  • My editing computer Which I built from spare parts and pieces years ago was getting pretty sluggish and having trouble keeping up with modern software with the hardware it had. It is a late 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro. I upgrade the HDD to an SSD in this video, and even with the 8 GB of RAM there is still a dramatic improvement in performance. I can't wait until my memory upgrade comes in. I ordered 16 GB of RAM to do the upgrade to the memory. It should make this computer very usable for modern software. You can pick these computers up from Ebay for pretty cheap, and they are easily upgradable.

    Out of the many videos I had to watch in order to fix my issue and update my 2012 MacBook Pro, this was, by far, the most helpful one. All the other videos, filled with fancy graphics and techy talk, didn't address what I needed. Thank you, Luke, for making this video and taking the time you did to do it right.

    Inherited a mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Pretty slow as most are in original configuration. After some research I decided to upgrade the internals. I was intimidated by most of the videos I encountered on RUclips until I found your video. Slow, deliberate and steps in plain english has inspired me to take on this project. Thanks so much for your video. *Update* I successfully updated system. What a difference. Thanks again for your video

    I followed the video step-by-step and it worked as a charm. Thank you very much for making this video and helping so many folks like me. Two comments for people who go through the process: 1) do not forget to put the battery connection back on before closing the back, and 2) when you start cloning/restoring to the SSD, you do not have to push the IMAGE burrow, just push RESTORE and it will kick of the cloning process.

      I found how to get around this in case anyone faces the same. Go to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > FileVault > Click the lock to make changes > Turn Off FileVault. You will need to leave your laptop plugged in and I recommend making sure your laptop and charger can be both well ventilated as I had to leave my laptop on for around 24 hours to let the 'decryption' happen. After this, I was able to clone the drive successfully and install it with no problems.
      This should unencrypt the drive so you can clone it.

    Luke, about six months ago I upgraded my MacBook Pro from HDD to SSD. I was able to find a RUclips video and completed the process with no problems and got similar results. I have not been able to find that video, so I watched yours. You made the process much better. The reason that I am revisiting the process is for backup. SSDs failure rates are not high, but it does happen and I wanted a clone of my drive just in case. I don't recall the software I used to clone the SSD, but it was not Apple Disk Utility. I think it was Macrium Reflect, that is want I used on three windows machines. I am going to try your method, wish me luck. I clone all my C: drives every month to make sure I don't loose everything. Thank you so much for your video, which helped me a lot bring back to life my sluggish MacBook Pro. One only note is that you should have told that before cloning the HDD you must first turn off the FileVault in System Preferences, otherwise the main HDD will appear greyed out and you would not be able to clone it into the new SSD. Apart from that, thumbs up!

    For anyone who may find it helpful I use APFS Encrypted and when cloning it to a new SSD APFS Encrypted you first need to mount the Mac HD, then when you chose "image" it will automatically unmount the volume and clone it. If you don't mount the volume first the computer can't copy it as it will determine its locked and encrypted. Took me a couple of trial and error tries to figure it out. I like to use encrypted format on all my drives. Anyways hope this helps someone as no video on the subject explains this.

    This is absolutely the most complete correct video I needed for the exact mac I have. My memory and ssd come in next week. My mac takes about 2 minutes to load and forget actually editing anything on it. So I’m stuck using my phone for editing. I cannot wait! Thanks so much. Did you do a comparison video after changing the memory?

    • @lukeFugate
      @lukeFugate  3 года назад

      Thanks! I'm glad you liked the video. An SSD will bring it right back around.
      I never did a comparison video as it wasn't that much of an improvement. In fact I can't really tell a difference. The major improvement was from the SSD.

    Thanks for this video on how to clone a drive. I installed two SSDs in my two Windows PC laptops and they are super fast. I think I might do the same for my Mid 2009 Macbook Pro. I just hope it improves the speed of it by installing a SSD. I always get scared when I pick up my Macbook cause I can hear a small click when I lift it up. Might be coming from the hard drive.

      Do i need to select any specific format type while formatting my new ssd drive?

    • @lukeFugate

      Thanks for the sub! Mac os extended(journaled) although when you select restore it will automatically format your new drive while it clones your data. The main reason I format first is to make sure the disc is completely erased before starting.

    this style WORKS.. just an add-on .. old OS u need to unmount the drive (example = unmount drive main) then u can proceed restore to work... but this is a good guide... maybe sum1 will have this issue that the drive is in use... just unmount then proceed
