Old geographies, new orders -- China, India and the future of Asia: Rush Doshi at TEDxFulbright

  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Why are China and India so populous? How did they account for half of global GDP for centuries? Why did they fall from wealth and power? What does their reemergence mean for the future? What connects past and present is the enduring relevance of geography.
Fulbright from the US to China, 2011. Defense Analyst, Long Term Strategy Group. Rush uses the distant past to think about the future. He's so convinced that China and India will play pivotal roles in tomorrow's world that he learned Mandarin and Hindi. He's traveled the eastern Himalayas, the China-Burma border, and the mountain passes between China and Pakistan.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

India & China are two of the MOST ANCIENT civilizations on Earth. Even 2000 years ago...many Chinese scholars came to ancient Nalanda University & Taxila University in India for learning. Same happened the other way as well.

@oracle201212 I think, Xi or China would not do what he is doing now in securing South China Sea for them IF they didn't have bad experiences due to Western and Japanese colonialisation AND what USA did and do since WW2, controlling others and make wars everywhere. A person must be blind or totally brainwashed by pro US media all over the world if don't see the reality. Japan is actually under US, Abe is a Trump servant. USA is trying to control Germany all the time, not so easy any more because we are now in EU. USA is trying in Europe same like in Asia with 'DIVIDE ET IMPERA', trying to bring some EU nations like Poland, Hungary closer to them against EU. Again, Asian is more easily to be manipulated because they still look up to the west, incl. Chinese (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore), not mentioning SEA. American high tech industries actually built mostly by migrants from Asia.

interesting viewpoint...... Mr. Venkatesh, have you ever realized that the same mentality of seeking friendship with China at any cost was what got the Nehruvian India into the war? "At all costs" is never a good phrase for any nation's safety and security. True, a conflict might benefit the west, but so what?
China is a conflict-creator. They gobbled up Tibet. They are seizing the Northeast. They have occupied Aksai-Chin and are pushing further into Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir (which undoubtedly belongs to India). Let them agree to return our lands to us first. Just because we as Indians are too caught up with the overoptimistic "Ahimsa" business, the Chinese are taking a ride on us.
First, we should steel our country to be strong and to not fear war. We are a fearsome warrior people. Why turn lions into sheep?
As Swami Vivekanada said in Chicago:
"All of you, every single one of you, is a lion. No matter who you are. Why turn lions into meek lambs? Arise, my brethren!"

But don't pretend that Western technology did not exist. It was a major factor in the rise of Britain. @mirrorflame1988 8 лет назад +25

I am not a fan of Nehru and there are a lot of things especially the 1962 war which he could have done much better BUT many things he did - he did right. Especially the anti-coup protection and national integration. People born in our generation don't realize how vulnerable and breakbale our nation was right after independence. There were many groups which wanted to split away and make their own country - there was also the fear that the military would take over in a coup like what happened to other newly independent colonies in South Asia and elsewhere or a civil war starting due to various reasons. Also, India's population was at 400 million and growing fast while our food stockpiles were drastically low. We were facing a famine of epic proportions - our parents who were raised in the 50's/60's would remember the period when bags of aid wheat were dropped from helicopters due to famine.
Hence, Nehru and the first batch of Indian leaders had to put their priorities on integrating our country into a strong unified whole, making the armed forces an effective but insular and secular organization which has no power or ability to make a coup and solve our impending food crisis. Add to this, they also had to raise the dismal educational level of 7% higher [the number of schools, colleges and other education institutions was dismal then].
These were absolute foundational blocks that were necessary for any country to grow upon. Nehru and the first batch of leaders, though idealistic and inept in certain situations like war, they were brilliant in solving these issues and building a strong foundation that holds the country together even now.
Though the Governments that came after them were either too Communistic to care about growth or were too into communal/firebrand politics to actually do any real development hence the big growth vaccum since Nehru left and any real growth happening.

China has accomplished so much in such a short time that none in history have. India is nowhere as yet. It has a long way to go.

@@Arya_Adarsh China never wanted to rule the world, not even at its strongest time. China built the Great Wall to defend itself, and only did trading with countries including India during Zhenhe's time, when his massive Navy sailed all the way to Africa, and it is the best if you know Xuanzang, the monk who climbed the mountains to India to bring the Buddhism scripts back to China. Not like the westerner, Chinese people and Chinese culture does not interested in Unifying the other nations. India and China have been friends for over 2000 years, and Long live India-China friendship.

No educated Chinese deny that China is in large part spiritually naturalistic-Buddhistic and large rivers of such spirituality originates from India. The spiritual Chinese are in fact proud that they are connected with such deep ancient Indianistic civilisation. The border war was a stupid mistake and now a deep embarassment to the Chinese. But would Great Mother India recognize her Spiritual Offspring(s) - for it is no longer just China alone, but Japan, Korea, Vietnam, ancient South East Asia that recognizes her Spiritual Motherhood?

The 1962 border war is a deep embarrassment to the Chinese? Check out Neville Maxwell's book 'India's China war', Australian diplomat Gregory Clarks website and the recent book by former CIA analyst Bruce Riedel. They all agreed on one thing. India is the belligerent in the 1962 war.

I think the reason for population growth of India was rapid development of Health facilities and food security. Back in 1900s every couple had 10 to 12 children and only few could get past their teen age due to epidemics and famine., after 1950s heath systems improved , vaccination and modern farming techniques caused huge decline in mortality rate. 80s show a trend towards population control. "We two ours two" was a famous slogan that popularized in 80s . Now many of Indian states has zero population growth.

Europe traded with India and China not via sea, but by land (think the silk road). Only when the land route was controlled by Ottomans, Europeans had to look out for sea routes to circumvent Ottomans.
Also, Angus Maddison himself admitted in the exact same report that it was colonization which broke the economy of India and China. The data says that the coming of the British did not, at least in the first 100 years of colonial rule, make much of a difference to the growth rate of the Indian economy.

Amazing how the mountains and glaciers that erode slowly and continue to provide us with the necessary nutrition along with other weather patters across the world. The warm air from the tropics and the seas etc. With the Himalayan plateau growing, Indian sub continent should technically continue to thrive really well along with China for several millions of years to come. The shift in terms of power and position in the past couple of centuries is a tiny speck in the timeline. Geography will continue to dictate the course back to the same normalcy over the time.
