In the latest of Autosport’s “Short View Back to the Past” series, Chief Editor Kevin Turner reveals F1’s fastest failures that never won a championship.

I think he explained it in the video. The 1967 brabham that took the constructors (1.4%) and the 1982 Williams that took the drivers (1.7%).
2005 Renault would probably be up there.

Nelson Piquet took 9 poles out of 16 in the 1984 season but only won 2 races.
The problem with the Lotus 49 was the tragic death of Jimmy Clark. Had he lived, I believe he would have won 3 championships in a row; 1968, 1969, and 1970. And most likely 1972 as well.
It also saddens me when I wonder as I firmly believe alongside Alonso (due to bad luck and career choices) and Senna (death as well) that formula 1 lost potentially ridiculous successes from those men..... Clark especially even by the time of his death could have potentially been a 4 time champion and still had room to continue (was likely going to win 68 since he was always better than Hill and it's Hill who went on to win), it's also underrated how his win/pole record not sure which lasted till the 80s when Prost came along
I like this idea a lot, you should go over every season and do this. You'll find things like the fastest driver in 07 was Alonso, 08 was Massa, 09 Vettel, 12 Hamilton, 16 Hamilton, 17-18 race pace was Vettel etc. Reliability, bad luck, and strategy (cough *Ferrari*) have cost drivers the wdc in the past a lot.
P.S. to add something else to this, you'll see that the 2012 Ferrari was like the 4th fastest car overall, and somehow Alonso almost won the WDC in it.

@@elliotcrossan6290 watch all the 2017 and 18 races, minus all the bad luck, reliability, bad strategy, and most of all Vettels mistakes. Tally up the points and you'll find Vettel victorious in both years by a good margin. Alonso in 2007 beat Hamilton I believe 12-7 in race trim, you can Google that one to find the stats. Minus McLaren driver mistakes (China, Japan, Canada) you find Alonso victorious.
@@Shaggy12321 Lewis had a lot of bad luck in 2017-2018, but people always ignore that. Fewer mistakes of course. He was the fastest driver in the slower car in 2018.
As for 2007 - it was 10-7 to Alonso. In races where neither car had a problem, it was 7-6. In Lewis' rookie season. When he was faster in qualifying. A far cry from how you portray it. Without bad luck, Lewis would've won.
@@Shaggy12321 In 2017 was close. Look how good Bottas was in this year. In 2018 Ferrari was faster in the first part of the season. In the second part Ferrari bringed new updates which were pretty bad.

Love the video, but honestly would've been a lot better had you not just breezed past the Ferraris and given them the explanation on par with the other two. Even if it was split between both cars would've been nice to see a bit more here
I believe the 1991 version of the Williams FW14 also falls in this category. No doubt it was a superior car to the McLaren MP4/6, but that year Senna made a difference.
Williams had a big problem with their brand new semi-automatic gearbox in early 1991 so Mclaren and Senna reap the wins early on before Williams finally sort out the transmission. But by then Senna had already enough of a cushion to clinch the title at Suzuka
I was starting to boil like an RE30B when you started off your list with the Lotus 49 as a fast "failure" (when it gave Lotus a 2nd in the WCC in 1967, its first year, and 1st in 1968 and 1970, and still placed 3rd in 1969---so all podium finishes in its 4 years of service)---but then I simmered down when I got to 3:25. Thanks, I won't have to send you my cardiologist bill.
Most recent fast failure would be the F1-75 sadly.

In my lifetime the fast failures ive watched were 2003 mclaren, 2005 mclaren, 2007 mclaren and 2012 mclaren. yeah im a mclaren fan and think they should have won the championship all those years.
Williams had the faster car in 2003 while I agree with the rest. Another mention for McLaren having the fastest car in the field could be the 2000 season.
No failures= 1982 Champion would be Arnoux. What a beast he was that year, his car only on Saturdays
If 1982 Renault was more reliable, Prost and Arnoux would for sure secure both championships
The very first F1 race I went to was in 1982. My dad took me to the Detroit GP. I was Canadian and seeing Gilles for the first time had me stoked. Unfortunately, shortly before the race, Gilles passed at Zolder. I was saddened.
The very first car I saw on the track live was the Tyrrell 011 It was so loud and the sound echoed between the Renaissance Buildings. I was an instant fan. They were running a mix of normally asperated and turbos that year, but I never noticed.
The next year we came back and the entire field were turbos, I asked my dad "what happened to the noise?". He replied "Turbos". We never went to another race until 1989. After that I would go on to see over 80 GP in my life. I have not been since 2014. Once you hear a screaming Ferrari V12 live...........................................
I thought the FW17 (1995 Williams) would've deserved its spot, colour me surprised. But these ones certainly do seem to deserve being on there
Renault RE 40. The car was the Blueprint for every succesful F1 car until 1989 and didn't win the title. A huge shame. Honorable Mention for the BT55 and MP4/18. Both revolutionary, both superior designs that just came a few years too early.

you need to do a part-2 of this video where f1-75 should top the list.
The Lotus 49 as the video says did not appear until the third race, but in those days there were only 11 races. The massive increase in the power the Ford Cosworth brought was responsible for many of the issues, like drive shafts. The 49 went on the following year to win the drivers and constructors championship and was winning races into 1970 when Rindt won the drivers championship. If thats some kind of failure….
The 2022 Ferrari might become the newest name on this list tbh

I’d add the 2003 Williams too. Won races, often by a large margin but unreliability and some bad luck cost them the championship

Alonso should have won in 2012, but Grosjean ruined it for him at Spa. The RB was probably the faster car, for sure. But it's a real shame Alonso didn't win that year.

Newey and Symonds both agree that the Benetton B195 was the fastest car in the races
Benetton was clearly the best car.

The Lotus 78 in 1977 was superfast and unreliable. 1978 prevented it from being in this list.
Today's Ferrari is the 2020s version of 1982/1983 Renault. Beast during qualifying but prolapsing during the races

It was not the best chassis tbh, the BMW Engine was alot less reliable compared to it's competitors and it ran on Pirelli tyres which were not great in 85 bar the heat at the French Grand Prix where Piquet won!
