I really liked this video - you described the many challenges, limitations and obstacles a photographer sometimes (often) has to overcome to get the image imagined. Getting subject, lightning, stars to align, fences, gates and sometimes animals (or people with torches) for the image - yet more challenges. But as you always say - is is part of the total adventure and part of the fun! What impresses me the most about you Richard, is that not only do you do all of the above to get a beautiful image, but you also do your own video at the same time! That has to substantially increase the difficulty and that thought helps to keep me from complaining when I think I'm tired from just taking photos alone. Thank you!
As always Richard a great location with some fabulous images always a joy to see what the adventure is going to be once again very entertaining with a wonderful location Many thanks Richard 😊
What a great idea and adventure Richard. Images are great as always and was interested in your settings with the moon coming into play. Thank you for sharing.
Great result at a different location and unique compositions. The Moonlight lit up the scene and showed the spillway really well. You seem to like the 16m Viltrox lens and it seems to be doing the job well. 😎😁👍
That location was something different indeed! I quite like it! I am amazed how many different compositions you are always able to squeeze out of 1 night. Not easy, especially when also making a video.
Well done once again Richard. You really do go to considerable trouble at times to achieve your aims. But its always obvious from the brilliant results you produce that your dedication, time and effort are well worth it! Once again some stunning shots from a true astrophotography master, I just love your work. I'm certain Joel Bowden, Benny Gale and Duncan Kellaway are also all suitably impressed. Keep it up Richard, brilliant work yet again!
What a fun adventure Richard! Nice compositions with the moon lighting the forground. I'm so excited because I will be on my first milkyway adventure of the season in a couple of weeks. Take care, Jerry.
Thanks Richard. Enjoyed watching and sharing in your adventure. I laughed at the fence situation as it looked like the thought was crossing your mind to jump the fence, but I know you wouldn't. The final results are great images. Looked a bit precarious in some places with those rocks.
Great video, adventure, location & photos! Reckon I'd have felt a bit apprehensive being downstream of those sluice gates at night! Thanks for sharing, Richard.
Great images Richard, love that you took the time to grab the reverse angle moon set as well, really nice variation with the moonlight reflecting on the water.
Richard, great work and photos. The imagination and adventure to make a composition are just as fun as capturing the scene. Looks like you really enjoyed it, rum balls too.
Stunning images as usual Richard! It was interesting to see your ability to adapt to conditions that weren’t what you expected. Good to see you enjoying a rum ball too!
Superb images and a great adventure, Richard. I always think there should be special skeleton keys that nightscape photographers are entrusted with to access anywhere at night and make things easier!!
Loved seeing you move your phone around setting up the shot with the Milky Way. I think my favourite was the last one, the big wide one. Glad they didn't decide to sweep you off your feet, Richard :)
Great results and reflections after checking out the location prior. That is so important for this or any ankle spraining/snapping location, hopefully someone knows where you were. Looking towards the moon has also yielded great results.
Great images Richard its an interesting structure. You are braver than me, I'd be thinking hope the don't open the flood gates. At least it's too cold for snakes 🙂. Cheers Jason
Great images Richard and a well-deserved rum ball - your pano @ 12:30 came out a treat 👌. I can see that you've responded in the comments, but I'd have felt more than a little vulnerable wandering around alone in the dark underneath those big gates! 😨
Great work! I have seen some of your videos and your Milky Way processing is insanely good. You could even get a telescope, a motorized equatorial mount and start deep space photography. There's hundreds of galaxies that can be imaged with entry level deep space gear.
As always, GREAT images -- I actually really liked the image of the moon with the water in the foreground! Thanks for another inspiring video! By the way, we had one of your previous Prime Ministers (Scott Morrison) speak at our church last week!
Another excellent video Richard, brilliant innovative compositions, the panoramas were fantastic, I enjoyed watching the panorama with the Viltrox 16mm, is Richard enjoying the Viltrox 16mm? Thanks for sharing Richard, stay safe.
Good stuff as usual Richard, Im surprised you can get anywhere near the dam downstream, We are very restricted in where we can go in relation to any dams in the water catchment areas here, we can drive over some of them but everything downstream would be fenced and locked and off limits even irrigation dams
Great video Richard, l must admit, l had a vision in my head of the flood gates opening and you desperately trying to keep your camera gear dry…..lol Thanks again for the info and great tips….. Steve
Hi. I'm new to this type of photography. I'm binge watching to try to understand it all. I understand most of the technique and terminology. I get the single shots, the light painting, and the tracker. I'm trying to find more about the panarama-ing. Sometimes you do a pano of the sky and/or the foreground. Is that just, as with landscapes, because you can zoom in more and still have a big file? And when you talk about "stacking", to reduce noise (?), what parameter are you changing during the stack?...and then are you just bringing each shot is as a layer and running the stack program in PS? Thank you! Steve
Thanks heaps for your great support Steve. I do shoot my panoramas pretty much the same as daytime landscape one's. Many times I'll shoot 2 separate panos .. one for the sky shots as I'm limited with shutter speed, and one for the foreground at longer shutter speeds as I'm not limited with the shutter speed as it's not moving. Then I'll blend these 2 together in photoshop. Sometimes I'll shoot a panorama because I can't fit it all in in a single frame . .as is the case in this video. Yes panoramas have more pixels but that's not my primary motive for shooting them. When I shoot to "Stack for Noise Reduction" I'll run those images through a separate program called Sequator which does the stacking and also freezes the ground so everything lines up properly. Then I'll generally work on that file in Photoshop further. I don't stack in Photoshop .. . but I do often Blend images in photoshop . . especially my light painted shots.
Richard was the presence of the moon what stopped you from using a star tracker? What factors impact your decision to stack as opposed to track? Loved the video and the compositions.
Well a number of factors. Yes the moonlight was one. The other was the position of the subject. I would have been fairly difficult to get a clear sky to deploy the tracker. So I decidied that stacking was the better option.
hey richard, another great video :) i know you use photoshop alot, can i ask do you use the same color profile for editng images and printing, or are they different ? do you use srgb, adobe or prophoto rgb thanks 👍
I have 3 questions, In Australia who can modify a camera for astro photography, the second is, without a star tracker the stars leave a trail, what do you use to deleted them? and the third question is that you talk about an addition to light room for astro editing, what is that addition? I am learning a lot and I think this is something I might pursue.
Thanks for watching Phillip. Imaging By Design in Melbourne do camera mods. www.imagingbydesign.com.au/ Without a star tracker you have to limit your shutter speed so the trails are minimised. This is determined by the focal length of the lens you're shooting with. I do use Lightroom a lot but I also use Photoshop for things that Lightroom can't do. Was there a specific addition you are referring to ..?
Learning from your process. I overlook the artistic aspects as I tend to lean on the technical side of nightscapes.
That's a very common occurrence Boyce.

The moonlight bathed the scene nicely Richard a nice selection of images the rocks looked great.
Thanks Carl. Really appreciated.
They were all good shots. My favorite was the close up shot of the spillway. Great video.
Yes I tend to agree with you on that one Russell. Thanks for watching.
Amazing and inspiring video.. great details with the moon.. great to see you gettng back to eating Rumballs
Haha, thanks Virat. I'm always eating something it seems on these long night shoots.
Great video. Here in the USA that spillway would have been flooded with so many lights it would have looked like a small city.
I'm really glad it wasn't Randy.
As always Richard a great location with some fabulous images always a joy to see what the adventure is going to be once again very entertaining with a wonderful location Many thanks Richard 😊

Enjoying a good coffee, is a excellent start to your day. Love the detail in the picture. Can't wait for your next adventure. Safe travels.

A great way to start the morning having coffee and watching another great Nightscape Images video. Love it Richard.

Images turned out spectacular Richard! Have a great weekend my friend. Coffee and rumbles sounds like a real plan. 🙏🏻☕️🍪
Yes it's my go to plan when out on my adventures.
I loved the moonlight shot Richard, what a fantastic location and result
Thanks as always Kim. Yes sometimes simple is best.

Haha .. you're a legend Al.
Have a good weekend, great location, photo enjoyed the video ,thanks for your time

Solid night out there Richard! Sometimes you just have to summon the inner mountain goat to scamper up those rocks. Beautiful results 🌌♥️!
Haha, yes that's so true Dominic. Thanks again for looking.
What a great idea and adventure Richard. Images are great as always and was interested in your settings with the moon coming into play. Thank you for sharing.

Beautiful indeed.
Thanks my friend.
Yes Richard very nice shots. I thought the moon maybe a problem with light as you normally want spots as dark as possible..........
Well it was to a degree, it washed out the sky a lot.
Thank you Richard. A beautiful composition.
You're very welcome Rogerio.
What a fun adventure Richard! Nice compositions with the moon lighting the forground. I'm so excited because I will be on my first milkyway adventure of the season in a couple of weeks. Take care, Jerry.

Yes it was pretty slow going Brendan, but we got there in the end.
Fantastic video Richard, awesome shots as always and the spill way makes an interesting foreground.
Thanks Dennis, I'm glad you liked it.
Great video, adventure, location & photos! Reckon I'd have felt a bit apprehensive being downstream of those sluice gates at night! Thanks for sharing, Richard.
Haha, yes I was keeping a sneaky eye on those gates all night long Darrel

You're very welcome my friend. Thanks for watching.
Great images Richard, love that you took the time to grab the reverse angle moon set as well, really nice variation with the moonlight reflecting on the water.
Thanks a lot Eric. Yes it was a great view looking back down the river in that direction.
Richard, great work and photos. The imagination and adventure to make a composition are just as fun as capturing the scene. Looks like you really enjoyed it, rum balls too.

So weird to see the Milky Way "upside-down" from the way we see it in the Northern Hemisphere. Also the extended southern part that is hidden to us.
