Well, They're cult classics. Halloween is probably his most mainstream accessible movie. The Thing and They Live, while amazing, are largely ignored by mainstream cinema outlets.
Critics may not have respected carpenter but critics are shit. They dont seem to get their job is to direct people to the films theyll personally like.. rather they want to fit into their scene of.. loser idiots. I think most people who saw it realised how brilliant this and the thing are.
man you forgot to mention the most improtant thing about the alley brawl scene: its a metaphor of cognitive dissonance and how its hard to make people SEE they're been lied to.
There's also the important element that there are several people hanging out with the aliens, meant to show that the upper class and colonists use some select subjects to elevate--either to get them to, or because they already do, support the status quo.
@scorenut as well as the working class being hoodwinked into blaming everything *but* the system by the GOP. That’s what’s so great about the film; regardless of your beliefs, it’s a universal experience
I would add that it is also a metaphor of the elites pitting the masses against each other as yet another form of control and manipulation. As it is said in my mother tongue: 'Pueblo contra pueblo'.
I'm not particularly familiar with, shall we say the "oeuvre" of Adam Sandler, but I was aware that he was keen on getting product placement in his films. I was astounded as to just how enthusiastic he was after seeing that Subway scene.
Too bad this film is so underrated; one of Carpenter's greatest films and definitely his most subversive one. It really comes as no surprise to me why this film is rarely aired on TV and isn't as readily available as a lot of crappy films are.
It's anti globalist and liberal communist scummy elites can't stand poor people not obeying. Of course they would hate this movie with a passion. It slaps them right in the face since it's comparing them to aliens. It wasn't the republicans who caused all this mess, but liberals in both parties. They're called rinos when republican, republicans in name only.
I saw this movie once, and only once, back in 1989. I remember thinking it was an OK film, but nothing special. I just watched it again after watching this review and finally realized just how epic this film is. Thanks for posting this. I love rediscovering films.

Same here. When I was a kid, I thought it was ok. Then 5 years ago, I watched it again after many years, and it's now one if my favorite movies. It's a smart film.
Nemo & Wraith - I think COY is making a joke as THEY LIVE is about all the aliens subliminal messages making US (earthlings) being the "consumers". I got the joke.

this movie is awesome. one of the best movies ever made. and for good reason it is a cult classic. the story and message of this movie is still valid for todays world even more than it was back then.
Carpenter is easily one of my favourite, if not sole favourite, movie directors. Guy is brilliant, and anytime I bring up favourite movies ever, there is ALWAYS a Carpenter movie mentioned.
No way, he played the homeless to be the back round characters? Man that was so awesome 🙆. Smart, but so nice and sweet. And that low of a budget?...with a commercial social commentary?...some one tell le when I've praised this thing enough without even seeing it first?
There is no such thing as a "bad" John Carpenter movie. They may be meh/decent at worst, aka Ghosts of Mars, or HEAVILY misunderstood, Escape from LA. Point being there is no flat out groan inducing, eye rolling, John Carpenter movie.
This is one of the greatest movies of all time, and I agree with Piper. It isn't fiction. The 'aliens' may not be from another planet, but certainly from a different ideology.
Honestly, I think part of the reason I like this movie so much is BECAUSE it looks so cheap. It doesn't look like a movie, it looks like reality. For a film about alien invasion, there's no big set pieces or bright lights, and that makes it just seem so much more plausible.
Is that advert inside the tv show real? I am sitting here in disbelief at what I am seeing. How are the actors not cringing to death during that scene????
sadly, that was real. They did a few like that for Bing and...Chevy I think (some car company I don't remember off the top of my head) but the audience started getting sick of it and they backed off
The same thing is happening in games. I don't mind if it makes sense in the scene and isn't out of place or blatant. Sometimes though, they bombard you with it, making it a focal point and it is ridiculous. I just saved the world from giant robots and nuclear war, good thing I have my Doritos and Mountain Dew, I'm exhausted. Speaking of games, it was cool seeing Piper and David in Saints Row 4 kicking alien ass.
Funny...I was to unnerved as a child to watch "They Live" all the way through, so the first time I heard a derivative of that line was in "Dazed and Confused". "I only came here to do two things, kick some ass and drink some beer. Looks like we're almost outta beer."
I absolutely love John Carpenter! Probably my favorite director, a guy who genuinely wants to make a good movie with the resources he has instead of spending $300 million making a toy commercial. 'Halloween', 'Assault on Precinct 13' and 'They Live' all prove a talented guy can make superb films for a few million dollars. Are you going to cover 'Body Bags' at any point? I find it pretty underrated as horror anthologies go and not just because the man himself is introducing the segments.
I came across this movie completely by accident a few years ago. Had no idea about what it was about but figured I'd give it a shot cause of the poster. Almost immediately I knew that it was a piece of magic. Loved every second of it. Surprisingly my dad had also never seen it so sent him a copy. I'm glad he got to see it before he died.

It is quite unbelievable how many amazing movies Carpenter made. My personal favorite is either "The Thing" or "In the Mouth of Madness", can't decide.
+SlippyTube He died in the first movie so he's not really needed. A cool plot would be a resistance who use him like Che Guevara was used. The Nada movement.
I had read awhile back that there was talk of a remake. More of an adaptation of the original story of a guy awaking from a hypnotic trance at a magic show suddenly seeing the aliens all around us.
It is already done in sync with the modern times. A documentary about the zionist Jews. Investigate and wake up. WAKE UP. Read my other comment on here.
Thank you for including the Duke Nukem bubble gum borrow. Again, awesome Exploring video! Twenty years ago you would have had your own television show with this content.
Halloween, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Escape From New York, In the Mouth Of Madness, The Prince of Darkness, Dark Star, The Fog, Village of the Damned, Christine, Ghosts of Mars (I'm prob the only one who actually liked this back when it came out) - this man has done more great films IMHO than any other director, except maybe Nolan or Tarantino. I'm biased, I know, but damn, Carpenter is a guarantee for a thoughtful and cult classic movie. Thnx for the additional insight!
Nostalgia from a time Hogan was the ultimate badass, pro-wrestling was real, and i was thoroughly emotionally invested in every film i saw, piece of crap or no.
I am so glad i walked into dimple records one day and saw the cover of They Live.... The cover alone intrigued me so I bought it!! *this is your god* worth spent!!
They Live is awesome, and another Carpenter triumph. That bit at the end you discussed about ads is so true, and makes this film even more significant.
It was good that Him and Keith David were able to get back together and reprise their roles in SR 4. That was a nice little segment of the game, and showed a lot of heart and dedication in an otherwise-absurd franchise.
I wish I’d heard about this movie earlier in my life, it’s honestly such an incredible commentary on consumerism & humanity. I wondered why the alley fight was even a thing while watching, but the main actor being a wrestler makes a lot of sense. I’d just assumed it was meant to show how humans at their core will always be primal beings that fight, yet will also team up/stick by other humans when needed, in order to contrast humanity to the aliens.
The Bubblegum line was one I heard years before I even saw the film. Its a shame that most of John Carpenter's films are only seen as Cult films nowadays. If I remember, didn't the original short story end with what was the resistance massacre near the end of the film?
No joke, sir. I was watching this video again in the wee hours of August 26th, 2019. Just as you were talking about how "your favorite shows are interrupted," a RUclips ad for Tempurpedic mattresses broke in. It was both surreal and telling.
I just saw this movie yesterday, and it was awesome!!! Gonna see it at least once every year now. It's free on Hulu! Also, November 29th is "Buy Nothing Day"! Let everybody know!
Ah, to discover a classic movie recently now. It's the best, isn't it? I just saw for the very first time Brain Dead(or Dead Alive depending or where you are) about a year ago, before then I never even knew about it but it's a FANTASTIC movie! Fucking LOVED THAT movie! After watching it I wondered how in the hell I never even heard of it, not on TV, not from a friend, and then just happen to come across it on the internet by pure coincidence. Loved it.Awesome, awesome, movie. If you haven't seen it, you really should.
You forgot to mention one thing: *"THEY LIVE IS A DOCUMENTARY!!"* Subscribed for such an excellently researched movie review. i really love people that really know their shit; a phenomenon as rare on the internet as it is in real life. Loved the intro/outro animations too. Hey, could you look into this again? Since this video, there's been the whole Piper tweets controversy, his way untimely death and of course conspiracy speculation between the two. Also, i would love to know who ranks among this movie's fans. It seems right up the alley of George Carlin, Jello Biafra, Bill Hicks, Jesse Ventura, and Otep.
Also, according to Piper, not only did Vince match Piper's pay for They Live, he offered him the WWF title for no less than one year, which would have made him even more money..lots more. He was smart to turn it down.
This movie is amazing. I remember seeing it as a kid and being totally freaked out by the creepy alien faces. As a bonus it even has teleportation mixed in. Beat that "Jumper"!
One of my favorite movies that I remember seeing and being scared of as a child when I seen it late night on cable in the 90s. It always stuck with me but I had forgotten the name. Finally found it in 2008 on RUclips and it's been my favorite since. Great video for a great movie =)
You obviously put a lot of work into your videos and I'm amazed that so many of my favorites, including They Live and and In The Mouth of Madness, have earned your treatment. Kudos sir. Please continue.
They Live is so close to reality most people have no idea....this movie tells so much truth about the dark cabal that run the world it's amazing it was allowed to be shown. Those that know will recognize so much truth and hidden messages in this movie. It's almost a documentary. Carpenter obviously knew so much more than he ever let on... people that think this is 'just a story' that he 'made up' are so mistaken... one of my all time favorite movies..
It is a work of fiction the source material is provided. It is imaginary, somebody made it up. Movies are not real. Neither is the black web, underground, all powerful, population control mafia, sports logo team. " people that think this is 'just a story' that he 'made up' are so mistaken... one of my all time favorite movies.." You contradicted yourself there, perhaps a "Freudian Slip"? Movies by definition are stories, works of fiction, figments of the imagination made manifest. People can be easily fooled by how good a story is or that it fits into something they believe. In Italy, this is for real, there is a balcony, that you can go and visit, that is supposedly the one from "Romeo and Juliet". Thousands of people visit it. That is how gullible people can be.
Oh, "black and white", I get it now. I never got the analogy until you said it. Clever! They Live is a film I loved when I first saw it. It's a completely original concept that you wouldn't see today. Not to mention that they'd probably pump a 100m into the movie and stuff it full of special effects and action.
I was always excited when a Carpenter movie came out. The two Escape films, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, this one. The man made some of the best films of all time. Even his "bad" ones were pretty neat and had some good concepts and characters.
lol there was an episode of american dad where kim kardashian played an alien fluff ball who turns into kim kardashian we know now. so....you predicted the future, and seth mcfarlane owes you money lol
Watching you review about "They Live" and talking about Carpenter making a statement about commercialization, and you talking about having to watch a ad to watch a ad. I got a giggle when I noticed that RUclips has a ad for the movie you are reviewing below the video =)
NO WAY!!!!! I was sure Kanye West would be an alien when the glasses went over his face, Damn!!! :-D Love this movie, one of my personal fave John Carpenter flicks, it deserves so much more recognition than it gets.
They Live is one of my favorite movies, and has been since I was a kid. I remember staying up with my brother to watch it one late Friday night so, so many years ago. As a kid, I loved concept behind the film. The concept of aliens hiding among us to manipulate our society. As I have aged and understand the world better, I now appreciate the message John was sending, and he hit the nail on the head with it.
You called Keith David "David Keith." Also, Saints Row IV has an allusion to this movie by having Rodie Piper and Keith David randomly fight at one point.
I finally watched this movie in it's entirety thanks to you, I've never gotten past the 20 minute mark before, something about it just never got me attached enough. But after seeing this posted I decided to watch the movie first. So thanks, and after hearing about the budgetary and time constraints on the film, its incredibly impressive that it turned out as well as it did.
There is a kind of cynicism which comes with familiarity. I think maybe looking at this film in the context of its time might reveal how the "critics" misunderstood it. Back then, I thought the film was cheesey and not very special. I didn't understand why the man who made Halloween and The Thing was departing from his usual fare. A few years gone bye, and I now fully agree that it is an excellent film. It still isn't one I rewatch, but maybe it should be. Maybe I should pop it in my queue right after The Thing to experience it with the benefit of older and wiser eyes. After all, nowadays Hollywood isn't making much of anything I care about ... excluding Disney and WB.
Im surprised that this film isn't better known. I always confused it with "dead alive" until I watched your review. I ran out and got a copy immediately and had my mind blown. thank you for reviewing such forgotten classics.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees modern commercialism is worse than what was going on in the 80s. Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of commercialism back then, but some people talk like that was 80s-specific(commercialism and materialism). They tend to judge that decade by it's vices, when those vices really haven't disappeared(and were probably dialed up significantly in the current time).
Kim Kardashian? I fucking knew it!! It all makes so much sense now. How did the beloved Rowdy Roddy Piper put it? "That's like pouring perfume on a pig..."
couldnt have said it better myself...from 9:25 to 9:40 he hits the nail spot on, (empty headed talentless socialites)....thats what we have now these days
One example why this movie is still good till this day: I have seen it more than 10 times and first watched it 20 years ago. My girfriend has never seen it. So we've changed that a couple of weeks ago. She stated, that she really loved this movie and felt, that it is so recent with its themes, that it could be easily released today and the story would still hold up without any changes. This movie was way ahead of it's time while also being spot on with it's themes when it was released. What a classic!
Don't know how I missed this review. Great job. I could tell how genuinely disdained at modern Hollywood you were at the end. I always suspected Kim Kardashian was an alien. Thank you for confirming this fact. And all this time they said I was crazy...
poontang3zizo Thanks! I'm just tired with how out of touch hollywood continues to be. Production costs keep going up while quality keeps going down. Most movies you forget about before you even leave the theater. Oh and the whole KK family is aliens. lol :)
hes famous for his music not his money ,i would recommend his first 3 albums he adresses a lot of social issues such as consumerism in his song .heard em say .etc
This movie is tied for first in my Top 5 John Carpenter movies with Big Trouble in Little China, with second place also being a tie between The Thing and Vampires. I agree with your assessment at the end of the review, and it seems even more fitting 5 years later. Especially since not only did I have to suffer through two adds before the video, but two break-ins during the video for a total of six ads. Oh, the irony.
Awesome movie and another Carpenter classic!
R.I.P Roddy Piper.
He needs a memorial in Frogtown.
He was perfect for this role.
Should have been WWF Champion
That’s “Rowdy Roddy Piper” to you.
Between this and The Thing, it's crazy how Carpenter got no respect at the time for movies that have gone on to be considered classics.
Sadly yes, it seemed so many of his movies weren't appreciated until well after the fact.
Big trouble in little china is a classic

The new Emoji movie was nothing but an expensive commercial for Smartphones and apps. I can only imagine John Carpenter's thoughts on the matter.
It just occurred to me that The Fly II was how I discovered your channel. I maintain to this day that it's one of the most fun movies I've watched.
"I love No Holds Barred like I love Troll 2." 😂😂😂😂😂
Exactly. Strong and black.
...wait a minute. That's coffee.
Love this movie. Got a chance to meet Piper and he signed my copy of THEY LIVE!
Thank-you Cecil for articulating what I have always liked about this movie. It deserves much more attention than it got!
Yes cause when the commie jerks run the state la Chicago my it turns to shit crapenter is a hypocrite he also selling out fir money he’s full of shit
They live is one of my favorite films of all time :)
They Live is awesome, and another Carpenter triumph. That bit at the end you discussed about ads is so true, and makes this film even more significant.
RIP PIPER. The pipes the pipes are calling...
He died??? :(
Yup July 31, 2015
When you said the line "your favorite shows are interrupted..." an ad literally popped up at that exact moment.
I knew you would mention the south park parody.
Excellent.
I've always loved They Live!
I love this movie ... It opened our eyes on how we look at the world... Brilliant execution of the story with fantastic meaning behind it
The Bubblegum line was one I heard years before I even saw the film.
The backalley fight was so good. I'm still waiting for it to end.
Absolute Classic!
John Carpenter is amazing!
Great analysis. "You have to watch a commercial to watch a commercial." A very unique movie that engages all the people that I watch it with.
You forgot to mention one thing:
*"THEY LIVE IS A DOCUMENTARY!!"*
Subscribed for such an excellently researched movie review. i really love people that really know their shit; a phenomenon as rare on the internet as it is in real life.
All very interesting names you threw out...I dig
The moment you talked about having to watch ads during shows on tour phones, the ad popped up. Gold.
RIP Rowdy Roddy Piper
THANK YOU. This video and They Live need to be a whole unit in cinematography classes everywhere.
Thanks!
" people that think this is 'just a story' that he 'made up' are so mistaken... one of my all time favorite movies.."
You contradicted yourself there, perhaps a "Freudian Slip"?
Meg Foster had probably the most sexy eyes out of any actress.
I have always been into big beautiful brown eyes, but I will admit her eyes are a beautiful shade of blue that’s rare
but she looks like a trans
Ice queen. Sexy and intimidating.
I was always excited when a Carpenter movie came out. The two Escape films, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, this one. The man made some of the best films of all time. Even his "bad" ones were pretty neat and had some good concepts and characters.
Nice editing in this, Kim being an alien and Kanye not being one is spot on!
Seth Greschuk hehehe, thanks! I had fun with that one, I should make it into a shirt
I wouldn't mind that, hilarious idea
lol there was an episode of american dad where kim kardashian played an alien fluff ball who turns into kim kardashian we know now. so....you predicted the future, and seth mcfarlane owes you money lol
Seth Greschuk That ass is out of this world. luv kim
Watching you review about "They Live" and talking about Carpenter making a statement about commercialization, and you talking about having to watch a ad to watch a ad. I got a giggle when I noticed that RUclips has a ad for the movie you are reviewing below the video =)
Love this movie. Saw it in the theater when I was a kid. Also, LOVE this channel.
Thank you!
Such a good movie and really one of the underrated ones that Carpenter did. If you haven't seen it already it's a must.
NO WAY!!!!! I was sure Kanye West would be an alien when the glasses went over his face, Damn!!! :-D Love this movie, one of my personal fave John Carpenter flicks, it deserves so much more recognition than it gets.
Kanye isn’t an alien, he’s going to be a president though.
@@slaytanic921 LOL yeah, in his dreams
As usual, great overlook, and definitely another Carpenter classic. Great film!
I was waiting for you, as a metal fan, to mention that Napalm Death used samples from this movie on their 1992 LP "Utopia Banished" :D
So did Schloss Tegal (on their "Human Resource Exploitation" CD)
80ies films were so samplable :)
You called Keith David "David Keith."
Also, Saints Row IV has an allusion to this movie by having Rodie Piper and Keith David randomly fight at one point.
You called Roddy Piper "Rodie Piper."
Also, that Saints Row IV homage was brilliant.
That guy for the Subway commercial has far surpassed hotdog neck. He's moved up to pillow neck.
love that the ad in this video pops up just as he is talking about all the ads in tv shows
Keith David is a legend too!
Best series of film reviews on RUclips by a loooooonngg shot!!! Absolutely love these, thanks fella!!!
Carpenter is legend!!!
Absolute classic, had the pleasure of seeing John Carpenter's live Retrospective last week and the theme from They Live got one of the best responses.
THEY LIVE IS ONE OF THE BEST FILM EVER MADE OF
JOHN CARPENTER I PERSONALLY LOVE IT NEED TO WAKE OF THIS MIND CONTROL IT IS GETTING
WORSE
Oh god do you seriously think this movie is real?
@@AnAverageGoblin What you think now, mask-slave?
@@rabbitcreative Get therapy.
A youtube commercial popped up in the middle of the reviewer complaining about how commercials pop up in the middle of what you're watching.
Frank Bautista I think it was in its early stages back then and is a full on beast now. Its next to impossible to avoid today.
This is one of the greatest movies of all time. Love it love it love it just bought it on Blu-ray the other day
Kim Kardashian? I fucking knew it!! It all makes so much sense now. How did the beloved Rowdy Roddy Piper put it?
"That's like pouring perfume on a pig..."
Tyler Kemp :)
Tyler Kemp "You, you're ok. This one, really fuckin' ugly!"
couldnt have said it better myself...from 9:25 to 9:40 he hits the nail spot on, (empty headed talentless socialites)....thats what we have now these days
For another Roddy Piper flick check out Hell Comes to Frogtown.
Even though you are not a filmmaker, but when I watch your videos, you inspire me to become a filmmaker. I don't know why. So...Thanks.
Oh and the whole KK family is aliens. lol :)
one of my top all time favorite movies. I watched it so many times growing up and still watch to this day from time to time.
Wait, Kayne isn't an alien?
nah, he can actually do things. Or could, if you dont like his newer stuff :p
hes famous for his music not his money ,i would recommend his first 3 albums he adresses a lot of social issues such as consumerism in his song .heard em say .etc
Calisha H haven't liked any of his stuff since graduation
Not at first. He’s a conversion.
Just a bell end.
They live is as powerful today as it was then, more so.
They Live was one of the first VHS movies I ever bought. Now I have it on DVD
