I also love the joke when Phoebe Cates starts to go into another tragic monologue like the first.
You can even hear Zach Galligan start to crack up before leaving the frame. Classic.
To this day I have no fucking clue what she’s ranting about in the second one
MR. GOONCH something about Abe Lincoln’s birthday I believe
@@SofaPop. That's kinda the point. Billy interrupts her halfway through to tell her "We don't have time for this."
@@SofaPop. she was approached by a stranger in the park and, well...
I highly agree, Gremlins 2 in my eyes is better than the original, but despite that both of them were great, I still think Gremlins 2 is kind of misunderstood and underrated, seriously 6.3 on IMDB? what the hell, the sequel actually works as a smart satire mocking on social entertainment media countlessly breaking the fourth wall, it's a great watch, I like the fact that developers actually decided to take risks and adding enough artistic freedom to the sequel openly mocking the original but still respects it at the same time, you needed some serious pair of balls to pull that off
Very misunderstood gem! It's satire at it's finest haha.
"You mean a Gremlin that wears glasses, can talk, and sing New York New York? Love It! It's in the movie! NExt!"
Jason Zaremba - electricity gremlin? You just said noun and gremlin in the same sentence... you talking about a gremlin made purely of electricity and is done 100% in animation---- you have the brain of a child... your not that smart but your idea is in the movie!
you're talking about hulk hogan - professional wrestler, turned actor, turned cultural icon, in the movie where he breaks the fourth wall of the movie he's in by talking to the audience?
YOU, sir, are a raging psychopath. don't let this town take that away from you.
That sketch was awesome even though it was making fun of G2 hehe
"Googly eyed gremlin? You talkin' about a gremlin whose sole purpose in the movie is just that he looks stupid as fuck? Yes it can be in the movie and yes it will be in the movie!"
One of my favorite memories of this film was that, upon first seeing it in the theater, the film broke early in the showing. No big deal. Happened all the time back in the days of real film. But when the film breaks in the 4th wall segment, it made that even funnier because everyone in the audience thought "Here we go again!" It was a great gag made even more amazing by projector issues!
***** I can't imagine the shock and joy of all the people in the theaters when that happened. What a great gag
It was one of the biggest laughs I've ever heard in a movie theater due to the meta nature of the moment!
Your a Freaking LOW LIFE TOOL
The projectionist or the manager may have done that on purpose.
I have a weird history with this film. As a young child, I loved it for its whacked out humor and visuals. As an older child and teen, I hated it for being such a radical departure. Now as an adult... I love it more than ever for its clever self-satire, commentary on American culture and sequels, and wild imagination. Sorry to those that dislike it... but I think its better than the original in every capacity. (And I adore the original.)
Meh...whatever you’re so cool
That sounds like my experience with the Sam Rami Spiderman Trilogy.
while i think Gremlins 2 is great, I just love the Santa story of the first one haha
I remember my dad getting so excited after he recorded it on vhs and presenting it to us like it was the holy grail of film. I have fond memories of it and even when I was kid I knew it was wacky.
I know im asking randomly but does anyone know a way to get back into an instagram account?
I somehow lost the account password. I would love any tricks you can offer me
Gremlins 2, Terminator 2, and Aliens. The three greatest 80s movie sequels.
(Edit: 80s movie sequels = sequels to 80s movies.
Stop 'correcting' me that T2 and Gremlins 2 came out in the 90s. I know! I've always known! This comment is ruining my life)
Copydot T2 was the 90s.
Back to the Future 2
Rocky IV
Empire Strikes Back, Aliens and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. T2 and Gremlins 2 came out in the ‘90s.
Copydot: Lethal Weapon 2
I dont understand how anyone who even remotely enjoyed the first movie couldn't LOVE part 2. Like you said - it's a better version of part 1 in every way. I laugh my ass off every single time I watch this and I'm always blown away by the effects. It must have been an absolute blast making this film. It's a damn shame they don't make em like this anymore.
damn, the ginger twin scientist are in terminator 2 !
They had been in heaps of movies before terminator 2. They were so recognisable the effect of the scene in terminator 2 was somewhat lost at the time.
& Good Morning, Vietnam.
They are also in Erie Indiana.
Thing is, Gremlins has become a part of pop culture more so than Dick Tracey could even dream of. So it probably made its money back through the year with massive profit margins.
Yes but not gremlins 2. People hate it.
@@Jeff-mn1uq everyone o know whose watched it loved it including myself
@@Jeff-mn1uq who does? Everyone i know loves it..Interestingly enough i've never seen Dick Tracy and don't know anybody that has( i've read a couple of the og comics though).
@@Eisenwulf666 do you want me to make you list? Also great point but uh oh dang it everyone I know hates it.
it tragic that if gremlins get a third movie that it would more likely be a remake than a sequal and the gremlins will be CGI
jordan porter CGI Gremlins would be just awful
GoodBadFlicks true that. the animatronics in these gremlins movies are amazing and feel real unlike so many other CGI stuff. i mean one of the main reasons why i love Little Shop Of Horrors musical is because Audrey two looks so real because it actually there and it also helps the frank oz also helped designed the planet. but if there is a remake of that movie Audrey two would be CGI and it would not be the same
jordan porter You can say that again. Part of the charm is the animatronics and puppetry that goes into the gremlins. As good as CGI is, something about the way that one attacked Clamp or when Spike jumps out of the control panel to latch on to that one suit just looks more real, just looks better than a CGI attacker.
I'm not knockin CGI. When it's done right and used properly like in Jurassic Park or Godzilla 2014, it looks amazing, feels amazing. However, with conventional effects, there's something solid for the cast to work with.
I couldn't imagine a CGI Audrey II.
Syphon Filter i know right. i mean think of the animatronics used in little shop of horrors, the puppet was made by the same guys who worked on the Muppets. same with the Ninja turtles in the first two live action movies
Nothing, not even computer effects in 2017, could beat the puppets from the original.
The best of the callbacks is the story about getting flashed by a guy that looked like Abraham Lincoln on Presidents' Day, echoing the horrifying Christmas tragedy from the first movie.
I loved this film ever since I was child, and with the dante backstory I love it even more :D
I recently re-watched this film and I'm 100 percent convinced that the key and peele sketch with the flamboyant "script editor" that went through the writers room and took all the most random ideas into the film is totally how all the weird gremlins came to be.
"So you want a girl gremlin with boobies? Guess what, it's in movie. No, it's definitely in the movie!" 😂
FUN FACT: Clamp's end-of-the-world broadcast is based on an actual tape that Ted Turner has in case we are about to face armageddon.
WHAT!?!? No way! I didn't know that. Gotta be the first network to cover Armageddon.
Tony Randall being the voice of a Gremlin is pure insane genius.
RIP, Christopher Lee
Hell yeah Slayer! One of my first albums.
When I was a kid, I LOVED this movie. I hadn’t even seen the first one. I watched it so often that the tape broke. My poor grandmother was probably SO sick of watching it. She probably shuddered every time she heard the theme music. May she Rest In Peace, what a patient woman!
Seriously, I haven’t seen this movie in years but I remember every single bit of it from watching it over and over as a kid. I was born in 1987 so I missed the first one. I saw it later, as an adult, but it just couldn’t top my love of the second. This movie will always be nostalgic for me.
Gremlins 2, the brave little toaster, and all dogs go to heaven. My top 3 favorite movies as a kid that I watched over and over until the VHS broke. 😂
There is nothing bad about Gremlins 2. It is the most perfect work of art in human history.
that's going overboard c'mon.
God put a copy of Gremlins 2 in the Arc of the Covenant, and when God looked inside, His face melted off.
LAVATORR yeah because if god existed, he would have his face melted off by a movie from 1990. yup, that would be what blew god's mind. a movie. with animatronic puppets.
sarin royce Animatronic puppets voiced by Tony Randall that sing and dance and piss off Christopher Lee, yes.
I'm sorry, but if you can think of a greater plot twist than "The gremlin eats a vegetable potion and now is made of vegetables, much to the irritation of Christopher Lee," I'd be glad to hear it.
LAVATORR no you're right. this is the single greatest plot in human history. i can't honestly think of anything greater. in the centuries of human creativity, this tops it all. this belongs in the vault of movies that contributed to historical significance, right there with forrest gump and gone with the wind.but this movie beats both of those movies by a long shot of course! decades from now people will learn from this movie and future movies will be shaped by it, its a complete masterpiece.
While I love the first movie, I've always preferred the sequel. Such a fun, funny, brilliant flick!
God I used to watch this all the time on VHS when I was waaaaaay younger, have no idea it was poorly received back in the day! Needless to say I adored this film when I was a small boy and even to this day!
I have a prequel idea for a third Gremlins movie:
Set around WW2, a bunch of explorers go try to find the mythical Shangri-La, but instead they find an underground society of Mogwais. They capture a bunch of them, but then one of them gets to eat after midnight and turns into a ferocious Gremlin who kills all the explorers and then it rains, causing him to multiply to turn into a huge army of Gremlins and they rampage the Mogwai village, committing a small-scale genocide. One Mogwai, who will turn out to be Gizmo, manages to survive and runs away from the Gremlins coming after him, until the sun rises and thus kills all the Gremlins, while Gizmo hides from the light.
Then Gizmo is later discovered and picked up by a young Mr. Wing, who decides to take care of him and learns all the rules: first he discovers that Mogwais multiply if they're wet, and then tragically, he learns how they can turn into Gremlins and he and his family struggle and prevent a Gremlin outbreak, but unfortunately Wing is left without an eye.
In the third act, some survived Gizmo clones arrive at an airport and there they come aboard various USA aircrafts and planes causing various kinds of mayhem when transformed into Gremlins, thus spawining the whole legend on the Gremlins and the Looney Tunes shorts about them, then the movie ends with Mr. Wing moving in America with Gizmo or something.
...Any thoughts?
I think making a prequel would be better than continuing from the second movie or... Urgh... REMAKING the original...
DeepEye1994 That's a pretty good idea. I'd watch that. I like that it also explains how the world comes to know about gremlins. Plus it sounds dark. Not too dark, but enough so that it wouldn't be a diluted shadow of the movies before it. The other two were dark. A third should be as well. Very cool!
DeepEye1994, ***** Compromise! The aliens sent the Mogwai to that cave in Shangri-La - ya know, in a very Garden of Eden kind of way (how's that for staying true to thematic source material). Then the explorers interfere into the alien's interstellar foster care.
I liked DeepEye1994's idea, so boo to you Judge Hazzard for your over the top - albeit well-crafted - criticism of people who haven't read esoteric books that can hardly be considered "source material."
With some help, DeepEye1994, I would not mind at all drafting a script for that reboot, because I think you really have something!
Andrew Hoopes Allright! They go search for Shangri-La and it turns out to be some kind of alien colony with the Mogwais.
In that way everyone is happy, including those who happened to have read that book.
tl;dr but YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. Tieing the series to WWII would be the perfect route to go, unlike the novelizations which imply that the Mogwai are aliens.
Now that I read your comment I really want to see it made into a movie
The sad part is the current major studios are, as ever, so heavily focused on opening weekends that even if a movie like this goes on to make a sizable profit in DVD sales and home rentals, it's still considered a "flop" because it didn't hit number 1 on opening day - and is, therefore, a dead property. Whereas terrible movies that get released and have big opening weekends always get sequels now, even if they barely manage to eek out a profit through to retail sales and home rental. And then the studios wonder why so many of them are going bankrupt.
***** Indeed, many of them were. Without bothering to do research, I'd wager most of them were.
RandomTXDude210 Dredd broke all sorts of sales records on DVD/Blu and the studio still refused to make a sequel.
so stupid grimlins 2 was shit an electric mother fuxkin grimlin and a batman sign when a bat grumlin flies out i was young and i still knew this movie was stupid and fake
+GoodBadFlicks So a film performed poorly because of a lack of proper marketing, and the studio puts the film at fault? Is that truly the logic that most studios are going by?
+California Girl i really hope u are trolling. Gremlins is not hard to spell
I'd shown the movie to a couple friends of mine. When the one saw "Rambo Giz," he'd stared at the TV, dumbfounded, and then shook his head in quizzical dismay and said, "Dude! That was both kick-ass and adorable, at the same time!"
this is one of the rare times when a sequel is much better than the original
+BloodySJohnson like terminator
MadScientist3000 I said MUCH better
BloodySJohnson and i said LIKE TERMINATOR
not counting 3 or 4 or 5, just the original sequel
oh so you did understand me, just don't have taste. ok.
BloodySJohnson i do have taste, in different things, you need to understand that different people like different things
I believe this movie would not have been possible without input from Star Magic Jackson JR...
thank u for that comment xD
+boob72 lipstick, boobies bitch you had me at little gremlin va-jay-jay!
+boob72 I was just watching that skit, that's why im here lol
I had to come here to confirm all that nonsense!
boob72 "you sir, are a raving psychopath....and your idea is in the movie!" :)
Gremlins 2 is a classic masterpiece in my mind. Nostalgia is king for me, though. Nice video review. I learned a lot about the making of this flick. Very informative and interesting. I subscribed to your channel. Good stuff - keep em coming.
Steve Stevensteverson thanks you!
GoodBadFlicks how about "Critters" review?
Kindof amazing that there wasn't an '80s cartoon of Gremlins
The New Batch is a film I enjoy more and more as time passes, not sure why.
The redhead in glasses was SO fucking hot. Never realised this as a kid, hah, it was all about Phoebe Cates then.
Really cool youtube channel btw!
Thanks!
i really like the way you give behind the scene breakdowns and cool facts besides just reviewing the movie, it makes it much more interesting
Haviland Morris
Brendanamus Maximus she also played Bruce Willis's mom in The Fifth Element
yeah i agree ,she was frikkin smokin
This might be the only case of setting a sequel to an 80s film in the big city and having it pay off. (Compare with Beastmaster 2, for example.)
Doug Glassman so many "fish out of water" Beastmaster 2 was so disappointing compared to the first
+Doug Glassman I think Predator 2 was a pretty strong sequel that follows this formula. Taking the Predator out of the jungle and into a big city (Los Angeles).
There was a Beastmaster 2!?
liamobrienfangirl theres a Beastmaster 3!!
Mia imo Predator 2s tragic flaw is what many not too distant future films do. In setting the film in a setting thats only a few years in the future, it immediately dates itself. The only way it can be taken now is either an alternate reality, or an incorrect 1997. It depicts a 1997 that does not come to fruition. Now certainly many movies have depicted future times that dont come to pass. But its one thing to have a film like Back to the Future 2 set in a 2015 that doesnt happen as it was deliberately done almost cartoonish and satirical, and it was also made 25 years before it happened. Same thing with 2001... But a 1990 film set in 1997 ahere LA has become a breeding grund for a gang warzone? Come on... And led by a gang thats spearheaded by a voodoo practitioner? The wonderful tjing about the first Predator is, fictitious or not, its not hard to suspend disbelief and it makes the goings on much easier to imagine as actually possible. But when you cant even depict the actually real world proceedings as believable... And a few years later its clear this version of LA is totally bogus... Well it sinks the believable into wholly unbelievable. And tho I dig Danny Glover. Hes not exactly someone Id put at the top of the list when were writing out who should succeed Arnold in the franchise lol One major thing always bothered me too... The predator takes off his helmet in this film and we still see him visualizing infrared bodyheat... Big big BIG error. But the finale is quite awesome.
Gremlins 2 is super underrated! Love this film and can't wait for 3!
"I'm sorry. Let me introduce myself. Hi y'all! My name is Star Magic Jackson Jr. - I'm the Hollywood sequel doctor. So, studio just brings me in to oversee things when they 'bout to drop a douce."
H A my first thought when starting the video, haha.
Oh, ha ha ha.
You aren't even in the same zip code as trying to be funny.
Don't quite your day & night job.
I know I'm late to the party on this but FINALLY someone who reviewed this movie like it should be reviewed. I get so sick of people saying "It wasn't like the original." Well, it wasn't supposed to be. The damn movie starts out with a Bugs and Daffy sequence - that told you exactly where this movie was going. I heard they might remake Gremlins, I really don't care either way. Go ahead and remake it. But don't touch The New Batch. It's a movie that knows exactly what it is and that's what make it awesome, IMO, Gremlins 2: The New Batch is right up there with comedies like Airplane, The Naked Gun and Dumb & Dumber. Where else do you have a movie with a funny computer voice? "Fire, man's greatest mystery, giver of warmth, destroyer of forest, this building is on fire." One of the most classic lines in movie history.
Umar Soaries "Fire, the untamed element"
What did the Bugs and Daffy sequence tell me about where it was going? That it was going to be zanier and full of in-jokes? It wasn't even a whole cartoon, as it should've been.
Well, it is now *twenty-five* *years* since _Gremlins_ _2_ first came out. Time for a 25th-Anniversary Special Edition Blu-Ray and DVD. ;D
No.
Time for a 3rd installment.
As a kid growing up watching both Gremlins. The spider Gremlin scene was my favorite because of the crazy wild solo and now as an adult(weird saying that as I'm 19) finding out one of my favorite Slayer solos is in one of my favorite childhood movie makes me wanna watch the movie now. Thank you for making this video!
Gremlins 2 is a brilliant movie. I love the physical creature effects. No CGI, just a little movie magic. That's what made all these older movies so amazing. Also, a very good video! You did your research and it was interesting! I had no idea about all the little cameos in the movie!
Andreazor Thanks!
Creativity goes a long way, this movie is a very underrated sequel thanks for sharing the gospel!

So back then, on a whim, i could choose to go to the cinema to watch a new movie and i could choose from:
Another 48 Hours
Total Recall
Back To The Future 3
Gremlins 2
Pretty Woman
Cadillac Man
TMNT
(.... maybe Bird on a Wire and i've already seen Milo and Otis 20x by that point.)
While today my choices are:
Vacation
Transporter 10
We Are Your Friends
Fantastic Four
Vacation was good
1990 was a great year for movies, but the best year I can remember is 1989. Look it up, some of the best movies came out that year.
82 is another classic year for films.
This review is right on the money. Not only is Gremlins 2 a better film than Gremlins 1 (which i also love), but it's most likely the best film Joe Dante ever made!
I think his best film is Matinee which like this didn't make a splash at the box office unfortunately.
I *DO* love Matinee !! It's not my favorite, but I certainly love it. Explorers from 1985 is another favorite of mine. Explorers has my favorite ever Jerry Goldsmith score.
+Narpin to be fair I haven't seen Explorers yet or The Burbs or Innerspace. So Matinee is my favorite of the Joe Dante movies I've seen but maybe that will change once I see the other 3 I listed
+Christopher Hamilton Good lord I am so jealous of you. I would love to be able to see The Burbs and Innerspace again for the first time The Burbs is a magnificiently weird black comedy with a very funny Tom Hanks performance (his shell shock is hysterical). Innerspace is just a damn fun summer movie with some visual effects that still hold up to this day I think.
+Razor Blast check out Dog Soldiers for a badass werewolf movie
Great trivia section/did you know. Honestly I grew up with this one and have always loved it more than part 1. It is totally an underrated film.
Key and Peele brought me here
Me too
Same....
Because of the 'black comedy'?
They are awful!
You had me at little gremlin vajayjay
Really good ! One of the best commentary on a movie I have heard.
Thank you!
Brilliant work! Love the trivia and intelligent commentary.
+lisvender Thank you!
It's a great shame that Hollywood can crap out 17 sequels to Friday the 13th, but we never got another Gremlins. I agree Part 2 is so much better. One of the funniest comedy's of that era. I love so much the moment where that smug guy is complaining that the 'no eating' rule makes no sense because of different time zones.. and the gremlin just comes bursting out of the computer and attacks him. Hilarious!
the first was absurd, but it's sequel RIDICULOUS. if there is indeed a line, this one crossed it. repeatedly. (Hulk Hogan addressing the audience? the Batman symbol? craziness.)
Brain Gremlin: *Shoots crazy Gremlin* Now was that civilized? Of course not, fun of course but by no means civilized.
I loved it. Loved the satire, the silliness, and the creative freedom.
Omg!!!!!! I had that orange soft cover movie book! Omg!!!! I forgot all about that! I got it from our school's annual book fair! What memories!!!!! I saw the original with my parents!
Nice to see someone else that likes this movie more than the first. I love this damn movie so much
The reason that Scream succeeded was because almost nobody took it as a satire/comedy. That aspect was too subtle for the audience. Sadly, everyone think on Scream as a legit horror flick.
I saw this one first because it was showing on TV. I went back to watch Gremlins 1 later and hated it because the tone was so much darker. After rewatching the first, I love it now, but I still love this one more. I can only say that if you were looking for a horror movie, this would have not fit that bill, but it's a fun horror/comedy.
Gremlins 2 is my favorite movie. I love Mohawk!!
Your as dumb looking as this movie is and the first one
This movie could never be made today. Its so well written and clever as hell. I love it. It was ahead of its time.
One of my favorite sequels right along Aliens and Predator 2.
Predator 2 gets too much crap.
Allen Babylon
Waaay too much. It's such a great sequel that introduced A LOT of staples and did nothing to diminish the first.
MattPerrette87 I had an idea for another Predator movie a while back, where the soldiers from Predators return to Earth, only to be detained in Area 51. They are placed in a prison alongside Arnold and Glover, who were collected to keep everything quiet. A group of Yautja followed the ship and attack Area 51. Arnold and the others get loose and are stuck in the middle of the fight. I called it Predator: Apex. Just a fun thought.
You should try to find the old Alien vs Predator arcade game. It's a side-scrolling beat-them-up and is absolutely amazing. It also takes place in continuity to an old Aliens vs Predator book series. It's all from the early 90's, before AvP ever existed.
I don't think Iv ever met another person who likes Predator 2 over the original
I still think the first Gremlins is the best, though I really do like the sequel as well.
Agreed
No way, Gremlins 2 is better on every level possible.
I'm all about gremlins since its more of a scary flick. I think its just a little more polished. Gremlins 2 while very good is just a little too off the wall goofy for me.
Star Magic Jackson JR nailed it!
2:23 That's the guy who played the hologram doctor on Star Trek, Voyager.
the only thing I can think that you missed is when released on home video the scene in the movie theater with Hulk Hogan was replaced.
Replaced? I never saw this in the theater.
Texas82able - yeah, in the video release instead of it making it look like gremlins were in the projection booth it was like they were in the VCR or TV. I can't remember too much, I just remember the scene with Hulk was missing. I loved that part too!
I never got why this movie got so much hate. I was 8 when it came out and I loved this flick from day one! Sure, its a lot different than the first but in its own way I find it superior. And honestly, there were some genuinely scary scenes in both gremlin movies but the second had a more menacing but still light-hearted tone (that spider gremlin gave me nightmares for YEARS afterword).
I really dig what you're doing uploader! These are very informative and entertaining, keep it up sir!!!!
I actually saw Gremlins 2 before watching the original. Both movies are great, but I still have to say that The New Batch is more enjoyable. The original movie is much darker and tries to be a horror-comedy. The New Batch actually IS a horror-comedy and one of the best of its kind too ;)
You forgot the Bugs Bunny opening!
I"ve never heard of anyone saying Gremlins 2 is a bad movie... or maybe I don't understand the name of this RUclips channel. I'm liking the videos I've seen so far, though!
I've also never heard of Paul Bartel go by the first name 'Dick', but maybe that's something I just don't know.
I goofed
No, I'm not from Earth, which is why I've never heard of anyone saying Gremlins 2 is a bad movie. However, on your planet, it's still not known at all as a 'giant fucking mess of horridness'. Do you like music?
i too have never heard anyone from earth say a bad thing about this film. but, like you, i am not from this planet.
what i am most curious about is the phrase "Ya dumb ass." is this an honorary title given to people with superior intellect on this planet? he must hold you in high regard, indeed! why, when the xelutons from my planet come to destroy this pale blue dot we will surely put you on the list of persons of interest!
so thank you, most graciously, for pointing this out alec trebek. Ya dumb ass.
Gremlins 2 is a powerhouse of a film. So much happens and so much goes on on-screen, it's enjoyably exhausting.
Joe Dante, Robert Zemeckis, Spielberg, and George Lucas... damnnnn... they were good in the 80's
So much creativity flowing from that time period. Now budgets have skyrocketed to the point of where they will clamp down too hard and focus test things to death
GoodBadFlicks Exactly you got the point. By the way nice video and review though, keep it up, i'll follow your Channel ++
it's a god damn masterpiece, love both 1 and 2
I just saw this in a theater the other night and not only was it packed but the audience was totally grateful. Women "aw'd" at Gizmo constantly, people laughed at all the right (and wrong) wrong moments, applause and appreciation in every aspect. So refreshing to see a sequel given the attention it deserves, especially this one!
Rooster Montgomery originally Gizmo was supposed to turn into Spike and be the bad guy but they changed it when they went into production
And what did everyone think when they saw Bugs on the shield? Did they all applaud?
I never understood why people didn't like this film. It was fun and hit every mark a sequel should have.
Incredible movie, I find it more memorable than the original. I thought at first that was due to the fact of it being the first movie my parrents rented for me when I was a kid, but the variety of Gremlin designs is what I think did it for me. I mean those puppets and creature effects are masterful.
This is one of the best sequels ever made. They knew not to take the property seriously but did it such justice.
My favorite was part was when the smart Gremlin shoots the other one, but I can't figure out where he got the gun? Did he kill a security guard or something? That scene was too funny.
Fuck the gun, at least he had time to get that. Where did he get the glasses?!
I have seen Gremlins 2 many times and found it more entertaining as I get older. I watched Dick Tracy once, and oscillating between absolute boredom and total confusion. Additionally, which movie is mentioned more in pop culture as time has gone on?
I love this film! They used to show it on TV all the time. Kinda scary for a kid but all the different scenes, costumes, and tangents made it so entertaining!
The bit I couldn't get over was when Phoebe Cates did a parody of the story of the death of her father from the first film. What were the scriptwriters thinking?
I would kill to see a third Gremlins film.
My idea would be to see the little monsters cause a massive riot throughout Warner Bros studios.
The amount of creativity, homages and cameos would go through the freakin' roof!
This kind of potential should never go to waste.
Well, you're in luck. Zack Galligan has stated that they're making Gremlins 3 and he's reprising his role, more than likely. And YES, they should take over the studio and destroy all the film reels of remakes and reboot/sequels, including the film reel for Gremlins 3 itself, which causes the film to rip AGAIN, and someone comes out complaining that they can't release the movie because the Gremlins fucked it up.
xxoxia
"they should take over the studio and destroy all the film reels of remakes and reboot/sequels, including the film reel for Gremlins 3 itself"
Uh, no. That's not what I had in mind at all.
The concept would be to have the Gremlins wander into different movie sets and cause havoc.
Nothing to do with destroying film reels of remakes and sequels.
Just the Gremlins messing around with all kinds of shit.
If it was just them destroying the reels, that would be lame.
They need to go ALL OUT with the concept!
They did it in Gremlins 2 and they can do it again but bigger and crazier.
You ever been to WB Movieworld on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
You're pretty much describing the Gremlins ride, possibly because the ride is actually at WB Studios AUS.... and it's kind of a 4th wall breaking ride where the Gremlins are pulling apart the ride itself... It's one of those slow on rails rides that takes you through a series of animatronic scenes, but it starts with watching a movie in a small cinema (possibly a history of WB Studios documentary, can't remember) and Gremlins take over the cinema and you're fake evacuated into the ride itself, which is them destroying the studio itself.
Possibly my favourite slow on rails ride I've ever been on. Love it.
I really think Grimlins2 should of been held on a Airbase, tilting to the myth of Grimlins on planes.
"Gremlins 2 was better in every way."
I agree. Also, you forgot to mention how they deliberately broke every rule of making sequels to parody sequels in general.
I dunno. There was already an established pattern for 80’s (and early 90’s) horror sequels to play out like parodies of the original films. Texas Chainsaw 2, Evil Dead 2, Night of the Demons 2, Return of the Living Dead 2, and Gremlins 2. All goofy and parodic versions of the earlier films.
@@calebhernandez681 you really needed to include Freddy & Jason in that list lol - Scream basically satires the whole slasher genre. Tremors 2 & the following Goulies, Critters & Leprechaun movies that are off the fat of Gremlins success.
How is it that something as important as Gizmo is left alone with no one to take care of him responsible after the death of his caretaker? Where is his nephew of the first movie? Why the old man didn't had a communication with Daniel?
The first movie it's better than the second. The problems with the second part was the script. First: There was no concrete developing in the story. It was a crazy fun too cartoony story about funny horrible creatures destroying everything. There were always making too many jokes. The first movie gave me the creeps and made me laugh. Second: If the chinese old man were dyeing, why he didn't search for someone to took care of Gizmo? Billy never missed Gizmo? It was like: "Goodbye Gizmo. I never wanna see you again, but I love you" Third: When Gizmo escaped from the collapsing building he walked in full sunlight without dyeing. Forth: When the bat gremlin was attacking Murray, people walked around him without caring a shit. There is a lot of mistakes, but I prefer the first movie and I would love to watch now a modern Gremlins movie.
You make good points on 2 and 4. But for 3 it's been said on IMDB that when Gizmo was walking around it didn't appear to be direct sunlight like he was in shade or it was overcast. But for point 1 that's the whole point Dante didn't not want to make a movie EXACTLY like the 1st, so he made it a satire on the 1st movie and movies in general. Apparently they're making another movie without Dante involved at all (which I think is a huge mistake) I'm curious what direction they'll take it in. If they'll made it more scary like the first of more comedic like the second one.
+Adrian Matos I agree fully. Throwing everything at the screen does not make a better movie. It's fun ...but I've been working up to watching it again for the last 20 or so years, whenver it came out on VHS. I dunno.
+Adrian Matos the first drives itself nicely, it has this christmassy feel, small town, family with a pinch of fear. The second is a 90s clusterfuck. There's nothing to look forward except more kinds of gremlins. Less is more sometimes.
agu monkey
Yeh, a friend of mine keeps saying Back to the Future 2 is better "because it's got hoverboards!" This is a bit like that. They COULD have upped the ante by expanding on the terror and gore, such as recognising that the best sequence is the mother walking around the house slaughtering gremlins, and then took it from there. Point is, they expanded on the one element that I cared less for; silly mayhem with references. ...All in my opinion of course.
BttF2 went through a similar 'post success build up' but there was a bit of a story. Actually too much. I found the 3 time lines a little overwhelming but I won't blame them for trying to make something out of the first setup, wasn't easy for sure.
Love ya, Cecil! This is a more-praising review than Leonard Maltin's review - a cast member of this very film!
Thanks!
it would be cool if they made a new gremlins 3 with practical and stop motion being used as a gimmick
+Phill Talkington Maybe if Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a hit it will prompt more studios to use practical effects more often. Jurassic World even used some practical effects here and there.
Gremlims 2 is a good movie, don't get me wrong. However it's so far removed from the original I just could never accept it. I appreciate what Dante tried and I respect the balls he had for making such a film. But Gremlins 2 just never worked for me. The gremlin spider was awesome though. That gave me many a nightmare.
I don't know if the same is true in the US, but here in the UK Gremlins 2 became one of those films that TV channels show all the time on bank holiday weekends so it has a pretty solid following whilst barely anyone remembers Dick Tracy even existed.
You know, its funny the way that works. Dick Tracy is mostly forgotten while Gremlins 2 is a cult classic. Well, at least they got theirs in the end.
i love all the cameos and inside jokes.
One of my favorite effects films of all time. I love the puppets and I would have loved to be able to have worked on it.
I actually commented on Gremlins on the Larry King's radio show when the first Gremlins came out. Enjoyed the movie. Also, enjoyed the second one too. Now that Tim Burton has experience directing full length movies, you think he might get a chance to write and direct a third Gremlins. (Gremlins: A New Batch, Gremlins:The Final Show-Down...)
Samuel Hodges if this was 1995 Tim Burton, absolutely. 2014 Tim Burton? No thank you.
I respect your opinion, but I prefer the original Gremlins over the sequel.
hell yez...all time fav
this is one of the greatest movies I watched in my life... also, RIP Christopher Lee, RIP
Gremlins 2 was great! It was more of a showbiz parody (including self-parody) than it was another comic horror tale like the first. The only way not to enjoy it is to miss the point of it, and sadly, a lot of audiences did.
I love this movie and you're so right!!!
thank you!
I always preferred this to the first one; it's like Evil Dead 2, where it's essentially the same concept but just turned up to 11 and taking the piss out of everything including itself.
One of my favorite movies.
This movie is too high class for this channel. One of the funniest films ever made. Those little monsters are an inspiration. Having Lee in the film but not playing Dracula, there is a twist. 5:01 But no (seriously, that is not Daffy. That gremlin is just a loon).
This is the movie equivalent of "throwing the kitchen sink"...and coming up with good results
I saw this when I was little. My grandpa owned a bootleg of "Gremlins" that never worked and the actual vhs of "New Batch." Watched em out of sequence as a result.....but I really have to say I prefer "New Batch" I love both of them but- so much creativity and insanity going on I don't see how hated this is. Lee and Clamp especially.
Especially the stock market scene "BUY SELL BUY SELL BUY SELL". and "Street violence but I believe we can see that for free".
Are those the twins from terminator 2?
Yes.
God I love these movies. Why can't they make movies like these today? Don't get me wrong there are still good movies coming out today, just not quite like this.
I love gremlins 2 over the original especially how crazy it was and the bugs bunny daffy duck part
totally agree! gremlins 1 was good...but 2 was GREAT!!! my all time fav movie!
"Gremlins 2: The New Batch" is the best Gremlins sequel Joe Dante ever did. In the second one Rick Baker's Gremlin and Mogwai effects are 200X twice as better than the first one. I think people should make "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" on Nintendo DS to 3DS games and Nintendo Wii games; they should make Gizmo, Daffy, Lenny George, and Mohawk new movie plush doll puppets as mogwais and gremlins; and make two or three of "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" movie comic books.
I still have my Gizmo sitting on a shelf.
You called the character of "Grandpa Fred" an homage to Grandpa Munster, and the horror hosts. Al Lewis actually was a horror host, as Grandpa for Super Scary Saturday on TBS.
I know this comment is incredibly late, but the spider gremlin transformation scene is a homage to the thing, it even has the sound effect!
