as the legend goes....george harrison said to jimmy...zeppelin should have a ballad in its repertoire...jimmy went on to write the rain song.....

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 7 месяцев назад +2

Harrison may have said it.......but it still makes no sense, because by the time this song was written, Plant & Page had already written AT LEAST SEVERAL ballads. Here ya go: Led Zeppelin 1: "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", Led Zeppelin ll: "Thank You", "What Is and What Should Never Be", AND "Ramble On". Led Zeppelin lll: "Tangerine", and "That's the Way" ..........ALL of these songs clearly qualify as ballads, and that's just off of their first 3 studio albums. There may be yet a couple more that I can't think of at the moment, and be that as it may, "The Rain Song" finally appeared on their FIFTH studio album: "Houses of the Holy". So even if the story is true about Harrison telling Page "You should have a ballad in your repertoire"........it still makes no sense. It's like telling Henry Ford after decades of Ford auto production that included the Model T and Model A: "You should build a car that most people can afford". ( Henry Ford was perhaps THE VERY FIRST American auto maker to build models on an assembly line that didn't cost a King's ransom. Before that, most if not all automobiles produced in America were very expensive, and only the rich could afford them.)@@davidgreene7676

@@howabouthetruth2157 Harrison was a bit of an A-hole,sometimes(rest his soul)..............perfect response by Page .He wrote it with a descending chromatic progression as did ''Something'' by the Beatles.I believe ,though, Harrison said'' You should write a proper ballad''.I may be wrong.

There are ZERO people that can now or will ever match Jimmy Page's phrasing. UN-TOUCHABLE ! I've been playing guitar my whole life, been a guitar instructor for 16 years, also had a decent music career and still write song now, but never will I be able to come close to the master. NO ONE ever will. Jimmy Page is a legend, and will never be matched. Ever. He was my favourite guitar player when I was 5 years old, and he's still my favourite guitar player to this day. I wish I could write like that. Learning one of Jimmy's songs is one thing... but to have written it shows what a musical genius he really is. Page and Plant were a magical force, backed up my more magic from John P. Jones and Bonzo . all Masters and legends.

Many artists of the 70's were tasting LSD
thats probably why such creative music & lyric's were formed in that era
folk just seemed to have so much to say in their music
America are another good example, the lyric's in some of their songs are bizarre to say the least. Jim Morrison & Co were the same. Maybe the free & easy innocent lifestyle back then contributed allot as well, definitely a most memorable era in music. allot of famous artists of the 70's also had pretty good bible knowledge, & it subtlety showed in their lyric's. Iron Maiden are one example.

Some 10 years ago I was so enamored of this song I figured out the tuning and learned to play the guitar part. It is not only a real handful to play completely but a fascinating song. It is for me Jimmy Page’s finest writing and playing along with Black Mountain Side for many similar reasons. No other instrument could make these sounds harmonically and rhythmically. They are uniquely guitar pieces and uniquely Jimmy Page.

Me too Brother. Only I learned this song back around 1989 ( in the correct open tuning ) and I play and sing it at the same time. You are correct when you say "it's a handful to play".........and even harder to sing it at the same time. But I've been nailing it for years now, vocals and all. With a high quality acoustic guitar, this song is downright majestic. Back when I was professionally gigging all over east/central Florida, I used to mesmerize my audiences with this one ( and others as well, but this was the mac daddy of em all. ) To this day, I've never seen anyone else play AND sing this song at the same time.

@@fernandovega5722 I agree, but it’s originality is perhaps more of a stylistic and structural one. Each section has more of a direct association with a specific genre, so it’s just easier for me to pin down (speaking as a lifelong queen devotee). This is not detracting from bohemian which was unquestioningly revolutionary, and probably much more impactful on the industry. Led Zeppelin just every once in a while go places where I am not sure where they ever came from. Rain song is a true, holistic and raw vibe. It really is what it proposes to be and it creates the space that it’s more formally about, without straying from the primal experience of it.

Frank Piot Art is always about self interpretation... There's a line in it around the end that says something, "upon us all, upon us all, a little rain must fall." My thoughts, it's about the sad and not so good times that we all have to go through. It's a beautiful song because it's not meant to be sad. It's a reminder that even though we go through the hard times, there will always be times we cherish. The line, "But I know, that I love you so," says it all... I mean it's just a little rain 😏

It was so awesome to grow up in the 70's. We did have the BEST music 🎶 in history. Jimmy plays this song easier than most people tie their shoes. The notes just easily flow from his fingers to the strings. I close my eyes 👀 relax and listen to wipe away the stress of the day😌. The kids today don't understand, even if we are 55, 60, 65, or even 70 plus we know how to ROCK. They didn't invent rock n' roll, it's an entity all in itself that lives on through generations 😍

I’m not sure about this conversation, but it seems to me that some here have a problem with the new generation and live in the past. But who gave birth to this generation ? Who educated them. Who where by their side to convey the good values. Who protected them against the furious predation of their attention by the big names of the Silicon Valley. More, who created those social platforms and meticulously studied how to grab and maintain hold on the kid’s attention. A young generation is nothing less than the product of the preceding generation now grown adults.
As to the attention span, especially in the practice of music I see no less capacity for concentration in the young than in the adults (modulo the age difference). But I don’t see what those subjects have to do with rock’n’roll…
Subsidiary questions: how many of you shut down their phone or tablet or tv two hours before going to bed and grab a book ? How many of you read more than 10 books a year front to back ? How many of you spend less than 2 hours (which is about 1/5th of the free time) on phone/tablet/computer during their free time ?

What's there to say? Lol, the mighty, MIGHTY Zeppelin!!!! That is sheer genius. I remember when I first heard that song, I was around fifteen or sixteen and I was on a plane heading to the Caribbean the skies were so blue and my God this sound came in and I literally wept from the beauty that I was experiencing. That music, the blue so beautiful of the sky the clouds and the rays of the sun. I was in Nirvana at that moment in time. I always wonder what would it be like to watch Mozart sit down right in the front row of that stage while theyre doing this song like this, what would be his emotions? What would he think? It would be so interesting to me to know. This song is gorgeous one of their absolute best in my opinion

    LYRICS:
It is the springtime of my loving
The second season I am to know
You are the sunlight in my growing
So little warmth I've felt before
It isn't hard to feel me glowing
I watched the fire that grew so low, oh
It is the summer of my smiles
Flee from me, keepers of the gloom
Speak to me only with your eyes
It is to you, I give this tune
Ain't so hard to recognize, oh
These things are clear to all from time to time, ooh
    Oh, oh
    Oh
    Talk, talk, talk, talk
Hey, I felt the coldness of my winter
I never thought it would ever go
I cursed the gloom that set upon us, 'pon us, 'pon us
But I know that I love you so
    Oh, but I know
    That I love you so
These are the seasons of emotion
And like the wind, they rise and fall
This is the wonder of devotion
    I see the torch
    We all must hold
This is the mystery of the quotient, quotient
Upon us all, upon us all, a little rain must fall
Just a little rain, oh, yeah
    Oh, ooh, yeah-yeah-yeah
