According to Carpenters lore, the version you hear on the recording is the first time Karen ever sang the song. Richard had transcribed the lyrics for her with some small changes, and she was going to lay down a "working vocal" so they could tweak the arrangement. Richard tried several other takes, but none equaled the first dry run. This legendary performance was literally Karen warming up.

I was just saying today - seriously - that I think Karen Carpenter was the best vocalist I've ever heard. She has a very welcoming, warm tone to her voice, but it's not overdone. It's subtle and smooth and sincere. But there's also this underlying sadness that permeates everything she sings, this feeling like she is fine with the world as it is, but she still longs for the world the way it could have been. It's a very nostalgic, heartbroken but again extremely subtle tone that just makes her music timeless. My favorite song from her is still one of her simplest tunes: "Close To You". She sings this almost nursery rhyme of a song flawlessly, and yet there's this strong undercurrent of regret and longing that just lifts the song way higher than it has any right to be. It still bothers me that she never realized how beautiful and talented she was and ended up dying by starving herself to death to live up to some impossible image no one wanted from her. I still hold Karen Carpenter very close to my heart, and I always will.

It does my heart good to see younger people listening to KC and appreciating her unsurpassed talent. I've loved her since I was kid in the 70s and The Carpenters always remind of my childhood, but she really is timelsss. It's like what Herb Alpert said, when first hearing her voice, that as soon as she starts to sing her presence is there - like it envelopes you. Losing her to anorexia was such a shock, because until then no one had really heard of it or knew it existed. At least we still have her gift. Great reaction.

She was a Superstar. One of the biggest of the 1970s...of all time. You Millennials need to go back in time and see what was. Look how nice she was dressed. This was class. And it was the Official Video...first Official TV Video, anyway.

She's only only 21 here... Absolutely astounding. Her voice is like warm honey..
Definitely check out some of their other songs they were absolute mega stars in the 60s and 70s..
She passed away in 1983, at the age of only 32. :( :( Complications from anorexia. Which at the time was not really a very well known or understood illness.

Karen's voice was from another world... And her brother Richard an exquisite arranger... Karen had no lucky with her romantic life, her marriage was a failure and a great pain for her, and this song reflects exactly this... Try incredible songs like Goodbye To Love, Solitaire, This Masquerade, We´ve Only Just Begun, Maybe It's You... So many great songs...

Dereck, great reaction!! The lyrics may come across as a "one night stand" on the surface. But what the song convey's is something much more emotional (and less physical). Many young people in the 70's had only the radio to hear new music. What she's singing is, she fell in love with a song and the artist's "sad guitar". It made her feel a strong connection to the "superstar" singing it on the radio. The chorus, "Don't you remember you told me you love me baby?" is her recalling the line from his song. But in reality, she's in her room, lonely and thinking about his song she can't wait to hear again.

Superstar is about a groupie who, “Long ago”, went to a concert, fell in love with a rock star “before the 2nd show”, had a one night stand and now listens to him on the radio, waiting for him to come back. When the Carpenter’s decided to cover the song, Richard toned it down, to make it better fit the Carpenter’s clean image. Originally titled Groupie (Superstar), he dropped “Groupie” and changed lyrics like “I can hardly wait to sleep with you again” to “I can hardly wait to BE with you again.” Here’s a link to the 1969 original for comparison; ruclips.net/video/86S6upe_GO0/видео.html

The song was originally called "Groupie." The original lyrics said I can't wait to sleep with you again but Richard thought that. Karen at her age, which I believe was 19, was to young and innocent to sing those lyrics. He, therefore, changed it to I can't wait to be with you again.

Just 21 years old here, she was the most fluid & flawless vocalists of all time. Listen to her 2nd stanza 2:45-2:57, noting how she sings softly & strongly, adding various colors to her tone. She sang thru complete the line in one breath! Everything we hear was laid down on first take by the incomparable Karen Carpenter.

Karen had the ability to reproduce her own vocals absolutely pitch perfect every single time...often better than the original studio take and she could do this after ONE take and with no auto-tune (which didn't exist in her day.) She was also considered one of the best drummers of her day. She was a musical genius.
