I'm reading Little Girl Blue right now and in it she says her singing was an accident. She so wanted to play drums and sing. They said because she was only 5-4 tall that the audience couldn't see her when she was singing. If they had just let her play drums and sing I think things possibly could have been different. No way of knowing for sure though because she had it in her head that she needed to be thinner. If she had just gotten the support she needed at home it may have turned out so much differently.
Such a great loss to the music world.

"Superstar" was recorded by Karen on her first take, singing the lyrics that had been scribbled by Richard onto a napkin. It took a while for Karen to warm up to the song.
"For some reason that tune didn't hit me in the beginning," she recalled in a 1981 interview. "It's the only one. Richard looked at me like I had three heads. He said: 'Are you out of your mind?' When I heard his arrangement of it I fell over, and now it's one of my favorites too."

She took only 3 bites of the cheeseburger and ate little fries. I asked her if she wanted to take the rest, she said no. The blonde was not very polite. She could that I knew who she was. Saw her sing in 1972, one of the best Drummer/Singers ever. She broke the glass ceiling for women playing their own instruments Other great songs Trying to get the Feeling Again, Solitaire, Help, and Goodbye to Love. Died at the age of 32 a month before her 33rd birthday. Check out the songs mentioned on youtube and check out Karen CarpenterKick Ass Drummer

What she went through in her childhood, what she went through in her marriage....Poor sweet Karen. All she wanted was to be loved. Not abused, not bullied, not treated so coldly. It makes me tear up just thinking about it...

When I was young man I met a beautiful young woman and this was the song that was playing when we met. I fell in love with her right then and there! Sadly, she died shortly thereafter in a car accident that broke my heart! I tear up everytime I hear this song.

The most hauntingly beautiful song The Carpenters ever did.

Karen was a gift to all of us who love beautiful music. It breaks my heart every time I think about her struggle with anorexia nervosa and the tragic ending. So very sad.

One of my favs- really showcases that liquid-velvet voice she had. Luther Vandross’ cover certainly doesn’t pain the ears. Karen’s voice is just so incredibly unique.
As commented before, if you’ve not, y’all MUST see Karen & Ella Fitzgerald’s live duet/medley!!! Such a rare treasure & blessing. I’ve always felt it may be the closest to Heaven we get this side of the sky🥰❤️
    Thnx for another wonderful reaction!
    Stay safe & love much💖

This version ended up at #2 on the top 100 chart and stayed there for 12 weeks. Luther Vandross recorded his cover of it 12 years after the Carpenters made it a hit. Luther's version hit #5 on the R&B chart and 87 on the top 100 chart. This was done in one take with Karen reading the lyrics off a napkin. Amazing!!!

Luther's version in my opinion is more romantic and touches my heart more! Who cares where Luther's version charted! He never got the recognition he deserved, because he never crossed over to Pop Music.

Luther really made it his own, but because it's such a great song I thoroughly enjoy the original and the remake.

Loved your reaction. You’re both so sincere with your feelings and make me see how much you care about Karen’s personal struggles just like we did when we first heard the dreadful news of her passing.

The Carpenters were inspired to cover this after hearing Bette Midler's cover of it she sang on the Johnny Carson Show. It would definitely be worth listening to the version that inspired this great version of this great song
