    If you don't have a drill bit to make a hole likes what Tom did professionally, you can also do that by hammering a nail through. But to make the job easier, a smaller diameter nail should be used first, then making the hole bigger by using a bigger diameter one. Placing the cup on a piece of wood with the bowl facing upwards, then hammer the nail down (This is to prevent the cup from being dented if bowl facing downwards) and any protruding burrs outside the bowl can be smoothed out easily by using a simple file or a dremel (if you have one).

    Looks like there is pressure being built up in the dual wall again. You can tell since the flow diverts to the sides rather than straight downwards like at the start. So I think a larger hole is better.

    0:24 you can also just drill the first type of basket, just dont go too deep so you dont damage the inside filter holes. and btw. its nice that you notice to use personal protection equipment, but when drilling, never ever use gloves, as they might get stuck in the drill!

  • @ajmckay2

    Awesome idea! I think it's important to point out that once you do this you must grind fine and you cannot use pre ground coffee anymore. For this reason I opted to purchase a non pressurized basket (and a good grinder) like the one you showed. That way if I need to use a coarser grind sometime I'm able to.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  2 года назад +5

      Hello AJ, you are definitely right! If you depressurize the filter, then you have to grind finer.
      I’d mainly recommend doing this, if you have extra baskets to experiment with, or don’t want to wait for a new non-pressurized one to arrive.
      Cheers, ☕️

    Hi Tom! I follow your channel from southern Italy, and I love your videos. A question: according to you why is so important to make basket unpressurized? (Or using not prezzurized basket) Because i use both of two, but sometimes seems not to be differences. Sorry for my english, and thank you so much

  • @wbwright79
    @wbwright79 2 года назад

    the pressurized basket can often deliver more crema. for my dual-wall basket, i ended up grabbing an acetylene torch and burning the stuck grounds out. it mostly melte out the mess, and you can hear it and see it coming out from the openings. rinse and repeat about 3-4 times until you no longer hear the old grounds melting any longer. bye the way, if you don't clean out the junk then you will eventually destroy the pump.

      Thanks for your feedback and tips! Everyone's taste is different, so if you prefer the pressurized baskets for your coffee, then that's good too! Thanks for your great video on changing the pump on the Dedica by the way. It took the uneasiness away for me to open up my machine. 👍

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Год назад

      Well, the larger the bit, the more the tip is tapered, and then you'd run into the inner basket part with the drill bit tip, before piercing the basket with the outer radius of the drill bit.

    Hi Tom. I have a separate question that i was hoping you may be able to help us with.
    We have an older EC680 that, without any modifications, we were so happy with that we bought a second..., as a kitchen colour change...; the problem we have is that with identical grinds on fresh roasted beans, the newer EC685 is very poor by comparison. We are using identical medium heat, and same water hardness, and same water volume, as we set from straight water flow.., and the newer 685 is never as good, and has never been as good. Any thoughts ? Rgds, Mark

      Hey Mark, well that's a tough one. I have a 5 year old EC680, and a newer EC685. I measured their compressions. The newer machine had a max of 11 bars, and the old one maxed out at 7 bar. Perhaps you got used to extractions at a lower pressure? Otherwise, maybe the new machine is defective?

      Thanks so much for following up.
      Delonghi replaced the machine with new, however was identical in performance to the one I was complaint about..., so we bought another product. We still have the other older ec680 ( I think that's the model ), which continues to be great.
      Maybe they changed the pump or tubing / water flow in the ec685..., but I really don't know.

    Hello Tom. My double basket seems to not fit very tightly. It sometimes stays into the machine when I unscrew the portafilter, and when I'm trying to clean it by giving it a slight hit it falls off. Is this is a deal breaker? Should I sent the machine back? It's a hassle. Do you think If I just buy another basket or portafilter it would be better?

      I think the coffe let some gap in the container so I dont think it can give you the necessary 7+ bar pressure.

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner I tried and the coffee now comes with a very bright shallow crema on top. Tastes better than stock, very smooth. I think the crema texture is what needs tweaking now. I use Lavazza Rossa, temperature on High, water hardness Medium with the stock handle, except the black plastic from the inside (nipples) are removed. Any recommendations to get a better, thicker crema? I buy coffee from my local coffee shop, the owner grinds it freshly so what should I ask for next time?

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  2 года назад +1

      @@deyoviC Well, the next step would be to get your own grinder so that you can grind on demand. Timing is paramount, since grounds lose their freshness quickly. Your local roaster will provide much better crema than Lavazza, since it is the CO2 escaping, which is creating the crema. On old supermarket beans, the CO2 has already escaped.

    Hello! Helpful video! Related to the coffee machine EC685, the machine is newly bought yet for single shot and double shot, it barely produces any coffee and stops after 3-5 sec max. Is it due to grind size or is there something wrong with the filter?

    A mask for drilling a small hole into a sheet metal? Sorry, glasses ok. Can make sense, gloves not so much. You don't wear gloves when handling power tools. But a dust protection mask? Really not nessecary. Even for the deburring afterwards this is overkill.
    You also have to consider that protection also disturbs and can interfere with your vision thus an accident is more likely to happen especially if the person is unskilled
