Dude, I've been wanting to update the RAM and HD on my 2012 MBP for years after it became unbearably slow. I just dealt with the slowness until I had to buy a new computer. Now I'm writing this message on my updated MBP. Thank you for this tutorial and I hope you got a commission on those links I used to buy the SSD and RAM!
The Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15in is awesome. I bought mine brand new for around $2600 back in 2012 and still using it to this day. The first thing I did was upgrade the ram to 16gb and installed a 1TB SSD. Best investment. I have so far replaced the right speaker and added a new battery. No need to buy a new laptop.
I still have the mid 2012 15inch, it has the 2.6ghz 1gb Gt 650m and I upgraded it with an ssd and 16gb ram along with fresh thermal past, and it still runs great on Catalina.
You have a fantastic machine. I have 2 of these. Both twin 500GB Evo SSD drives. Both 16Gb Ram. Both Hi Res screens. They are great machines but recently the price has gone sky high here in UK. I paid very little for mine. I wish My M1 mackbook pro had upgradable ram and nvme.
Thanks. I have one of these where I recently replaced the battery. You are giving me lots of ideas. I have a number of mac laptops that need various fixes. cheers geoff
Yaaaa WTH with the ear phone jack i got a 2010 pro dont think i can boost it any more they are easy to work on im not a geek at all cant get my camera to work on my 2017 pro wont even come on WTH clean that track pad good when your in there .....excellent video great job
Do you still have old display? that with the line.. if im not wrong is 1650x1050 resolution.. my is 1440x 900 and i would love to change it with better one.
I did all of it but still cracking on Ableton...16gb ssd retina...2.7 ghz base.. Still cannot play 3 Synthes together without overload cpu... My windows,5700 u is doing it all good
If one has a unibody (non-retina) mid-2012 15 inch, you can upgrade from the glossy 1440x900 to the higher res matte screen (1680x1050 if i recall correctly). When swapping screens, you must disconnect the battery before the screen cable, or you will destroy a tiny, cheap surface mount capacitor that is a real pain to replace (not a DIY job)
Dude, you need to align the display assembly (that’s the proper term, not the screen) for proper closure before you fully tighten the screws. I know this because I had to replace a broken hinge clutch cover on my 15” 2012 and the only way to do it it to fully remove the display assembly from the top case. And why not just create a bootable MacOS on a flash drive? There’s no recovery disk on the logic board. The installer creates a recovery partition on your newly installed SSD.
Great video... but I was a little disappointed re you actually using it to do some recording / music / video. Any chance you can do another run-through focused on that with this machine? I have 2 of them myself but haven't gotten far enough into that aspect.
Hi Jon! I actually did make a follow up to this strictly focusing on creating a song from scratch on this Mac. Here’s the link: ruclips.net/video/ib3_Ga_xZl0/видео.html
That is the macOS that originally came with it; you can upgrade to Catalina (or to Sonoma using OpenCore Legacy Patcher); for a wifi install onto a new SSD / HDD, you can choose the original (Mountain Lion) or Catalina - the difference is the key combo you use during startup - I can’t recall but a search for ‘Mac internet install latest macOS’ should find it!
Oh my God! I'm in Vietnam and I have a machine just like your video. I don't think it will be possible to upgrade it to MacOs other than Mac Catalina 10.15.7. As long as I upgrade the configuration, I can upgrade to the latest MacOs operating system, right??
Hi, if I may ask🤔what are the parts you used to upgrade this MBP and how much it it cost for part for it, I have MBP 2011 and I would like to do the same, mine has been sitting idle for 6 years as it went dead and I was thinking if I can get it running with new parts, July 2015 mine was repaired with (661-6081 ) logic board 2.2GHz Core i7 (i7-2675QM) processor. Thanks upfront 😀👍
I got one of these MBP 2012 15" and upgraded to 16GB ram and 500GB SSD and they run great. Upg to Ventura thru OCLP and it is fast and stable. Very unfortunate that Apple don't make their products upgradable by the users anymore. That is why I stay clear of used M1 and M2 MB because don't know how used the storage is and once the read/write is used up or battery cycle pass 500 can't really do anything about it. Would be interesting to see how the OCLP team deal with Apple's new OS that need the M series chips for the AI features.
I put in 16GB of Ram back in 2014 with hyper threading. My computer was always pretty fast, but I haven't used it in years. Catalina is the last operating system I have right now. It has 1 Tb hard drive but it's a SATA disk. I should probably change that and the battery. Its been so long since I worked on computers, so this might be a dumb question but, is the 16GB I put in years ago, the same as a newer 16GB ? Would a new one be faster, or don't I have to mess with that ? A bit short on cash, and I want to start recording music too, but don't want to spend an arm and leg for a new Mac book. Thanks for the video !!!!! Can't wait to see yer recordings !!!! Oh, should I upgrade to Ventura, or stay on Catalina ? :-)
It’s not a dumb question at all! Generally speaking, the 16GB you installed back then is identical in speed to 16GB you could buy today. In other words, replacing that memory with newer memory would yield little to no difference in performance.
@@BigJakeMusic Thanks for your reply !!! It was always a fast laptop, but it's crazy how just a few short years ages a computer so it looks like a dinosaur...lol I'll just replace the battery and get a faster hard drive and get ready to record !!! Happy 4th !!! Have a great day !!! 👍😁👍 Oh.... Ps. Do you think I should upgrade to Ventura, or just stay with Catalina ?
Hey dont blow the fans like that and let them spin. Hold the blade then blow. You can send a reverse minor electric current back into it and possibly fuck your board up. Great video though dude. I keep a clean toothbrush I use the dig into the blades to loosen up dust then blow them out. you can take the three screws from the fan. Lift it up and clean under them and the little black filter thing that collects shit

im surprised you just got 10 views, just hit the like button
Thank you so much!

Hi there I still have my mac mid 2012! It's a beast bro! you got it :D:
Thanks. I have one of these where I recently replaced the battery. You are giving me lots of ideas. I have a number of mac laptops that need various fixes. cheers geoff
Great overview. I have done most everything except the OS upgrade. Would love to see someone come up with a way to improve the bluetooth
15:54 What you said was the case for Windows, MacOS however sees it differently
You should disconnect the fans before hitting them with the air duster, so as not to generate current back into your mainboard.
Pointless look at the schematic.
Thanks Jake
Of course!

The upload/download speeds are still a dream for me.
We're still dealing with less than 10mbps

Can I ask something is it possible to change my display to non retina to retina?! What is the best display to upgrade my 2012 MacBook Pro.. thank you

Also with Bigsur The original wi fi card doesn’t work? Thanks a lot
Where did you get your replacement screen? I'm trying to find one! Thx:)
Nice work. How much would you charge to upgrade my 2012 MacBook Pro? One 13" and 15"'.
Do it yourself. Learn something.

@@BigJakeMusic Excellent!
When I erased my ssd, it booted up to mountain lion. Could this be me accidentally choosing that os or maybe the Mac only had that only choice?

Bro where can I purchase a screen for a my mid 2012 MacBook pro?
I got an spare mid 2012 Mac book air would it work the same way? Or would it be a pain in the backside?

Yes SOOOOO funny.
Could i change the Macbook Pro 2012 screen non retina to an actually retina screen?

Use Google. Thats what people do.

Right now it can be upgraded to OCLP Ventura on this devices even for the 15" 8GB max of ram..
Mine has 16gb, 500gb, and it running Sonoma, Battery count is 6 and is a great Machine I also have a twin running Rocky Linux. Excellent.
Is it possible to upgrade the ram to 32gb or 64gb?

So with the ssd how does it come with Os ?
It doesn't. You need to install it. Very easy. Watch Mr. Macintosh.

Is is a shame that Apple have made upgrading an M1 or M2 processor possible.
