"I've never seen Earth... I grew up on a station less than 50 light years from the Sol system, but I've never stood on Terran soil or looked up at the blue sky... hell, I've never been TO the Sol system before now. I grew up learning about what seemed to be another blue and green ball in this galaxy that many said was our 'home'. I learned it's history, geography, lunar cycles and the physics that kept it bound to the sun. I learned about the first moon landings and how we colonized it and then Mars... I learned about the discovery of FTL drives and how it made a lifetime journey only a few seconds from point A to B.
"In fact, being here, right now, is such a surreal feeling. I'm floating above the planet that everyone says I should call home, a planet that I've never set foot on. Is this my home? Is this where my heart should yearn to be? I have no answers to those questions, but I do know that without this blue-green ball of dust and water, I would not be here. For that, I thank you, 'home'. I thank you... Earth."

If we do ever achieve intergalactic travel, I imagine the emotions this individual is going though for a digital representation of our planet in a vast space game will probably be the same emotions that an individual who is from somewhere light years away will have when faced with the world in which their species came from.

Perhaps not.... think of the continents of earth now and the way the continent we all came from and its inhabitants are regarded. @cade clark of course thats a lovely thought. I'm just playing devils advocate and pointing out that the human race began in Africa. All the races of men are descendants of those that first migrated from that contienent, but Africa isnt considered by most people as "the homeland" and viewed with nostalgia and affection. The example you gave is true but thats on a very short time-scale in terms of generations.
I'm sorry its a beautiful video, and i was emotional watching it. Now i fear my inability to resist an intellectual excercise or rise to a mental challenge is possibly spoiling it for some people that read my comments. I feel like the Grinch. I apologise if anyones enjoyment of this video is impacted.

My eyes welled as I approached Sol, the home system. All that I had ever known had been born of this sun and wet rock. The violent torrents of typhoons and hurricanes, the winds that flood the trees, the thunderous rumbling of volcanoes, the beautiful song and dance of the starlings in the morning dew. These things, were all born of this ancient rock suspended in space.
I, and everyone else had been born of her. Her great open cathedral was of ourselves, and ourselves of her. We lend everything we have ever done and ever will do, to our sacred rock. She sits, processing gracefully across the expanse of her neighbouring planets.
There she sits. Alone, but crowned in love and beauty for all eternity.

    Great video.
This is exactly what this game is about!
Not many people “get” it, you clearly do.
I remember my first Sol visit, I landed on Mercury because, you know, you can. Then checked out the rings of Saturn, Jupiter’s red spot and finally on to Earth, via the dark side of the moon.
Once you see Earth for the first time, the sunrise, the daylight, the city lights, it really hits you. I went straight to my continent, my country, then over my home town, and just floated there in space for about an hour looking down. Took my breath away.
By the way, I play in VR with the Oculus Rift and my god, it takes it to a whole new level! The difference between looking at a flat image on a screen and a 3D view in VR is HUGE!!!
I physically stood up out of my chair and actually took a step closer to the front of my ship for a better view. AMAZING!

It was such a great moment.
I totally get the flood of emotions.
And it doesn't stop at Earth either...
There's so many terrifyingly romantic and romantically terrifying things in the Elite Dangerous cosmos...
One that always stuck with me is The Crab Nebula Expedition tourist beacon in the Epsilon Indi system. It's locked in orbit of a tiny moon called Mitterand Hollow, which in turn orbits around an Earth-like planet called New Africa. Landing on that moon is extremely tricky, because it (and thus the beacon too) orbit the planet at a truly insane velocity. It is however most certainly worth the trouble. You'll see why when you get there.
As a huge fan of Alien, I must say I also fancied running into a station called Ridley Scott (in the Zaonce system)...
Right now I'm off to find me a space-whale I saw in my Codex.

I started playing Elite when it first came out in 1984. I was just a little kid then, wrestling the controls on my Apply II+ trying to fight pirates and land on a station before I could afford a docking computer. (Trust me! I was hard back then on just a keyboard!) But even though it was just wireframe graphics I could imaging what flying through the cosmos would really look like and often day dreamed of piloting a Cobra Mk III for real, visiting new worlds and seeing the grandeur of the universe.
In 2016, in a fit of nostalgia, I started searching the internet for remakes of games I played as a kid. That is when I found Elite: Dangerous. The game looked how I imaged it back as a young boy and more! I got my permit to Sol a year later. When I first visited Earth I had a similar experience hovering over my home of Alaska. Years earlier I had returned to Alaska for real after living away from home. As the plane broke through the clouds my home city came into view framed by a glittering sea and mountains bathed in the evening glow of the setting sun. It was an emotional moment after having been gone for so long to come home to my home. Hovering over Alaska in-game brought back that memory, and without the necessity of being on a plane that had to land to keep a schedule, in the game I was able to stay and savor the moment.
I am again living far from my home, both in-game and in real life. But I plan to return home again, in-game and in real life. I do not regret my departure and what I have experienced, learned, and given in my travels from my home. But there is something deeply grounding, deeply connecting, about returning to our home.
Thanks for sharing your moment, Kolo!

But it's this video that has actually convinced me to go ahead and actually buy it. There's something about your reaction upon finally being able to return from the vast expanse of space to something so familiar and close to all mankind that resonates with me on a certain level I can't quite put a name to. It seems so genuine, to the point that I could actually envision some deep-space explorer in the far future returning from the vast expanse of the cosmos to the cradle of all mankind, and having almost the same reaction to seeing even just the sun for the first time in decades; the joy and awe in witnessing the sunrise over _home_
So, I figure that it's time I set out on my own journey into that great abyss and start blazing my own trail, and I thank you for giving me the inspiration to do so.
EDIT: On a less serious note, I find it absolutely hilarious that the first thing that happens upon you being promoted to a petty officer in the Federal Navy and getting security access to visit the birthplace of humanity... is that you crash into another ship the size of an oil tanker on your way out of the station. Knowing my luck, though, the same thing will happen to me within 5 minutes of starting the game.

Lovely to see such excitement from a fellow ginger (well I used to be :D). My strategy for a Sol permit was this :- Federal Combat missions only in 70 Ophiuchi , Altair and Bhritzameno with a tricked out Vulture (best bang and armour for buck) got me lots of cash and a Sol permit in no time. :) Fight lots of 'Harmless' missions first then as you gain dogfight experience go for one or two levels above yours. A bit of a hack, if you're trouble say down to 25% ship damage, hit the reset button on your pc to restart, jump to the nearest system with a station and repair and have another go. If you can't move reboot your ship and it should enable the jump systems. You're welcome! :)

Not gonna lie this just randomly popped up in my recommended but man alive did it hit me with such a surreal feeling of nostalgia... took me back to 6 years ago when I first journeyed back to Sol after acquiring my permit. Made me remember the extremely surreal experience of seeing everything that we are, just there, albeit slightly different but immediately recognizable.

coming home after a journey to the supermassive black hole in the middle of our galaxy even if its just a bigger spaceport is an immense relief.

I can totally relate. I finally got my Sol permit and getting to visit the home was nothing short of a awe inspiring experience. If you don't play the game you can't appreciate it. For the non-players - it takes a good long while to earn your permit to visit home. But it's worth the wait!

Moments like this is why many of us started a love affair back in 1984 with the fickle beast that is Elite. Which reminds me.....I really need to get around to unlocking my Sol permit.

Ain’t weird to be emotional about it. Every spacer in every piece of fiction dreams about seeing home when they can’t normally see home.

Wow.... what a video, you have literally made me want to get back in the cockpit of Elite Dangerous.... I haven't played it for months and I am not far from Sagittarius A, you have given me the enthusiasm to journey back to Sol and do exactly what you did here....Thank you....
    Awesome video

Just clicking around and I find this video. The utter joy about the sound of the sun was what kept me watching the rest of the video. Definitely need to check out some more videos here.

This is adorable. I just picked up playing again after a couple years away once I got a flight stick setup and finally got my Corvette. I was a little emotional too so no, it's not weird to be emotionally invested in something that brings you joy regardless of what it is.

That was bizarrely and satisfyingly emotional to watch. My ship is way out toward the core and suddenly I wanna fly back and hover over the south central U.S.

From the joyfull beginning till that end ... just the "look guys, We are home" with that much feels in your voice ... and the view ... and the music.
Thanks for the feelings and i whish you the best for your next explorations.
i just buyed the game and hope i'll see you play it on your Twitch channel too.

Your excitement and elation were palpable... this is one of the best Elite Dangerous vids I've viewed so far! I'm less than two hundred hours in and loving every second... other than getting interdicted twice. I'm still in the Asellus Primus system in my Sidewinder with 100 million, I'm hoping to get into exploration.
I've seen Sol on the charts and found out that it is invite only and no landing available. Shame... heartbreaking news for a Terran.

It's wonderful getting to see your reaction! I felt much the same way in my first visit to Sol. I ended up spending a full day there just exploring and sightseeing. Went back later for another tour, and brought the wife via multicrew (in VR, no less) to show her the sights.
I need to go back at some point. After two tours, I never got further out than Pluto, and there's a bunch of other stuff further out. BTW, there's a crashed Anaconda on Charon. I stumbled across it by chance.

That's one of the things that helps make this game awesome. You realize how tiny and insignificant our precious existence is in the face of the galaxy(never mind the universe which is filled with billions maybe trillions of galaxies).

I had the same reaction when I arrived to Earth. I saw the sol permit in the federation branch and thought “that, is going to be mine” and through long hours of grinding I finally obtained my permit and dropped everything I was doing and flew over there. I think as well I took a similar shot of the sunrise there, it was beautiful.

    Traveling in a tiny pc-ship,
    through a virtual limitless space,
the sunshines at the curve edge
an angel rising up from starts
    found it here,
    during the longest Sol day.

Congratulations on getting the Sol permit. This was the only faction thing I really worked for and I was damn emotional when I saw HOME for the first time! Seen the Earth in countless games, videos and what not, but the feeling of getting access to it ... you know, working for a way to get back home, and see it in Elite ... made all the efforts worth that moment!
Your reaction brought all those feelings rushing back! Thanks for sharing it with us.
