Mindfulness, PTSD, and Childhood Trauma: The Girl and the Umbrella

- Counselor Carl (serenityonlinet...) uses a simple story about a girl and her umbrella to show how to reprogram and heal one's brain from childhood trauma through the practice of mindfulness. He explains that avoidance prevents the brain from being "upgraded" from the past programming of a traumatic childhood to the safety of the here-and-now as a powerful adult . And he stresses the importance of learning how to "feel the fear and do it anyway." Counselor Carl's straight-forward teaching style makes complex concepts easy to understand. Counselor Carl is a licensed, professional counselor with 19 years of clinical experience both online and face-to-face.
You ever heard of PTSD? You make it sounds so simple. The problem is when you suffer from flashbacks, there’s NOTHING you can do about it! With or without the umbrella it doesn’t matter! Sometimes exciting the flashbacks and understanding it’s not your fault is what starts the healing!
I think he was trying to help people recognise and understand it...it's certainly helped me understand. Stress, trauma and PTSD are often complex, his way of exclaiming was very useful, to me anyway. I hope you're ok
you probably dont care at all but does someone know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account??

You're very welcome! I wish you the best on your recovery!
I’m so happy for you.

I'm trying to listen to you but it's distracting when you look like George Bush! It makes me laugh!
Ok, I'm sorry about that. Try closing your eyes! LOL
LOL!
😂😂😂
Strange. I was having a massive anxiety attack and decided to take a shower. Out of nowhere, I put PTSD meditation in the search box while I was in the shower in the dark, singing, trying to block flashbacks. And then you popped up talking about a woman in the rain. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you so much "Feel the fear but do it anyway"
You're welcome, Jamila!

This story happened to my best friend's family. I am trying to share it with everyone I can because they understand where true comfort, peace & hope is found. God bless you!
Family Story
Little did our family of six know that Friday evening, September 24th, 2021, would be the last night our family would be complete. We laughed together, played games, sang, and enjoyed listening as our 16-year-old son, Ethan, played the piano for us. I packed a lunch for Ethan for a church mountain hike he was going on the following day.
My mother (who was visiting from out of state) and I woke early with Ethan on Saturday morning. He hugged me and smiled, never pulling away or rushing me. He got in the car, waved, said he'd see me later and he loved me. It was hard to watch my "new driver" heading out on his own that morning. As Ethan pulled out of the gate, I turned to my mother and said, "It's just so hard letting go." Little did I know how much "letting go" I was really doing. That was the last time I saw Ethan. He did not make it home that evening.
That afternoon, a friend tried to contact my husband, leaving an urgent message to call him back. He tried several times to return the call to no avail. As we were preparing supper, an overwhelming feeling of deep concern for Ethan filled my heart. I quietly blinked back tears. I glanced out the window, half expecting to see a police officer pull up to the house, but no one arrived. However, within a few minutes, a patrol car DID pull into the driveway. In my heart, I feared the worst. My husband and I went out to meet the officer, who confirmed our fears. Hesitantly, he told us our son had fallen off of
a bluff and had succumbed to his injuries. Our hearts were crushed; they still are.
Yet, in all of our brokenness, deep, continual grief and loneliness, our family has such a blessed Hope and assurance that we will see our dear son and brother again. You see, when Ethan was a young boy, he was saved; he put his faith in Jesus alone to forgive his sins and to take him to Heaven when he died. He realized some very important truths from the Bible that he would want to share with you.
His Story
Everyone is a sinner. Sin is any violation of God’s Law. God is holy, just and righteous, and He cannot allow sin in His presence. Ethan realized that he - like all of us - had sinned; and his sin separated Him from God.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; ” (Romans 3:23)
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” (Romans 5:12)
He understood that, because of his sin, he deserved to spend eternity in Hell.
“For the wages of sin is death;” (Romans 6:23a) [Wages: price]
“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)
Ethan believed that Jesus, God’s Son, paid the price for all sin when He died on the cross - because His sinless sacrifice was the only thing that could satisfy the just demands of a righteous, holy God. Jesus was buried in a borrowed tomb, but He arose the third day, triumphant over sin, death, and Hell. Jesus is alive today!
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Ethan was sorry for his sin, repented (turned), and received by faith the free gift that God offered to him.
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
“...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23b)
Because of this great salvation, Ethan lived his life serving Jesus. He worked hard to spread this Good News to the world. He is alive in Heaven with Jesus today; and because of this great HOPE in Christ, we know we will see him again soon - not because he was a great kid, but because of his faith in the great Saviour!
“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” (John 10:28)
Your Story
What about you? What if you had fallen to your death that day - What if you were to die today? Where will you spend eternity - Heaven or the Lake of Fire? There will not be any parties in the Lake of Fire. It is a place of eternal torment for those who reject God's Son.
The Word of God is very clear that there is only One Way to Heaven.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)
We did not know that Ethan would step into eternity that day; however, because he put his faith in Jesus alone for his salvation, Ethan was ready to go. Some day - perhaps today - you will take your last breath here on earth, and you will step into eternity. Where you spend eternity is determined by what you do with Jesus Christ. Will you accept Him or reject Him? You are not promised another day or another breath. Eternity begins soon - Are you ready?
“...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” (Acts 16:31b)
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
“(...behold, now is the day of salvation.)” (2 Corinthians 6:2c)

My mother has no idea how damaging physical abuse is.. Indian parents know nothing. I'm tired of living in survival mode.
I’m sorry . Take care of you .
Start your recovery journey by yourself. Take care of your well-being and watch your self thoughts and conversations.
black parents as well 😭😭😭 yet they’ll blame Gen Z for everything smdh i hope you’re feeling better
I have cPTSD. It is debilitating. I have tried lots of therapy. But when I get close to scratching the surface. I freak out. And stop going. I dissociate. Any suggestions?
It is difficult to suggest what to try when I don't know what you have already tried. But here is one suggestion: when you feel up to this kind of work of "scratching the surface," go there and then when you begin to "freak out," back off by focusing on your breathing until you completely calm down. And then keep repeating this each step of the way (over time and during many sessions) as you go deeper beneath the surface. It is important that you pick good times to practice this, when you are well-rested and have the energy to do it, and it is also important that you pace yourself, meaning knowing when to move forward and knowing when to step back. You can do this by writing about it or visualizing it or in therapy talking about it.
Mary Rose Tallulah thank u so much. I have good meds. God helps me. And I cannot go back. I am all limbic system. So I work on coping skills for today. I’m pretty debilitated. But it’s ok. The days I can go out. I really appreciate 🤗 the days I have to stay in. Are for the good of all. I really like people. But have difficulty interacting with them. But it has brought me closer to God. Made me kinder. And. I know myself. Thank you for the kind words. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Mary Rose Tallulah thank you. You are very kind.
I have the same issue. When I begin to get closer to the hurt, which also means closer to dealing with it, I shut down and feel like this will never change.
@Mary Rose Tallulah - I totally agree with you. Faith in God and Spirituality helps one find inner peace.🙏
excellent. I found EMDR therapy very helpful for this.
Research validates the effectiveness of EMDR for healing trauma, especially well-defined trauma as opposed to complicated trauma, which may have occurred over time, such as childhood abuse.
This must be why all the EMDR I've been doing for over a year hasn't gotten rid of my complex trauma. This is fairly disheartening for me and explains a lot. Kinda feeling hopeless. 😔
@@hockeymom49721 Hi, Christina. I have not been trained in EMDR. However, I have read some of the research. It appears EMDR is most effective with single episodes of trauma (like an assault or car accident), but not so much with multiple episodes or ongoing trauma (such as childhood abuse). But don't be discouraged. There are effective treatments for complex PTSD, such as a combination of CBT and mindfulness. Best wishes!
@@Serenityonlinetherapy I know that it has helped me with small issues, like a fight I witnessed between my parents when I was small and a couple other issues as well. I guess I've become discouraged because the huge issues haven't felt touched. Perhaps if we go one at a time as we've been. I also do a lot of talk therapy with me practitioner as well. I know shes open to options so all we can do is explore further. Thank you for your input and have a great Sunday.
@@hockeymom49721 I want to recommend a book to you because it will help you "tame the mind" by bringing greater mindfulness to your own thoughts and feelings. I talk about the book, which I recommend to most of my clients, in this video: ruclips.net/video/K96Mk0eVTE4/видео.html
I have some questions:1. If we eleminate the deep rooted fear will this mechanism and trigger be removed too?
2. Does meditation alone i mean focusing on breath help to reprogramm all negative past reactions?
3. What if we are not conscious about those negative triggers and cant identify them how can we get rid of them?
Hi, Kurosh. Here is the link to all my videos on mindfulness, which should offer some answers. ruclips.net/video/ynrcF44LEgA/видео.html

If only it was as easy as "forgetting your unbrella" 🙄
he doesn't say that it is. he says that purposely practicing other grounding techniques while doing what is essentially exposure therapy will get you there over time.
I wish my fear was that easy of just leaving an umbrella at home I'd be able to do it easily
idk if you can see this 9months after but leaving the umbrella at home wasn't easy for the girl. It probably took the girl multiple fails and relapses before she was able to let her trauma go. Same goes for you, and me, and anyone watching this video. I wish you the strength to carry on, friend.
Thank you so much, I have been experiencing panic from a particular absurd situation…Your video gives me great perspective and confidence. Thank you!

The way you calmly convey the message in a very clear way itself is so therapeutic.
May God bless people like you for putting out these videos for free. Thank you sir.

Maybe you will be the only person to ever understand what happened to my brain. It was 25 years ago this weekend that I lost my father. Shortly after that I was sitting at my desk at home and was famished. I went to my large fully stocked kitchen, and just stood there totally lost and perplexed. The only way I know to phrase it is that I couldn't figure out food. The refrigerator and pantry were filled, a big snack basket on the counter, restaurant delivery menus on the side of the refrigerator, a car to take me anywhere, but I could not figure out how to get food into me. That was about the most frightening thing that has ever happened to me. My not very supportive husband had to cook dinner and put it in front of me. I was practically a gourmet cook, and went totally blank. Twenty five years later and I still have lots that connection to being able to cook. Something shut off. I was raised by an abusive mother and then married an abusive man. This is such a humiliating, bizarre thing that I rarely let anyone know.

With practice described in the video, you can not only understand that you are safe, but slowly your body can learn you are, too, and then the physical symptoms will decrease as well.
