Clean Clogged Pressurized Breville Portafilter Basket

Many espresso machines have pressurized portafilter baskets, like Breville, Delonghi, Starbucks or Saeco. They can get clogged and not allow coffee to flow through. This video shows a way to clean the baskets using oven cleaner or drain cleaner. These cleaners use sodium hydroxide, a powerful cleaner, which will dissolve coffee residue. Be careful when using these cleaners which can burn skin and irritate lungs - wear rubber gloves, use outside if possible and use eye protection.

I followed you advice but since à I didn’t want to wait overnight I sprayed the filter with oven cleaner and put it right back to it’s place. Worked instantly. I rinsed it then filled the tank with vinegar and water and let the whole tank go trough. Worked perfectly.

Managed to clean mine with boiling the basket in a solution of fresh water, course salt and vinegar ( about 1/3rd vinegar and 2/3rds water) boil for 20 min and does the same job, without toxic chemicals

It’s easier to just tap out the pressed cap gently with a hammer or mallet upside down, the little cap pops out and you can just rinse it out and press it back in 👍🏻
