  • Asians don't think of themselves as Asian, but as the new Silk Roads re-emerge and propel Asia to the center of the world economy, Asians are rediscovering their greatness and forging a new Asian identity for the 21st century. Parag Khanna was born in India grew up in the UAE, USA, and Germany, and in recent years has lived in London and Singapore. He is an adventure traveler, scholar, and bestselling author of six books including The Second World, Connectography, and The Future is Asian. "Global History is written in English Language, by Western Scholars, and often with Euro-centrist prisms, theories, and analogies to predict countries' behavior, almost in a default way to Asia. Asia is the most diverse, heterogeneous region on planet Earth. So rather than conquer my neighbor and subjugate them and make them like me, which is almost a European thumbnail history of Europe. In Asia it's different, it's live and let live." - Dr. Parag Khanna

      Lawrence Ausan That merely depends on what the strategy of a conqueror. The Arabs are also asian right? They conquered the middle east and forced people to believe jn their God. And what about the Babylonians, the Assyrians? Furthermore the Dutch conquered Indonesia, but didn’t force Indonesians to believe in their God. To say that it’s merely an European thing is shallow thinking.

      There is a concept that's becoming the foundation of the current colonisation 5.0 methods that is came from Asia. It's called Tributaries where kings of smaller countries paid some tribute to the Ruler of China or into the other big Empire such as one of the most famous empire in South East Asia, Singasari, Majapahit, as a mean of diplomatical subjugation. They are still free or independent to take care of their internal and external affairs as long as they recognise their overlord's superiority. And in return, the overlord will protect its tributaries from other big powers of the world.

    Great talk from Parag Khanna! I love & respect him very much! What Parag is right! Asia is the future, Asia led by China, India, Japan, Indonesia, South Korea & other Asian powers is returning to global preeminence, that's a FACT! Backed by evidence through Asia's rising economic & demographic trends, America & the West, in general, must adapt or face becoming irrelevant in an Asian led world. Global political, economic, military & cultural power is shifting to Asia, it's inevitable & there is nothing America or the West can do about it to stop it. But the minds of the elites in the West like the politicians, the media, the analysts & the intellectuals continue to think they can still dominate & shape the world, well they are WRONG! In an Asian led world, the West must change & adapt to this new world or face being left behind & become irrelevant, while Asia continues to rise & advance! GO ASIA!

    • @ohwell22
      @ohwell22 5 лет назад +5

      You mean Chinese led world, not Asian led world. Despicable China wants to swallow Asia, starting with weak poor small countries, by stealing islands that never belonged to them. The Chinese enters weak countries by bribing corrupt politicians and steal the economy. Instead of leading Asia to unite like EU and adopt 1 currency to make it powerful to be reckon with by the West, they don't, instead they want to steal the entire economy of Asia for themselves.

    Asia is too big and diverse to be considered as one entity like Europe. The people and culture of South Asia are vastly different from East Asia. In South Asia, India alone is more diverse than Europe. Then, you have Southeast Asians, West and Central Asians who are all different. The meaning of "Asian" is so broad, it's almost meaningless.

      @@SampadMohanty7 The point isn't abt strength or weakness of diversity, but that Asia is an artificial construct, historically it was never one entity whether political, cultural, racial or linguistic one. So there's no basis for it be one entity in the future. If you look at the map, Europe is actually the same landmass as West, Central and South Asia. And European have more intertwined history with West Asia (Middle East) than West Asia with East Asia, for instance.
      Ancient world economy before 1850 isn't based on real data, there was no data. Just a simplistic study based on estimated population size, more people = more GDP. But that's not relevant in modern industrialized age. Technology and productivity matters more than just population. Look up top most populated countries, most of them are underdeveloped poor countries.

    I have listened to him on other channels, where he discussed his book ' The future is Asian'. for him,
    asia will trade with each other and war will be absent since historically the region has lived peacefully. Let's hope so , but the US and other countries don't construct their foreign policy for Asia based only on history , but on human nature. And for them, humans are selfish, mistrustful of powerful countries, alliances between or among nations are temporary (and thus can be broken, so they could break the close relationship with russia and china anytime such as giving russia crimea and offering russia nato membership and promise not to expand nato before doing so,.. and thus it would be easier since russia would be suspicious of china rise. maybe they think china and russia might come apart (and russia moving closer to the US and others) without giving anything up (eg crimea). and that this might occur when russia observed china becoming stronger and testing advanced weapons (hypersonic)), and one cannot get 'unity' in such as diverse region as Asia (so they can always find alliances and break alliances)... If China, or indonesia or india become too strong, say china becomes too strong , they would form alliance with south korea, japan (even provide nation membership to these two countries) saudia arabi , isreael (giving them nato membership ) to deal with China's strength and if its continue to get stronger they might form closer alliance with additionals countries in the americas ( such as brazil, argentina, mexico etc by providing nato membership , free trade). and if india becomes strong, they might form closer alliance with pakistan, china, to keep it in check.
    The US and other countries design foreign policy based on human nature, and for them when people are powerful they could abuse that power given human nature (arrogance, etc) , so even if jamaica has no history of invading other countries in its region, but becomes powerful it might do so , so they prepare for the worse. let hope khanna is right and the region lives peacefully but many experts would think it is naive of him to think so given human nature : prejudice, cynicism, self centeredness, jealousy), so thinking that the 21 century will be the asian century since they live in the same region (and all have something in common ) is akin to thinking this century will be the human century ( or earth century ) and everyone on earth will live peacefully because they are all humans (or all live on earth). It will take more than just living next to each other( or living on same planet ) for people to live peacefully and in unity. Let's hope that is the case however though some might argue that countries living in close proximity to (as opposed those living far part or thousands of miles away such as the US vs asia) are more likely to have conflict involving border,s areas (spartly island, south china sea). they are also more likely to be mistrustful of their neighbor intent (if they see neighboring countries or a neighboring country testing weapons, military parade outside countries could exploit this mistrust and form alliance )or jealous (see skyscrapers, wealth, high speed train. and might blame this on the other country not playing by rules or obtaining this advantage unfairly)
    Other countries could exploit not only prejudice within countries but between or among countries, and side with countries or a country when it is their interest to do so, not necessarily because they are tolerant towards that country or care for it. It is akin to someone telling a person (or country) from group A ' you see person C (or country C) he/she doesn't like your group' when in fact they want person C (or country C ) not to like country A (or person A from Group A ) but use it just to divide and conquer. In other words, they would be mad if person C (from group C) likes person A from group A or country A. Humans could take advantage of division or create division even if they care about themselves and they could with whomever meets their interest for the moment. Then break and create new alliance , so today country A is their ally and in the future it is country C that becomes they ally and country A their enemies. In reality they really are not on anyone side, but form alliance by dividing and conquering. It is akin to country D , not liking country E, yet telling country E than country F doesn't like it when in fact it wants country F not to like Country E and would be mad if country F really likes country E.

    Asia has caught up to Europe, but I'm not sure if they'll be able to develop past it. Parts of Asia are already experiencing Post-Growth stage of an economy (the stage where the population begins aging, birth rates fall, so naturally, economy stagnates), a thing that took the Europeans centuries to reach (which they are also experiencing now).
    If Asian countries can innovate past the 2 major issues, Aging populations/Falling Birth rates and Climate Change, the next century will be Asian-dominated for sure, and Asia will become the next Europe, colonizing the World.
    If not, the future of Asia doesn't seem so bright.
