  • Building the Datsun 240Z 2JZ motor mounts can be as simple of a task as buying one of the high priced bolt in kits, or you can simply build it yourself…I prefer the latter. Why buy it if you can build it, right? Today 2J-Z gets some metal pieces cut in preparation for motor mounts so that we can finally set the engine in the bay just how we want. The down side to building these mounts is that it times time, a lot more time than simply bolting in something has already designed. Additionally, whether bolt in or not, reinforcing the frame rails in the area that we are attaching the motor mounts is very important as we don’t want any kind of frame flexing, binding or damage of any kind. I also plan to add additional support pieces in the form of gussets once we get everything tacked and identify areas that could use some reinforcement.
Drop a comment below if you have any input, ideas or ways to improve this design in the future!

Yet again, another great vid. Just some advice for you, invest in like a 60 grit flap disk for your grinder. That will help take the stress off your shoulders as they tend to grind metal easier that just a hard disk. Also some of that dust is metal, but most of it is actually grinder dust and cutoff dust, which isn't the best thing to breath in, just make sure you have like the garage door open some just to keep some kinda air flow in the garage. Now as for your mounts, their looking great. Make sure to round over all the edges and rub your bare hands acrossed all edges. Don't wanna cut the shit out of your self later on. And when you go to weld your plates to the chassis, don't fully lap them like you showed, give yourself about half the thickness of the steel overlap and that gives you a nice V to weld in and get your strength from. Good luck man and I'll be waiting for the next Vid!

Wow, these are all very great tips! Information like this is super helpful...I really need to get myself one of those flap wheels, Ross my fabricator mentioned this tool to me the other day. I absolutely HATE the dust crap...gets in my nose, hair, etc. Maybe that's why I've been feeling like shit these last 2 days...

Using a grinder takes a lot of getting used to in all aspects; your muscles, your hygiene, your health, just everything. I'm a blacksmith during the day and if I don't have a hammer in my hand, it's a grinder. Took a few months to get used to the fatigue they put on your body. As for the dust... well most nights I come home and take a shower, and I literally come out going from dark skinned to white boy white.. You find a way to change that and I'll pay big $$$ lol

Also another tip. Don't go to your hardware store and buy their grinder accessories. Find a good reviewed welding supply shop and buy from there. Much better products, and if you are willing to send the extra cash, higher end cutoffs and grinding wheels don't put off near as much dust as the cheep hardware store ones.

Oh also, I for got to mention go to like harbor freight and grab a couple welding blankets and drape them over the top of the car and cover all the glass. Sparks will screw up glass quicker than hell. The dust also will settle on the top of the car and when you wash it, it WILL screw up your paint due to it being like emery cloth material all over it. Sorry for all the "tips", your off to a great start and I just don't wanna see you do something you will regret.

Dude you need a bandsaw. Use the grinder for rounding edges and stuff. I have made motor mounts and you will not believe how much time a bandsaw will save you. Your ears and lungs will be happier too.

dude grinding that close to a painted car is a big nono.
you'll pepper up the paint work. or destroy the glass by metal getting buried into the glass
