine balance between the brutality of the subject matter and the tenderness with which the characters are handled. It doesn't pain Neal or Brian as perfect angels by any stretch, nor does it make the story completely about the trauma that happened to them - it just allows them to be real, and deeply impacted by the trauma in ways they don't even realize, and that's what makes you care about them so much long after the move ends.
I also think it's the lack of closure that keeps it living so rent free in my head. Like.. I don't necessarily think it needs a full sequel, but I don't think I've ever yearned for SOME kind of continuation of as story as much as I do with Mysterious Skin. Because it ends before we really get to see any healing, and that's so deeply painful. I suppose for Brian he somewhat starts that process, but Neal... boy needs SO SO much help working through all that trauma, and I need to know he gets it, and the story doesn't give us that
the before sunset triology is so personal and sweet i’m so glad you covered it
karsten i love you
Scenes From A Marriage miniseries is phenomenal! It’d be hard to watch all of the episodes back to back (I broke it up into 2 nights), but it’s super well paced for how much dialogue it is.
im highkey so glad u watched mysterious skin and even gladder than u liked it, it's one of my fave movies bc it follows you around for days afterwards.
Idk if it’s just me but you seem very happy in this video and it’s great to hear that
i am endlessly grateful to you for introducing me to mysterious skin because i FINALLY watched it and it's a fucking masterpiece and a new all-time favorite for me so thank you
My list of films I need to watch is getting dangerously close in length to my list of favorite films; Karsten's monthly films are definitely aiding that growth lol!
Really glad to see someone else delving into Arakis work. He's such an interesting director and "The Doom Generation" is easily one of my favorite movies and I even bought the unrated director's cut just so I could see the cut scenes. His movies are just seeped in aesthetics and Gen X synesism without the hindsight we have today on the 90s. I also love his weird distortion of reality that makes me think of Baz Luhrmann but if he was having a really bad trip.
i love watching these monthly videos. i work in a video shop and have been in and out of film school since i was 19 (omw to get that degree eventually?). these videos tend to pretty consistently follow what i've been watching as a dedicated movie buff, and add depth to films that are already in my watchlist, which fuckng rules. i don't like to interact and comment too much, but i've had a few beers too many and felt up to leaving my thoughts like some drunk dumbass. so ya. that's all.

MAn you hit a lot of great classic comedy movies. best in show, o brother where art thou, the birdcage, all great great movies. glad you enjoyed!
Karsten, I'm also pretty young, but I think Before Midnight makes it pretty clear that Celine is too intelligent and independent to let herself be manipulated. Particularly in the final scene, what Jesse is doing is not manipulation, but a hail mary and a last attempt at negotiation. Celine doesn't give in because anybody is making her, she gives in because at the end of the day she agrees that what they have is as close as possible to true love. Like you said, the film would not be doing its duty if it didn't portray lifelong marriage as an incredibly flawed arrangement. Both of the characters have their doubts and their insecurities, as every human will, but that isn't enough of a reason to give up on their best chance at happiness. Celine realizes in the end that it is better to have faith in what she loves, than to punish herself and her husband because of problems neither of them can properly solve.
the way I love you... is something else. you’re the creator of my watchlist on Letterboxd, thank you,
7:50 Tommy is such a weird and artsy movie and I love it. My favorite scene is definitely the Go To the Mirror scene with Jack Nicholson
i’m honestly not that sure why i watch these videos. i never know what films he’s talking about nor do i really have a drive to watch them. i’ve been watching karsten for years knowing damn well i’ll never be half as interested in films as he is but i still watch almost all his videos. i just really appreciate that he finds such joy in talking about films.
Totally agree on Before Midnight, I don't think any ending would actually be good because of what was built up to that point, but yep it could have been better or at least not passing gaslighting as acceptable and normal (one thing is pointing that it exists/existed in the relationship, another is claiming their togetherness depends on it as if it was nice instead of sad).

ashidenki Edgar Wright is my favorite director
its absurd how half of these are on my letterboxd watchlist and synecdoche new york out of all films I've seen too in July.
Yooooo I haven't heard anyone talk about Mysterious Skin! I watched it when 500 Days of Summer came out I was like 15 and wanted to watch all of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's movies. Really stays with you. I'd love to see you do a full video on it!
Keep up the good work
In my opinion First Cow is a masterpiece. An understated masterpiece though for sure. It just feels like it's own perfectly self-contained time capsule of empathy and kindness.
Inspired by these videos so I made my own list this July with rating wow
I probably won't watch most of these, but this was a fun watch
Thanks for these videos, since i started watching your channel, I make my own list of what I watched in the month! I definitely have discover a lot of films thanks to you, so I would like to reccomend you a film, it is called "Las elegidas" it's a mexican movie about a girl that ends in the world of prostitution, it has an interesetnig way to tell such a heartbreaking history that resembles the reality in the country, hope you have the time to watch it! :)
YOU R THE BEST
I also watched before sunset this month after holding it off way too long.. And man, did I love it even more than the first one! I actually think I dreamed about it and all of the lost love in my life all night after watching it! Still have to see before midnight so I skipped that part of the video ;)
I decided to look up my name (karsten) and found your channel and I love it
I remembered quite a few things from this video and forgot they were all from this video.
I love Raising Arizona ! And Oh Brother Where Art Thou!
I also watched mysterious skin in july and just seeing the clips in the video made me feel uneasy, it's a beautiful movie but it reallly traumatized me in a way
O Brother whereart thou gives me PTSD because I had to watch the gopher scene like 30 times for my screenplay class and I can recite it from perfect memory yet I have never watched the full film
The Rome Episode in Night On Earth is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I still laugh my ass off to this day when I watch it.
Commenting every day until Karsten ranks the Barbie movies:
Day 2
poster never stop stopping is BY FAR the best movie made in film history.
i audibly gasped when u talked about not really enjoying Spaceballs out of sheer nostalgia it gives me. its def not the best mel brooks film but i love it.
Glad more people are seeing Gregg Araki’s works!
You should do a video on like your favourite films of all time
Huh. I really didn't know the Coen Brothers directed 'O Brother Where Art Thou'. Or if i did I totally forgot that they did lol. That's one of my favorite comedies ever really.
Also, Mysterious Skin is a phenomenal movie. I stumbled upon and started it with exactly zero knowledge/expectations as to what the movie was. It's very very uncomfortable to watch and at times SUUUUPER difficult to get through, but i loved it. Not one I'll be going back to over and over to watch because of how difficult it is in some parts, but I would absolve recommend it to any movie/story lover. Definitely wouldnt recommend it to a casual fan of film at all though hahah.
Thanks for the video. Im a new subscriber, so I'm very excited to start going through your catalog.
