- Is the patty melt a burger or a sandwich? It’s a debate that holds a different meaning in SoCal, where the patty melt was born. To pay tribute to this underrated burger, Alvin is linking up with patty melt legend, chef Christian Page, to scout the best of what L.A. has to offer. Patty melts are such diner Staples. You see it in almost every table. The rye bread just makes the Patty melt so good.
It's funny, I hate rye bread but it's so good with a patty melt (one of my favs) and I cant imagine using any other bread.

Do you even eat out? This is in L.A., SoCal and it's a "famous restaurant." Even McDonald meals are in the $10 range for fake fries, less meat, and shit ingredients. California has one of the highest minimum wages in the country so it's not gonna be as cheap as in the dirty south...

That being said, they both looked bomb.

I love burgers with a passion and this show is amazing. I cant wait to try and cook some of them and go and try some of them
When I was in Afghanistan, I showed this local short order cook what a patty melt was like "ok grilled cheese right? Open her up. Getcha one of those patties and bingo bango you just created gold." I saw the entire step-by-step process of his mind exploding. The pure joy and excitement on his face I'll never forget. I know in my heart, he made one on his lunch break and probably broke down crying. Burgers surpass all cultural and language barriers.

I got to say I love this series so much it's one of my favorites, but I noticed y'all talk about Shake Shack and in and out a lot and they're both amazing places. I do have to say though you're missing one of the greatest fast food restaurants ever and I believe it should take a place in the top five Regional Burger fast food joints and that's Whataburger just like in and out is West Coast Shake Shack is east coast you got to have South Coast was Whataburger I love to see y'all do an episode about them sometime.

Both of those patty melts looks fantastic. The onions looks so delicious, and I like the cheese wings on the Cassell's one.
Shady Glen in Manchester, CT does a somewhat similar thing with the cheese on their famous burger. They put the slices off to the sides, let them crisp up on the griddle, and tease them up into a crown shape. It's very good, and a sight to behold. It's like a (literally) grilled cheese sandwich combined with a quality burger. If anyone ever finds themselves in the Hartford area, Shady Glen and Ted's in Meriden are must stops for burger lovers.

There is a restaurant I used to eat breakfast at almost weekly. Years ago I decided to try lunch there. They served me a patty melt with "American" processed cheese. I haven't been back since.

I live in Connecticut, and there is a diner called Shady Glen, in Manchester Connecticut…that puts four slices of cheese on a burger all four pieces overlap onto the grill and get crispy, like that guy does with his Patty melts 😋

You just don't get Diner's in the UK. I suppose the equivalent is the Cafe (or Greasy Spoon as they are affectionately called), where people doing labour intensive work can get a full English breakfast and then a sandwich for lunch. I seem to remember a bit of a fad growing up in the 80's, of American Diner's popping up here and there. But they were all called Dallas and similar, all swing doors and Stetsons, burgers and Coke. I am so jealous right now! I think I'd like a Patty Melt more than a Burger. Crunch, soft, crunch...you just don't get that with a burger. I am so making these at home...love the show, man.

Dude I know. Decent concept for a show, but watching this guy shovel burgers down his gullet every week is gross.
It's not only because he's fat, but he just doesn't present himself well on camera.
He dresses slovenly, and it only helps to make him look even bigger. His facial hair is sparse and poorly groomed. He just looks like he smells.
I'm not trying to personally attack him or anything because I know I have a few extra pounds and may not look my best everyday, but fuck, as a host for a fairly large RUclips food show, there should be some standards.
