  • Let's be honest, Vizio's TV brand has lost some luster over the past few years. But the company has just addressed my single biggest complaint, and I think it could be the start of a big comeback. But can Vizio take on TCL and Hisense, which are on a huge tear? I have some thoughts to share on that topic.

My two older Vizio TVs simultaneously went wonky and I had to reset both to factory settings, which is a pain and time consuming. It was obviously Visio that caused this with no warning. Smartcast simply stopped working and wouldn't load.

I recently got the 2023 (2022 release) Vizio MQ8. The 50" version is the one with the 244Hz if you plug a PC in, and it was on sale at the end of last year or the beginning of this year for around $398 so I figured it might work for gaming. So far I haven't been let down. Not a huge fan of their Smartcast Interface, but it does the job.

The shame for Vizio is they were poised to join the high end with the Quantum X P Series. Nearly 3000 nits with a ton of zones. Challenge was erratic local dimming, not very colorful for having Quantum dots and reliability. Great vid Caleb

It's had several updates that fixed whatever bugs the tv started out with. Fortunately for me I didn't have any bugs with my tv. My tv was purchased in February of 2021 so maybe the bugs were fixed by then.

There are limits to what even the best TVs can do. Your television would be astronomical in cost if they were to include picture processing that could resolve the issue you’re speaking of. You’re right. It’s inherent to all home TVs and even present in commercial panels.

The TCL should destroy it being a mini dot with over 1,000 nits of brightness and Way more dimming areas...If its close you need to return your TCL back to the store and get another one or have it professionally calibrated... The QM8 should have OLED type quality like the Hisense U8K does...

As a 2021 Vizio PQX owner, they’re going to have to do a lot more than spit shine their smart TV to win me back. The TV has great hardware, it’s PQ is amazing when fed a 4K signal. They’re processing, on the other hand, is garbage, and that includes motion. They also need to step up majorly in the quality control department, as I am on my 3rd warranty TV. Also, any problems fixed through their updates created other ones. Since I managed to not throw the thing out on the street from frustration, I am happy enough with what I have for now, but it was a horrible road to get there. If I had to replace it today, it would be the TCL QM8.

The Vizio P65-C1 set the standard for what a modern TV is back in 2016. Since then, everything has been incremental. Also, their QC is a well known issue. Smartcast isn't terrible but when Roku and Google TV exist, Smartcast can't compete. Then you add in TCL and Hisense, who have their own vertically integrated supply chains, and Vizio can't compete in costs either. I used to be their biggest fan, and like you, my first flat panel LCD was a 37" Vizio back in 2007. But, ever since the failed LeEco take over, they've been in a bad spot. They haven't announced any new units when everyone else has. No follow up to their OLED, nothing... Their motion handling is at the bottom when compared to their peers. Same for upsclaing, their's is not good at all IMO. Rtings, FOMO, and Digital Trends themselves have pointed this out numerous times over the years. Cheap HW and poor SW is not a recipe for success.

    • @chuckfriebe843

TCL TVs don’t allow access to their professional calibration menus unless you have the service codes. Whereas, Vizio does. Vizios are much easier to calibrate the white balance and Hisense is a joke when it comes to real color representation.

I owned a vizio tv and a Dolby atmos soundbar, picture on tv was very good and soundbar sounded great ……. When they worked. Unfortunately that wasn’t most of the time. The soundbar had issues as soon as I set it up, they replaced it and the replacement had the same problems. That’s a quality control issue. One time they did a firmware update that completely screwed things up. Then I read that they make more money selling user information and ads on their app screen than from selling tvs and audio. I hope they fix their problems. ✌️🙏🏼

I bought a new 65inch vizio p-series quantum 2019 model and I haven't had a single issue with it yet. In August of 2021 I bought a 75 inch vizio p series quantum 2021 year model and no issues other than some very slight delay es with the smart cast home screen which I don't even use. Both tvs looks amazing and the brightness and HDR are amazing. My 75 inch is hooked up to my PS5 with it's hdmi 2.1 ports and it's amazing. Again no issues but unless I see their build quality go up and they do better testing on the software side of their tvs before new model releases, I will probably go to a higher end brand whenever the 75 inch dies which isn't probably going to happen in the next few years anyways and by then I will being going OLED since prices by then will be more reasonable hopefully. I'm not spending over $1800 for a 75inch oled tv

Getting rid of smartcast is a small step in the right direction, it's pretty much mandatory to bypass it with an external streamer.
The issue I've had and have heard from so many others who bought Vizio tvs the last 6-7 years has been major reliability/quality control concerns. I have a 2018 Vizio P Quantum (their top model that year), and it's been replaced twice (thankfully under warranty) over a 2.5 year span from when it was bought new. The 'quirks' which still exist on set i have no like random power cycling, HDMI ARC never working with soundbar (And HDMI Arc works with other tvs and this particular soundbar) and reboots I have to do myself time to time just persist. Not to mention random video scramble screens I get as well time to time which sometimes results in tv rebooting itself or the horrible blooming i've had with all 3 sets despite having 192 zones of FALD (Which was a lot back in 2018).
They have got to get their quality/reliability under control bottom line. I had a n old non-smart 1080p Vizio I had gotten over a decade ago now and it's still working as it was brand new today for a different family member, this 2018 Vizio P Series I have is basically junk and I can see people throwing these out a lot quicker than normal with tvs as a result.

Caleb, can you please do a deep dive for us on TV processors alone? These devices really aren't TVs anymore and everyone knows it. They are computers. They are LINUX boxes. The single most important component of ANY computer is its processor. Can you please shift gears here for us and really focus in on the SoC platforms that these TVs are running on? LG and Samsung build their own SoC's. Sony gets theirs made for them by MediaTek who uses the TSMC fabs for their production. I think consumers could really benefit from reviewers doing a FAR more in-depth analysis and review of the processors running inside these TVs today - and the algorithms that run inside of those processors. Consumers aren't just ready for this type of deeper dive on TV processors, they really need it at this point.

The problem for Visio is that's probably the only one from 2010 that still is. Vizios aren't know for being very reliable/dependable or for lasting all that long. That's a big part of the reason why so many consumers have backed away from them over the past few years. Much like TCL and Hisense, they simply don't last over the long term. Too many issues, too many failures, too many problems. What good is saving money on the purchase price of a TV if it doesn't last?

One may wonder why Vizio is focusing on new UX for their built in smart app. It's likely due to their business model relying far too much on selling user data (which they've been in trouble with already).
This alone won't save them when TCL and Hisense can beat them on price and quality every day. Nobody has brand allegiance for $300 TVs.

Sadly, all three of these bands fall flat on their face for long-term reliability. None of them have great reputations for longevity. Any time you hear of a TCL, Vizio or Hisense that lasts for than three or four years you are absolutley socked and amazed - because SO few of them ever do!

The 2018 PQ was amazing. It had brightness well over 2000 nits, contrast matching the Sony Z9 and Samsung QFN9, BT2020 coverage of 81%, and was affordable at 65 inches. I feel like they were so ahead of the field at the time, and could have built on that.

If we enter a channel number and it goes to that station, we can’t change the station from there unless it goes back to the station we were originally on. When you hit the mute button then try to change the channel, the mute goes off!

Vizio use too be my favorite TV brand. My first 1080p TV was a Vizio from Costco, my mother now owns that TV and still to this day it runs like a dream. What turned heads and raised eyebrows for Vizio was the fact it's TV's offered just about all features such as, a native 120hz panel, high nit brightness, lots of backlight zones, VRR, HDR, HDR10+ HLG and Dolby Vizion at competitive undercutting prices. Whereas some Brands like Sammy don't support Dolby Vision, LG don't support HDR10+. I know Vizio UI was just and anchor dragging them down, but the other major problem why they been stuck in the rutt is reliability issues. Their products always had some nagging issues that just absolutely frustrates the the all hell out of you that made you want too throw the remote through the panel. Issues such as TV not turning on, or not turning off. TV not responding to remote inputs, or maybe it was the remote with an issue. Also HDMI handshake issues where the TV doesn't recognize what you have plugged into it so it doesn't connect. And then you get that dreadful no input message it's definitely a far cry from the old reliable TVs back in the day from Vizio. I would love to see the big V get back in the game but with all these budget brands putting out amazing products that's absolutely comparable to some of the top tier brands, not only is it a long road for Vizio but I feel like the reputation damage is stuck in the consumers brain and therefore most won't even consider a Vizio they will walk pass to another budget brand.

Unfortunately for Vizio they burned me with my last TV. I bought a P55-F1 when it came out and it was an awesome price to value purchase. They did an update which caused the backlight for local dimming to become sparratic so I had to keep it off which sucked for HDR content. When playing games it was so bad I disabled it permanently. I expected the TV to last as long as my previous Vizio, sadly they never fixed the problem and I purchased another TV after becoming fed up. I bought a 65" LG C2 and will never recommend Vizio TVs again or puchase one. To me it doesn't matter if they make the best TV in the market, they lost a customer for life. The 5.1.4 Vizio atmos soundbar I bought with it still delivers and I continue to enjoy it, but as a brand I will not support anymore.

  • @JeremiahSpoon

Bought my first Vizio TV three years ago. It was my first TV from them. It will also be my last. That TV had to get repaired by Vizio twice - then warranty replaced with a newer model. Even then, half the features on the box didn't work correctly until 18 months later after multiple firmware updates. Even today, it's not perfect. The TV has a 50/50 shot of not handshaking with HDMI devices.
Suffice it to say, while I would say that their customer service was good, the quality of what I purchased wasn't. I don't trust that any TV I purchase in the future will be any better with actually supporting the features they state it does on the box. I've now successfully steered more than a few people away from the brand towards more reliable manufacturers.

It does look significantly better, but it won't change the fact that Vizio just doesn't have much of a place in the market anymore. When people think bang for your buck, they think TCL, and Hisense to some degree. If people want something better, they push for the big 3 of Samsung, LG, and Sony. Vizio is the odd one out, and they have some major issues with QC on their TVs that have yet to be rectified.

I recently traded my LG 55-inch plus $100 for a 70-inch vizio. I was very excited to get home and said everything up. That said, after doing so I am having an issue! I was relying on the Wi-Fi direct feature in both my LG and Samsung TVs to be also in the Vizio!? Vizio needs to take a big look at the market and reinvent themselves from a couple aspects
1, adopt a universal OS. I’d say FireTV. With the growth of Ring and the Alexa ecosystem and even home builders like Lennar giving people a starter Ring security system, them being in that ecosystem will sell itself especially if they offer higher end product options, which almost never offer FireTV
2, they need to reevaluate their tv line up so it’s more comparable to the rest of the market and can actually compete.
    V Series: 43”-75” 60Hz Direct Lit QD-LCD
    M Series 50”-85” 120Hz FALD QD-LCD
    P Series 50”-85” 120Hz FALD QD-LCD with a higher zone count
P Series Quantum 65”-98” MiniLED QD-LCD with a very premium design
H Series: at least make it compete with the LG B series so it can be $1300 at holiday season and offer it in 55”-77”
3, get their damn quality control together.
