- Welcome back to the Datsun 240z 2JZ Motor Mounts Part 3 episode. Through this little series I take you along as we build out some custom motor mounts to mount this Toyota 2JZ engine into a Datsun 240Z S30 chassis in a unique way that is a bit different than most other mounting solutions out there. In the previous episode, we worked on fabricating tabs, reinforcement pieces and started assembling the the pieces in order to prepare for final assembly on the motor mounts. One of the most controversial pieces of these motor mounts is the mounting point on the frame. There is a LOT of discussion on HybridZ about potential damage/twisting/etc that may result from supporting the engine from this point. After some research, Austin Hoke (a HybridZ member who installed a VQ engine into his Z using the frame rails) ran a couple tests to see if the street on the chassis was significant enough to change his design and he concluded that it was not.

A+ man. only tip I saw was before you weld, give yourself a clean spot for the ground to go. Will help them weld penitrate a lil more.
PS Is it bad the first thing I said was Wow, he's getting an early start today (judging from the light coming threw the door) xD
Yes, great tip on the welding! It makes SUCH a difference. Hitting it with a wire brush/flap wheel to get that bare metal will also be what I'll do from now on as well. I've learned more about welding technique this past week than I have in months!
Yeah, I need to get out to the garage sooner in the day for sure, I'm with ya!
2J-Z even wiping your parts down with acetone before will help to. Might be a lot, but all these lil tips added up make a BIG difference.
I'm just pulling your leg man lol I'm late out into the garage too, but the day job don't start like 9-10 am so I'm out till ~1-2 every night.
1dickycat Yup, that's another thin Ross mentioned to me. Great tip!
2J-Z Nice, and I've been wondering this.. how long between updates once she's in Ross' hands? I kinda wanna watch this go together, not as much just updates. You know, like someone's boss' unicorn build ;)
1dickycat LOL! I'll be grabbing footage from Ross as he works on it, but in the meantime I'll be providing 510 updates as well!
Can't wait for the 2jz to be installed!
+ERR0R ERR0R You and I both!
Great video, man. Super informative!
Your thumbnails are on point.
Lawrence Sullivan Thanks Lawrence, much appreciated
just curious why you are not using the original engine mounts and just use some larger tubing and weld your plates on an angle?
Love it man
Thanks Dylan, much appreciated!
Your welcome man. I'm in the process of trying to figure out if I wanna do rb or jz in my Z and these videos are making me go more towards a jz now. Super informative.
Dylan Kalchthaler I would love an RB, but it's just not realistic for me. Price is one main factor there. Plus, the 2JZ has such a vast aftermarket even today in 2017...it's just tough not to go 2JZ.
@2J-Z What size tap are you using for these mounting bracket holes?
one tip use more current for welding you need to melt the metal you want to join, not just melt the surface layer a bit and lay a bead on it! and a beltsanding machine would do you good!
love the cars
Thanks Sharif!
another good one.
+Cody Boyd Thanks Cody - you working on a project car?
Not right now but i have been looking and just waiting for the right 240, 260, 280 Z to cross my path to build. For now im just watching others build theirs while i continue to plan what i want to do exactly. Thanks for asking.
Where did you get the engine mount bushings from?
metal needs to be super clean for welding
What differential are you planning on running with this engine/transmission combo?
+Casper0878 I have an R230 under the car - check out my previous video on the top
+2J-Z topic*
The R230 is a 3.7 right? Do you think that will match well with the gear ratio of the CD009?
8.8 grade bolts...I dont approve
