Holy cow I’m about to do my first balayage touch up and I was freaking out till I saw your video! Thank you so much for the tips ! Definitely feeling more confident ! Thanks !
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my account password. I would love any tricks you can give me
I just wanted to say a huge thank you! I’m in my last semester of cosmetology school and thanks to your RUclips I’ve gotten so much better at color. It was my weakest point but now I’m so much more confident. You’ve taught me more than school has as far as the techniques. I’m far from perfect but thanks to you I’ve grown a ton and hope to someday be as successful as you!
Yes!! I totally agree with you! Actually, we watched your balayage videos in my balayage class at cosmetology school then they told us to try it on our mannequins 😊 I love your videos and your energy. Thanks for helping us all on our journeys.
I’m glad I found you recently! So many people on RUclips have super annoying voices. You are easy on the ears. Thanks for being professional and willing to share your knowledge with us.
GOOD LORD this has changed my LIFE!!! I have SUCH curly, thick, blonde hair and NOBODY (*NOBODY*) has EVER done my hair like correctly OR like this!!!!!! I can do it MYSELF now!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
JAMIE!! Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial!Your enthusiasm is contagious! I used your signature method of foilayage my client's hair turned out absolutely beautiful! My only issue I had to deal with, and struggle with on occasion is this: Clients with thick, long hair...do you have any tried and true methods of getting the hair to process to where it can all be finished at the same time? I staggered my developer from 20 in back to 30 in front but the total application time was almost 2 hours! Maybe I'm just slow and need to get faster at applying product...? Your thoughts?
Thank you so much for reaching out, Gina! It does totally depend on your speed and it sounds like you are doing what I would suggest, dropping the volume! If they have thick long hair, that means you have to take thinner sections which will take much longer. Don't be afraid to rinse out what is done even if you have a half of a head left to process!
I just wanted to tell you that you inspire me so much🙏🏻 im a hairdresser from norway, and i started using your foilage tecnique and im so Happy there is people like you on RUclips to help and inspire other stylists🙏🏻 thank you!
I LOVE this technique! I am more comfortable using foils as I have been doing hair since the early 90s and freehand painting takes a lot of practice to get it right. I used your exact placement and technique recently on a client with a similar base color with amazing balayage results! Foilayage with the conditioner "buffer" zone is genius! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Where have you been all my life I’ve been hairdressing 20 years and seriously you have turned so many light bulbs on in my head The conditioner on the roots is going to be a game changer for me. Thank you thank you thank you 🙏
Your videos are always so helpful, so glad I found you! 👍could you explain the effect that different partings give in balayage. I've heard that diagonal back typically gives more brightness in the back while diagonal forward gives more brightness in front. Is that correct? What other partings do you use for balayage or foilyage? Also, can you explain or show what the difference is between a weaved foilyage vs. A teased balayage. Thank you so much. Loving your videos, I'm in my way to watching all of them.
Hey! Thanks so much for your questions! I'll keep this in mind to create a more in-depth video about this since this is a lot of extra information and may be best for a video. Thanks so much!
I use your channel as a form of continued education! Lol. You're absolutely delightful to watch and I love how informative and explanatory you are!! Been doing hair since 2010, and find myself smiling and nodding and giggling like at some of the things you say like we're in the same salon.. You're such a joy, I just can't help it! Lol!! Anywho, thanks so much for being you!!! :)
Omg this is life changing can't wait to try this in the salon! I feel like using the conditoner is going to be super helpful! I've had the issue before where no matter how much I feather up or tease it still doesn't look as blended as it could so I think this will really help!
Love this! ❤️🌸 I did my first foilayage on myself with one of your foilayage videos on repeat in my bathroom and it turned out amazing!! 😃 and now I’m going to do this refresh video tomorrow. I love how detailed your videos are! And indeed with very dark hair no blending agent needed that is the only thing I will skip, because my hair is really dark and pulls very warm, so I am just going to really extra tease my hair and be really careful in de blending area :) again thank you!!
Love this technique looking forward to trying it out! After being out of the industry for 7 years it’s so so great to have these step by step videos to get inspiration and learn new techniques!! Thank you thank you Jamie you’re just brilliant and such a lovely girl too!! Trudy x
What would the difference be between backcombing conditioner and enlightener vs just a baby light and conditioner and enlightener? Would it’s still result blended?
Loved this tutorial! I'm having such a hard time with the balayage technique cause I feel like I can't get it blended good enough. This video has helped!
All my beautiful sisters and brothers in Jesus Christ of Nazareth.. stop wearing makeup, jewelry and fake hair.. (whichever applies to you).. it is not of God.. here's some scriptures: Genesis 35:4, Hosea 2:13, Jeremiah 4:30, Ezekiel 23:39-49, Zephaniah 1:8, 1 Timothy 2:9-10, 1 Peter 3:3-4, 1 Corinthians 11:5 KJV BIBLE .. "people look a certain way at home but look different when they're outside of their home.. You can look nice and groomed without being extra.. you DON'T need to wear make up, costly array, jewelry, plait your hair, wear wigs, paint nails, paint toes and etc.. you chose to do that for personal reasons.. some people paint over their insecurities with makeup.. and put on wigs for lazy reasons of not wanting to comb their hair or simply self hate.. to cover up what they really look like due to low self esteem.. and some people are conceited and crave for attention from others to boost their ego.. following temporal trends thinking it's cool because everyone else is doing it.. while idolizing their selves.. thinking they're a god/goddess looking for worship and praise from others.. seriously.. instead of adding pride and lust to the flesh.. it would be best to humble yourselves before God and seek/ worship him in spirit and truth.. having confidence in him and not yourselves or materialistic things that can vanish away" .. it's the truth told in love 💖
Really important question!!! I recently got a bayalage in June and I’ve been working outside at a camp all summer. My color is nice but a little faded and not as bright and light as it used to be. Is it possible to go into the salon and get a touch up where I don’t go lighter but get back some of my color?? Super important to know because I do not want to go lighter just get some of the old color back
I love the conditioner tip. Thanks for sharing. I don't like balayage because it takes too long to process with clay lightener and never gets bright enough. I spent 5 hrs on a girl yesterday because I had to go back and foilyage after doing balayage. She had old color on mid-shaft and blonde ends so when I rinsed the clay lightener(40vol) off after 50 minutes and she had orange band around the middle. I knew the toner wouldn't touch it so I went back with foils. Looked better. I am never happy with clay lightener, I guess I'm impatient. Time is money. It works good for virgin hair if they want very subtle highlights. And I definitely like using foils over anything. Again, thanks for the video. Your voice isn't annoying like a lot of other youtubers😆 your nails are pretty too
Jamie, great technique!! I’m definitely going to incorporate this! You have such a way with with how you demonstrate your techniques that I really appreciate. I’m so glad I found you. I’m looking forward to watching all your videos. Thanks Girl💕 By the way where did you get your frames? I’m in love with them and have to have them🌸
Hi, isnt overlapping already bleached hair with bleach when retouching the roots very damaging for the hair? Is there any way to retouch a balayage without touching as much of the light hair already? I'm afraid this will make my blonde hair extremely dry. Thanks!
It totally depends on where you are starting from (how porous the hair is, if there is damage etc) but also making sure you are using something that will rebond the hair like olaplex if the hair is in good enough condition to be lightened again.
Thanks for the great video on the retouch balayage. How can I do this but also do a Grey retouch? Would I do this process then rinse it out, dry it and then do the Grey coverage on the roots afterwards? It’s so confusing.
It depends on how comfortable and fast you are with the foils! If she had grey, I would retouch that first and as it's processing, do the foils. If it takes you longer, you may want to do it in two processes.
I studied hairdressing at a really young age and because of that, I let a few challenges in my life, stray me from that path a bit. I still keep the skils alive and do hair for my family and friends and do not plan on going any further with my career in hairdressing as I have found new opportunities. I still have a huge passion for hairdressing and it shows when I perform the hair services for my family members :) My question is... How long did it take for you to complete this service? I try and keep my times below 2-3hrs TOPS per person. Processing times included.
Hello, thank you for sharing. I have a few question; first how long does it take you to foil the whole head? Second how long does it take you from the beginning of the service to the very end? The reason I am asking it because I used this technique for the first time and it took me close to five hours before my client was styled and ready to go. Last question, I am putting to little hair in the foil so it comes out to subtle, any suggestions or criticism are appreciated. Thank you again.:)
Love how it came out! My hairdresser always tells me she can't make my hair blonde because my natural hair has red undertone color. Idk but I want some blonde ☹️
I've been doing the conditioner technique because I was tired of the hot root sitch.. I even apply it before foiled highlight like a root touch up first that way if there's product build up at the base it prevents the cheetah spots.
ive tried this and for some reason when i do the diagonal back sections on the sides of the head the balayage pieces dont really show up on the top of the head but only if you run your hands through the hair if that makes sense. its like they are up underneath the top layer and they are hidden.
I'm not trying to be rude but this was not easier at all. I need to do this on myself because I can't pay someone to bring my balayage up and I have a lot of growth and I thought this would help but it's entirely too complicated.
Tried your technique for the first time and loved it! Can you do a full head of foils video? Or if you have one add the link under my comment so I can watch it? :)
i just recently found you, i watched this video last night and today i tried this placement twice today on 2 clients! i customized it for each guest of mine and i loved it! i was able to move fast through application and still gave the finish look a lot of brightness in the right places! thank you!
it doesn’t worry you using 30 vol on pre lighted hair? i guess the olaplex really does it’s job well. i worry so much about damage, i’m usually too scared to use anything higher than 15 vol
Alex Cooney As you can see, I'm only feathering it through those pre-lightened ends. I'm not fully saturating and they were pretty warm to begin with. But sometimes I'll use a lower developer if I need to. And it's a 1inch curling iron 😊
Just stumbled upon this while researching new ways to deal with balayage.... as I hate the paddles. Seriously, this was to the point, super informative and this conditioner at the root thing is amazing. I'll be trying this on a client tomorrow, wish me luck!
I'm in cosmetology school and our instructor doesn't teach us how to do this. Your videos have helped me learn so much and I'm feeling confident enough to try these techniques on my clients! I do have one question, what does teasing the hair do for the bayalage? Does it help blend seamlessly?
Hey Mallory McDarment I'm so happy to hear you've learned so much from my videos! Teasing the hair does help with blending. Thank you so much for watching.
I am loving your videos! I have a question thou... Why do you tease the hair first? Thanks so much, I'm getting ready to do root retouch (grey coverage) then color melt silver.
My hairdresser balayage my hair once and then switched to foils because she said if she continues to balayage it, it’ll get lighter and lighter at the ends. Is that true? This video makes me think that’s not the case.
Such a beautiful blonde tones you created. I have one question did you ever use a different level developer, I know you started with a 30 did move up to 40 on the sides and top.
Thanks for reaching out! I do use different developers depending on my desired outcome. Since I'm trying to get a lot of lightness here and her hair is in good condition, I chose those volumes!
Fresh out of beauty school and your videos help me so much! But I do have a question.. how do you approach the “money piece” when they have a shorter side swept bang? I’m the same way? I’m afraid to end up with super bright bang and have it sticking out in a bad way..
Yep! I do it with the same technique. It's all about placement, so maybe you don't go as close to the roots or you leave a bit more hair out in between foils. That will keep it not looking too bright and still have some depth. Hope that helps!
What would your order be if you were tapping in a base color, too? Say, even covering gray? Would you just tease with the base color on there, and use the conditioner?
Holy cow I’m about to do my first balayage touch up and I was freaking out till I saw your video! Thank you so much for the tips ! Definitely feeling more confident ! Thanks !
That makes me so happy to hear! Thanks for watching!
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid lost my account password. I would love any tricks you can give me
I agree, it is one of the best videos I've ever watched!!!
I’m not a hair stylist and I will more than likely never be one. But I’ve watched almost every video and feel like a professional 😂
Thank you so much! I'm thrilled to hear you loved it!
I did this technique on a customer and it came out beautiful. Can you do more video's on hispanic hair?
Thank you Sasha. I'll keep that in mind for a future video!
Yes, please! Our hair is a little difficult to work with sometimes.
I just wanted to say a huge thank you! I’m in my last semester of cosmetology school and thanks to your RUclips I’ve gotten so much better at color. SAME HERE! ....I'm at my third month at school and have learned way much with Jamie than with my teacher 🤷🏻♀️
Yes!! I totally agree with you! Actually, we watched your balayage videos in my balayage class at cosmetology school then they told us to try it on our mannequins 😊
I love your videos and your energy. Thanks for helping us all on our journeys.
A powerful tip, do Not tighten the fold line, your actually pushing the lightener off of the hair!
Wow didn’t know you can use conditioner as a blending agent, very useful tip thanks for the awesome videos!
Thanks so much for watching!
Did you use any kind of conditioner?
Could you do a video on how to do a balayage/foliage for a client who has some grey hair and wants it all covered up? That is a tricky one for me
Savannah Smith That is a great suggestion! I can definitely do that! Thanks for the idea!
YES! That's what I'm struggling with as well!
Yes! Bc adding lightener on top of color to blend you get that band of warmth.
I second that
Savannah Smith yes that’s a great idea! I would really appreciate that too
I’m glad I found you recently! So many people on RUclips have super annoying voices. You are easy on the ears. Thanks for being professional and willing to share your knowledge with us.
Shannon Arellano Oh thank you so much for saying that! I'm glad my voice isn't annoying haha! Thanks for watching!
I like your work
Shannon Arellano lol are you talking about Mandy? 🙉
Shannon Arellano i agree! I can’t stand half of these videos on here bc people have annoying voices!
Ugh I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I LOVE your technique! I’ve told all my coworkers about it. So simple with such a gorgeous outcome.
Courtney Ricker Awe thank you so much for sharing this with your coworkers! I really appreciate it!

I used your technique today and had amazing results thank you so much , just what I needed.

your work is very lovely Hello mam how are you /where are you from /can I your salon in the job 🌱I am from in Mumbai India
Hello, thank you for sharing. I have a few question; first how long does it take you to foil the whole head? Second how long does it take you from the beginning of the service to the very end? Why is the lightener blue in the bowl but white when you apply it to the hair?
It's just how the lightener oxidizes. Thanks for watching!
Love how it came out! My hairdresser always tells me she can't make my hair blonde because my natural hair has red undertone color. Idk but I want some blonde ☹️
Thanks so much for watching!
not true, my hair is a level 5 and i pull like an orange chicken, my hair is currently white it just takes alot of patience and knowledge of toning
Your teeth are beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh the client's hair is nice too-lol😁👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks for the video! I watch them all. You’re very inspiring !
Thank you so much!
Wow, amazing work! What is the client’s natural hair level? Would it work with a level 4/5?
I've been doing the conditioner technique because I was tired of the hot root sitch.. I even apply it before foiled highlight like a root touch up first that way if there's product build up at the base it prevents the cheetah spots.

Hi Nicole! I got it from Cosmoprof :)
ive tried this and for some reason when i do the diagonal back sections on the sides of the head the balayage pieces dont really show up on the top of the head but only if you run your hands through the hair if that makes sense. its like they are up underneath the top layer and they are hidden.

Just stumbled upon this while researching new ways to deal with balayage.... as I hate the paddles. Seriously, this was to the point, super informative and this conditioner at the root thing is amazing. I'll be trying this on a client tomorrow, wish me luck!
So glad you loved it! Thanks for watching!
Wish we could see the front money piece
I'm in cosmetology school and our instructor doesn't teach us how to do this. Your videos have helped me learn so much and I'm feeling confident enough to try these techniques on my clients! I do have one question, what does teasing the hair do for the bayalage? Does it help blend seamlessly?
Hey Mallory McDarment I'm so happy to hear you've learned so much from my videos! Teasing the hair does help with blending. Thank you so much for watching.
Great tutorial! Where did you get the metal blow dry holder? Remodeling my suite in August and this would be perfect!
I got it off Amazon!
I am loving your videos! I have a question thou... Why do you tease the hair first? Thanks so much, I'm getting ready to do root retouch (grey coverage) then color melt silver.
I tease the hair for better blending!
When you do your diagonal side pieces after the hairline, so you tease them or not? Thanks. Amazing technique btw. Xxx
Yes I do!
Omg best explanation of all my touch ups so far! Tysm for doing this!^-^♡
Thanks so much! I'm glad it was helpful!
Could you use a blue conditioner to help with warmth? Also thank you so much for your videos!
This is the most informative step by step foilyage video!. Great job jamie best retouch video on youtube, no ?
Thank you so much! I'm thrilled to hear you loved this video. Thanks for watching!
If the client has dark out grown roots and she needs to retouch them with a light color to blend with the highlight can you still use the conditioner?
My hairdresser balayage my hair once and then switched to foils because she said if she continues to balayage it, it’ll get lighter and lighter at the ends. Is that true? This video makes me think that’s not the case.
Thanks so much! She may be able to get you lighter using the foils!
Are you in Melbourne? I would LOVE to get this done by you.
I'm in California :)
So beautiful! Thank you for sharing!💕
Thank you so much!
Awesome video. I came on here just to watch what I should expect when I retouch my balayage haha.
Thanks so much for watching Susan!
It may help to do a big chunky piece on the sides so that way you have blond in the front going all the way down to the ends? Does that make sense?
Can I ask where is your shop
I'm in Southern California. Thanks for watching!
When doin balayage does any conditioner work? We use tigi color and tigi products on back bar.
Yes! I prefer a light weight conditioner but anything will work!
What would your order be if you were tapping in a base color, too? Say, even covering gray? Would you just tease with the base color on there, and use the conditioner?
I actually share how to do this with a base color in this video: ruclips.net/video/4yi1onMYWrw/видео.html
Lovely!! Excellent technique,Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much Cassandra!
How long does it take you to finish applying the lightener to the whole head? So beautiful!!!
This will usually take about 2 and a half hours!
Great work Jamie. Color came out soft and nice. Neat work also. Really Nice color.

How would you do this with someone who is bleach blonde but my roots have grown in ? I just want to fade my blonde ibt my roots.
I would go to a stylist you trust and ask for a consultation!

I got the answer to one of my questions well
Your dry brush that you use to clean up the possible lines...is it dry or are you dipping that brush in water? I here a tap tap of a glass ... ???
It's a dry brush! I'm wiping off the product on the brush to keep it clean.

I've actually done a video of that before! Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/Uk_zGM5amXM/видео.html
