What if in the Keyboard Illumination setting on bios doesn't have the option for Disable, Dim, or Bright?
I was too lazy do this and I found a different super easy way, all you have to do is press "Fn" key next to "ctrl" key and your backlite button (Mine was F5) yw if this worked.
I have the keyboard illumination option in BIOS but if does not have any option to choose like Dim, Disabled or Bright. Please help
Bro I’m so stupid thank you so muchhhh. Had the little half sun symbol on F7 and must’ve clicked it by accident which turned off the backlight. Pressed it and it lit up. THANK YOU I LOVE YOU, YOURE SO SMART 0:21

I have tried all of these steps to include Fn+F10, ESC+Fn+F10, and through the BIOS. I don't know what to do next. HELP!
Try reinstalling that crappy software Alienware. It worked for me.

Just update the bios(even if you have the latest bios just reinstall it and after the install it may ask for a product key).

I read you can buy a backlit keyboard and make it work, a poster on Dell forum did that. I have a latitude 5580 FHD 1080p 16gb i7-7820HQ and if I buy the backlit keyboard for a 5580 , is the bios going to see it?
Or just simply press, F5. You could have easily hit that key, and turn the backlight off on the keyboard. *For model i5*

The BIOS thing didn't work for me. It only worked when I installed the Alienware drive. Worth trying it if this video didn't help you.

The latest BIOS 1.13 update broke my G5 5500 backlight feature. Tried following these instructions but even when I turn backlight on, apply & exit, the backlight would only come on while in BIOS. I think it's definitely a software issue because backlight was fine before the BIOS update. Contacted Dell Support, they made me rollback BIOS but as soon as I rollback & restart, Windows 11 forces it back to 1.13! Weird since Windows 11 classifies this as an optional firmware update but forces it as soon as I rollback. Last was Dell Support telling me to reinstall my OS! Hell no! If they don't release a Hotfix BIOS update to repair that would be unjust... After 20+ yrs of brand loyalty this unacceptable.

@@johnpaul-kz6bq sorry not yet, my case was escalated to Dell Product Engineering Team but they said it may take them days to get back to me. Another person in Dell Community forums also suffered the same thing so looks like this isn't isolated. I think our only hope is another BIOS update. You can also try rollback to older BIOS & hopefully Windows wont force you back. But don't try reinstalling Windows, the other person with the same issue tried that already & it didn't help.

@@johnpaul-kz6bq someone on the Dell message boards stumbled on a fix. Basically he had to keep fighting Windows by rolling back to BIOS version 1.10 several times before Windows finally gave up on forcing him back to 1.13. His keyboard backlight is back. Personally I'm not sure I'm willing to use this solution since:-
1. Even the slightest error or power fluctuations during a BIOS update can brick a machine.
2. Jumping that many versions back opens your system to many known security vulnerabilities.
If you do decide to risk & attempt this let me know how many times you had to rollback before Windows gives up.
@@johnpaul-kz6bq Dell Product Engineering Team sent me the following troubleshooting steps but I'm at work & won't be able to try it until later tonight. You can give them a shot if you like: -
"Could you check if the issue persists in safe mode? Please follow the steps given below to boot into Safe mode:
1. Type ‘Settings’ in the search bar and press enter.
2. Select Update & security > Recovery.
3. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
4. After your PC restarts to the ‘Choose an option screen’, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
5. After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select 4 or F4 to start your PC in Safe Mode. Or if you'll need to use the Internet, select 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking."

hi 👍still isn't working, bios is up to date and i have changed the setting in bios to "bright" like three times but it does not work, even though i saved changes. i even did it once where i "save changes without exiting" just to be sure, but fn+f5 still does nothing.
i just got my laptop back from repair and they said one of the things they replaced was the keyboard. so it should be brand new, any ideas?

@@BluVid I had just gotten it back from the dell repair shop and I guess when they replaced the keyboard they had forgotten to connect the keyboard lighting so we sent it back in. Sorry I can't help more than that

Figured out the the fastest way to trouble shoot is to just click F5 and see if you accidentally turned it off

In my experience, it depends on the model and BIOS revision. I upgraded an E6510 to a backlit keyboard from a non-backlit one, and it actually worked.
