I absolutely love your method of pausing, as it does not ruin YOUR experience of reacting to the song as a whole. I get so frustrated with some reactors who cant even enjoy the experience due to stopping the video so much.
Thank you for being so understanding. I really appreciate it. YOU UNDERSTAND. I dont know how other reactors pause while listening on their first time - THE THOUGH OF IT IS physically painful for me, to be honest. I am a 64 year old man and this song has always brought tears to my eyes. If ever a man wishes to understand the (sometimes) soulful anguish of being a woman all he has to do is listen to what this beautiful lady is saying. Annie Lennox, a national treasure in Scotland and a gift to humanity. Check out how much of her time and energy she devotes in the service of the most disadvantaged of this world. peace.
The story of my life why didn't I learn to keep my big mouth shut and now i'm 73 and finally have learned to leave things unsaid.Love Annie and her songs love and peace.
Annie wrote this when she was going through bug life-changes. Her father had just died and she had recently become a mother. Annie is absolutely amazing.
It seems odd to say the revelation of singer's talent is when she *doesn't* sing, but for me the great moment of this performance is when, after the great dramatic outpouring of the final verse ("This is the fear/This is the dread/These are the contents of my head. And these are the years that we have spent/And this is what they represent." Just writing them down gives me chills!), she takes that pause before concluding with that shattering "This is how I feel." Destroys me every time. That's why Annie is genius.
She's so special. What a talent. Those words, so true and real. Not just Sweet Dreams. So many great songs solo and with the Eurythmics. Love is a stranger Right by your side Here comes the rain again
I love this darn song. I was in highschool in 2015 singing this song on the bus to school even though she was way before my time. According to Billboard and many music sources, Annie Lennox and Sade were the most successful female acts in U.K. music history!!!! Now Adele has joined them. But this is all to say that Annie is a legend.
My Very Compassionate K.S.O., This song is beautiful and that might be an understatement. "Why" is about the ending of a relationship that she seems to not want. She does see it ending and has begun to accept it. It took me a while to accept the end of my marriage, but I eventually came to terms with it's end. I pray you never go through that pain. This song speaks volumes to me, though it didn't have that much of an effect on me when it first was released in 1992. I was still living with my mom in Sacramento working at a Chevron station. I was a full service attendant and my mom was a cashier. I will put this song into my playlist among the top. May the Lord's light keep directing you and the straight and narrow.
Isn't this just the most amazing video performance by the incredible Annie Lennox. It's just perfect. Wow. What an incredible song by her, so powerful.
Annie Lennox is my favorite female singer of all time. I've been obsessed with her for over 30 years. Picking a favorite song is nearly impossible but I love "Money Can't Buy It" "Cold" & "Little Bird" which are all on her album Diva ironically. The entire album is perfection.
I am crazy about Annie Lennox, and now I'm crazy about you. You. really get Annie's songs. She's not afraid of the dark, within and without. Good job. If a human hears this song, how could he or she not weep at this song? It's a cry, a grief for a boat that is sinking - her relationship. Great reaction!!!
I could be wrong, but I interpret this song to be Annie singing the song to her former Eurythmics partner, Dave Stewart (who was, at the time, married to Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama/Shakespear's Sister). Annie and Dave were romantically involved long ago, but had split up before forming Eurythmics. This song was Annie's first release after the Eurythmics went on hiatus in 1990. It seemed at this point that the group had disbanded, but they did reunite for another album in 1999, and recorded a new song for another greatest hits collection in 2005. The music video for 'Why' was directed by Sophie Muller, who directed the videos from Eurythmics' 'Savage' album (you've done a reaction to one of them - 'Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)'), and all but one of the Shakespear's Sister videos. She has a unique style.
@@daleminton6822 This one was definitely released first. Annie had a duet with Al Green, 'Put a Little Love In Your Heart', released in late 1988 though before this, from the Scrooged soundtrack, and recorded a track for the Red, Hot + Blue AIDS benefit album in 1990, but this was her first solo single release. 'Precious' was also released in between this one and 'Walking On Broken Glass' - in Europe and Australasia, anyway (I'm not sure about the US).
You probably know more than I do and you're probably right. I always thought, though, that this song's lyrics fit so well with the situation some women find themselves in when they fall in love with a man who turns out to be a control freak. The kind that thinks his partner is never good enough to live up to the perfection he deserves and is always tearing down her right to be the person she expresses herself as and the independence to live her life and follow her dreams as she wishes. He will shut her down when she tries to explain that she is being deadened inside by his criticism and smothering behaviour. He is then offended and enraged by what he sees as her mouthing off criticism of his perfectly unreproachable self. Anyhow, Annie Lennox Is a living legend and her songs and voice have a truly cleansing and healing effect on the soul.

There's a live version of this. It was at some kind of awards ceremony I think. Just Annie Lennox, accompanying herself on the piano. Not as lush as this studio version but even more powerful and emotional.
When Annie Lennox started releasing solo stuff, at the time, my impressions was that it felt weaker than her Eurythmics stuff. But now, i don't feel that way anymore.
