Factorio - How to design sexy blocks (v2)

- It would seem my original description (below) was prescient. Version 1 was not my finest work, version 2 is better. Who would have thought that the solution was timelapsing? Its not like I have much experience in the field. On some occasions it feels like I have about 2 brain cells keeping each other company.
Jokes aside, if you experienced any discomfort from the original video I am truly sorry. I like to think I learn from my mistakes and I will do my utmost to make sure this kind of the thing doesn't happen again.
On with the original description from version 1
This one has been painful. This is the third script I have written to cover the subject and second video I have made. The first one was average, this one is better, I guess I will decide in time whether to take it on a third/fourth time.
Anyway, this is a short video detailing the different ways to lay out factories, their advantages and disadvantages, and how to approach the design of big sexy blocks. Or is at least this is how I approach it. How you do so is completely up to you (that is a challenge by the way, maybe also a bit of a taunt)
Enjoy Игры
My god, a factorio guide youtuber that can talk in full sentences that explain their full thought process. How can this be?!
Damn shade thrown at Trupen
@@followingtheroe1952 whatever trupen does is not a guide.
And it's not a damn college course on some specialized circuit setup that he doesn't even fully remember. (nilaus)
Lol I think this all the time. Like I love Trupen, or Nilaus, but sheesh they are long winded.
@@SoylentGamerdamn 😂
Going from someone who just makes what I need to make to progress to a stage where I want things to look good is such an eye opening experience
I'm so attracted to perfect symmetry, squares, blocks that fit neatly together and balance in everything. But every guide or tutorial or widely available blueprint I've seen makes these ungodly deep long rectangle branches of inconsistent length off a typically unbalanced, non-symmetrical main bus. Then I found you. I've never been so giddy. I think I love you.
Welcome to the channel
Just discovered your channel and now watching every of your videos. Your factories have style and character.
Thank you for your contect! :)
My pleasure buddy, I hope you enjoy it all!!
Thank you so much. I really enjoy hearing the thought process behind your designs. Really helps me organize my own. Quality content.
One of the best block design resources I've found.
This video really helped woth my builds and how to solve some production problems. Thanks man!
Great video! I don't know if I'll be able to fully replicate what you've done, but I found it inspiring. Love the way that you approached your explanation.
This is SO next level from factorio guides, thank uou!!
Thank you for this. It really helped me refine my builds.
This is extremely useful and well explained as my base build is very chaotic. Although I think it is fun just muddling through on my own without using other people's blueprint designs. But at the same time it's great to get new ideas from others and as the game can get so complex it may be the way to go.
You deserve more recognition for the quality of your content
Cheers, that is very kind. I sometimes think I was late to the party and by the time I arrived everyone had already formed their little gangs.
I'm not done yet though
New DLC might change things up also
Honestly, this is why I love the 'inserter throughput' mod. It shows me a dynamic amount that an inserter can move. Things that change the number are things like inserter stack size research or if you are moving from belt or from the inventory, which is faster.
I love these vids that help me figure out ways to scratch that ocd itch
An alternative layout for 2-fluid chem plants : Offset every other row by 1 tile. When you do that, the inputs for one ingredient line up, and the other two ingredients take the other two tiles in between. Takes 1 set of underground pipes per chem plamt.
Damn the intro was real smooth
My favourite gear setup is:
ASSEMBLER
INSERTERS
INPUT-BELT
OUTPUT-BELT
INPUT-BELT
INSERTERS
ASSEMBLERS
This works well because of the ratio. (The ratio changes slightly with efficiency modules, but it's still > 1 input per output.)
This has some benefits: You can tile this sort of thing as much as you want,It's reasonably easy to feed and retrieve, it's easy to get right, and since your long hand assemblers go to the middle belt, and you eat more than you spit out (as opposed to say, wires) it all works out.
Your checklist at the end is great.
I didn't get what you meant about the science blocks though, and the reversible belt directions.
Alright. My thoughts on this.
My first question was which setup is he talking about right now? There are 3 on the screen, but nothing visual to indicate which exact one he is talking about.
I can kinda follow the context clues to understand, but it’s a bit hard to figure it out at times.
The part where you talked about the 3 input fixed that issue, and you used more visual indicators in the rest of the video.
Good work on this one. The very neat ways you removed stuff made the video more interesting.
Thank you for the compliments. I accept the criticisms, nothing is ever perfect. I'm not making it again!!
Say sexy blocks in factorio and no one baTts an eye
Say sexy blocks in Minecraft and SOCIETY, SOCIETY GOES MAD
Highly underrated video
I delude myself into thinking that this is the case for my whole channel
Awesome video ❤
One space can be saved in the side output blueprints presented at times like 4:40 by placing the inserters at opposite edges of the assembly machine, and rotating the belt during the middle tile.
Arrows represent belts. + Represents Inserters. _ is empty.

You may only have two braincells but at least you can form a synapse. There are some people who would do well to have a synapse.
What great content. Thank you! Unrelated question, do you have a list of your preferred mods somewhere?
Was there something specific you had in mind? I use a number of mods, some follow me everywhere, some just get pulled out for a specific situation. It really depends what you are looking to achieve.
@@theotherbigfoot Generally quality of life mods. Helmod is great which you mentioned, I love that one. There's something you had in your inventory at 10:41 in the video, a colourful icon on the far top right next to the gun icon. What is that?
@@SarelvdWalt That is a mod called 'color coding'. It has a whole host of different coloured things. Walls, concrete, lights.
One of the best QoL mods that I use is called 'what is it really used for'. It shows all the places where a particular thing will go or come from. Put an iron gear into it and it will show all the ways an iron gear can be made (maybe not useful in vanilla) and the places an iron gear needs to go. Starting a new set of mods with a new set of materials I've never used before, this thing is absolutely priceless.
@@theotherbigfoot Ah that is fantastic, thanks for the info. Appreciate it. Cheers :)
Sexy Blocks /w Beacons would be awsome
why don't you turn on the logistics mode in helmod so that it shows you how much of a belt something will take up or whatever
I know nothing about effectivenes of these patterns... But they are sooo sexxy.
Thank you for the stuff!
Hi, would it be possible to add time stamps or chapters? It would make browsing this video a whole easier :)
Perfekt video thanks
No. Only train2train direct insertion is ok. :)
Nice!!
I like your guides, but they're hard to find on your channel. Could you put them in a playlist?
Done
Ah! Hm, this feels denser. Though, I don't remember the V1 version off the top of my head.
v1 is worth forgetting. I'm a happier bunny now it has been consigned to the youtube dustbin
@@theotherbigfoot Them widgets though, holy crap I like them. A lot.
@@eddsson Me too
1:30 you do realize your belts are flowing backwards right? might want to get that checked out
The arrows do not align with the movement of the belt that we perceive. This looks like it may be an aspect of speeding up the video, much like looking at a spinning wheel that looks like it is going backwards at a certain speed.
Or the footage was reversed.
the rewind on the animation confused me for a bit, but then I realized why you did it. I think it would be fine to have bots make it
This wasn't rewound. It was timelapsed. Similar to when the wheel of a car spins quickly and looks like it is spinning backwards.
@@theotherbigfoot oh, interesting the rotoscope effect is playing aerious tricks
@@sakesaurus It isn't the first time I've noticed it in one of my timelapse videos.
Good to know the correct specific term though, you aren't the first to point this out, now at least I have the correct verbiage to reply with!!
@@theotherbigfoot i meant serious. But aerious sounds like another bookworm word XD
@@theotherbigfoot and yes. You're welcome
it's so increddibly offputting the belts run backwards .. that and the volume is way too low
that aside .. great video, thx m8
So... I take it, belt weaving is not sexy then? :P
If by belt weaving you mean running two belts one under the other so that they occupy the same tile width, well, I mean, me personally, I really really hate that. I would rather rip down my entire factory and start again than do that.
Some might say I have pretty extreme opinions when it comes to factorio. And they would be right.
Can you do this for Seablock?
Oof, I'd have to learn seablock first
6:15, good luck powering the right one without Substations
Is there something wrong with the standard power poles?
@@theotherbigfoot just to make it clear, I mean the right one visible from 5:55 to 6:18
nothing wrong with it but its radius is only 2, steel ones is 3 but to reach the red inserters from behind the chemical plant you would need at least 4 range in your configuration. In your build its possible to make space for power poles to fit in the middle so its just if you try it exactly like that without free space. I like your layout ideas and want to try some so thanks a lot for making this :)
@@ataarono I meant the steel ones, my bad, I forget the wooden ones exist I hate them so much.
I see your point though. What I generally do is bury the power pole in the conveyor belt in a place that isn't in the way of an inserter. Not the most elegant of solutions but it at least works. I care more about the positioning of the chem plants and conveyors and pipes etc than I do about the power.
No worries dude, thanks for tuning in. More is coming. More is always coming...
I really like the thought process you employ to design your blocks. I just wish you could share some save games so I could study those designs; I find it a bit difficult to follow the process and the designs on video.
All the save games are in the video descriptions for the timelapses. Have at it
why your belts are movig backwards?
They aren't. I think it's similar to the effect of a car wheel spinning quickly where it looks like it is going backwards.
>using belts instead of transport drones
why?
There are many ways but I always end up spaghetti.
I wish we have some blueprints for this 😢
you know, you said we should also try to come up with our own designs, but i think my designs would make you angry.. have you considered stuff like belt weaving, 2 belts in 1 using 2 different tiers of underground. or, in some designs when i neeed to output on the ending side of the input i will put the input on the inner sdie of a belt, and have the inserters both place and take from the same belt, so the output is on that very same belt, then using the underground trick to only take out of one side of the belt. i like making people shutter with the ideas of putting inputs and outputs on the same belts using weird mechanics. FOR EXAMPLE. using logic to only request the exact amount of input your factories will need. so that you can just put the output on the same belt. and let it run :) HOPING nothing makes its way through and mixes with output.
I love the idea that you are f*cking with the perceived wisdom, doing things that other people aren't doing and finding your own path.
But yes, your designs make me angry.
v2?
v1 gave a few people headaches, someone warned me about epilepsy. It didn't sit comfortably with me so I've redone it
@@theotherbigfoot ahhh, smart. Yeah I don't think I would be a very good youtube, glad you put in the consideration!
@@nickwilson4539 I want this collection of youtube videos I am building to be something I am proud of, something I consider to be conclusive on the topics I choose to cover. If a video is unwatchable then that is a problem I need to sort.
This isn't the first time I have redone a video and it won't be the last, there are a couple others that are already on my list.
I know when it is right, v2 is right, v1 was wrong.
you dont need to use both inputs for single input chemical plant recipes
I know, I just like doing it that way
where is the secret way of inserting 4 items into an assembly machine in one side? (figured it out)
I'm guessing you are using two inserters with a conveyor belt between them, but why limit yourself to just one side? There are a lot of ways to arrange a 4 input 1 output. The reason I didn't cover them is because they aren't critical for vanilla factories.
to create somthing like this ruclips.net/video/Xiv_QlvcyCk/видео.html i am not sure why is it so dark but this is what I could do
@@guszti014 That is freaking cool. Well, there are 16 too many beacons for my liking (!!) but the setup is awesome. What recipe is this for?
@@theotherbigfoot i didn't set any recipe yet, but flying robot frames can be used or lds which needs a lot of copper so u could use 2 belt off copper and the beacons were put there to show future upgardeablity or a lab setup
Now do it for py mods
that accent. holy shit
