    Imagine being 13 years old and the heaviest music you're used to hearing at the time is The Police (great band!), Steve Miller (Abracadabra), and maybe the odd oldie like Stairway to Heaven or something by The Beatles or Stones. You're too young and mainstream to have gone through punk, although you may have seen a few older people with the various punks styles. Then, one day on the radio you hear this. You're 13, and so you understand exactly what it means when he sings she's pumping on the floor at midnight yelling "More, more, more!", but you dare not talk about it, and it's just a song to everyone anyway. This was really cool and my gateway to the rest of Billy Idol's catalogue, including what he did with his band Generation X. He kept up the good music throughout high school for me, and was my first rock concert, with opening act The Cult. Growing up in a very strict household, I was lucky to have gone to this concert, but somehow it happened. I went with a couple of guys from school - The Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, 1987. The great thing is he also came out with a live version of Mony Mony which was recorded in Vancouver, and he mentioned the city. As a kid, to hear your hometown shouted out by a rock god was pretty incredible.

    As a latin man in those 80's, I can tell you we never danced to any rock songs back in the day. Dance music was extremely different in my area. Rock was great but not something to dance to. A good amount of the LA Socal dance music was to a different beat back then.

    First, this is freaky. I was thinking about this song today. Second, according to the Ken Burns documentary on the Civil War, no one knows what the original Rebel Yell sounds like. It was never recorded and lost to time. Supposedly it was blood-curdling though.

    • @idemandabetterfuture
      @idemandabetterfuture 3 года назад +1

      Billy Idol was/is a London Brit, so who knows what he was imagining. Sounds like maybe a rebellious Southern Belle's excited scream?
      Following up on what you say, what I've heard and read is the "Rebel Yell" was a war cry used in the US Civil War by the Rebels; the pro-slavery militias sent to Kansas and then the Confederate soldiers. It was widely described as as an inhuman wail effective in terrorizing those hearing it. Yeah, blood-curdling. I wouldn't think it would have the effect described in the song, be followed by "More, more, more!", or Idol's described reaction to it. Maybe a multiple stabbing.

    Brad, If you like these drums in an 80s sound, I wonder what you would think of Adam Ant. Both Billy Idol and Adam had a punk background. That's why they sound more raw and less techno than a lot of 80s bands.

    • @wadsworthaaron
      @wadsworthaaron 3 года назад

      Adam Ant's "punk" was largely manufactured. He found a super cool jacket at a vintage shop and built an entire image around it. I liked some of his stuff at the time (period music), but it didn't age well.

    Billy started in a punk band in the 70s called Generation X, then in the 80s started his solo career that has had many phases. He recently put out a new album. Still going strong. Sounds better than ever. Billy Idol is one of those artists I classify as unfairly good. His creative output is unreal.

    This was early eighties, the hey day of the electric drums, keyboard, synthesizer and key-tar (yes a keyboard played like a guitar). Billy Idol is not only considered great 80's punk, but essential 80's music. Also, lest we not forget Billy idol was the quintessential sex-symbol of the 80's. The funniest thing is that everyone says he is the nicest most down to earth person, especially to all his fans even now in his 60s.
