He wasn't even killed off in the sequel, in which he actually would have died, if the director would have stuck to the source material... I found that very impressive. ;)
to this day, I use this fact as a neat trivia when discussing Sean Bean's "always dies" career, jokingly ending it with "you had one job, Silent Hill!"
I've heard so many people pan this movie, and the majority never played the game... Even without playing the game, I thought they did a pretty Amazing job with this movie. Glad to hear someone pointing out how good this film truly is!
NOT having played the game helps a lot, since you don't know that the game was about father/daughter relationship, plus already had a strong woman in there
You missed what he said. He liles the movie. The movie isn't actually that good but he likes it a lot. Your like of a movie doesn't make it good, it just means you like it.
Me and my wife went to see Silent Hill when it came out, I was expecting to be disappointed, but it blew my expectations. the best videogame adapt ever imo.
This is by FAR my favorite video game to film adaptation. It is criminally criminally underrated and unappreciated. Thank you so much for doing this in depth video!
This movie is one of those horror movies that executes gore properly. Not too overdone, not too violently action-packed and with really and intensely scary build up
Otkusi Sebe Chlen, I know. I just meant because whenever someone mentions the movie, they automatically go on to have a five minute rant about how horrible it is. It's very tiring. People can say the sequel is terrible though. The first one AT LEAST tried! The sequel just was begging to get hate.
I have been waiting a long time to see someone defend this movie (and others, Pandorum, Event Horizon, et al). It has become far too easy for others to hop on the hate train than it is for the few who appreciate these little gems to defend their opinions. Being an avid gamer and fan of the Silent Hill series as well as a being a bit of a cinephile I have to say this movie is one of the best, if not the best spiritual translations of the original work to screen. Is it flawed? Yes. Is it an exact translation? No. But it does capture the mood, the atmosphere and the essence of everything I loved about playing these games. Christophe Gans deserves far more credit and appreciation for his acheivement.
It’s hated by mainstream audiences as it sort of requires you to have played the games to fully understand what’s going on. It’s also a very slow paced movie, and audiences didn’t appreciate the filming style, the atmosphere, the creature design or soundtrack. This is an example of s videogame movie done right. It was made for fans first, mainstream audiences last, and it smashes it out of the park. The fact it’s classed as Rotten on RT disgusts me as it’s far from bad and is the best videogame movie of all time.
@@grantzeebroek3658 I've never played any of the Silent Hill games (sadly, because I find the concept VERY interesting)... and understood the movie perfectly. Although I missed the specific significance of each monster (which this video gave me).
"I literally have everybody else around me that doesn't see Silent Hill the way I do." That's actually perfect in a way because that's exactly what Silent Hill does to the people who enter it haha
The only thing i disagree with is that Pyramid Head only represents rape. Which while it is part of his symbolization in Silent Hill 2, its not entirely what he represents in both the game and the film. In Silent Hill 2 Pyramid Head was James representation of his need to be punished for killing his wife. This is evident by Pyramid Head constantly killing Maria, and James lines before the final fight with him. In the first movie though, he was really only there because he's the most iconic creature of the Silent Hill series and kind of became it's mascot. Revelations was a little deeper with him sort of being like a protector and executioner for Alessa. Just the thing im trying to say here is that Pyramid Head represents a lot more than just being a rape monster.
If they ever did a 3rd Silent Hill with Sean Bean as the main protagonist they could find a way to tie Pyramid Head to that character. Kinda like doing the games out of order: the first movie is the first game, the second movie is the third game, the third movie could be the second game. Would be interesting if when they adopted Sharron, Sean Bean's character did something not yet revealed to bring Pyramid Head into being. But this is all wishful thinking and the way Konami is going....
Pyramid Head served several roles. James was tortured by his guilt for wanting to have sex and romance while his wife wasted away--Pyramid Head was the manifestation of that guilt and the Id that would take such relations even though he "wasn't allowed"; PH "penetrated" Maria repeatedly, and the first fucking thing you see him doing is pretty unambiguously raping one of the double-leg monsters that represent James' sexual frustration. It's OK, artistically (and accurate), to regard PH as a rape monster and then some.
Oh fuck, that seems even darker and more horrifying than ever. That means that PH was in many cases James' Id, guiding him to base survival through Silent Hill even if his methods are...disturbing, to say the least. It's acting out his darker fantasies and still serving the function of impetus to ensure James drives on through the ordeal. Yuck.
I know what you mean, he does represent rape on a level, but that's far from it, more a general representative of James's shadow side, in Jungian terms. But I will say that pyramid head doesn't really make sense outside silent hill 2, he's very specific to james
While I agree that Pyramid head works mostly only with James, there is a Silent Hill comic saying that Pyramid head is actually the protector of the town and it's executioner. Not sure if I am personally buying but it is something to look into.
This is such a spot on video! I saw this movie when it came out and the moment I heard the opening of the video game accompanying the studio's logo; I knew this was going to be awesome! Then the "SILENT HILL!!!" thing happened but luckily it seemed like a speed bump more than anything. I hope that in time that someone high up recognizes the genius behind the adaptation of this film and acknowledges them with the respect and gratitude that you've shown in this video! Thanks for all the hard work!
It is a very stylized & well crafted movie. All the lead characters are females which is refreshing to see & added to its attraction. Jodelle Ferland did a great job as dark Alessa & Radha Mitchell was also perfect for the role.
"All the lead characters are females which is refreshing to see & added to its attraction" I disagree. I very much dislike that they switched out Harry for a female, as if men are incapable of being vulnerable, incapable of feeling afraid and as if a fathers love for his daughter is being less important and less impactful than that of a mother.
RUclips's algorithm recently threw this video at me based on my interests, and I'm glad. I really enjoyed this, and completely agree with the points made. I was unaware of everything that went down to make this movie even possible, and in light of it all, it now makes even more sense why a Silent Hill fan like myself enjoyed it so much. Makes me sad all over again that Silent Hills (Kojima/del Toro) was scrapped.
I absolutely adore this film. People say there aren't any good video game films, this is a *great* film that stays true to it's source material. And Sean Bean survives, I take that as a cliffhanger...
Well it doesnt stay completely true but oit is definitely the closest out of all videogame-movies. I absolutely loved it. The sequel is TERRIBLE though.
"Stays true to its source material"... Yeah I remember when female Harry Mason goes to a dark alley and gets fondled by disfigured kids and meets Pyramid Head, after doing something else that also wasn't related to the original.
No it's not. The straitjacket/lying figure monster and Pyramid head are both created by Jame's mind over his guilt for having trangled his wife with a pillow, they have nothing to do with the Masson Familly at all.
It is so refreshing that someone decided to make a big love note to this movie. I adore the games and I adore the movie. You also put in some great perspectives that I hadn't even noticed! Bravo.
As muddled of a film as it is.. Silent Hill is hands down the most faithful video to game to film adaptation ever made. Some of the sequences and characters (Pyramid head, the darkness, the nuns..) were unbelievably recaptured. There’s something frustratingly beautiful about this movie.
Thank you SO much for this video. I always liked this movie but never knew much about it or the game series. Your "Exploring" series is one of my favorite things on RUclips, period.
I can't remember the last time I agreed harder with a video about a movie. Saw this in a theater when it was released and have been defending it ever since. QuickTime event outro spot on as well. Liked, subbed.
My only contention has always been that they replaced Harry and the reason why they replaced him: "It quickly became clear however Harry never acted like a masculine character. He was constantly dizzy, fainting, talking to himself, screaming and in fact was very vulnerable. We didn't want to betray the nature of the game by changing the character's feelings and motivations, so we felt it was better to change to a female protagonist and retain all those important qualities. I don't want people to think that I have been "politically correct" because we changed Harry into Rose. There is no political correctness in Silent Hill." Apparently only a woman can be vulnerable and acting in a desperate need to find their child.
@@monkeykidd420 uh. Well, that's just depressive. No, mothers don't unless that's how it's been conditioned from birth. If mom is the only one who feeds and gives skin contact, then yes
@@Rage_Harder_Then_Relax They can if you stimulate their nipples enough. All jokes aside, that's why we have formula today. Or pumping. Hardly relevant anyway, considering the daughter's age...
Shut the video off and watched the film upon your recommendation and loved it! I love a film that slowly unwraps itself and yet still leaves certain aspects ambiguous. The Sean Bean subplot didn't bother me or slow the pacing and seeing his struggle for answers was cool but wasn't really needed and could be taken out. This movies atmosphere and overall tone creates and captures these realities perfectly and when you finally get some kind of answer it feels worth it and never a build up to nothing! Great video! Thank you for recommending such an amazing film!
Awesome, glad you liked it! If you can, check the movie out on Bluray. The environments look stunning. Some of the best production I've seen in a while. It really goes to show how much a good practical budget can blow away CG.
Nice to see someone championing this film. I think it's so underrated (wow, o know, I'm actually using that word correctly!) Not just as a video game movie, but horror movie as well. Hell, just an all round underrated film that I love. Also nice to hear someone acknowledge and say how film adaptations have to change and do different from source materials (great examples by the way) it's annoying that video game fans don't seem to get this, there has to be changes, especially going from an interactive medium to a passive one Also cold and snowy well into April... didn't realise Silent Hill was set in the UK...
OMG finally someone who gets it! No seriously, the number of reviewers, self-proclaimed lovers of the Silent Hill series, people I usually really like and respect that gave this movie horrendous reviews because it wasn't perfectly *identical* to the game series is too numerous to count. Fans of the games who clearly had a bias against it from the start or people who clearly did not pay attention enough or simply didn't "get" it... Most common misunderstood elements of the movie: *- "Why is Rose taking Sharon to toxic fumes Silent Hill in the middle of the night? That's stupid!"* She wasn't... She was heading for Brahms, the next town (you see a road sign for it early in the scene, it's not there by coincidence), and would've more than likely taken Sharon to the Silent Hill the next day, but Cybil showing up forced her to change her plans. With the cop chasing her she probably figured her husband had called in a kidnapping and instead of giving up and be arrested right there and then and never getting any answers, she made a last ditch effort to get to the town. She couldn't have guessed Silent Hill was Hell town. *- "Why are the monsters and Pyramid Head trying to kill Rose if Alessa wants a new mother? That's stupid!"* Did you not notice whenever the monsters got the upper hand - the children overwhelming Rose, PH nearly breaking down the door to get to her, etc - they suddenly stop and disapear? They were testing Rose's resolve to save her daughter. Rose, after these seemingly near death experiences, could've just broke mentally or given up, but she endures. Alessa's biological mother, Dahlia, was a coward with no backbone that did not stood up for her daughter against the cult and instead let them burn her to a crisp. She would not suffer another weak mother. See? There's a little bit more going on than the whole lot of nothing some people claim. *- "Being born out of wedlock hardly qualifies as 'witch' material. Such a weak excuse versus the awesome game counterpart!"* Can you not use your imagination for a damn second? Dahlia would or could not name the father. Why is that? If naming a father could clear her daughter from suspicion then why doesn't she? Maybe because there isn't one, that the conception was immaculate, you know, like a certain biblical figure... I think this would be consider highly blashemous within an extremely rigid, trigger-hapy cult don't you think? No, Alessa wasn't used to birth an evil god, but the new twist on the story brings up a ton of new implications that are posssibly much deeper than the games. Without going into Christianity necessarily, the first appearence of Dark Alessa at the hospital coud very well be a demon or an evil entity there to corrupt what remains of what should've been a force for good, had it been allowed to mature in a nurturing environment. It certainly is more interesting to look at it this way rather than insisting on it simply being about birth out of wedlock, not seeing anything else implied there, and crying about it... The movie shouldn't have to explain *everything*. *- "Pyramid Head was punishing James for his sins in the game. What does he represent here?? He has no point!."* You can easily interprete PH representing Alessa's burning (literally) vengeance. He is an executioner, hunting down cultists in the hellish otherworld and punishing them for what they did. I thought it was kinda obvious really... *- "There was no reason for the red nurse or the sexy nurses to be there! Much like PH, they are glorified cameos!"* Sure, they are elements that have been made popular in later games that were included for recognition, but much like PH, they are still given a purpose. Older burnt and bedridden Alessa knows she will never look pretty or sexy to herself or to anyone and so she resents the nurses she is in the care of for their beauty, she resents the look of fear they have in their pretty face when they look at her. Older Alessa being just boiling rage at this point and long past being kind has no issue tormenting and torturing them in hellish Silent Hill... She punishes the red nurse by gouging her eyes out and she punishes the others by disfiguring them, effectively turning them into a twisted version of "butherface". Again, it's something that needs a little bit of observation and brain matter to put together. But of course, if your mindset is the games = perfection and any adaptation = utter crap that could never live up to the source material, I'm sure you'll find every reasons to hate this movie. The same way the Ghost in the Shell liveaction was wildly panned by fans, even though it's the best adaptation of an anime to date... And how many Tolkien purists absolutely hate Peter Jackson's adaptation of the LotR novels. I find it so baffling sometimes. But enough ranting... PS: Silent Hill Revelation, now *THAT'S* a bad movie...
@Zayne simard moore Well, the ironic thing is that the second movie is the result of the producers listening to the complaints about the 1st movie not being enough like the game (because remember game = perfection) and so they fudged up what should have been an original storyline for the sequel to make a re-hash of the 3rd game instead, but with none of the care, passion, production quality, smart writing, etc. of the 1st one. That's why we got an absolute trainwreck of a movie as a sequel. Oh and, JUMP SCARES, because getting startled is truly the scariest sh*t ever... Oh boy. Love or hate the first movie, at least Christophe Gans, the director, genuinely loved the game series and it showed, but he still wanted to make this adaptation his own, and I was perfectly alright with that. When you try to make a carbon copy of a game, you get Silent Hill Relevation...
The people in this thread who like the movie have to mock and demonize the people who don't, and that reflects very, very poorly on them. I do not like the film, and it has nothing to do with wanting the film to be identical to the game. I want to preserve the spirit, the subtlety and the psychology of the series, and on top of that just be a good movie overall. I do not think the first Silent Hill film accomplishes any of these things. In your long comment here you make a lot of leaps in logic in order to defend inconsistencies, but many of your points are just inferences and not actually supported by the film. You want it to be more intelligent than it is, so you make up connections where there are none (the sexy nurses defense in particular is, frankly, laughable) and then passive-aggressively berate other people for not seeing those non-existent connections. I would have been nicer, by the way, if you hadn't felt the need to insult everyone who has a different opinion than you. But you did, so I didn't feel like being kind in turn. And also, there's nothing wrong with enjoying the film. I don't think it's irredeemably terrible. Different opinions are fine, but if you think the people who hate this movie are being condescending elitists, then be jerks to THOSE PEOPLE, don't just insult everyone who doesn't like the movie. You're acting just as bad as them.
@@Wveth Oh boohoo, cry me a flippin' river... I never insulted people who simply don't like the movie, but I do take issue with the ones that hate it only because it's not a carbon copy of the game or because they have widly misundertstood it, and clearly I've hit a nerve with you. And you don't think that's most people?? Again, the original plans for the 2nd movie had to be scrapped to give us Revelation instead because fans bitched and moaned how the first movie wasn't enough like the game. What a great success that turned out to be... Yeah, some things *need* to be infered, because the movie doesn't spoon-feed you every bit of information, but it leaves enough clues to let you figure it out. That you choose to see things strictly at face value is your perogative, that doesn't make my "leaps in logic" (lol) any less valid. I hate using the expression "you just don't get it", but saddly sometimes people really don't, to the detriment of the movie, and it's only decades later that some movies get the recognition they deserves.
13:00 My fucking jaw dropped :O I already was aware of the effort into the cinematography and practical effects in the movie, but this just solidifies that. But it also makes me more sad and disappointed at how critics and audiences overlooked this movie, giving it low ratings and bypassing it as just another "B" horror movie. I will forever cherish this movie.
The last game in the series didn't do much. Sure there was a lot of hype for this one, but that hype doesn't always translate into sales. It's easy to get on the f konami band wagon but we really have no idea if from a business perspective it was a good or bad decision.
Jinjo Ito was supposed to be involved, how could that not have been a good decissions? Gosh, I wish I could travel to an alternate reality where the game was made
To be frank your interpretation of Pyramid head is lacking. He is supposed to represent internalized guilt and the heavy burden of carrying that guilt. Hence why he has a heavy sword that he has to drag as well as the headpiece that keeps his head pulled down. He is also the reimagined form of an executioner from the second game. This is most notable in the movie where Anna (I think that was her name) has her entire flesh ripped from her body. this is a saying from the bible that states that every sin shall cost a piece of one flesh. This is why I actually like his presence in this movie. He actually has a purpose here and isn't just being injected in solely for fan service.
Silent Hill was one of my funniest experiences growing up. I was so obsessed with it I watched the movie Jacob's Ladder. Give it a watch for your next Exploring video. Keep up the good work and thank you!
That's good to hear, I remember making someone who knew nothing of the game go watch it, and the next day he said he watched it with his gf and they both hated it, they were like WTF. LOL
Glad to hear this take on a solid movie and franchise. The practical effects still look great and you can see the effort that went into this. I love Silent Hill and other Survival Horror games. Part of it is figuring things out for myself and getting to the end in one piece.
Excellent review. I've been a horror movie enthusiast for almost 4 decades and have seen tons of it but Silent Hill manages to carve its own niche. One of my all time favorite.
This is, by far,the best critique of the movie and not by those movie critics who think that it was terrible because they complain about other things which only made them appear to be ignorant and stupid.
This is perfect. You said everything i've ever thought and it genuinely frustrates me when people criticise this film without understanding anything about it.
GoodBadFlicks Honestly man, you know your stuff, your other videos are great, keep doing what you're doing and thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment
Although I really liked the fiklm, I would have hoped you would acknowneldge some of its defects...like the exposition fest right before the climax: was it so hard to explicitate the revelations by smaller chunks over the course of the film? Also, some of the violence is very over the top, and a bit silly. But true, saying the movie isn't faithful because the characters are not the same, while the spirit of the game is perfectly translated is superficial and dumb!
Silent hill is a terrific film, the best video game adaptation and one that doesn't try to exploit its origins. It's sad that critics and audience didn't like it.
Just stumbled upon this video. This was a wonderful review and so happy to see someone else that liked this movie adaptation. I feel like everyone hears video game movie adaptation and immediately think it'll be bad and not give it a chance. Did a great job explaining the comparisons between the two.
Ok... we must have grown up as childhood playmates in another dimension, because you nailed this on the rusty head! I can be quite long-winded in agreement, but you said it all. Devoted director, qualified writer, correct cast, and timeless visuals / environment. This movie is truly made for both fans and serious contemplative story enthusiasts who allow themselves to be taken away into ponderance. Dude, I owe you a drink! Well done!
I'm stunned. I'm a HUGE fan of Silent Hill and am normally very easy to please with movies... and I never thought I would change my mind about the Silent Hill movie until now. Hats off to you sir, you've turned garbage into gold for me.
The part where Pyramid Head rips ol' girl's skin off was fucking hilarious. The reaction in the theater was mixed - half of us were cheering and hollering, the other half was flipping the fuck out lol
The movie turns 15 today! My first introduction to Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Alice Kriege, and Jodelle Ferland. Truly one of my favorite video game adaptations despite so many changes they made. The visuals are absolutely amazing nailing down the atmosphere of the haunted town, they get the camera angles, the gore is plentiful. They used a lot of the music from the games by Akira Yamouka. Director Christopher Gans manages to bring the style and appearance to life. Plus there is the feeling of isolation and dread. Although it does suffer from inane dialogue, silly plotting, and the essence of the source material is somewhat lost in the shuffle. Sean Bean's scenes are so jarring and slow things down they could've been cut out completely. At its core though it is a story about maternal love and adoption trauma. The movie cremates the conventional adoption narrative in cinema, drawing the nightmarescape of not only forming a bond with an adopted child, but sustaining it, and what that attempt to sustain it says about the adoptive parent. Mother is god in the eyes of a child but adoptees know religion is an opiate or a way to treat emotional pain.
You're so good at comparing the "bad" film to the source material in ways that aren't super obvious, or spoonfed, as you said. You did the same thing for the Super Mario live action movie. So impressed as always!
Frankly I loved this film. From the moment I saw it I fell in love with it, enjoyed the second one too but it was missing something from the first one. Perhaps the heart and the great story telling. It always pisses me off when someone says the film is stupid because I thought it was extremely intelligent and well written.
I thought that Pyramid Head in the context of the movie was a stand in for a father. Like the idea of the one she never had, punishing those who wronged her.
Thanks! I'm actually trying to do more of these but they take longer than the normal episodes. (more research and such) In case you missed them, I did an "Exploring" video for Reindeer Games, Chernobyl Diaries, Gremlins 2, They Live, Halloween 3, and The Blair Witch 2, which I consider to be my best work.
You don't know how much I loved and obsessed this movie. It took me almost a year to actually move on from how good this movie was. It's 2017 now and I stumbled upon this, and now, now I think I won't be moving on from it. Thank you though, you brought back something that I've loved and forgotten (because I have a poor memory) for a really long time. 10/10. Also, I haven't played the game, but if I did, I might just be cosplaying one of those nurses until I die. Because you know, this movie is the bomb. However, the sequel was a really MEH thing (especially since they didn't hire Jodelle Ferland as Alessa again, but then again, Jodelle's acting is too pure for such a horrendous movie, plus they made Pyramid head a good guy.).
This is still my favorite "horror" movie. I love how you don't know what the hell is going on until the reveal toward the end. It's just creepy the whole time-- new horror movies don't unravel like this because audiences are dumbed down nowadays and are impatient.
"...But now is the end of days and I... am... the reaper." I love this movie and that monologue is so awesome. Still the best video game adaptation, in my opinion.
As a huge fan of the series, I followed along with Christophe Gans and the films' production at the time and I could tell from his dedication that it was going to be a great game adaptation. His absence from the second film off the bat really put everyone on edge that the sequel would suck...and it did.
Wicked ass video homie!! You did a damn good job on this one. You got my like!! Your commentary is absolutely great and on point! Keep up the great work!!
Being a massive fan of the games I was VERY happy with this movie (and its sequel). A video game movie adaptation doesn't have to be perfect in every single way for it to be succesful (like a lot of people think they must). In my opinion, such a movie needs to be atmospheric, entertaining and (somewhat) true to the source-material. And Silent Hill has all of that =)
I thought they perfectly captured the essence of Silent Hill. A complete retelling of the original game wasn't needed and probably would have been nitpicked even more.
I liked the sequel. It was flawed and nowhere near as good as the first but I still enjoyed it. I'd like to do an episode about it but can't find much info on it. Maybe in the future.
HUGE Resident Evil fan here.. Never played one second of a Silent Hill game. I have no idea how that happened as it has always looked really interesting to me.
The sequel happened because the studio thought the original was too complicated and made them simplify it. I thought it had some good production design and they were trying to emulate part 3 of the game series but ultimately, it was undone by meddling. I don't think its terrible but it was a steep drop off from the original.
GoodBadFlicks it was also made by a different director, and it was the new directors first attempt at 3D. On top of that, switching characters around and not understanding the lore behind the franchise added to the terrible movie it became.
Nice to see a positive review of this. I'm not clued up on the game as I never actually played it properly. But I really enjoyed the movie. I also enjoyed your review which helped me better understand how it compared to the game franchise. I appreciate the movie even more now...
The part where rose is in the bathroom with the janitor was filmed in my home town of st.thomas. there was an abandoned college known as Alma College. It has since been burned to the ground by people I actually went to highschool with.
The only thing that annoyed me was the use of Pyramid Head. The character represented James Sunderland's sexual frustration and *spoiler alert for those who haven't played SH2 which you owe yourself to play* punishment for the murder of his wife at his hands. He really doesn't belong to any of the games or movies outside of SH2.
PH also referenced James' sexual frustrations, if I remember correctly, here he can represent Alessa's rape because of his sheer size and power, referencing the size and power difference between Alessa and the janitor. As fans of the SH series, we should be open minded and good at linking what this thing means to that thing in games and movies. But, now I see that PH in SH: Revelations seems a bit blunt (Bad pun), maybe he turned into a protector of Alessa/Sherry, and what she represents, as I took to my head-canon for years, But damn, he's good in that movie. OF which, for me, only had a problem, that romantic pair for Sherry, he was completely useless.
The way I justified it in the film canon, was that he was there representing Christabella's crushing guilt about her treatment of Alessa. Unlike the cultists who blindly trusted Christabella, she knew exactly what went down and why it was wrong. The giant helmet could represent her instense denial of her true nature. I read someone else say that they think "The Fiend" as he's called by the cultists, goes further and represents all of the cultists secret doubts and feelings of guilt.
This, Pyramid Head doesn't represent 'rape'. And also nurses are about James' sexual guilt. These two makes the monsters in this movie out of context with a female main character.
God, I love this film so much, thank you GoodBadFlicks for giving Silent Hill a great review and retrospective. I'm also a massive fan of the games and have played the main first four. I would've loved to have played the other games in the franchise. Again, thanks very much GoodBadFlicks.
That movie scared the crap out of me , I called the nurses “saucy fosse nurses” because commercials for fosse on broadway were on tv a lot and it allowed me to laugh at the movie. Cool to know they were actually dancers.
When you put that photo of Uwe Boll up there I physically flinched. How dare you put that image up there - I hope youtube demonitizes this video for it's use of these disturbing images.
I am a big fan of the games and this movie is one of my favourite horror flicks. The scenery, the atmosphere, the music and the monsters can not be achieved any better than this. It is clear that SH was a passion project for the director and he put so much effort on it. Such an underrated gem.
What makes this film even more memorable is that it's one of the very few that DOESN'T kill off Sean Bean XD
Doesn't he die in a dream sequence though?
Nope! In fact, he is in the sequel...which is a whole other beast....
He wasn't even killed off in the sequel, in which he actually would have died, if the director would have stuck to the source material... I found that very impressive. ;)
They should've kept Gans as director for the second movie as well. The second one was just awful.
to this day, I use this fact as a neat trivia when discussing Sean Bean's "always dies" career, jokingly ending it with "you had one job, Silent Hill!"
I agree it was a good film. As for the ending: When I saw it in the theater I whispered, "She didn't get the good ending." I loved it.
+Scix ROFL!
+Scix At least she didn't get the dog in the control room ending =P
I was hoping the DVD would have that!
Sorry I thought the ending was confusing and dumb. While not all movies need clear ending this on did.
+blackrazer22 Have you ever played the games? Having at least one strange, depressing ending is standard procedure.
Me and my wife went to see Silent Hill when it came out, I was expecting to be disappointed, but it blew my expectations. the best videogame adapt ever imo.
Each to their own bud
really great set design & ambiance, i was impressed too!
This is by FAR my favorite video game to film adaptation. It is criminally criminally underrated and unappreciated. Thank you so much for doing this in depth video!
This movie is one of those horror movies that executes gore properly. Not too overdone, not too violently action-packed and with really and intensely scary build up
For once, someone who doesn't say the movie is terrible.
People make mistakes. It is terrible. Not as horrible as the sequel, though.
TheDiamondKiller9
*Cheers*
this movie is amazing
"this isn't a shut your brain off and watch kind of film, it's a pay attention and you'll be rewarded kind of film"
I like that
loved this movie, never understood why people hate it so much.
+Strazdas I thought this movie was very well done, and often hold it up as an example of how movies based off of video games can be good.
People have bin told theres no such thing as a good vidio game movie for soooo long people can't see the good in any vidiogame mida.
Although I missed the specific significance of each monster (which this video gave me).
people are stupid
Finally! Someone who understands! I literally have everybody else around me that doesn't see Silent Hill the way I do. Thank you
:)
"I literally have everybody else around me that doesn't see Silent Hill the way I do."
That's actually perfect in a way because that's exactly what Silent Hill does to the people who enter it haha
@@GoodBadFlicks are you gonna do the sequel to Silent Hill?
Please don't use the word "literally" if you have no idea what it means. Hint: not that.
@@princeofcupspoc9073 literally
Playing the first Silent Hill game will change your mind.
And thus was Konami's last good decision before they decided to just become a bunch of pachinko-mongerers.
crazyinsane500 I still can't believe the direction Konami is going. So sad.
GoodBadFlicks can you do a review on the shitty second SH movie.
crazyinsane500 R.I.P Goemon
Boi Fillet it was good but bad as well
Hit the lever.
Nope, I list why in a long reply above.
In atmosphere yes. In the rest, not at all.
Further proof that the best remakes/adaptations are made by genuine fans of the original.

+IntimateGamer Thank you so much!
You have to admit tbe sequel was 'dumb'
Guy Incognito yes the sequel was pretty lame
Well, your stupid mind was read, how disappointing.
Your "Exploring" series is one of my favorite things on RUclips, period.
went back watching this after the Mortal Kombat 2021. and yes, Silent Hill is still the best video game movie adaptation in my opinion
I can't remember the last time I agreed harder with a video about a movie. Saw this in a theater when it was released and have been defending it ever since. QuickTime event outro spot on as well.
Liked, subbed.

GoodBadFlicks No problem. Oh, nice. Will watch. Thanks!
My only contention has always been that they replaced Harry and the reason why they replaced him:
"It quickly became clear however Harry never acted like a masculine character. There is no political correctness in Silent Hill."
Apparently only a woman can be vulnerable and acting in a desperate need to find their child.
Definitely something that bothered me as well. I hate that it's considered more likely that a mother would look for her child than a father.
Mothers typically have a stronger bond with there's kids I'm a single dad I'm kill for my son but I understand why they changed that
@@monkeykidd420 uh. Well, that's just depressive. No, mothers don't unless that's how it's been conditioned from birth. If mom is the only one who feeds and gives skin contact, then yes

Also nice to hear someone acknowledge and say how film adaptations have to change and do different from source materials (great examples by the way) it's annoying that video game fans don't seem to get this, there has to be changes, especially going from an interactive medium to a passive one
Also cold and snowy well into April... didn't realise Silent Hill was set in the UK...
They should've just had the girl screaming at the top of her lungs and then whispered in the mom's ear "Silent Hill"
that would have been much better
"You didn't notice it....but your brain did" 🤣 RLM Joke years in advance
OMG finally someone who gets it! No seriously, the number of reviewers, self-proclaimed lovers of the Silent Hill series, people I usually really like and respect that gave this movie horrendous reviews because it wasn't perfectly *identical* to the game series is too numerous to count. Fans of the games who clearly had a bias against it from the start or people who clearly did not pay attention enough or simply didn't "get" it...
Most common misunderstood elements of the movie:
*- "Why is Rose taking Sharon to toxic fumes Silent Hill in the middle of the night? That's stupid!"*
She wasn't...
That's stupid!"*
Did you not notice whenever the monsters got the upper hand - the children overwhelming Rose, PH nearly breaking down the door to get to her, etc - they suddenly stop and disapear? They were testing Rose's resolve to save her daughter. Rose, after these seemingly near death experiences, could've just broke mentally or given up, but she endures. Alessa's biological mother, Dahlia, was a coward with no backbone that did not stood up for her daughter against the cult and instead let them burn her to a crisp. She would not suffer another weak mother. See? There's a little bit more going on than the whole lot of nothing some people claim.
*- "Being born out of wedlock hardly qualifies as 'witch' material. Such a weak excuse versus the awesome game counterpart!"*
Can you not use your imagination for a damn second?
He has no point!."*
You can easily interprete PH representing Alessa's burning (literally) vengeance. He is an executioner, hunting down cultists in the hellish otherworld and punishing them for what they did. I thought it was kinda obvious really...
*- "There was no reason for the red nurse or the sexy nurses to be there! Much like PH, they are glorified cameos!"*
Sure, they are elements that have been made popular in later games that were included for recognition, but much like PH, they are still given a purpose.
This movie was amazing. AMAZING. I try and not get wrapped up by what the fanboi/troll crowd has to bitch about
The people in this thread who like the movie have to mock and demonize the people who don't, and that reflects very, very poorly on them.

Dominic Leduc Thank you! :)
The idea of having the snow as ash was great and added to the lore of the movie.
He actually has a purpose here and isn't just being injected in solely for fan service.
maxwell Honack in home coming it becomes pretty clear he is also judgement because the boogie man ending has Alex Shepard pay by becoming one of them
MlpDovalover 56, oh shit, I never got that ending!

GoodBadFlicks in the game pyramid represented more than rape it also represent the need to feel punished for the main character killing his wife
The first transformation scene is so truthful to the source material
Silent hill is a terrific film, the best video game adaptation and one that doesn't try to exploit its origins. It's sad that critics and audience didn't like it.
Just stumbled upon this video. This was a wonderful review and so happy to see someone else that liked this movie adaptation. LMAO I love the QTE's at the end. It makes me happy that there are people out there that understand why I love this movie so much.
Thanks!
Thank you thank you thank you, and love the video game button jumps at the end.
Kristen Berlett you are welcome! :)
One of my favourite horror movies... Great atmosphere and top notch characters and monsters... Great review!
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and consider this a hidden gem.
Like the idea of the one she never had, punishing those who wronged her.
my all-time favourite "horror" movie besides the shining..
WOUNDED WARSONG.... I love you!......
What an amazing, amazing, well constructed, researched and god damn NEEDED video!
I liked this, you should do more videos like this.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Pyramid head was a manifestation of guilt and his knife signifies burden in SH 2......not rape?
This is still my favorite "horror" movie. I love how you don't know what the hell is going on until the reveal toward the end. It's just creepy the whole time-- new horror movies don't unravel like this because audiences are dumbed down nowadays and are impatient.
"It was cold and snowy, even tough it was well into April."
Snow in April is not unusual in places where there is winter.
But it would be unusual in the location of the film, which is why they said it.
Even in Ohio we get snow into May sometimes
Patchwork Undead Indiana here and yeah weather is fuckin weird around here the Midwest
yeah we had 4 inches of snow in april/may this year >.>
clearly climate change hit silent hill a few years early
WE DIDN'T LISTEN
"...But now is the end of days and I... am... the reaper." I love this movie and that monologue is so awesome. Still the best video game adaptation, in my opinion.
Any chance we get an exploring video about the second movie as well?
Working on it. ^^
GoodBadFlicks Nice! =D
As a huge fan of the series, I followed along with Christophe Gans and the films' production at the time and I could tell from his dedication that it was going to be a great game adaptation. His absence from the second film off the bat really put everyone on edge that the sequel would suck...and it did.
Great review very underrated film!!!
Yeah they did an amazing job :) What are your thoughts on the sequel? Do you plan to make an episode on that as well some day?
I liked the sequel. It was flawed and nowhere near as good as the first but I still enjoyed it. I'd like to do an episode about it but can't find much info on it. Maybe in the future.
At first I thought it would be just a simple cash-in on the franchise, but it was a great movie. The mannequin scene(s) were fantastic!
I fell like a complete asshole, but i didn't thought there was even 1 fan of the series who liked the sequel and now i got 2...
HUGE Resident Evil fan here.. Never played one second of a Silent Hill game. I have no idea how that happened as it has always looked really interesting to me.
You're Not Here playing in the credits was a great way to end this movie.
I loved how you threw in The Rules of Attraction after mentioning Roger Avary.
My favorite horror movie of 2006, but man the sequel was piece of shit.. really, really bad
You tell’m! This movie is criminally underrated and does a great job adapting the source material.
13:04 I'm from Brantford and I always drive down that street on my way to work. Cool to know we are a little part of Silent Hill.
Nice to see a positive review of this. I'm not clued up on the game as I never actually played it properly. But I really enjoyed the movie. I also enjoyed your review which helped me better understand how it compared to the game franchise. I appreciate the movie even more now...
Thanks!
thank you for covering max payne
its a damn shame
I agree this movie is a completely underrated masterpiece, deep and engaging.
I love the soundtrack and the atmosphere of the movie but the plot is probably my biggest gripe along with Harry not being used.
Ragnarok Stravius Yeah, them using Pyramid Head in the sequels didn't make sense and robbed them of their own unique antagonists.
Wow really ? Like we all didn’t know that already !
God, I love this film so much, thank you GoodBadFlicks for giving Silent Hill a great review and retrospective. I'm also a massive fan of the games and have played the main first four. I would've loved to have played the other games in the franchise. Again, thanks very much GoodBadFlicks.
Been watching videos for 3 hours now. It's 2:48 in the morning.
