An angel who touched the hearts of many people and forever will be irreplaceable. Miss you so much rest in peace Karen carpenter. You left this world too soon but your lovely velvety contralto voice never will
What else could be said about the Phenomenal Karen Carpenter. Like her brother Richard, I think they were absolutely brilliant in what they did and they made it look very easy. Richard was the master of arranging and picking the songs and Karen was that one and only voice, A voice unlike anyone else who has ever lived or who will live in the future. No one else could ever touch the voice of Karen Carpenter. She not only touched your heart so deeply, but your soul right down to the core. I still get chills all over when I hear her sing. Without a doubt the greatest voice I have ever heard in my life. Karen will always be so loved and so missed forever
I'm very late to the reaction but wanted to share that this was her favorite song. She did say that this song was about her life and when she sang it live, she would almost cry. She truly needed to be loved and she was so lovely.
Karen Carpenter had so much talent, not only is she one of the greatest vocalist, she was voted the best drummer in 1975 by a poll taken in Playboy magazine.
Karen's voice was warm velvet. They were and remain my all time favorite recording group. I grew up near their home in Downey, CA in the 70s. Those were the days.
All that she wanted was to be loved. she loved children and wanted a family. so sad that she never found the right one. an angel, taken from us too soon. Thanks for the great reaction to a great song.
@@jbratchie57 Me also Jon. I cried upon hearing of her death. At least a new generation of people are being exposed to their music and so far they have been just in awe of her vocal skills and her drumming skills. This raw talent only comes once in a lifetime. . I miss that voice.
I really relate to the words of this song. They’re quite direct and clear eyed. And almost brutally true despite the sweet music they’re sung to. ‘I used to say no promises, let’s keep it simple. But freedom only helps you say goodbye ‘ That’s about right. Going through one relationship after another while you naively wait for that perfect one to come along. And finally realising Prince Charming only lives in fairy tales. ‘I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world. And fool enough to think that’s what I’ll find.’ Yes indeed. ‘I know I need to be in love, I know I’ve wasted too much time.’ Great message for all the people out there blithely waiting for that perfect one to come along. I hope they all find someone good enough before missing out finding anyone.
Her voice could bring a tear to anyone's eye. This song sounds like her own life. She waited so long to marry, and look what she got. A problem that lasted only a year. So sad. She deserved so much more.
It's the exposure. If Madison Ave decided that Lawrence Welk is the new hip music of the times and played it every day, people would listen to it... ( Well! maybe not )
She didn't need to show her body for at make people listening to her...She born to sing!! such a fascinating, unique tender voice that touches the soul, melting the heart! She makes me cry every time listening to her! That tenderness, pureness & sadness in her voice!! What A short life..What a tragic end 💔 Thank you..Awesome reaction🌸🌸
What are you talking about "she didn't need to show her body"? She had a massive eating disorder. And... she wasn't "born to sing". She was born to play the drums. Singing is what she got pidgeonholed into.
She died when I was 13 ..... I cried for days... still cry at times.... I feel her voice is the angel that soothes me... the angel that although makes me so damn melancholy, gives me peace...
I remember being in a large choir in High School and one of the alto singers sang this song as a solo. I had the biggest crush on her and i always associate that with this song.
FRANK SINATRA WAS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. A RARE TALENT RECOGNIZES ANOTHER WHEN HE SEES. If I had to choose just one singer to listen to until the end of my life, it would be KAREN ANNE CARPENTER.
K.S.O your words hit home. None of us can really know what is going on with a person. We are all experts at hiding sometimes. Sometimes hiding good things and I am afraid bad things that we want no one else to know about. Karen Carpenter had one of the most beautiful voices in the history of this planet and yet she was seeing her own demons. We are lucky that with videos we can never really forget about her.
The beauty of her voice is that she could perform live like she is here and you know she is not lip syncing. One of a kind talent never to be be duplicated
I'm fairly certain I read that this was her favorite Carpenter's song. This song embodies everything that Karen was. You can see it in her eyes in this performance.
I heard Richard say in an interview that even when she was at her sickest she could still sing effortlessly. What a gift. What a tragedy. Think of all the songs that we never got to hear.
Oh Karen. I don’t know how much you realized how much influence you had on everyone. I have always been a hardcore rock and roller. But on the flip side, I have been a huge closeted Karen Carpenter fan, as well. And I am definitely not alone.
Anorexics are masters at hiding their disease... and I talk from personal experience as I recovered from it myself. You could hear the sadness in her voice though, but then she would take us back to a sunny beautiful place with that smile of hers... She was also an accomplished drummer! One of the first female drummers actually. Please react to her "Rainy days and Mondays"😊 it is one of their greatest classics!
Taylor Swift just admitted recently that she had trouble with an eating disorder, she just put on about 10 to 15 pounds ( I would guess) and she looks so much better and happier.
I have loved Karen Carpenter for so long. It's interesting when you say she always seems so pulled together. I see a beautiful woman who may not have realized her worth. I also see her in her first videos at a normal weight and as time goes on you can see her descent into anorexia. It's almost unbearably sad after all these years. Yet that voice is perfection.
Richard recalled that it was Karen's favorite Carpenters song. "I Need to Be in Love" is a song written by Richard Carpenter, Albert Hammond and John Bettis. It was released as a single on May 21, 1976. It was featured on the A Kind of Hush album, which was released on June 11 of the same year.
I actually had the honor of meeting Karen and Richard once. After a concert (at UGA back in 1971 or 72... I forget which) I went across the street to a burger joint. Karen and Richard were in there. We talked a bit. They both were very friendly and courteous. Karen was a doll! I'll never forget.
There is always that sadness in her voice. A voice that is so beautiful and clear. I too can find it hard to fathom her hurts. She must have been in so much pain and she had to put on that smile and she sang from her heart. That business and family had to have hurt her deeply. God bless Karen.
That how they found a name for anexoria, the eating disorder. Because of Karen, but she was amazing as Dionne Warwick said, there never be another Karen. I love her her voice is timeless
She was actually doing really well, she beat her anorexia and was looking forward to the future and her heart was just too weak and it finally gave out!
I don't think she recovered from anorexia, she was a good weight when she died but her autopsy report said she died from heart failure due to ipicac toxicity.
Karen had a God given voice to sing, and I don't think she every realized it, as she would have preferred to play the drums, where she was all smiles, instead of being the Superstar that she became in front of the band. She went way to early. John Bettis, who co-wrote 36 of their songs, said in an interview, "When I first heard her voice, she sounded just as you hear her now. She was only 16 years old at that time." RIP Karen.
Love your comments here, about being kind. You don’t know what people are going through. From what I can gather Karen had a difficult relationship with her mother, her brother Richard was the favourite. Karen’s voice was one-of-a-kind; Herb Alpert said it was like she was singing only to you. It just hits you in the gut. This song is up there for me but I think my favourite is I won’t last a day without you.
It is hard to react to the Carpenters as everything they did was always amazing, Karen Carpenters voice is always angelic. She went too soon I think they gave her her wings early and she is now probably teaching other angels how to sing in heaven.
BAWLING LIKE A BABY - TOO BEAUTIFUL FOR WORDS!!!!!! She never was happy - genuinely happy, and much too soft and frail to take it. Hers was the most angelic voice out there. PERIOD.
Karen sounded so beautiful here, if you read what she done to herself it was particularly upsetting, overdosing on thyroid tablets to speed up her heart when she was a skeleton, taking up to 100 laxatives a day, as well ipicac syrup to induce vomiting, for someone so gorgeous and beautiful to do that to herself is just so sad.
Sadly, the biographies I've read and interviews available suggest to me that Karen saw herself and Richard as some sort of gestalt entity - The Carpenters - and never truly moved on with or to a life of her own.
Such a beautiful song and the master is in session on this one. Who could sing this better? If you like this..."Goodbye To Love" is the one to listen to. Beautiful. Great reaction!
THANK YOU K.S.O. for your response which was so true and even for playing this video which I was not familiar with prior. And I am in total agreement with the several below and especially with Richard White.

From their 1976 A Kind Of Hush album. The album version is exquisite. She was 26 and had her whole life in front of her. They did a song in 1972 called "A Song For You". Recommend it.
This is one of my very favorite songs by The Carpenters, and you found a gorgeous performance!! THANK YOU!! This song is from their album, "A Kind of Hush." While the title song is probably the most famous from this album, two other cuts from the album always hit me to my core: "One More Time" and "I Have You." If you can find time to react to those two songs, I would appreciate it!
Seeing her and hearing her voice brings back childhood memories and the feeling that she was family. She reminded me of my cousins. My FAVORITE Christmas song is their song “Merry Christmas Darling” so sweet. 😢
It's too bad that Karens life was so short lived. She, and her brother was a true phenominal act. They could have gone so far. Karens voice was tender, and well meaning. You could tell she just felt every word she sang. It was a true gift from God. I miss this "Golden Duo". They both brought such magic to their songs. I, myself, will never forget them, as I truly felt every word in my heart! Thank you both for bringing such beautiful music into my Life.. God bless, and may Karen rest forever in Peace..
KSO, You are so emotional and sentimental. I love Karen. I've been listening to her forever. She is just angelic. John Lennon once said to Karen, " You have the best voice I have ever heard " I do get so angry that Richard and family couldn't see her wasting away. Her mother was really horrible to her. Richard was her favorite. At the end Karen was down to 78 pounds. Gained some back but it never took. You're so right,#, People should be kind to one another. Love your reations to my dear Karen. As you said in one video, " She's a theif of hearts " Thanks again KSO. God richly bless you.
The arrangements by John were as magical as Karen's voice. She keeps you hanging on every note. This is my favorite one as well. Side note: I use it to punish disruptive junior high boys in my classroom. It brings me a sort of joy twice. It's harmless, but to see them squirm is... fun 😏
I think they made two movies about her life if you go to the Karen Carpenter story or movie and watch it you will love her even more. What a sad Story. Looks like it was her mother. According to what they portrait the mother never shows any affection to Karen. All the affection went to Richard. That is what I got from watching it.
She was so very sick at the time of this performance but the voice never showed it. Her clothes hide how thin she was. But that glorious voice never failed.
Karen was older than my mother, who turns 70 this year. I am deeply deeply in love with her and going into a deep depression thinking of how we lost her too soon...
Fame comes at a price. Talent is admired and respected. The stress and frustration of being in front of an audience and performing each time. They became legends of their own.
Karen's voice is instantly recognizable within the first 3 notes of any song she sings. As a fantastic vocalist; she considered herself to be a better drummer.
There was a lot of truth to that song. Karen on the road for years had no social life. She dated one of the backup drummers in her band, (not the regular one named Cubby - btw he was a former 'mouseketeer' ). Karen finally met a guy who said he was a real estate developer and had never heard of her. They got married and later he took her for all she was worth.. he was a con-man. Sad.
She had the voice of an angel, but left us too soon. By the time she turned 32 years old, she was not much more than skin and bones. No other voice came close to her voice and talent.
Written by Richard Carpenter & John Bettis. ------------This is Karen in '76, just before Anorexia took hold of her openly. As we later knew, she was " Binging-Purging", with Syrup of Ipecac. -------------------RIP, gorgeous Karen. ------------------------Wolfsky9, 73 y/o
I'm always amazed at how people that seem to have everything still despair. It reminds me of the line from The Matrix where the Agent says that humans are defined by their misery.
Can I listen to her once without tearing up??? No!! This my friends is a once in a lifetime talent! That beautiful low register....chills.

Karen was doubtless one of the greatest female vocalists of all time! I'm not ashamed to say that I wept on the day she died.
The most magical quality of Karen's voice is how she involves the listener in her emotions.
She was actually doing really well, she beat her anorexia and was looking forward to the future and her heart was just too weak and it finally gave out!
Correct
I don't think she recovered from anorexia, she was a good weight when she died but her autopsy report said she died from heart failure due to ipicac toxicity.
She gained weight to quick. And her heart gave out. It took one person to say she was fat and that's all it took.

Karen finally met a guy who said he was a real estate developer and had never heard of her. They got married and later he took her for all she was worth.. he was a con-man. Sad.
Karen had a very very smooth voice . No auto tune on her voice. I love it when she hits those notes that are flat .
She is amazing and looks stunning here check out her expression at 3.49
You have great taste in music. Her voice is so calming to me.
I'm so glad!
She had the voice of an angel, but left us too soon. By the time she turned 32 years old, she was not much more than skin and bones. No other voice came close to her voice and talent.
My Heart's been broken since 1972😞😪♥️
Written by Richard Carpenter & John Bettis.
Burt Bacharach nailed it - 'Musically, she was practically perfection'. Quite so.
