My head canon will be that Pinnochio's nose grew when he said "Oh, so you're alone." cause hes literally standing right next to him, making him not alone. Riku just read too much into it 😂
Honestly, I love the decision of using KH3's data greeting feature to recreate the original scenes along the muffled distorted version of the Sountrack. It was both clever, but also effectly disturbing. Really capture what those passing were going for with the fuzy unerving fake and vague memories.
I like how wildly out of character Sora is in Namine's fanfiction memories she creates for Riku Replica. Also, how did the writers look at CoM and decide RR hadn't suffered enough?!
I’ve always felt Riku Replica was underrated as a character. Hearing his experience from his perspective in the novel was quite interesting and endearing. I have even more appreciation for his character now.
He might not be the most important in terms of being a character, but I think in terms of the themes of identity and subsequent tragedy his character introduces and explores, that's really important to the core of several other major characters and even some whole games and y'all need to acknowledge and respect him more.
6:55 The passage about how Marly passing through Sora felt familiar could also be a reference to how Xemnas as the Unknown in KH1FM passed through Sora in a similar manner to sample his memories like Marly did. Of course, Kairi passing through him makes sense too.
@@cillbipher2613bbs was also planned, especially that part, before kh2 released. Because roxas existed at all. But it was still most likely referencing kiari because they both passed through his heart in those scenes. Kiari left her heart in his, and Marluxia went through memories, which we know are stored in the heart.
The Riku replica segment actually made me cry the first time I read it. I really just love how the novels get you more in the characters heads and how they also focus more on the characters you dont really think about.
He has a chill voice. What a vibe to work to. I still want him to make a BBS treasure guide just because... I'd sit and listen and screech at all the chests I missed
43:20 I like how you made a room in Re:Chain specifically to illustrate Riku's secret spot. It might have been a small detail to most, but I appreciate the effort.
He didn't make that room. It's the save room you find at the end of each world after you beat the boss. The real question is, did he just beat maleficence to get there, or just went to the next floor and walked backward
I actually think the fact that Hook doesn’t act like Hook at all during his fight makes him creepier. It’s like Ansem or the darkness or whatever is merely using Hook’s image in order to further dig deeper into Riku’s insecurities.
KH2 novels are so interesting, you need to cover them! Not only do they do their own thing, but some of the new scenarios added in the novels were later implemented into kh2's final mix. like the scene with namine, riku and axel in twilight town, and roxas and axel's goodbye scene. it's not surprising that kanemaki was later hired to be a scenario writer for 358/2 days.
Yay! More talking about the novels! While they are sometimes a little simplistic and definitely not always canon accurate, they add a lot of fun insights. 18:20 I don't see that as a writing mistake, I mean, it could be, but I think it's more interesting if you take it as intentional or at least a happy accident. Because that implies that Sora sees all of what Riku did in KH1 as "being possessed by Ansem" and hasn't really come to terms with the fact that Riku was doing those things on purpose. To purposefully hurt Sora. So it's not only in character for Sora (who is the #1 Riku apologist) but also adds a little nuance. Again, could just be a happy accident, but I like it. ^^ 43:00 Yeah, I read it the same way. I think this line in the novels is still good though, because I think "keeping Kairi all to himself" is showing how Riku is really only seeing Kairi as a possession to hold over Sora. It's the way he wins over Sora, by keeping/saving Kairi. Cause he's definitely not considering Kairi's personhood through all this. So while I would like to see that line expanded on or maybe written slightly differently, I also see how it works and shows how dark and confusing Riku's feelings were at the time. 46:41 It's a shame you left out the next part of Riku's thoughts there "Right, because Kairi would only think of Sora. But I was the same. When Sora and I were together we could go anywhere. I really believed that. And then, with Kairi, who had to know something about the outside world...together, there was nowhere we couldn't go." because they are just MWAH (chef's kiss) and while yes, Riku is absolutely being a little shit, it's great insight into what he's feeling and what his hopes and dreams are. Love the editing you did for the Repliku stuff! That was a great way to visualize it. I just love Repliku's screwy memories in this novels. Sora's as well. It's interesting seeing them go through this brain fog. Great video, Pat!
Honestly thank you for bringing up the rest of Riku's thoughts at 46:41 . It was a little jarring to hear him skip over it when it seems very important to what Riku's headspace was like and calls back to the KH1 novel where he thinks similarly about asking Sora to go with him when their world fell. Otherwise, yes, it's a great video!
oh man, the riku replica sections were a treat, nicely done! loved the effort you made by remaking them in data greeting, and eerie bg music was a nice touch! These parts are also interesting since it gives me a bit of insight to why kanemaki was interesting in exploring the concept of replicas while scenario writing for 358. since, if i remember correctly, it was her idea to make xion a replica.
I’m really liking these novel adaptations videos, keep it up, it’s actually somehow reigniting my appreciation for KH by hearing you go into them and then me, later on, reading them myself.
Some thoughts I had while listening to this: Regarding the scene where Sora mentions Riku's Darkness Suit was a sign of him being possessed by Ansem, I'm actually inclined to think this isn't a continuity error. Not saying Sora was right, because Riku definitely wasn't possessed yet at the time of their first battle in Hollow Bastion, as Pat pointed out, but rather, I think this is Sora CHOOSING to believe that Riku was already possessed at this point. Why do I think this? Well, as Tennelle Flowers pointed out in his video analyzing Riku, Sora has a persistent habit of ignoring, denying, or rationalizing all of Riku's evil actions. He seems to sincerely believe, or at least sincerely wants to believe, that Riku only did what he did because he was being manipulated or controlled by evil characters like Maleficent and Ansem. This draws a parallel to how Eraqus in Dark Road insists that Darkness only exists in people if it forces its way inside them. He, like Sora, refuses to believe that the people he loves, the people he respects, could just naturally have darkness inside them as a product of their personality and desires. As such, since Sora's first real fight with Riku at Hollow Bastion has him attempt to murder Sora (hence the slow-motion drama of Riku's Dark Firaga in that scene), Sora insisting that Riku only did that because he was possessed at the time is absolutely in-character for Sora. I think he is effectively in denial about how Riku really did try to do some really bad stuff in that game of his own free will. My Top 5 Guesses for what world they end up at after talking to Namine: Twilight Town, Disney Castle, Traverse Town, Hollow Bastion, World that Never Was Monstro?! Lmao. And yes! I would love to see you cover the next novel! Great video!
49:05 Hang on, wasn't this book written in 2006? Is this the earliest mention of Even, Aeleus, and Ienzo? Their journal entries in CoM and KH2 don't mention their true names, at least not in the English versions. Maybe in Japanese they do, but if they don't, this would be the first time any KH media mentions their true names. Assuming this isn't some new addition from the English translation. Maybe they were in the Chain of Memories Ultimania, which I just found out exists and was released on my eleventh birthday that's cool
I loved that you kept the visuals in-line with the story to the point of relying on custom datagrams to stick to the commitment. I really did appreciate all of the attention to detail you seemed to put into every shot and clip for over an hour. Well done!
It's actually really nice knowing that Riku and Naminé's relationship is given some more depth in the novel. Riku has had strong mixed feelings towards Kairi and Naminé. Naminé meanwhile just wanted to be acknowledged and cared about. It's pretty much canon that the remnants of the heart the Riku Replica was starting to create ended up in the actual Riku. After the Replica died, Riku began to genuinely start liking Naminé not just because she was like Kairi, but for her differences as well. I can only imagine how them working together for a year trying to get Sora's memories back must have been. Skip forward to KH3 and Riku is reminiscing about the Replica and his own feelings towards Naminé. At the end of the game, he's even the one to bring her to the Destiny Islands.
Wow, the Repliku stuff is pretty fascinating. This makes me wish (more than I did before) they'd done more with him in KH3, considering they brought him up again. You did a great job portraying the eerie/dreamlike mood while he was reliving fake memories that weren't even his. Also, would love a KH2 novel video!! These are funny, informative and super easy to watch.
I wonder if them talking about the heartless being sluggish and not attacking first is a reference to a Sleeping darkness room card or Stagnant Space where the heartless all move slowly? It would be a cool but maybe slightly out of place nod to the game mechanics, Also I love Roxas zooming past on the skateboard and Riku angrily trying to chase him down
WOW that repliku chapter was REALLY creepy. I don't know how to describe it, just the concept and the way it's described, helped by the piano destiny islands and, kind of hilarious but well done KH3 snaps, just sent shivers down my spine, very unnerving. It's similar to the kind of feelings I felt listening to everywhere at the end of time but nowhere near as intense obviously. Something about that things sentience ebbing and flowing is just, ugh.
@regularpat idk if you will see this comment among the comments on all of your videos but I really enjoyed this video and the kingdom hearts 1 video comparing with the books. I was wondering if you had planned on continuing this series?
The bbs novel is one that is highly recommended looking into it has a lot of cool moments included giving Vanitas a backstory that makes me want to punch Xehanort more than usual it was my introduction to bbs and it’s definitely the best out of the novels I’ve read
Pretty sure the world after the Larxene fight is supposed to be The End of the World. Amalgamation of worlds, weird squishy floors, connects to the Destiny Islands.
If Kingdom Hearts somehow released a high budget visual novel akin to Type Moon.... Yeah I would buy it tbh XD I like how these stories add in novel thoughts into the scenes of the games! Also VERY VERY GREAT JOB with the way you composed the Repliku scenes, it felt very creepy the way you used music like I'm just a kid watching something on an old CRT, a recording of me watching on an old CRT
I really enjoy these recaps, hearing the differences in adaptations is fun and I especially enjoyed the extra effort you put in for the data greeting sections!
10:50 canon order is Agraba before Olympus before Wonderland Pat says that's insane. Pat goes to Wonderland and proceeds to use the Genie Jafar card. "Exactly what I would do" my butt.
I thought using the data greeting for scenes that are unique to the book or don't have a lot of cutscenes material was super cool!! I've always been interested in the books, and I would definitely watch a whole series of this if you end up doing more of the novel/game comparisons.
18:10 My thought process with this difference is the implication that Sora kind of can’t believe Riku could’ve been that mean on his own and must have already had some kind of influence from Ansem, since Riku doesn’t really tell him the exact moment that whole switch happened
Using photo mode to explain new scenes was genius, wow! Great video, I can't tell how annoying these are to make but I certainly have a lot of fun hearing your thoughts on the novels. I'm really fond on the novels, 358/2 Days especially. That has A LOT of changes from the game and cutscene movie
Yes I would greatly appreciate you reading the Kh2 novel. There is like an entire new subplot that takes up a good half of the novel featuring Axel Riku and namine as their own trio. Some scenes there even inspired FM scenes.
Early to a pat video, loving it. I can’t wait to see the comments on the Days Manga, they changes there were hilarious. Plus the heartless bosses go down in a few swings in the manga which I wish they did in game
37:42 I wonder if this is Axel remembering fighting Ventus as a kid in Hollow Bastion. Wasn’t a serious fight, but Ven was at the very least a trained Keyblade wielded at that point whereas Sora never had actual training. Probably a reach, but I appreciate when KH remembers Lea’s and Ven’s friendship.
I'm down to see a vid on the KH2 novelizations. I don't usually read game novelizations, so seeing how these played out has been fascinating from an adaptation perspective. I'm used to games being the "final" part of the book->movie->game adaptation chain, and the reverse of that usual flow has a lot of interesting challenges to overcome that are completely different than the usual.
I greatly enjoyed hearing about the novel considering I never would have read it myself. Interesting how many forms of media this story is presented in.
This video is the whole definition of "i expected copper, but never expected to find gold" The clever use of the Data greeting for the storytelling alings so well with the small changes or interesting portions of the plot in the manga. Top tier video 🗿
Chain of Memories back in the day was LIFE CHANGING! Seeing a whole new setup/game play, new world, new mysterious characters, I fell in love so hard. I remember obsessing over all the information I could find online. All the Japanese magazine scans I could take. Getting the game and the guide truly helped fill that void until KH2
Hearing about all the differences between the games and the novels is super interesting. I’d only recently watched a friend play through most the whole series so all these bits of supplemental material and remixes of the original stories are so interesting to learn about and think about!
Honestly, I thought Xaldin said something about being the favorite pupil in his death scene in the KH2 novel too. I guess everyone was Ansem the Wise's favorite. Zexion most likely was for real since he's the baby.
After these videos on the novels, I gotta admit, I'm really interested to see how they handle things in the Kingdom Hearts Union X (Or was it Unchained X when they put it out? Oh well, the one based on the gacha) novel. Especially considering it was released before that game's proper conclusion as well as the fact that the game's protagonist is essentially a silent self-insert with a handful of exceptions until the end. Considering the nature of the mobile games being... well, mobile games, I think novelizations and some additional art they seem to have from time to time would probably be interesting. Or more digestible than 6 hour cutscenes from a mobile game. Same goes for Dark Road too, so I hope they do give that and the rest of UX a novelization adaptation too.
Dude, why is KH1 Riku/Repliku so much of a yandere in the novels? "Kairi would only think of Sora", "Why won't you let me have Naminé?". Like, dude, chill
I think my favorite part of these books is the small quips the author makes about something that clearly annoyed them/caught their attention in the games. Like the part about how they keep rehashing Darkside.
The kh2 novels do have more changes. From world order to cutting worlds, to adapting returning worlds that were cut from the previous novelizations to new scenes.
Honestly I hope you cover all the novels this way. Not a lot of people cover them so even though I've already read them it's interesting to hear other people's thoughts
for fun, i have paused at 35:05 to permanently record my guess. Twilight Town, Traverse Town, Hollow Bastion, End of the World, uhhh Destiny Islands again.
Captions seem to've froze up at the very end of the script. Anyway, what I've picked up on having significant deviations in either structure or focus was the BbS novel(s). At any rate, I'd totally be up for sitting in for another fireside comparison!
42:47 I 100% agree here that's creepy as fuck, and I'm not sure why the original writers and/or the translators would word it that way. It would have been more in character or at least more acceptable if it was just like, idk, "and I felt happy, just a little bit, because I knew she was safe with me".
6:33 To be fair, by this point in the series, the proper names of Magic spells in cutscenes have never really been vocalized, especially in gameplay where either only the element or action you want the element to do is said out loud.
I really liked the Hundred Acre Woods segment. While it is a little confusing cannon-wise, I could imagine the author decided to put it in as a good way to get Sora alone for a little bit and reflect on what's going on, watching as his anxiety of the situation continues to eat away at him without the support of his friends. And it's all in the bright and colorful Winnie the Pooh world, it's great!
The place I thought of involving Heartless not attacking the heroes was in KH1 Halloween Town, where they were docile and did dances until Dr. Finklestein tried to make the artificial heart or whatever it was.
I know you think this won't be as well received as your other videos but I really like this "series" (?), it's interesting. Also appreciate your editing and all your work to creates scenes in Data Greeting, that was definitely noticed. I hope you'll do KH2 when you're done being burned out (and any other novels there are, I thought I was gifted a Days novel, but maybe I"m mistaken). Anyway, I appreciated, thumbs up, well done!
Very much enjoyed the book coverage your breakdown gives me everything I want to know about what the novels bring to the table. Hope to see more when you are feeling up to it.
Sorry it took so long for me to watch this! I was actually watching it along with your Gameboy COM playthrough so I could compare this video to GBA COM as well, but I got too impatient and watched the rest of this video lol Your editing is so thorough! Thank you for all of your hard work!!!!!
Video was great honestly. KH2 novel comparison would be fantastic. Hope it's not literally a whole year until you start it though haha. Keep up the good work my guy
21:15 Maybe I'm forgetting things myself, but most heartless kinda don't. Sure, most have eyes, and a few have mouths, but very few have noses, and I don't think a single heartless has any ears to speak of.
I'd love to see a video on the bbs novel cause of the vanitas bits. There's a lot of stuff in there that fleshed him out though Im pretty there's a chance that the stuff introduced in the novel about vanitas could be retconned out because of the kh3 stuff
The whole "Riku being obsessive over Kairi" thing was weird, but Riku gets a lot of strong character moments in the later books, mainly in KH2 and DDD.
28:10 ... pat, this is probably just referencing the fact that twilight town is a cozy lil sleepy town, with a track called lazy afternoons. all the heartless just got done working and are about ready to go to bed.
When Sora said the feeling of having someone pass through him felt familiar, he also could have been referring to Xemnas/Enigmatic Figure passing through him at the end of KH1:FM.
This was a really fun video! I really love looking at the differences between the different versions of the KH story, so it was cool to see such an in depth look. I would LOVE if you did a similar vid for the kh2 novels because there are some really interesting additions that make the kh2 novels (imo) the best of the bunch.
My head canon will be that Pinnochio's nose grew when he said "Oh, so you're alone." cause hes literally standing right next to him, making him not alone. Riku just read too much into it 😂

I really enjoy these recaps, hearing the differences in adaptations is fun and I especially enjoyed the extra effort you put in for the data greeting sections!
7:00 the “being passed through” line also feels like it could also be a reference to when Xemnas walks through Sora before his fight
10:50 canon order is Agraba before Olympus before Wonderland
Pat says that's insane.
I'd love to see you cover the manga sometime, especially kh2. They have crazy shit like jiminy vs luxord and Vexen's clone murdering Xaldin.
Using photo mode to explain new scenes was genius, wow! Great video, I can't tell how annoying these are to make but I certainly have a lot of fun hearing your thoughts on the novels. I'm really fond on the novels, 358/2 Days especially. That has A LOT of changes from the game and cutscene movie
love these types of videos!! they're just... really, really neat.
Wish I could've called out of work yesterday to watch this as soon as it dropped, great stuff as always.
Given when the book came out is is incredibly unlikely they planned this but who knows
The fact that the replica seems a bit sentient is unnerving. It’s not like it’s personally just changes, it actually contemplated what it’s seeing.
Highly enjoy the visuals you added for the Repliku bits! Another great video.
I greatly enjoyed hearing about the novel considering I never would have read it myself. Interesting how many forms of media this story is presented in.
Great video. Definitely worth the wait. I have been thinking about buying the novels and hearing you talk about them is very interesting.
This video is the whole definition of "i expected copper, but never expected to find gold"
The clever use of the Data greeting for the storytelling alings so well with the small changes or interesting portions of the plot in the manga.
Top tier video 🗿
34:17 I’m surprised Sora didn’t get a scar from that cheek cut.
Great video. The best KH content on the internet. I really hope you give DDD another chance. I think that game (as well as Re-com) are very underrated
I think my favorite part of these books is the small quips the author makes about something that clearly annoyed them/caught their attention in the games. Like the part about how they keep rehashing Darkside.
I’ve really enjoyed both of these novel break downs
35:38 the fact i did
My lest
Was hoollow basion
The destiny islands
Mostro
The kh2 novels do have more changes. From world order to cutting worlds, to adapting returning worlds that were cut from the previous novelizations to new scenes.
I like the scene recreations using the KH3 photo sandbox.
Great video!! I'd love to see more of these!
Captions seem to've froze up at the very end of the script. Anyway, what I've picked up on having significant deviations in either structure or focus was the BbS novel(s). At any rate, I'd totally be up for sitting in for another fireside comparison!
42:47
I 100% agree here that's creepy as fuck, and I'm not sure why the original writers and/or the translators would word it that way. It would have been more in character or at least more acceptable if it was just like, idk, "and I felt happy, just a little bit, because I knew she was safe with me".
31:13 YES! This was the most important part that I needed to know if it would be in the book or not.
I like your Novel vs. Game videos so I'd love to see more :D great use of music and KH3's editor to set the mood
The Data Greeting scenes were perfect 😂
Wow I really like why they did with the replica here. I wouldn’t mind some kind of spin off game or cutscene movie thing about that
Been missing your videos pat 💙
I was here before 100 views
Oh you were?
Im, also here
Here at 208
Good job
Glad someone referenced that random wrecked truck at the memory skyscraper
17:47 I don't think it's a reference, but that reminds me of Deep Dive when an organization 13 member comes out of a rock.
Very much enjoyed the book coverage your breakdown gives me everything I want to know about what the novels bring to the table. Hope to see more when you are feeling up to it.
This series slaps, would love to see more!
Sorry it took so long for me to watch this! I was actually watching it along with your Gameboy COM playthrough so I could compare this video to GBA COM as well, but I got too impatient and watched the rest of this video lol
Your editing is so thorough! Thank you for all of your hard work!!!!!
I really liked what you did with the data greeting stuff
Video was great honestly. KH2 novel comparison would be fantastic. Hope it's not literally a whole year until you start it though haha. Keep up the good work my guy
regular pat video lets go
im late to this but id love to see more of these types of videos! its super interesting to see all of the changes :D
The BBS novel has some great new parts in the same way that this CoM does, so I’d love to see a video on that down the line!
28:10
... pat, this is probably just referencing the fact that twilight town is a cozy lil sleepy town, with a track called lazy afternoons. all the heartless just got done working and are about ready to go to bed.
Man I love his long videos
Regular pat never disappoints.
When Sora said the feeling of having someone pass through him felt familiar, he also could have been referring to Xemnas/Enigmatic Figure passing through him at the end of KH1:FM.
You got me with “pummel that thumb-el” Take your like already. Lol
This is awesome! You have yourself a new subscriber!
This was a really fun video! I really love looking at the differences between the different versions of the KH story, so it was cool to see such an in depth look. I would LOVE if you did a similar vid for the kh2 novels because there are some really interesting additions that make the kh2 novels (imo) the best of the bunch.
"Men in black coats keep showing up and telling us confusing things" could be a summary for the entirety of KH's story as it stands as of right now.
