This is a live taped concert performance in the 80s that’s Steve Stephens on guitar, one of the greats and Billy Idol a legend. And it’s a shame that you can’t appreciate the great guitar playing and the energy that they are giving off.
I was 11 when MTV started, and they only had a couple of videos that they played in rotation! Billy Idol is from England and sounds even better live! He is still rockin to this day!
Love this video! But this is a scripted and directed video. Notice how small the crowd is and how nobody actually touches Steve's guitar during the solo - that would never happen! Also all the camera angles gives it away.
Back in the '80's, my family didn't have cable tv, so I'd watch MTV at a friend's house during our 30-minute lunch break from high school. A bunch of us would pile into a van and race to a friend's home a few miles away and turn on MTV immediately. We'd eat and jam out to the music videos for 20-minutes and then race back to school just in time. This was one of them that premiered during one of our lunch breaks. Had us all fired up! :) Good times...
This was from the punk rock genre of the early 80's that Billy was king of. It was all about the spiked hair, some had mohawks with different colors and that quick beat, a lot of jumping up and down. So long ago - great memories!
@@losova7543 But if you Google him, it talks about him being in punk rock bands even before his own band and it doesn't mention him and New Wave. There were a ton of New Wave groups for sure like Simple Minds, The Human League, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls and more.
@@alexakl6445 I've seen most of the bands in concert back in the 80's but to Billy Idol, he started in Pink bands but when he went solo, his music transitioned to New Wave. I didn't need to Google him, I saw him in concert in California.
You guys are making me crack up so hard and it's my generation I grew up in lmao, Yeah I can't believe how we were back then but we had fun and it was real pure!
Yes, it was just like that. MTV kept coming out with new videos and our music rocked hard! I loved Billy Idol - so hot! And all our hair was big and it stayed. We used gel, teasing your hair and hairspray. Such a good time! Rock, pop, punk - all of it as great!
billy idol destroy in the world , he is a great star, hes hair are imiteted in 4 corners off earth, the show and musics are deep and unique, please u need more about him , great artist
If you were a guy in your late teens or early 20s when Billy Idol was really going strong it was great! You didn't have to dance to disco if you didn't want to and the ladies really loved cutting loose to his tunes. The dance floor would go absolutely bonkers, with sweat flying everywhere and the air saturated with pheromones... primal.
Back in the 80s there was a very very strong hairspray called aqua net. They used hair dryers and sprayed aqua net almost using the entire can. It is no longer around due to it being an environmental hazard. There was also hair gel.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA You said "Edward Scissorhands"...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA And the black leather too! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I just noticed it when you said it...and after all these years and I'm fucking dying! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was a little kid watching this on MTV. About 8 when this came out. My parents would go out on Friday night and I was old enough to take care of myself so I got to watch HBO, Showtime and all the other channels. This was like 8 at the time in 1983.
I am from the 80s and we wore lots of moose/hair glue/hairspray to spike it!!!! Also the guitar player Steve Stevens world renowned had the mullet type haircut!!!! 🌈☝️✝️☝️🌈
I had the biggest crush on that man! That little lip curl...*swoon* This song gets the blood pumping for sure. I have to set my cruise control if it comes on while I'm driving :) Hair gel and Aqua Net and not a hair would move!
"A Lot of the attention was on the performance, this is the eighties now, not two thousand ten, were not worried about your chain and your car, were interested in what you can do on stage", Perfectly said, that's exactly what listeners/fans cared about back then, not the bling or all the fluff, hairdos and costumes were just an image they portrayed not the focus of fans, a band had to play good music and put on a good show/performance as well, but the performance, the look and all that was secondary to the musical talent.
I was serving in the U.S. Army overseas, had been gone from the USA for about a year. A new guy ships in from back home, we're sitting in a German pub having some beers and he's telling me about this new cable TV station that is devoted to music videos. 24/7 music! On TV! I thought it was the greatest thing I ever heard. Couldn't wait to get back home and see it for myself.
Come on Asia, don't be so jealous of his hair! The 80's were a magical time! Its so hard to explain it! Coming of age in the 80's was such a great time! Music was great ! Economy was rocking... girls were beautiful and well what else!!!! :)
your right asia , the 80s had a very different sound then the 70s , music is always evolving , but also the sythnesizer came out in the 80s or i should say it went more main stream and was more affordable to the majority of people , and alot of musicians really went with it , glad they did i was fortunate enough to be growing up in that time period , thank god we have you tube and or recordings of this music so your generation can enjoy this like we did , thanks for your reactions as always love them !!!
Aww, making fun of Steve’s hair. Lol. Either way, that man can shred a guitar. It’s interesting to hear you talk about how different this is from 70s music, because although this is absolutely 80s, Billy actually has his roots in late 70s punk, with the band Generation X.
Yes i would turn on Mtv before school, during lunch if i went home off campus and after school while doing homework. What was nice is i had a tv close to the bthroom so i watched and listened to Mtv while getting ready for school - kinda set a good mood/ tone for the day and was entertaining - billy idol songs and def leppard videos played a lot.
Just came across this. I love Billy Idol and this song. I grew up listening to him. HAIR really? Yes it was different of course but we don't need to dwell on it. Maybe discuss this after the video. I'll continue to listen, but from the other comments, I may not get to the end.
As a Southerner I always found the title of this song, "Rebel Yell" a bit funny because it has nothing to do with THE Rebel Yell of the Southerners. But I still love Billy Idol. His music and style are timeless.
I tell you a secret: Egg yolk made the hair to stand upright like spikes as Billy's. I made this a hundred times in my youth way back in the 1980ies. And hell yeah, i was so in love with Billy Idol 😁
I believe after the Milli Vanilli fiasco , the Grammy Awards made it you had to sing live at the Grammies, Billy Idol was the first singer after that to sing fiasco and you could see the Audience sort of thinking to themselves, "He is not going to sound good live" thinking his voice was doctored or something like that on the albums... But he proved them wrong and showed he had a really good voice. decades later my nephew worked as a roadie in Australia for Billy Idol and he reckoned Billy Idol rocked. My Nephew has done quite a lot of roadie work for famous singers.. lucky man.
MTV & later VH1, back in the day, showed music videos all day long. Not like today. Yes, if we were home, we'd be watching. You could say that MTV created the music video explosion. Saw Billy in concert around 1987. Great concert.
This song is associated with Rebel Yell whiskey - "with a Rebel Yell she cried more, more, more", and the idea came from an encounter with the Rolling Stones.
Billy Idol was one of my HS heroes. He was loose and wild like me. I even had the studded belt with the handcuff buckle. I remember they'd make me take it off before I went in clubs. 🤣 My Brothers wife tells mine bout me and him in school. She can't believe I was a hood then
no.. just MTV.. this was early cable and MTV only had ONE channel.. and it was all music videos.. yes.. we came home from school and watched MTV. the hair from my boyfriend who was trying to be Billy Idol as much as my small Nebraska town would let him.. .. was mousse and Aquanet.. i had big hair myself.. and Aqua net pink can darlings.. love your comments..
MTV in the USA and Much Music in Canada in the '80s. I remember Much Music very very well lol. And yes Asia it was exactly like you said, come home from school and plant myself in front of the TV for the 4 'o clock Pepsi Power Hour lol
Oh hell yeah. Back when MTV was all music videos and interview shows with musicians and live concerts yeah you came home and the first thing you turned on was MTV in the 80's
Fun Fact- The role of the T-1000 in Terminator 2 was written specifically for Billy Idol but he couldn't take the role after being hurt in a motorcycle accident.
I appreciate that they try to understand the culture back in the day. Its easier to relate to the 60's-70's. 80's was the age of materialism vs anti establishment and finding a place in between.
I think they recorded the video while playing the album version of the song to a crowd, with the band either miming or... more likely... really singing along, then they overdub the studio version to make the music video. But I have no idea... :)
The hair trick...Hand soap! Hair gel and spray gets you so long...but a block of hand soap will get your hair stand like a porcupine :-) Punkers in the late 70 used hand soap for thier mohawk hair. Yeah MTV was king at that time 🙂

This is one of the most iconic songs in music history. And yes we would come home after school and Mtv would go on the TV.
You guys were breaking up the momentum and climax of the song because you were pausing too much.
Kinda of blew moment with to much yakking. Enjoy this talented artist.😊
The least reactors could do is count the bars.
This is the live performance Billy's gf was in the audience

@@2nerC9 not too sure about that because you can hear the fans singing and whistling

Billy idol got to be a lover and catch my fall
Billy fronted a hard core punk band in 1976, Generation X. His punk roots bled over into his later stuff like this. Me? love it
Billy got them skills to get the ladies.
Gel, mousse, and hair spray were big in the '80s. I'm sure EVERYBODY in my high school used tons of it!
"How did they get their hair to be like that?"
Two words: Aqua Net XD
Was I watching this on MTV back in the day? Yes.
I WAS 30 AND LOVED THE 80S MUSIC. I SAW MUSIC CHANGE FROM THE 50S TO NOW. MUSIC WAS BETTER BEFORE THE LATE 80S

It is still sold in Mexico my mom has a can since she still use it, it.
The can is white with pink letters.
8:09 Notice how fast she transitioned from 'Controlling CEO' to 'melted butter,' when Billy sang about, 'giving/ working to give all to the woman'.
Excellent observation, my man. I fail to see how she thought anything is humorous in this video...but, then again....................
I didn't enjoy her perspective very much on this. Felt flippant and lacking depth.

His hair is EXACTLY THE SAME today 😝 haha
From memory the spikes were mainly gel and hours of patience twisting as small a number of hairs together in each spike.
