The other novels never talk down to kids with their writing style at all. I'm reading the Birth By Sleep novel to my 6 year old and she's loving it. Her favourite is Terra, poor child.
Sora's "no sad face" smiles in both the game and the manga are so beautiful in different ways Also them adding Enigmatic Man fight right after fighting the Behemoth at Hollow Bastion is the coolest thing ever
I write Kingdom Hearts fanfiction, so I read the novels for extra reference. I’m currently reading the DDD novel (I skipped the Coded one, which yes, does in fact exist). And not gonna lie, KH1 is probably the most barebones one. A lot of the novels don’t really change most stuff, but add new things instead. The Reverse Rebirth part of CoM has some chapters on Repliku’s POV, KH2 has a lot of new scenes showing what Riku, Naminé and Axel were doing throughout the game, Days describes a bit of what Xion was doing in her time away from the Organization, and BBS is probably everyone’s favorite. It shows TVA’s POVs for every world, but also includes Vanitas’ POV, and even has two whole chapters dedicated to the four year period between Ventus arriving in Land of Departure and the start of the game, which once again includes Vanitas’ POV. I won’t say what happens in case anyone wants to check out, but just know that whenever you see someone wanting or writing fanfic about a Vanitas redemption arc, those people probably read the BBS novel.
@@joeldavis9298 NO WAY! I’m doing pretty much that too, except it’s also a roleswap of Sora/Kairi and Roxas/Xion, and I plan on covering the entire series and slightly change some other stuff! Is your fic published? If yes, what’s the name? I’d love to check it out.

Hearing about the novel just now, like I'm certain many commenters are, and honestly. I kinda get it, as in "why make it." Since the main appeal of the series is Disney worlds, I could see a novel appealing to Disney fans who might not like video games. The first thing to comes to mind is moms. My mom for example loves reading novels, but she only started reading, say, the original Alice books after she saw the Disney movie and got curious. Makes me really wish this came over. Also being a huge One Piece fan, I am already aware that, over in Japan, there's already a large demographic of middle-aged women who love Shonen anime, which KH also falls a bit into. So yeah, making it makes a bit of sense.
There's also the fact that video game consoles and the games for them are quite expensive and not every parent wants to buy them for young children, or if they do have game consoles they usually get one brand (if not just one game console) and stick with it over the years. When i was growing up i only had Nintendo stuff and wouldn't dare ask for a Playstation when i already had plenty of games to play. So when i saw games i wanted from other consoles i would usually see if there were manga/novel adaptations so i could at least experience the story that way. When i was in Elementary school, there were actually a lot of people who only knew Kingdom Hearts as a manga and not a video game because they either weren't gamers or just didn't have Playstation, and read it in the school library.
As a new KH fan since January, I’ve been reading these KH novels myself for the last 2-3 months (having ordered the entire collection not long after completing KH1 for the first time in late February), and I’ve gotta say, these novels are very good reads! I’m currently almost halfway through the KH2 novel, and in spite of most of the changes, it’s actually a LOT better than the original KH2 so far, especially with ALL of its additional scenes featuring Riku, Namine, and Axel)! Thanks for talking about this, Pat! If you can or haven’t done so already, definitely give the other KH novels a read! I really can’t wait to read the rest of them myself! Also, congratulations on publishing your 100th video! I subscribed to your channel just about a month ago, and as a brand new KH fan myself (again, since late January this year), you’ve really helped me become a much bigger KH fan than I’ve already been for the last 6-8 months! Video Idea Request: What would KH be like if you COULD bring Disney party members to other worlds? Like what if you took Tarzan back on the Gummi Ship and he joined you for Agrabah and Atlantica? What if Aladdin was allowed to join you and not just Genie? How might dialogue change with Halloweentown or Neverland with more characters (and would Ariel get to be human Ariel when you're not in Atlantica)? How differently might the impact of Donald and Goofy abandoning Sora in Hollow Bastion be if other party members stuck by him (or would they ALL abandon him there)? Lots of interesting questions that would be fun to explore, and that's just KH1.
16:40 the Wyverns are the only "dragon" like heartless in KH1 so yeah Wyverns Also at least the novel kept an Ansem fight. The manga legit had zero fights against Ansem. Riku-Ansem just hands Sora the Keyblade of Heart for the sacrifice before leaving and outside of World of Chaos just showing up, Ansem's entire thing is skipped in favor of the "Kingdom Hearts is Light" bit.
I haven't read the novels but in my opinion they sit in the same place as the manga: they're not really a replacement for the games, but they're a fun companion piece as a new way to experience a story I already know I love and enjoy
HAPPY 100!!! So proud of you, Pat. Thanks for adding so much to the KH community. Excited to hear the good news, and I hope things keep looking up for you!!! Cheers man
A Kingdom Hearts novel series, but in a different continuity so they can have creative freedom, would be a great idea. They could really dig deep into the themes and characters, like how Traverse Town is literally a planet that exists to give people who lost their worlds a home, imagine what they could do with that in book form. I just want Disney characters interacting and dealing with the existential crisis of a universe ending apocalypse, but the MC rallies them all together to save the day and make the universe a better place in the future. A story like that would sell like hotcakes, the KH games are literally just a diet version of that idea and look at how much money they make.
Never read the KH novel but I definitely recall reading Pokémon and Sonic novelizations as a kid. The Pokémon one was funny because it was literally just a guy plowing straight through a copy of Red and constructing a story out of it, so it was also pitched as a “strategy guide,” but all he did was beast through the campaign with a level 80 Charizard.
I did NOT give you permission to make me cry with your epilogue at the end of this video. I'm so glad things are going well for you. It brings me great joy that you're successful and it sounds like you're happy
@41:35 You mentioned earlier in the video that the Darkside fought at Destiny Islands never got named as such. Was it still described as a big shaggy haired shadow man? My first thought was they somehow reinterpreted Darkside to be Ansem’s Guardian instead. Or maybe because the Guardian was viewed as just a curious trait of Ansem’s back then and not anything/anyone important it wasn’t considered a big deal to sub in Darkside

The Kingdom Hearts story is more than just lore dumps, obviously. There's plenty of pure character moments as well, also almost no lore happens in the actual Disney worlds, they're like their own self-contained thing (which is by design).
thank you for making content for my favorite franchise and favorite game of all time and i hope to keep seeing videos from you long into the future especially when kh4 comes out
Really enjoyed this a lot more than i thought i would, and also very pleased to hear that life has been looking up for you these past couple of years ❤️ we love to see it. I started watching in late 2020 and was hooked immediately, you have such a thoughtful insight in everything you do, and it gives me the same buzz that i get playing the new games for the first time, that award is well deserved. Here's wishing you an equally if not happier 2022\23 both online and in your personal life ❤️

Happy 100 Pat! Finding this channel in the thick of the pandemic relaunched a love for Kingdom Hearts that was put away like so much else at the end of childhood. Since that world ranking video showed up in my recommends I've played through the games I missed (which meant just about everything after Days) and got to work on building 100% files for the mainline titles (cracking down on 2 now!) I wouldn't have been reintroduced to this wonderful series that was so integral to my childhood if it weren't for you, so thank you and again: Congratulations!
hearing the ending bit made me very happy for you 🙂coming from similar mentalities (from what i can put together at least, i don't wanna assume too much), it's always very heart warming to hear people coming from mental places that aren't so happy or nice to them, to really discovering happiness and getting a lot more from life and coming into it all with hope and a sense to move forward. i've been on the updraft of "this is the best year of my life" for about three years myself now and again, i'm just happy to see it happening to other people. thank you for sharing!
I’ve only read bits and pieces of the light novels, but I think they’re really neat. Especially since Nomura has brought Tomoco Kanemaki on to help with writing and such for the actual games as well, so I like to think of stuff that happens in the novels as secondary canon, or “canon until proven otherwise”. From what I hear, the other light novels do get better as the games progress, but they are still fairly unchallenging reads, if you get my drift.
Aw Pat that was a really lovely video and such a sweet message at the end. Glad I watched all the way through to hear it. I will say this video actually got me pretty interested to read all of the novels. I've read Coded and BBS so far. The BBS novel for sure has a lot to talk about if you were going to make this a series.(There is like 20+ pages just dedicated to Vanitas and the tortures he goes through under old man werthers. It's a good read for sure.) Anyway Congrats on your 100th video! We are all so proud of you!
Congratulations, or I'm sorry, for having the best year of your life in these trying times. Keep up the good work/inventive videos going, no pressure. I wonder how KH2 novel handles the Land of Dragons or Pride Lands, if at all, since summons were completely omitted in this novel. They wouldn't have ever "met" Mushu or Simba.
Congrats Brayden on the 100th video my dude🎉🎉🎉!! It feels like only yesterday I was watching your board game video!! (Manga versus game video WHEN! LMAO?)
Kingdom Hearts actually taught me a lot of words growing up too. I had teachers in middle school baffled that I didn't know what the vocabulary words for the week meant but I explained to my math teacher what doppelganger means when she asked my English teacher. (And as an adult, I was assessed for autism, a lil vocab test included, and I did annoyingly well on it and will forever be amused that the word they stopped me on was panacea, which was a word I had only seen in DDD at that point, and could only express that is was some kind of medicine lol). I'm very glad you've come so far with this channel. I love your deep dives into things as well as your humorous shorter things (and the humor in the deep dives, of course). I still remember the first video of yours I stumbled upon, and the "oh thank fuckin god there's actual subtitles bless this man" and lo and behold, there's still subtitles lol. Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos, and I'm glad you find so much meaning and joy in making them too.
Congratulations on the 100th Video, Regular Pat. You put a lot of effort in this videos and I found quite fun and interesting to watched this videos from time to time dispise it more nieche and lazer focous subject matter. You are legit funny guy and you had changed or at least challagen my opinions about various things in Kingdom Hearts. Glad that you are also living your best life because of it. Hope it get to stay like this for videos to come.
Hey it’s so good to see someone talk about the novels, I hope you continue doing this as later entries do add a lot more. Above all I would recommend reading the doing videos on KH2 novel and the Birth By Sleep novel, you are in for a treat!
I have been watching you since about halfway into your second year on YT and I have loved every minute of it. Happy 100 videos, and thank you so much for the content you make!
Thank you for this video Pat! I've been wanting to do a comparison of the books vs the games but didn't really have the energy to do it, so this caters to my interests exactly, it's great!
Sorry to comment on an older video, congratulations on 100+ videos!! And great to hear life's been great recently, it brought a smile to my face. Always happy to hear what you have to say, you could talk about the evolution of the skill menus throughout the series for 2 hours and I'd get excited to see the notification for it To answer your question, the 358/2 Days novelization is actually very good. It adds quite a bit of prose and Roxas's introspective thoughts. There's like poetry at times describing the high emotions. It also adds a lot of scenes like Marluxia and Axel talking before Castle Oblivion and such. I still haven't had the time to read some of the other ones but I do recommend the Days novel if you're bored and want to revisit that game's story. It helps Tomoco Kanemaki helped write the game itself and named Xion.
I'd like to read more KH fanfiction. But the idea of reading Kingdom Hearts ITSELF in prose? That does sound pretty strange. I've heard that, like with the manga, the novel gets more creative with its story telling in the later installments. So I am interesting in learning more about them. I think some of my favorite moments you've mentioned include Kairi commenting on the Gummi Ship and the ocean between worlds and Kerchak PUNCHING THE CHAMELEON HEARTLESS! Anyway, it's crazy how much your channel has grown, that makes me really happy.
The novel referring to the Cave of Wonders entrance as "the tiger god" is especially interesting to me, because I owned a series of Disney storybooks in the mid 90's and read the Aladdin one a jillion times because it was my favorite. In that book, when Jafar first raises the cave, Gazeem the thief says "By Allah! A tiger god!" when in the movie he just says "By Allah!" This makes me wonder if there was something during film production about the cave entrance being a tiger god that got cut (possibly because it doesn't fit with the other references to Allah) but the phrase hung around in production materials that were later used as reference for games and books like these?
Honestly, featuring the Xemnas battle in the novel is like, oddly really cool? Like, an optional battle only in the Final Mix version of the game that arguably isn't canon to the series, and yet here it was included in the novel. Shows a level of dedication and such to the source material.
It kinda is canon. In the beginning of KH2, when we see Xemnas on the dark beach, he says “I’ve been to see him. He looks a lot like you.”. That’s what he’s referring to
@@tylercafe1260 ….we’re talking about the same thing, toxic trash. That fight wasn’t even in the original ps2 release, so it just confused everyone when they saw it in KH2

Congrats on 100 vids! Always happy to have a new Pat video to listen to while working. Also, really glad to hear that ur having a good year!
Big 100th special! You deserve everything you have now, hopefully 2023 and year 4 can even surpass all of the years so far
11:21-11:44 He does these also in the original Japanese version of _Kingdom Hearts._
25:40 From what I've looked, apparently in Japanese novel of _Aladdin_ , he's also referred as "Tiger God".
I’m glad you did this video for the novel
I can't even imagine consuming Kingdom Hearts as 100% story with no game play to break it up. I think my head would explode.
The Kingdom Hearts story is more than just lore dumps, obviously. There's plenty of pure character moments as well, also almost no lore happens in the actual Disney worlds, they're like their own self-contained thing (which is by design).
That outro mini speech 💕
Congrats on the 100th video! It's been a ride :D
thank you for making content for my favorite franchise and favorite game of all time and i hope to keep seeing videos from you long into the future especially when kh4 comes out
17:21 so Riku was onto something this entire time?
What do you mean?
@@SuperMoviemaster21 Riku smelling darkness in CoM.
Happy 100th, Regular Pat! Awesome vid digging into the Kingdom Hearts novel!
Here's wishing you an equally if not happier 2022\23 both online and in your personal life ❤️
Would be cool to see the other novels in this video style! Congrats on 100!
I don't really comment often but I watch all of your stuff and wanted to say I'm really glad to hear you're doing so well in life Pat! Makes me happy to see and not only inspires myself to keep going but others too I'm sure
I also really loved this video I played KH1 and every KH game on release and had never heard of the novels, I would love to see you cover the rest of them
This was a very interesting video considering I didn't even know that there was a kingdom hearts novel.
man we have to comment regularpats editing cause my god he has literally picked the perfect scene for every line he speaks
Really enjoyed the wholesome essay, and 100 videos is a huge accomplishment. Congrats!
Congrats on 100 videos and your 3 year anniversary
Wow, what a good pronunciation of Tomoco Kanemaki. I am very proud (not sarcasm, actually impressed)
for anyone reading this comment, i literally had Frosty send me a pronunciation of it so I didn't utterly biff it
Happy your year is going great!
What is fascinating about the novels is that as they go on
Their writting becomes more eloquent with its aging audience
I love this video SO much! Thank you for making it!
“My thumb hurts” lol those pages were dry!!!
great vid as always
congrats for hitting 100 uploads
i would really like for you to take a look at the other books too
i really enjoyed this
but honestly, as i said before, you could upload a vid of you reading the phone book and i would watch it lol
the way you present things just really works for me
Congrats on your 100th video! I loved this one. It's always great to see stuff from such a big fan of KH like you! 🙂
congrats on video 100!
Congrats on hitting 100 videos man! They're truly such a fun watch every time.
Aw Pat, happy one hundred
Fucking congratulations! I know it's late but I'm a new commer. 100 videos, love, recognition in your community! Thriving and hope the year kept up pace to be your new best! Happy to find a KH community 😃
What a novel idea! (Manga next please!)
Came back after the video ended. Once again, you deserve the award you received and likely all you'll receive in the future. Love your content man
Happy 100 Pat!
Happy 3 year anniversary to your channel! It's nice to hear that you're doing great
hearing the ending bit made me very happy for you 🙂coming from similar mentalities (from what i can put together at least, i don't wanna assume too much), it's always very heart warming to hear people coming from mental places that aren't so happy or nice to them, to really discovering happiness and getting a lot more from life and coming into it all with hope and a sense to move forward. i've been on the updraft of "this is the best year of my life" for about three years myself now and again, i'm just happy to see it happening to other people. thank you for sharing!
Congrats on 100 videos! The best KH RUclipsr out there.
12:30
Im sorry, the WHAT from the manga?!?
Sora getting propositioned by a hooker in Traverse Town is honestly iconic.
Perhaps their fight against the Darkside after their "fall into the endless abyss" is happening while they're still falling?
Thanks for the awesome kh content as always!!
100th video let's go
I remember hearing Pete actually drops the F bomb in the Kingdom hearts 2 novel
Congrats on 100! Let’s get to 1000!!
Congratulations on 100 videos!!!!!!!!
Now I'm curious about the other novelizations...
16:43 I'm pretty sure they are referring to the Wyvern Heartless. The do look like dragons
Pretty scary to think about them showing up as early as Wonderland
Hey it’s so good to see someone talk about the novels, I hope you continue doing this as later entries do add a lot more. Above all I would recommend reading the doing videos on KH2 novel and the Birth By Sleep novel, you are in for a treat!
Congrats again on 100! 🖤 Thank you for the great content as always, and also bringing "rIKU" back
I have been watching you since about halfway into your second year on YT and I have loved every minute of it. Happy 100 videos, and thank you so much for the content you make!
Thank you for this video Pat! I've been wanting to do a comparison of the books vs the games but didn't really have the energy to do it, so this caters to my interests exactly, it's great!
"What the heck is Kingdom Hearts?" - Sora, 2005
Congratulations on 100 videos!
Sorry to comment on an older video, congratulations on 100+ videos!! And great to hear life's been great recently, it brought a smile to my face. Always happy to hear what you have to say, you could talk about the evolution of the skill menus throughout the series for 2 hours and I'd get excited to see the notification for it
To answer your question, the 358/2 Days novelization is actually very good.
Yoooo 100 videos?! Congrats!
