@@gauravsauran8260 it’s working great even still now just as fast and what a great way to upgrade but this is the only one really worth doing it to and I think the last before apple caught on and clamped down on this behaviour
I just wanted to let you know that you have made my day with this video. I needed to upgrade my RAM of my old MacBook Pro because I needed 16GB to install an RPG and I only had 4GB on it.. you're the GOAT
This is a very clear and to the point video. I especially liked your method of putting the screws back in. Turning the screws backward until you hear a click is something I learned 60 years ago when I was working as a radio repair technician. We had problems with screws in aluminum and plastics when they had to be repeatedly unscrewed and re screwed and the threads became striped if you did not hit the right thread. The same actually applies to all small screws, if you don't find the right thread, you'll end up in trouble. I often wonder if technicians are taught this simple technique or if each individual has to just find this out for himself.
I found it out for myself but I did deal with cross threaded lug nuts occasionally when I was an auto technician so I already had an aversion to cross threading. As annoying as cross threading is when a person uses the wrong size socket or screwdriver and screws up the fastener.
Upgraded my RAM and SSD today. Your videos were very helpful. The SSD caused me some trouble, I tried using a Time Machine backup to the SSD but that didn’t work. I somehow managed to restore the HDD to the SSD and that worked. Other than that, the RAM install was super quick. My laptop is moving so so quickly now! I’m so amazed at these small changes making a huge difference to my 2012 MacBook Pro.
Ive never done anything like this before, but your video guided my through and nothing went wrong. My grandpa gave me his MacBook so I’m doing my best to make it last as long as it can!

Remote learning typically just uses a web browser. As such, you can probably get by with 4GB but I would keep other applications closed. If you need to switch between applications frequently, an upgrade to 8 or 16GB can be advantageous.

RAM is most useful if you are switching back and forth between applications frequently. If you are usually doing one thing at a time, it is not as important.
hi, i have a query regarding the ram upgrade can i upgrade the ram to 12gb like one with a 8gb and another slot with a 4gb ram, would it work or i need to put both 8gb ram in
The Macbook Pro supports dual channel mode so it is going to give you a speed boost if you install RAM in matching pairs. That being said, it is probably better to have more RAM via an unmatched pair than to have less RAM but a matched pair.

I haven't heard of a problem like that. You might try removing one memory module at a time to see if one or the other is causing the problem. You could also try installing the old RAM to see if it still occurs. This way you could tell if it is related to the RAM upgrade or if it was another problem that just showed up at the same time.
I use the ram OWC1600DDR3S 16P 16 GB DDR3L PC1:800 1600 MHz Kit (8GBx2). I followed the advice of another website. My question, is the memory fully compatible and is that the cause of the Error?
@@renevdven783 It's hard to say. That is why it would be best to swap the memory and do some testing. I have seen cases where one chip is bad while the other is good.

Within 8 hours no memory issues. After 8 hours non using and shutdown the memory error starts again. I messaged OWC for 2 new memory modules.

Having 16GB of RAM is advantageous if you run multiple applications at once. For instance, if you are editing a photo in Photoshop, then you switch to a web browser to look something up. After that you start composing an email. Having more RAM allows your computer to switch between applications more quickly and can help them run smoothly. I prefer to max out RAM so I know it is running as optimal as possible. If the computer is just being used for web browsing and not much else, a RAM upgrade isn't as likely to make as big of a difference. My parents have this same computer and I upgraded them to 8GB as they aren't really power users.
I an going to upgrade the RAM, but some people tell me no need to upgrade to 16gb, 8gb is enough because it will bottle neck at the processor. Is that right?
I think 8GB is a pretty good amount for many use cases. I used to run things like virtual machines and it is nice to have plenty of RAM breathing room. RAM is also nice when you have many applications running at once. It makes it faster to switch between them. My next Macbook after this 2012 model only had 8GB and it worked quite well. It wasn't upgradable.

New RAM, fresh SSD, my old MacBook is going strong again!
Great vid> I always told these models were impossible to upgrade due to the ram being soldered to the board? or is that bullshit to get you to upgrade the whole thing?? no doubt. Great video thanks
This is the non-retina model and it has user upgradable RAM. I think all retina models (from every year) have non-upgradable soldered RAM.
What is the right ram? Can the speed be greater than 1600?
Rick, for home schooling for remote learning, is 4 to 8 GB sufficient or is 16 recommended? Thanks
Remote learning typically just uses a web browser. As such, you can probably get by with 4GB but I would keep other applications closed. If you need to switch between applications frequently, an upgrade to 8 or 16GB can be advantageous.
also dont forget to add an ssd in if you dont have one folks!
Will this stop my beach ball from spinning?
yes, if you buy the 16gb version it will seriously reduce that
Worked like a champ, thank you!
Great to know that can run with 16 gb!
pls help me .. What should I buy 8chips or 16chips?
Sir please can you share the link for India
Unfortunately I was unable to find the memory on Amazon India when I posted the video and I checked just now and still couldn't find it.
Apple says it can support maximum memory to 8GB. If I install 16gb would it cause any problems in future?
Apple states the max is 8GB but the Intel processor in it lists the max as 16GB. I have been running 16GB in mine for around 8 years with no problems.
Hy does MacBook Pro 2012 supports 32gb of ram?
hey great vid, I already have 2 sticks of 4gb ram , but im keen to upgrade to evo860 samsung for the SSD , to boost performance and speed as well , do you think i would need to add the extra ram if im just browsing and watching movies etc, im not yet into all the editing stuff at the moment ???, cheers
RAM is most useful if you are switching back and forth between applications frequently. If you are usually doing one thing at a time, it is not as important.
I have Macbook pro13-inch mid2012 which company ram will be supported plz, and also give some suggestion about battery same
I have a link in the description to the RAM I used.
@@Rickmakes ok 😊
hi, i have a query regarding the ram upgrade can i upgrade the ram to 12gb like one with a 8gb and another slot with a 4gb ram, would it work or i need to put both 8gb ram in
The Macbook Pro supports dual channel mode so it is going to give you a speed boost if you install RAM in matching pairs. That being said, it is probably better to have more RAM via an unmatched pair than to have less RAM but a matched pair.
Could you link a set of two 4 gigs I'm not sure I need 16
Here is some 2x4GB RAM amzn.to/3Jqeaq7
Do I need to disconnect the battery to change the RAMs? Or just change them with out disconnecting the battery?
It is probably best to disconnect the battery.
Anyone knows what size screwdriver he used for the screws?

Hi. Can you tell me please? I wanna upgrade ram my old macbook, but I don't know which RAM is best my macbook. Model no: A1278 Macbook Pro 13 inch. Mid:2012. Which RAM is best my macbook?
I have links to RAM listed in the description.
thanks for sharing, i just upgraded my mac :)!
with this and the ssd upgrade can I install the newest OS ?
It doesn't run the latest macOS. The most recent version this supports is Catalina. There may be ways to hack it and run newer versions.
My MacBook is the same vintage. REALLY slow in downloaded webpages and live video streaming. Without 5G for me yet, and given that the microprocessor itself is not upgradeable (correct?), what can I do to speed up my machine (pretty much identical to this one) to stream current live video without problems, and downloading websites with a great deal of data? Will anything make a difference with 4G?
Are you getting your internet over cellular? That could be what is slowing you down.
@@Rickmakes I am, in fact. Wireless hotspot.
Worked perfectly. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Gonna upg my Mac now thank you
I have a Macbook air mid 2012 4GB is it ok to upgarde to 16GB? and when i go to your affiliate link in the description it says operating system Windows 10 ? That's a error right?
The memory used in Macs can also be used in certain PC models. I would look your computer model up on Kingston's website to see what they recommend. It will tell you the max amount supported by your system: www.kingston.com/unitedstates/us/memory
Hello
I want to buy 2 pieces of 8 gb ram for my computer whose specifications are given below.
Macbook pro A1278 13 inch 2.5GHz dual core mid 2012
intel core i5 4gb 1600MHz DDR3
67.6mm x 30mm (1.18") PC3-12800 DRR3
1600 MHz type RAM.
204pin
2 gb of ram installed on my computer is the following model.
m471b5773dh0-ck0
For RAM at Apple support
it says max memory 8gb Is this true?
Can 16gb ram be added?
DDR3L works like DDR3 ??? Or do I need to buy same DDR3
I haven't tested DDR3L in my Macs so I can't say for sure.
Did you have to reinstall mac os? Bcs im about upgrade my ram from 4gb to 8gb macpro 2010 , im scare it will erase my data like i change my hard drive from hdd to ssd before...
You don’t have to reinstall OS but you should have an updated backup prior to doing any upgrade in case anything breaks in the process.
Thank you so much for this!!!
Hey Rick quick question, what SSD card and RAM you recommend?
I have the RAM is used in the video description. I have the SSD I recommend in the description of this video: ruclips.net/video/AU4sBfDHBA8/видео.html
What’s with the screen ratio!?
I tend to do screen recordings at 720p (16:9). This makes everything larger and easier to read. The Macbook's native resolution isn't far off from 720p but I change it to keep things uniform.
I checked on apples website and for a mid 2012 MacBook Pro it states max memory is 8GB but it doesn't say if its overall of per slot? Can you upgrade to 16GB RAM?
Yes. Apple states the max is 8GB but it works with 16GB. I have been running it that way for around nine years with no problems.
is there a seagate ram model for this same device?
Seagate doesn't make RAM. Do you mean Seagate hard drive? a Seagate SATA SSD should work in it.
hi! is it possible if i buy an 8gb ram and use it together with its old 2gb ram?
Hi, unfortunately you can't, RAM should be equal in both slots
Why does it say on Apple that the Max is 8gb ram but here use all run 16gb I’ve got the same MacBook Pro?
I'm not sure why they limit. The hardware supports 16GB and I've been running it that way for 9+ years.
@@Rickmakes so will I be able to put the 16gb ram in my MacBook Pro mid 2012 I’m running macOS Catalina?
Which one should I go for 1.5V or 1.35 V I'm super confused
Please answer this
@@untukhape3081 bro i already changed mine

Thanks for this great video. Ordered the memory from your US Amazon link. They messed up. They sent 2 different memory modules... Not your fault. Just wanted to let you know
Hopefully they are able to get things straightened out for you.
Thank you so much. Now I can continue to play league of legends on my mac
It feels good to give a computer new life.
Do they have this ram upgrade for the 15in pro retina?
Unfortunately RAM isn't upgradable in the retina Macbook Pros.
@@Rickmakes If one knows how to solder, would it work to upgrade the retina mid-2012? I read somewhere that the reason it is not upgradeable is because its soldered in...
I have the same computer MacBook Pro mid 2012. I changed the memory from 8 mb to 16 mb. However every time I get a NVRAM error. (5 beeps) After Option Command +P+R everything works normal. With the memory check everything is status = ok.
Do you know why I get almost every time the NVRAM error. How to fix this?
I finally replaced the new memory with the old memory modules. No issues at all.
Now I know after the key combination option command P R memory issues are solved for 8 hours long. Within 8 hours no memory issues. After 8 hours non using and shutdown the memory error starts again. I messaged OWC for 2 new memory modules.
I send the memory to the supplier. Although they said we cannot find any issues they replaced the memory modules with new ones. After replacing them, I have no issues anymore. Thank you so much for your support. 🙏
Do you have iMovie on your mac
I do.
@@Rickmakes did you install after the update or before because I am getting an error message saying disk full i am unable load media into the time line on iMovie
I download the app from a website because my mac couldn’t support it
Hi. Can I use the KVR16LS11K2/8 instead ?
I'm not sure. The memory I put in the description is what Kingston is recommending.
Hi
Can anyone advise upgrading RAM for Macbook pro 13" 2012 mid version, Maximum 32GB.?
Supposedly the processor supports 32GB but I haven't tried it so I don't know if it works in this Mac.
i updated my RAM from 4GB to 16GB (2 x 8GB) which appeared to be fine however every time it reboots it does the '3 beeps' and I have to take the RAM out and reseat them and it appears to be fine again ....until it reboots - any suggestions?
The beeps probably mean the RAM is bad. I would try one module at a time and see if it only beeps for one. That would be your bad module.
@@Rickmakes thanks Rick - I’ve swapped the modules around and they both seem to work - tbh they’ll work for 24hrs +/- but when the system has been off for a while and I restart it beeps ……so I take it apart switch it around again and okay for the next 24/48hrs then it’ll beep again 🥴🤷🏻♂️
Is there RAM that is faster than 1600 MHz that can be upgraded for this macbook Pro?
As far as I know, that is the fastest RAM supported by this model.
Back when Apple made it an option to replace things yourself
Is this the Retina or non-Retina?
Non-retina. Retina models don't have upgradable RAM.
@@Rickmakes I know, just wanted to make sure.
What about performance now? Big differences?
Having 16GB of RAM is advantageous if you run multiple applications at once. For instance, if you are editing a photo in Photoshop, then you switch to a web browser to look something up. After that you start composing an email. Having more RAM allows your computer to switch between applications more quickly and can help them run smoothly. I prefer to max out RAM so I know it is running as optimal as possible. If the computer is just being used for web browsing and not much else, a RAM upgrade isn't as likely to make as big of a difference. My parents have this same computer and I upgraded them to 8GB as they aren't really power users.
can i use ram ddr3 1866MHz on macbook pro mid 2012
I haven't tried that so I can't say for sure.
@@Rickmakes thank you for your answer, I think I will try 8gb upgrade.
@@robbykhen I was looking for this conversation! Wondering same question. So, I also think , that I will go for 8gb upgrade instead of 16!
Thank you , guys))
@@konstantinosaka btw, I finnaly upgrade to 16gb since the price of ram is not so expensive, but it's relative.
@@robbykhen any difference between 8 and 16 ?
Does ddr4 ll work on 2012 mac book pro
No. DDR4 came out in 2014 and isn't backwards compatible.
