  • I’m officially convinced that my welder hates me…at least on this particular day. In this episode, I continue working to push forward on the transmission mounting solution. This involves welding steel tabs to a reinforcement plate on the body to hold the Nissan CD009 in place. Unfortunately, my little Hobart welder doesn’t seem to want to cooperate. Go figure. We’ll get back to it and finish these things once and for all on another day. Stay tuned!

    I have the same welder. This is going to be long. Basic gist, you want to hear the weld sound like sizzling bacon, popcorn sound means you are doing something wrong.
    Those beads are awfully tall on the test piece. They aren't laying flat. On the actual piece the ones on the tab look like they aren't even structural. My guess is you are setting the welder to a guide more then adjusting it to fill a function. I would turn up the heat and slow down the wire a bit the popping is usually associated with too much wire speed or detonating air pockets in my book, bad ground is also a real thing. Get a welding magnet and stick it close to your work area on clean metal. The 240z chassis is pretty thin so I expect putting at more then the 2 setting you are going to burn through, but for welds on that plate you really want to set it to 3 or so probably 4. The texture of that plate you are using also looks like it has a lot of scale. I would get a flapper disk to really give yourself some flat areas to weld as a grinding disk is going to leave that scratchy divot which makes the bead hard to lay down.
    Also welding out of position with a mig welder is pretty difficult. Gravity does weird things to molten metal.I would say to jack up the car alot on one side make sure it is safe but sitting at an angle so you can get at the weld on a flatter surface.
    Something definitely is wrong though. If you are getting push back that is a bad ground/dirty tip/mis-sized tip. If it is popping that sounds like too much wire speed/dirty material. If it is balling up like that it also sounds like dirty material/too much wire speed.
    Usually when I teach I get them to turn up the welder until they get burn through then have them dial it down. I would get a lesson on mig from one of your talented contacts. Takes probably 30 minutes or so and you will learn way more then bashing your head against it. My shop mate was doing welds that looked like boogers like yours do, after about 15 minutes of getting him to identify the right feel and sound he was laying nice lines.

    I'm doing a very similar build with an RX7 FC. Same platform 2JZ + CD009.

    check your wire speed or voltage. your want a crispy bacon sizzling sound.. what type of welder ? flux core or gas? your got a good ground

      Ace King It ended up being my wire speed oddly enough

    Hey! Love the build! Really want to do it myself, but the 240z is really rear in Norway.
    Wondering how you plan to get the hoses from the engine to the inside heater when the engine is that far back? Or is there room? Or maybe you're not planing on having heat in the cockpit?
    Anyways, again, great build and looking forward to more videos!

      +Erlend Nilsen I probably won't run a heater but if I do end up doing it, I'm sure I could route them. Do they come straight off the back of the engine? On my L28 they came off the side of the block.

      Pretty sure they come right off the back. I know it's a problem on the 240sx s13 with a 2jz. But im Building a drifter so i dont need it 😜 just giving you a Heads up before everything is welded( if it's not too late)

    try putting your clamp onto the actual piece your welding

    you probably have not grinded the coating of of the metal from all your parts that you wanted to weld you realy want to cee blank shiney metal where you want to weld! i only cee rust or a darkish layer on your weld surface.

    I'm planning on doing this set up, as I can't find a 240 or 510 that's not a small fortune I'm looking at an e30 BMW.
    Question: How does the engine speak with the transmission? This is the only part of building that I haven't full gotten my mind around.

    • @1dickycat
      @1dickycat 7 лет назад

      Welcome To The Madness Depends on the transmission, newer ones do but most manuals dont. Autos on the other hand, just depends. Old ones used a kick down cable that would downshift when you got on the throttle. New ones are full electronic and usually have their own computer to run them.

      1dickycat even in this set up, the transmission isn't that old. 03' at the oldest...So wouldn't their be some form of communication tie in that's needed?

      Welcome To The Madness How does it speak? What do you mean?

    • @WelcomeToTheMadness
      @WelcomeToTheMadness 7 лет назад

      2J-Z speak as in," communicate with the engine" doesn't the transmission have it's own brain aka(computer) that speaks with the engine? The same way you would get a check engine light for something being wrong with your transmission. The transmission would be speaking with the other sections of the vehicle to let you know what's going on.

      Welcome To The Madness The CD009 (I belive) is still in use to this day. Manual transmissions do not talk to a computer, usually. Usually the only electronic thing on a manual trans is reverse switch for the reverse lights.

    the head on ge is way different than the gte.. block has no oil squirters too... it helps on street cars....but head ports way different.. i have both motors..a 03 is300 and 94 na supra and a jdm blue top vvti gte. the ge will never flow more than ge...and if u use that block u get no oil squirters.....even the shity 240sx stock motor has oil squirters and main bearing latter...i was shocked....get a real gte block at the end..head too...gte head valves r bigger and combustion chamber less meat....go 2j devil z

    Dude, you sound like me when I come in from the shop at night. This F*$#!*! thing won't cooperate, this won't do this, grrrrr! lol These are the worst times of building a car from scratch. Gets easier as you go on, don't get discouraged man. Just keep on a truckin!

      1dickycat Yup, these little hiccups will keep some from completing their build. I've been here before...it sucks, but we'll get through it!

      2J-Z At least it's a straight body Z and you don't have the usual issues of finding good metal to weld to or welding in subframes and floor pans back together before even starting the swap. Your already 3 steps ahead in a normal Z restoration! lol
