Karen's last recording, "Now", was recorded in April 1982 while Karen was taking a break from medical treatment in New York and had temporarily returned to California. Yes. As much as a perfectionist as Karen was, she could not do another take. In fact, she was so weak and out of breath They had to stop. It would be her last recording session. Richard was very adamant about holding onto this recording, but he gave in to the demands of her fans.... the instrumentation and all that was his idea to " polish " the song..... although I think less could have been so much more.

My Mum often speaks of Duran Duran being her childhood, but that was her teens.
The Carpenters was her childhood CHILDHOOD.
They were quite big here in the UK with a whole plethora of hits, and recently we’ve been going through a load of old stuff we’ve had in the loft/attic for years and years and years, and amongst the miscellany of dusty items we found a box of vinyls from way back in the day, I’m talking 70s and 80s vintage that my Mum and Dad collected, Status Quo, collections of new wave hits, Showaddywaddy (look them up), Howard Jones, Jeff Wayne’s Eve of the War, Tears for Fears, and in amongst them I found The Carpenters Singles 1969-73 and my Mum started going on about them.
She played Top of the World to me, and felt myself instantly fall in love with Karen’s heavenly voice.
Glad I did, I’ve been listening to them all day, I’m definitely a fan now!
You know you’ve touched generations and your a biblically good singer when John Lennon and Paul McCartney shower you with everlasting praise, Paul himself was a bit smitten about her voice, John literally approach her in public or something just to say her voice was incredible!

The background vocalists I believe were the OK Chorale....and this song was recorded by Karen in April 1982, when she came home to LA from NY on break from her anorexia nervosa treatment where she was so thin....but wanted to come home to record...she had so much more to sing...a voice like that....

I'm 65, and I have never heard this song before. So beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes knowing that Karen never believed how beautiful she was inside and out. I wanted her to find true happiness in her life and who and what she was. I will never forget hearing on the radio that Karen had died. I was driving home to Ohio from a teaching job in NY, and I was crying all the way home. We miss you Karen!!

this song always makes me cry. knowing it was her last recorded vocal. she had sung this in one take. she was not able to complete the song with her backing vocals so after her death richard hired a chorale group to finish off the background vocals on this song and the other songs they had recorded for voice of the heart album

This recording demonstrates just how beautifully she could sing in every octave of her inimitable vocal range. Her seamless transitions from her angelic upper register to her trademark lower register are breathtaking. Imagine what she would have done with challenging Sondheim material like “Not While I’m Around” from Sweeney Todd. What an incalculable loss.

I grew up as a young 7 / 8year old. It was a great time to live when everything was new. I felt the same way hearing her for the first time as a new artist. Our music teacher Mrs. Malsowski played the new songs when I was in the 5th grade. She said this was music that was simply heard but very complex to create. Every Friday we listened to Karen.
