Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and new years! So sorry about the delay on this one. As mentioned during the intro, this was shot on December 27th. I had this edited and uploaded by the evening of the 28th. It was my goal to publish that evening after completing a very exciting project throughout the day (hinted at during the end segment of this video). Unfortunately, that project over run massively and by the time I was finished on the 29th, I'd picked up some kind of nasty virus and spent the next 4 days in bed! Needless to say I'm gutted that I wasted such a large chunk of my time off work and it sent my upload plan down the pan. Still, I was well for Christmas with the kids which is the main thing and we all had a great time. Also good news, I have the complete 'exciting project' on tape ready for editing. I also have another, completely different video ready to rock also, so things are still looking ok. Thank you for your patience, looking forward to 2020 bigstyle. Hope you'll all join me for the ride. Peace.
I hope you're fully over the virus, and good health for the coming year. Thanks for the upload, and keep us updated on how you and Jess are liking the new OS and Apps.
Great to see you again Tom! Been recently going back and watching your moving vlogs to help myself ease into moving to a new house. I know it may sound weird but I have been suffering from depression a lot recently and watching your vids and hearing you ramble about tech helps to keep me focused and happier so just thought I'd let you know! I wish you and Jess and Eli an amazing New year
My best memory is getting my first Mac (a lovely powerbook G4) and seeing the leopard intro video for the first time in person and every time I went back to look at an older version of OS X I always looked forward to the intro video so much. I miss them 😭
Just wipe the new drive and install Mac OS Mojave. On one of your other Macs Google search "How to upgrade to macOS Mojave" and click the first Apple Support link then scroll down and click the download link. It will take you to the App Store where your can download Mojave and put it on a flash drive. Boot into the flash drive in the MacBook Pro, wipe the Catalina partition then install Mojave.
Just glad to see your doing good. And fellow Sims player here, It does take up ridiculous amounts of space. Yeah my Apple stuff is quite old. My current mac is a 2010 Mini running Mojave. It works surprisingly well with a Samsung 840 EVO SSD though.
Have you looked into Affinity Photo to replace Photoshop? It's a quality single-purchase app with a MacOS version that's very reasonably priced, mostly comparable to Photoshop (although UI is quite a bit different) and can open PSD files (and more reliably than GIMP in my experience).
Add an SSD and 16 GB of RAM and you will have a very fast, impressive laptop. This presentation is well worth watching. Thanks for this. Your previous presentation inspired me to do the upgrade. And Yes. The newest SSD drives are thin and as light as a feather. 1 TB for less than $100.00 is really great.
I threw a WD Blue in my Mac Pro (Early 2007), Tom. I in fact enjoy using it these days compared to when I first got it as it’s so fast now. Hope you’re having a good evening and keep up with the good work.
The wallpaper bug is still present in Catalina it has been for many osx versions when using multi displays setups, a workaround for this is to go into system prefs, mission control and disable displays have separate spaces
I bought a Mid 2012 Unibody as my new laptop for Christmas. Best Laptop I've owned most likely, still has the original hard drive and it isn't even that slow.
A whole heap of apps I use didn’t work in Catalina so back to High Sierra I went, probably my favourite more recent release of macOS! Great video as always!!
A happy new year and all the best to you and your family dude! Always great to see one of your vids. I actually rewatched the original upgrade video a few weeks ago when i did it myself.
I use Mojave, it's awesome! Works great, looks great, more stable than Catalina, and all apps works fine. I have some 32 bit applications that I need, so I will stick with it for now.
Awesome ! I just watched your last vid on the upgrade. Got the new os installed, already popped in the ram...ordered the 500 ssd. So glad to see your machine is still running. Mine is resurrecting :-)
Does the sims 4 work with catalina? I had alot of older games that stopped working due to lack of 32bit support. Eventually I decided to downgrade to mojave.
I did the same exact thing with my Mid 2012 Macbook Pro however I originally had a 500GB SSD from Samsung like what's shown here, I upgraded to a 1TB SSD from SanDisk.
If you don't want to pay for the Photoshop subscription, you should take a look at Affinity Photo. It's the closest alternative to PS you can get and you can install it on as many machines as you want. But get it directly from the Affinity site, not the app store.
Happy new year! Tbh kind of disappointed you didn’t use the optical drive as an opportunity to use a disk because old-school, but I get that it’s handy for installing on your other machines.
I use LibreOffice, opens MS docs, and saves them too - available on all the major platforms. Also considering getting one of these Macbooks too instead of a new Windows notebook, hmm decisions decisions...
Seems like High Sierra was a pretty buggy OS. I went from a 2010 MacBook to a 2013 rMBP running Catalina. Shoulda installed Mojave, Catalina is a wreck on here
Catalina dropped support for 32bit applications thats why PS wont work, if you can install the 64bit version it will work but i'm not sure CS6 had 64bit for all applications.
Affinity Photo is what I use as a replacement for Adobe Photoshop. Bit of a learning curve but def well worth it, plus no monthly cost. Just a 1 time payment.
Dont use catalina, whole bunch apps wouldn't work, latest correctly working os is Mojave . tested by my self on macbook pro 2015. some aps just wont even install
The 64bit issue has prevented me from installing Catalline on my mac pro as I use it for music production and still have some 32bit plugins which I'd lose support for.
I wonder if you went for the 100TiB Data-Center SSD you won't have to upgrade ever again, does MAC OS have a package called The Archiver then what about compressing all the photographs to a tar.gzip, I love the music that you use on your videos.
Regarding Microsoft Office: I use Apache Open Office instead. It’s free, leave donation, opens and reads Microsoft files and is constantly upgraded. Check it out.
Great video as always, just a few things I wanted to say: 1. To those recommending Open Office, I have two things to say. First of all, Open Office is dead and has been for quite some time now. If you want open source office software, you should, if for no other reason than security updates, switch to Libre Office, which works in pretty much the exact same way. But also, I don't see much reason why you'd want to use Open Office in the first place for this use case. As Tom mentioned in the video, iWork is plenty good enough and what little compatibility you'd get with another'soffice program is likely superficial in this case. 2. Regarding 32 bit app support, it would be nice to see the community step up and create an emulation layer for these apps, just like it has for 16 bit windows apps with OT VDM for example. Perhaps such a thing already exists (if so please share).
Not sure about Office, but I am also almost a hundred percent sure Photoshop CS6 will work on Catalina, IIRC Catalina ended support for 32bit applications, while I am 100% sure Photoshop CS6 is 64bit only!
I thought you may have had issues with Word and Photoshop. My Dad uses Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6 and he had no option but to upgrade to the $10 a month subscription. It really sucks I think that Adobe needs to consider offering a one time purchase again
I don't like Software as a Service, but I can understand the need to keep the company funded. Though it'll just drive me away from their company altogether, to find a one-time payment option.
How's it running? I use PCs mostly but I have a 2009 MacBook that I'm thinking about putting an SSD into. Currently it's just sitting in the closet collecting dust but I'd like a mac laptop in addition to my hackintosh.
I have the 1Tb and have nor been able to copy my HD to SSD. When I clone it it fails or runs super slow with disk utility. When I do time machine it says it will take a month to back up to the new ssd and then fails. When I attempt to re install the new OS Into the new SSD it fails too. I have a MacBook Pro 2012 any suggestions would be appreciated

@itsmynaturalhaircolor did you check to see if that MBP was set up for TRIM support (for the SSD)? By default, 3rd party SSDs are not recognised as having native TRIM support. You can manually enable TRIM (from within the terminal) by using sudo trimforce enable and then rebooting. See also here www.howtogeek.com/222077/how-to-enable-trim-for-third-party-ssds-on-mac-os-x/ . Love your videos!!!!! Cheers!
@11 11 yeah, I just wanted to add some engagement to feed the algorythm, though RUclips's probably fiddled with it so it won't matter. Honestly, I prefer just about anything other than black when working in recessed and dimly lit areas, all these all black A/V and Tech components make entertainment centers and office set-ups dim enough to work in

is it to do with a new office? I see on jess's instagram that Eli has moved into your office room
ItsMyNaturalColour stroking the beard I see 😂. Anyhow hope everything is going alright with the family.
Maybe consider running Mojave? It's close enough to Catalina and still runs 32 bit Applications (including office and I believe CS6.)

Snow leopard still all time best tho
Try Mojave, it's miles better that all Sierras. The most stable and beautiful release since El Capitan.
2012 MBP really special, last upgradeable, first with USB 3 ports

I use Mojave, it's awesome! Works great, looks great, more stable than Catalina, and all apps works fine. I have some 32 bit applications that I need, so I will stick with it for now.
Something you could use as a Photoshop substitute is PhotoScape X. It's completely free and works very well

Don't forget there is always the free Open Office. I use it for decades.
I'd suggest Libre Office instead, it is still in active development.
When I saw CS6 icon I knew what was coming. It’s the reason I’m still on Mojave.
Does the sims 4 work with catalina? I had alot of older games that stopped working due to lack of 32bit support. Eventually I decided to downgrade to mojave.

You can use Office 2016 on Catalina. I’m pretty sure there wasn’t a subscription service on that version.
I use 2019, it's no subscription either, just don't use 365 lol.

Pretty cool, I need to soon update my mac mini from 2012 to ssd but afraid to open it up lol
I just installed an SSD in my mid-2010 Mac Mini, read through an Ifixit guide a couple times before I started and it was pretty easy.
Hey Tom! Any chance you’ve considered getting her an Optical Drive chassis for the other SSD to give her dedicated storage for stuff like her photos?
Jose the sata connection on the optical drive is not the same speed as the hdd

Mojave and Catalina require APFS so the drive would be automatically converted to APFS anyway.
Regarding Microsoft Office: I use Apache Open Office instead. It’s free, leave donation, opens and reads Microsoft files and is constantly upgraded. Check it out.
I'd suggest Libre Office instead, it has more developer support and has progressed further in features.
LibreOffice for Mac should cover most of your needs for office related tasks

You can’t go wrong with Samsung ssd there awesome ssd I say
Does she have a time machine backup that you can use to revert back to an older Mac OS so she's able to run Photoshop?
Definitely stay on Catalina... Mojave may still be kinda current but will get outdated soon...
Not sure about Office, but I am also almost a hundred percent sure Photoshop CS6 will work on Catalina, IIRC Catalina ended support for 32bit applications, while I am 100% sure Photoshop CS6 is 64bit only!
Photoshop CS6 is 64-bit but it has a lot of 32 bit dependencies and won't work at all on Catalina unfortunately
Why didn’t you do the diskdrive to HDD mod?
hello. why didn't u formated the new ssd to APFS??

I still am a bit bothered about not jumping for the larger SSD in my 2019 MBP. Gotta make do, I guess. :)

It's a 2012 13inch with a cd drive on the side.
It's crazy slow, what do you suggest I do to it please as confused what size RAM it takes and ot sure if I can change the hard drive.
Thank you in advance

Do ssds heat up older Macs like this?
thought about using affinity photo instead of photoshop? it's a one off payment and not too pricey either.
Any difference between ram being DDR3 vs DDR3L? I purchased DDR3L...
Catalina stops ALL 32 bit Apps/programs from working.
You can run photoshop cs6 on catelina just force it open

The original hard drive and ssd are at 9mm whilst the new one is at 7mm, facts no one asked for but you now know lol!
Why not just go to mojave? All your apps will work, it runs better than catalina and still newer and more up to date than high Sierra.
