    I am a vocal coach and I can't begin to tell you how refreshing it is to hear someone teach forward placement and resonance in the correct and simple way. This is so much of what my students and I do. I will be showing them this video (: thank you Again. You are truly inspiring and remind very much Joyce Didonato, who is my hero.

    This is also a great exercise for people who are just trying to improve their speaking voice. I have very limited range, resonance and volume due to a surgery for spasmodic dysphonia and still struggle with muscle tension dysphonia and bad vocal habits. I tried this, and it has been a tremendous help. I'll be checking out your other videos, for sure. Thanks for the early Christmas gift, Tricia!

    It’s like a butterfly effect, like a very small tiny change you have to do in order to get big results. If you try to do a lot it will only end up not working because the more effort you put in the smaller the results will be. So don’t put so much effort it only requires tiny tiny effort. My teacher always used to say it too “its like you are threading a needle” and I would never understand what she was talking about. But now I do understand it. It’s that singing is actually never requring effort it doesn’t matter how unexperienced you are it never requires effort. It’s not like you will have to put effort until you no longer have to put the effort in. You never have to put too much effort and thats how you find that tongue placement. Great exercise!!!

    Thanks for the mask awareness, I found it helpful (especially a mask in these pandemic time). I have a folk song with "been", :"can", "glen", "then" "hen" etc. as the end of each line and found it very difficult to sing on pitch, because it is not the usual ah, ay, ee, eye , oh, ewe. Your tutorial gives an approach, I'm grateful.

    The whole "NG, tiny, foward, mask, resonance, placement" is easy to get in higher notes, but not in my lower chest voice. Is "NG" less applicable in lower notes? Also, I find "NG" easy to do, but that placement is not as easy to do while singing certain vowels or words. Again, the lower notes are harder to find the forward placement and thinner more focused sounds.

    • @kingofhearts652

      I have the same issues

    • @jazznotes3802
      @jazznotes3802 3 года назад

      Correct! Mask is easier as you sing in your mid range. Lower chest voice and high head voice pulls away from the mask.

    • @MichaelRainboy
      @MichaelRainboy 3 года назад

      In the lower chest register you might confuse the right position with the position on which you talk "which is most of the time not the correct singing position with most people". That creates the hard lower notes.

    Thanks, Regalo1.9.7.9, for you question. It is difficult to say, as every voice is so different... To really get to the answer to your question, perhaps an Ear Nose and Throat doctor could guide you. I will offer some ideas in hopes of helping... the "ng" may be a challenge for some singers as tongue is involved and if there is tongue, jaw, or larynx tension, a tiny, narrow, pure "ng" may be harder to find. Perhaps a tiny "mmmm" may be better to find that mask resonance. Also, it is not uncommon to hear a "flapping" or "fluttering" around the ears when some singers produce high notes. This may be what you are experiencing.See if you can find the mask resonance in the lower range and gently work you way up. I find that finding the mask resonance takes less work that students think. With a relaxed jaw, larynx and tongue.... that "ng" or "mmmm" is similar to a puppy dog whine or a irritating mosquito buzz... sometimes bending over at the waist and producing the sound "upside down" helps to get the sensation in the mask. Thanks again for connecting. Hope this helps...

    There is historical precedent, perhaps most notably in the methodology of Percy Rector Stevens (teacher of baritone Reinald Werrenrath and Paul Althouse, among others), who stressed the "n" as opposed to the "m" for vocalises to ensure the proper placement of the tone in the mask.
