You know she started out as a drummer with her brother Richard Carpenter. He played piano and did some singing as well. She died from anorexia…well it was the side effects from it that caused other complications and eventually her heart just gave out. This eating disorder that took
her when she still had so much to share with us started from ONE article saying she was “chubby” and that caused a snowball effect in the media when she was nowhere near overweight. She never liked being in the spotlight and preferred to sit at the drums playing and singing but her management team essentially made her be front and center. My momma cried the day she passed away and my older sister walked down the aisle after their vows to “We’ve Only Just Begun”
She was a very cute girl before the images of her used in this video. By this time she was so sunken in and fragile. It messed up her teeth from all the vomiting and she lost most of her hair-cheekbones completely caved in.
Thank you for covering this song. And yes. She was an angel who only wanted to love and be loved and never got it.. 😔

"Now" was a work lead, recorded in one take, and was intended to familiarize the musicians with the song as well as Richard's arrangement of it. After a complete music track had been recorded, Karen would have then returned to the studio and recorded new vocals for the song. But as it was, the work lead turned out to be the last song Karen ever recorded.
In the bio-pic made-for-TV movie, the way this was depicted is that Karen said she wanted to do another take, but Richard and the engineer both said no way because could not be improved upon.

Not only was this her last recording, it technically wasn't an 'official' recording in that what you're hearing is her 'scratch track' 'throw away vocal' intended only as a guide for the musicians laying down the backing track. Then she would go back and do the 'real' final vocal. She never did. This is portrayed by Cynthia Gibb at the end of the made for TV movie "The Karen Carpenter Story".

When you think of how many talented artists we have lost over the years at early ages it's mind blowing. What kind of demons are thrown into their lives with success and stardom? The physical and mental tear down from the constant demands of the industry. Tour, record, repeat, knowing that to the powerful labels you are but a disposable commodity. How many smiles and photo shots at award shows get turned into tears shortly after the studios move on from you? To be blunt, Karen was neglected by her family and her label. Her needs as an individual never satiated. Call it what you will, her loss was needless and tragic.

She (Karen) would say she would just walk out on stage and sing. Pure magic!!! Also the Karen Carpenter Story referred to her as having a one in a million voice. There are a great deal of talented artists living and not living. To me Karen’s voice and talent , penetrates

Olivia Newton-John has done a few duets. There's a live one with John Denver - "Fly Away" - that's 3 min long, and the studio recording of it which is about 4 min long.

We lost an absolute angel when she passed. She was one of my mother’s all-time favorites along with Anne Murray.

Sadly, some of the Greatest Gifts to Music were also the Last Songs Legends Recorded. This one From Karen, "Grow old along with me" by John Lennon, "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding and "I got a Name" by Jim Croce.
Today, we're thinking about them because Olivia Newton-John Passed away. Another Angel has joined the Heavenly Choir and the World is all the Lesser for it. RIP to all of them.

I listen to Karen Carpenters song , “Merry Christmas Darling “ every Christmas. My Mom played it when my Dad was in Vietnam in 1970. It is a sad but one of the most beautiful songs. You will love it.❤️

The " work lead ", meaning just Richard on piano, & Karen singing, was done in May of '82. Karen was deeply anorexia , as well as doing Binge-Purge eating, & using Ipecac syrup to force vomiting. Using Ipecac every day is what killed her , as it destroued her heart muscles. After her death, Richard went back into the studio, & with the " OK Chorale " from Long Beach State University, e completed this song for the Posthumous album, " Voice Of The Heart", which came out in the Fall of '83. Karen died on 2/10/83, at 0750 hrs. That's when paramedics got to her & found her heart already dead. -------A friend of mine who was an RN like I was, took the paramedic call in the ED at Downey Regional medical Center, where Karen was transported & pronounced on arrival. -----That work-lead was THE final time Karen ever sang-----tragically.-----WolfSky9, 75 y/o

another of the LORD's Gifts from our wonderful BOOMER generation. She is an absolute angel, 'purest' voice ever, inner beauty and beautiful LADY and her gentle soul. I am melting away; saw her in concert in '71, absolute Beauty. Also, 2 others who have same inner and outer beauty are LINDA RONDSTADT and ROBERTA FLACK! STUNNING!
