The thing with 80’s sounds, especially the early 80’s, these keyboards were new ideas and sounds. Everyone was being creative with these sounds. Programmed sounds were being used as music. It was a Wild West frontier so to speak. Everything you hear in the 90’s, 00’s, and beyond started with these 80’s pioneers with something new and not knowing what the potentials were yet. As a rock guy most of us didn’t like it even back then, but a few people, like Billy Idol was pretty genius at blending the two genres.
It's funny that you mentioned lasers . Steve Stevens the lead guitarist actually used a toy ray gun on the guitar in the solo to get that ray gun sound!
I remember seeing some live footage of him, all of a sudden he just whips out a ray gun off a nearby mic stand right in the middle of his solo and doesn't miss a beat. That blew my mind.
So much more to discover with Billy. Mony Mony, Hot in the City, Got to be a lover, White Wedding, even his slower stuff like Eyes without a Face and Sweet Sixteen are well worth a listen. And Steve Stevens guitar work, amazing.
The LIVE version of Mony Mony is excellent. And Blue Highway has a jam at the end that's pure class. Not '80's shred, but top notch blues rock guitar. Love it.
