    Even though I love to fix things just for the challenge, you convinced me that I never want to take my K800 apart. I spilled coffee on mine and it sill works after draining the coffee out and blowing out the board with a high powered hand held blower. I will unscrew things but when you have to pry them apart you run the risk of busted clips and never going together again. What you did was just too much work but a good learning experience.

    Good job, but I'm here because I thought you might change the stoopid battery while you were in there. Making that unreplaceable seems like a first-class dickish thing to do to customers.

    What an absolute disgrace this keyboard is from a reparability standpoint. :(
    Thanks for the video.

    My K800 finally began having key troubles. Tab, S, D and Ctrl no contact. Viewed you video to see how case halves came apart. Would never have thought Logitech would use double-sided tape to stick the back cover in place. Once apart I doused membrane and wire trace layer with rubbing alcohol, set them in front of fan for 2 hours then repeated. Reassembled and I'm typing on it right now. Thanks!

  • @rin55
    @rin55 3 года назад +9

    Very thankful for the video! I fixed mine. Typing on it right now. My spill was water and was probably less than a teaspoon, but was enough to make the keyboard go crazy. I did not bake it, I separated the 3 layers of the contact sheet and gently cleaned the contacts with cotton buds and rubbing alcohol. Then let the alcohol evaporate for about 30 mins just in case, laid the layers back on, gently pressed everywhere to stick it back. I found it easier to just carefully peel halfway from the side (my number pad was fine, so I did not peel all the way), than trying to get in with a knife from the middle :D. The contact sheet thing has 3 layers, the middle one is just plastic separating the 2 layers you need to clean. It is definitely tedious work, to get to it, it's an expensive keyboard..so it helps if you have a replacement keyboard to use in the meantime while you do this carefully, on your own time. If you are desperate, windows have an onscreen keyboard you can click around with the mouse. I also recommend googling 'key test' and using that to determine which keys have gave gone coo-coo Also take photos and separate your screws. And if you are prone to spilling your drink, my genuine advice is: don't purchase or repurchase this keyboard, it's sensitive and difficult to take apart and put back together. Also! take care and don't break the on/off button when putting the cover back on, make sure the tiny stick that the tiny switch inside and the plastic button are in the off position. I even held the plastic button with my hand so it would not slide while I was putting the front cover on, because I broke it on my previous keyboard.

      How did you separate the membranes?

    • @rin55
      @rin55 Год назад

      @@pogtuber5146 I think I used a knife to separate the layers at the edge, and then peel. But seriously, though, fuck this keyboard. It is too sensitive and absurdly hard to fix. Since I made that comment, I spilled stuff on it again and broke some keys taking it apart. So I cut my losses and bought a Logitech g213, a sturdier and somewhat spill-resistant one. It's wired and the feel is not the same, but I can trust it not to break from a teaspoon of liquid and 3 crumbs.
      if you manage to fix the k800, never have any food or any liquid anywhere near it ever again. It's just not that keyboard. It can only survive this way. For how expensive it is, it should be way less sensitive.
      If you fail at fixing it, do yourself a favor and look for a spill-resistant one.

    • @pogtuber5146
      @pogtuber5146 Год назад

      @@rin55 Yeah I don't think I"m going to try to split the membranes, I've left it with a fan blowing for 2 days and it didn't "fix" it, I might try a hair dryer and leave it for a week for one final attempt. However I found someone local selling a really good condition K800 for $30 so I'm going to pick it up. I just don't feel like researching new keyboards just to end up being disappointed. And for sure, from now on I'm NOT eating or drinking around my keyboards.

    • @rin55
      @rin55 Год назад

      @pogtuber5146 it's very easy to split, you can't damage it as long as you don't try to disconnect the whole thing from the keyboard. The 1st and the 3rd layer have holes in it, you could use a hole at the edge to get tweezers or an edge of a knife between the layers. The middle layer does not have holes, if I remember correctly.
      This is a different keyboard, but the circuit contact sheet is very similar and you can see how easy it is should be to sepparate.
      ruclips.net/user/clipUgkxSY3FU_oMEojci8ljv4CPTcA0_Nxt3Zfh?si=aoR7TdgA3yjIw1Bk
      The contacts are drawn on the inside of the layers, so in order to clean you have to sepparate. Just run a qtip dipped in rubbing alcohol along every line on the inside of 1st andb3rd layer and let it dry.
      It also depends on what you spilled. Water should be fine, but drinks with any acidity/ sugar have tendency to corode.
      The reall chalange is putting buttons back on without breaking them.
      Well, if you decide to get that $30 keyboard, don't throw away this one, because it can be a donnor for broken buttons 😄

      @@rin55 yeah I think this would be a nightmare, i can't readily tell where the connections are being made, or even what's an air bubble and what's liquid. I'll be holding on to the keys because yeah I already broke the Windows key switch just taking it apart lol

    I spilled beer on mine last night bc a bug was partially in my mouth! So spit the beer all over left side of keyboard. I wiped it all down and shook it out (I wish I used the compressed air I have in my garage but it was late) so I took batteries out ran it under warm water this morning from Reading many threads and blew out all the excess water with air hose and now keys won’t even work lol maybe it needs to dry out. Sucks I loved this KB and now they are still for sale but $350!!! Off to BB to see what’s the latest and created for illuminating KB’s
    ** Update. the KB dried out all beer gone followed this video (but didn't pop keys off or the plastic hinges) and it works perfect. never would know it happened. So pumped!

    Replacement battery for LI-ION version of K800 is "802085" - 1500MAH, battery needs to have 3 wires as it probably includes a thermistor.
    Same battery is in mx keys. Logitech craft has same sized battery but more wires and does not fit directly.
    Older K800 uses and charges standard NICD or NIMH AA size batteries. I own one of each revisions, they are both good products, but pain in the ass to open.

    Interesting. The way the keys are connected to the board has been changed, and looks much easier to replace. Earlier versions of the K800 are a nightmare to replace but on the plus side you can also easily replace the batteries when they die. I wish I'd known they had covered the battery compartment in newer versions of the board before I bought a new one. :(

    Is it worth spending hours and hours trying to repair this keyboard instead of spending $60 on a new one? Not in 2020. But maybe now in 2022, when Logitech discontinued this keyboard with no new replacement. The K800 was the best keyboard ever. The M570 was the best mouse ever. Both discontinued. Thanks, Logitech. Or should I say illogical-tech.

    well - I have the first revision with the replaceable batteries - also flooded it with liquor - captain morgan to be specific
    I disassembled mine as fast as possible (after turning it of and taken out the batteries) and then had it cleaned about 5 min in flowing water - had it dry for about 2 1/2 days - just put it together - seems to be working again - although a few keys seem to be reworked ...
    luckly for me it worked without dismanteling all the keys - I just took out the key assembly as a whole and had it flooded with warm clean water - it's the least serviceable keyboard I ever encountered - I complained about it at logitechs subreddit - but they didn't even bothered to reply at all

    Hey! I've got a really, really weird issue with my K800 keyboard that started just a couple of days ago. When I turn on the keyboard, it starts typing the / key repeatedly. It doesn't stop unless I type something else on my own. So if I start typing something, it stops.
    Also, it does the same thing if I'm pressing Windows Key + Space, or Windows Key + Z. It just starts typing ///////////. I just want to mention that all the keys work perfectly fine when they're pressed separately. It's just this particular key combination that's causing it to start typing ///// for no reason.
    Is there anything that can be done, or so I need a new keyboard?

      @@dslunsford1 The answer is no. If you want to clean up the membrane you need to remove the keys. However, in my case it was not necessary, I don't know what was the exact cause of the problem with my keyboard (certain keys typed multiple letters when pressed), but it was not because of a spill of liquid. I simply removed the back cover, dusted some dirt off, and assembled it back together. It did something because the keyboard worked as expected afterwards. I tried to remove some keys to clean the dirt stuck to the membrane under the keys, but desisted soon after I broke the plastic spring system under one key, so be careful with that if you decide to take apart the keys.

      The second unit however, which I bought a couple of years after the first one (because of good experience with the first) had dead buttons within I believe the first 6 months or so. Logitech definitely started to produce less quality products at some point...

      I've always encouraged friends and family to buy Logitech because with MS I had serious range & reliability issues, they don't allow you to pair with other dongles and they didn't encrypt all of their wireless keyboards even as recently as a few years ago. And Logitech battery life was just excellent (although not so much with this backlit model - they should have added more AA's for capacity). But I've also become more disillusioned with Logitech quality over the last decade. Plastics feel cheap, keys used by technical users are missing (Break), gimicky icons all over their function keys - when I glance down to find a special function key I need to be able to identify it QUICKLY - not go back and forth deciphering fucking hieroglyphs. The new MX Keys, though well reviewed, has several of these problems which puts me right off.
