    When we moved into our new house, I went around and removed all the water restrictors out of every faucet and shower heads. It litterly felt like it doubled the pressure and flow. To my amazement, the water going to our washing machine was also restricted! Once i removed it, our washing machine takes less time to fill it up! I haven't figured out if our toilet has a restrictor ,but one of these days, I'm going to dig into it and find out. Water restrictors are just plain ridiculous!!

    I have a good one for you.. bought my house 3 years ago, had brand new water heater installed. Started having issues with hot water in both showers, ended up replacing the moen cart in one of two bathrooms - no fix. Few days later hot water was back fine. Fast forward over three years, there would be times I randomly lose hot water in shower head only for days then it comes back. I would have to let water get hot in tub switch back to shower for a few minutes then cold again. Well I’m getting ready to rent, and the issue popped back up a few days ago. Want to fix for renter.. I had hot water in both bathroom faucets, and tub but not the shower heads. I changed BOTH moen cartridges in both showers, and now I only get Luke warm water in the sinks tubs AND shower. Still have scalding hot water in kitchen. Thermostat in water heater is set to 135. So confused because it does this and then is fine for months if I don’t do anything.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад

      It sounds like you have pressure balance valves in your tub and showers and you need to replace the cartridges. I would call Moen and they might give you new cartridges. In a pressure balance valve there is a piston that can get stuck. If you had a new Moen cartridge in your hand and shook it, it would chatter. That’s telling you it’s working. If you pull out the old cartridge and it’s doesn’t chatter or move freely, then it’s gone bad. I hope this helps. Moen is a good faucet but some water can affect the pressure balance valves.

    What is the easiest way to remove a recessed aerator that has been in the bathroom faucets for years?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад +1

      Maddie Renee, is there any part of the aerator that is exposed so you can use pliers to screw it off? There is a fairly new tool that is used for commercial aerators that might possibly remove it. The longer it’s been on the faucet, the harder it is to get off. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

    Perfect video - clear, concise, no unhelpful details, no wasted time. I've loved your channel since day one. One question: you didn't mention the pipes. Is that bc the scale and other detritus will always clog up the filters long before the pipes start to constrict the flow?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад

      @kenberian4863, if you have old galvanized pipes, you’re going to get rust sediment. If it’s copper or plastic pipe coming from the city main, you shouldn’t have sediment. A lot of sediment comes from the water heater caused from the deteriorating magnesium rod or the lime scale by heating the water. A water softener or filter will also help filter the cold water.

    How about the pressure tank, can you add air to them to make you get more pressure thru out the house?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад

      @tanyahagg6338, the well pressure tank is designed to satisfy the well. That means, the larger the tank, the longer the pump runs. When you add more pressure to the tank, it decreases the volume of the tank. You can change the pressure on a bladder tank. Turn the well pump off, drain the tank completely, check the pressure at the snifter valve at the top of the tank. You don’t want the pressure to be over 60 lbs. Readjust the pressure switch. The large spring on the pressure switch needs to be set to turn off at 60 lbs. Do not touch the small spring at all. This might get you more pressure. The pump is what gives you volume. You want volume over pressure.

    Hi Jim. My problem is the hot water in my shower stops after a few minutes. I have hot water everywhere else. I took off the shower sprayer and ran the water. The hot water doesn't come out the faucet either. How can I fix this?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад

      Debbie T, I think you have a pressure balance tub shower valve and it could be the piston inside the cartridge that is not working right. You need to replace the whole cartridge. Either you can change the cartridge or hire someone to do it. Make sure you give the person enough info, like a picture of the face of the shower valve, so the plumber can bring the part with him.

      @titusflavius9566, your new faucet has a water saver device in it. Turn both angle stops down equally to the flow that you desire on the spout.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад +1

      @jrezaawfollett, the easiest thing is to put in a pump with a larger horse power motor. Adding air to the pressure tank or increasing the pressure on the air switch does not work.

    After the Snowmageddon here in Texas in February 2021, I have EXTREMELY low hot water flow throughout the entire house--bathroom and kitchen. The cold water side has normal pressure. It is a natural gas hot water heater. Being a senior citizen with little money, I'm looking for a budget friendly solution to this issue. I hope you have some ideas.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад +1

      @BlueSkyeHost, first thing you should do, or have someone do, is to check the inlet supply pipe and outlet supply pipe on top of the heater and see if one is rusted shut. If it is rusted, just clean the rust out with a bladed screwdriver. Also check the inlet pipe shutoff valve on top of the heater to make sure it is fully opened.

      Sorry about not getting back to your question sooner. It’s probably your faucet aerators that are plugged. Whenever you turn off the main water valve, turn it back on SLOWLY. Do that for any water valve in your house.

  • @56Spookdog
    @56Spookdog Год назад

    Hi Jim I asked this before but maybe you thought I was being a wise guy, I wasn’t. I need to hook up the water dispenser on my fridge the line has to run behind the oven is it safe to use pex if so should it be in a conduit as a safety measure? A question I didn’t ask at some point I’m going to forced to go to a low flow toilet is there a way to avoid what other people I know have to avoid backups by adding gallons of water to flush once or twice a day?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад

      @56Spookdog, you can buy a 1/4” braided stainless tubing about 15 feet long. That is what I would recommend if you are going behind the oven. The braided stainless tubing is recommended by insurance companies. Low flow toilets are now 1.2 gallons. Toilets 40 years ago were five gallons or more. A low flow toilet can only move waste 70 ft. Horizontally before the water leaves the solid. If you buy a new toilet, it can only be a 1.2 or 1.6. Very seldom do you have to flush a toilet twice. Flush the solids, then the paper.

    Question: What could be causing a delay in the toilet tank filling up again after a flush? We installed a new toilet a few months ago and it was working perfectly at first, but now it waits a few minutes before refilling the tank. Thanks for any suggestions you might be able to offer us!

    In my shower, I had low flow in my hot water only. Cold was ok. So I took apart the valve and the hot water inlet filter was plugged with bits of lime-like sediment. I'm guessing it's because we just had some plumbing work done and knocked loose some sediment.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber

      @bestcomment3985, eventually all faucets, valves and other plumbing fixtures need to be repaired. Faucet designers forgot that their faucets would eventually need to be repaired, especially the high end faucets. You need to look for set screws, handles that need to be pulled off like Grohe faucets, those with handles and escutcheon that need to be screwed off by screwing off the escutcheon ex. Kohler faucets. It makes the job difficult for the plumber and especially the DIY.
