So many great images! We were at our Star Party on a property between Geelong and Ballarat and managed to get under 3 hours of clear views South. It was such a magical experience. Also, nice tribute to Alyn - He is on my mind every time I try editing my images from that night.

Richard, never have I seen you so animated during a nightshoot. Like a kid in a candy shop! The aurora does that to people for some strange reason. I'm so glad that night sky lovers from both hemispheres got to witness a part of history. This was officially the strongest solar storm for 21 years beating the Halloween 2003 storm. I just wished Alyn Wallace was still with us to witness it 💚 brilliant video
Loved the ending. One master of their craft honoring another master of their craft. They say you don't realise how much you appreciate someone until they're gone...; Thank you for always bringing us awesome videos, Richard! And Alyn, thank you for the lightshow, it was awesome!🌠
lol..in NZ where I live (christchurch) We get stuff like that not has big ...I missed this year as I was towards equator...lol....but I got the kp8 storms last year...so cool to watch your excitement...lol awesome shots
Great images and video fella. I went out not expecting much so didn't take out all my cameras. I ended up using my phone to capture some shots. Nice touch dedicating it to Alyn, I did think of him when out last Friday as it was his videos that showed me I could capture the night sky with an ordinary camera. Also like you Richard I was facing south despite being at 55° north.

Thank you for that. What a special event. I loved that you mentioned Alyn.... He might just have played his part in that show...., I like to think that. 😊
The excitment in your voice Richard echoed mine exactly when I caught my first on the 11th May, I had no idea on settings as Ive never sought to shoot it before so I just left the camera on what I would normaly have for tracking apart from a shorter shutter speed but in the end if the pics didnt work it didnt matter I just felt so privelaged to have witnesed it in real time with the naked eye watching the beams come and go and the colours where other worldly, what a night, and to dedicate it to Alyn just sheer class, Im sure he would have loved it, thankyou
Superb video Richard, loved watching this, a spectacular show and I can really feel your excitement on location. Beautiful images and a once in a life time show indeed. We had an epic show in N. Ireland, best I've seen since 2003 and like yourself I can't believe how lucky I was to get a clear night. That isolated red beam in your footage away from the main aurora looks like SARS, often a precursor to STEVE. Fantastic vlog and hope you are keeping well.
An absolutely amazing videos and shows how everyone felt on the day with emotions and a chaos .. you did so well and loved it Richard .. this day will be in memory for a long time
You did better than I did...I couldn't even film a video, I was too flabbergasted by what I was seeing! It was a special night that's for sure! Never in a million years would I have thought to see them like that just outside the city I live in in Eastern Canada. The colours were incredible! 2024 has been wild, Full Solar Eclipse, record auroras...what's next? (Hard not to think about Alyn)
Awesome stuff Richard. I never thought to capture video in the excitement. At 7mm on m43 I still needed multiple frames to fit it in. Mostly unplanned shooting my kinda style :)
Love, love, love this video Richard. It brought back all the excitement I felt while I was out this night. My husband also watching said "he sounds like you" lol. It was such a beautiful night that will stay in our memories forever.
Superb and epic theatre on the sky Richard. Thank you. In my country i saw Aurora Borealis on 10th May 2024. It was the first time in my life. I took more pictures during one hour. . Wonderful experience.
Richard, thanks for sharing your incredible experience. The mural and silo photo looks outstanding. I noticed the dancing lights in sky behind you during your last few seconds before you drove home; wow! My weather forecast on last Friday night, clouds until around 3 AM. Foolish me, I stayed home! I too like to plan my night photography trips so I take all the right equipment and know my location.
Nice touch on Allyn. Bless him and you. Wish I could been there so exciting. So many great shots here in the USA. Down as far South as Key Largo Florida. My beloved niece and her husband sent me their Raw fillies to work on. They live in dark sky country of far Western South Dakota. Oh how I wish could have been there or anywhere away from light pollution here in Southeast Virginia. Just had my shoulder replaced on Wednesday. Maybe there will be another time. Great shots and energy Richard. Thank you again so much for sharing. Keep them coming.

Glad you got out to photograph it. It was truly an amazing and historic night. I felt all the same feelings you experienced as I was standing in the mountains surrounded by light beams. I get chills thinking about it. Congrats.
This was probably my all-time favorite video of yours. Your enthusiasm was awesome. I drove over six hours back home from my best friends funeral in Kentucky that evening and then jumped right back in my vehicle 30 minutes later and went out to shoot the Aurora in Southern Michigan, USA. What an absolutely amazing experience it was. Your photos were absolutely stunning. Keep up the amazing work. I look forward to your next adventure.
Hi Richard!!! I could feel your joy and happiness, as the sky was on fire!!! The photos are just stunning! I know Alyn would love to have been there to see that!!! I don't know if you spotted it or not but you got a shooting star at about 8:25 on the timer. Look in the upper left corner. I looked to see if anyone else saw it in the comments, I did not read them all. From what I saw no one mentioned it. I hope I get to see this beautiful sky display at some point in my life time. That you for the video!!!

Never thought I would witness a G5 in my lifetime but so glad I did. Keep the videos coming, your enthusiasm is infectious when it comes to night scape images.
Richard simply magnificent photos, the panoramas of the Silos, its silhouette and the other photos are fantastic, it was a memorable night across the planet. On Friday morning, I and 3 friends moved 260km south to the darkest area of Portuga, during dinner, which was still daylight, one of my friends and I received an alert about the Northern Lights, but we didn't pay much attention because we thought they were only for northern Europe, when we arrived at our location to photograph (Noudar Castle) I was the first to take a photo and I was incredulous with the white balance that I had put on the camera, the entire landscape was Pink and Red, but no, it was really a gigantic Northern Lights that reached 37º Latitude, we stayed taking photos until the sun rose. Thank you for sharing this magnificent Southern night with us, a hug Richard. Beautiful tribute to Alyn 👏🙏
We were at the beach with HUNDREDS if not thousands of people all looking up at the sky and when the aurora peaked everyone cheered, it was such a surreal moment to see everyone gather to watch this, once in a lifetime indeed. I was up 24 hours from work and this yet the joy kept me up haha! omg you even caught the milky way on that first image!
Absolutely wonderful video of an epic night, Richard. So glad you caught it and managed to find clear skies - the effort was so well rewarded. That pano with the reflections in the small lake was perfection. Thanks for taking us on the ride of a lifetime! Alyn would have loved that night.
Great adventure! Thanks for bringing us along. The red aurora you saw to the west in Orion is called a SAR (Stable Auroral Red) arc. They are typically featureless and usually sub-visual and always equatorward (north in your case) of the main aurora. Alex Cherney got some nice shots from the Great Ocean Road. SARs have been known to evolve into STEVE arcs, though I don’t think we heard of any STEVE sightings from either the north or south this night. But when you get a show of aurora do check elsewhere in the sky for other arcs. You might not see them but the camera can pick them up, even just on the live view screen. Cheers!
Fantastic images Richard. Your tribute was very moving. Alyn was such an inspiration for so many and we are all so fortunate to have had the benefit of his work and knowledge. Thank you.
Richard, that was a fantastic video!! So glad you got to witness it where you were. So jealous of the lack of people !! But at the same time I’m so very glad that so many people were able to witness such a spectacular event! The people who were parked next to Suz and I brought their kids out to witness it. They were not photographers. But they were in awe of what they saw. I didn’t get stunning compositions like you did. But very grateful for the images that I did capture. We were heading west when the notifications kept coming in so detoured hoping to capture it. I’m glad we did. I’ve never seen anything like it. Especially in Melbourne. So very glad to have seen your stunning images.
Thanks so much Jules. I'm really pleased that you and Suz have been able to get out a bit more in recent times. From what I saw your images are gorgeous.
You should point out that you've "created" these video "shots". It is clear that the Aurora is static while you a wandering around the frame going on about how amazing it looks! The aurora is dynamic, I've been photographing and filming for many years too. I did see if with my own eyes and did photograph it here in Tasmania and no doubt it was the brightest and most powerful I've ever seen!
Well I'm really surprised how little you know about live astro video shooting. I can assure you this is live and un-altered in any way. Maybe you should look at mine and others videos on these topics.
Disagree - yes, auroras are usually moving, but last week I just watched the sky glowing a steady red/ orange, only dimming twice for a moment, for 20 minutes. Not everything in nature is a constant.
Incredible images Richard, the grain silo one was off the scale and what a lovely tribute to Alyn at the end, he was looking down on us last Friday bless him ❤️ I even got to see them properly for the first time in my back garden here in the UK, been on my bucket list for 3 years or more, goosebump moment 👌
It was a night to remember, the overhead ribbons at 11:30 pm in Tassie was something I’ve never seen before. Great you got to experience it too. Thanks for sharing

WOW amazing Richard, I think you did so well managing to film, while all that was going on! Thank you for taking us on this journey with you, so inspiring.
I've been hoping you would experience this event. A Carrington Event with the expected destruction. And while we still have another year in this cycle, it's unlikely we'll see it again. I'm going to send you a cuppa! As always, thanks for all your works RT.
I absolutely fell in love with these photos. I also spent the whole night watching the northern lights. In Poland, the sky was very cloudy at that time, but the show was still amazing.

Thank you again Richard. Fantastic shots with a lovely tribute to Alyn. Cheers.
Thanks so much for your comments Adi
Yes it was quite magnificent wasn't it Mario.
Thanks Andy. Yes so many people were able to shoot this event. I wanted to get away from the crowds hence my travels inland.
Absolutely wonderful video of an epic night, Richard. So glad you caught it and managed to find clear skies - the effort was so well rewarded. That pano with the reflections in the small lake was perfection. Thanks for taking us on the ride of a lifetime!
Alyn would have loved that night.
Yes Alyn sure would have loved that night Paul. Thanks for your support my friend.
Cheers!
Thanks for your wisdom Alan. I see you captured some wonderful images also.
What are STEVE's? I saw pale green, medium blue, violet, magenta, and dark red (almost burgundy) where I was. I am assuming the magenta is the SAR.
My sentiments exactly. Epic storm in Montana that night. 400 images and every one is incredible. 360 degrees of aurora.
Thanks for looking Keith
Fantastic images Richard. Your tribute was very moving. Alyn was such an inspiration for so many and we are all so fortunate to have had the benefit of his work and knowledge. Thank you.
Thanks for your kind words Rod
Great video documenting a very special night. Lovely tribute to Alyn at the end.
Thanks so much for checking it out Mike.
Absolutely amazing, I am very happy for you that you were able to experience this!
Thanks so much my friend
When we think you did all possible Masterpieces.... A better one comes!
Thank you Raphael
Mate. Words can't obviously reflect how you must have felt. Stunning shots. Thank you so much for sharing this experience❤️
Very kind of you Manjul, thanks for your great support.
Disagree - yes, auroras are usually moving, but last week I just watched the sky glowing a steady red/
orange, only dimming twice for a moment, for 20 minutes. Not everything in nature is a constant.
My apologies, just looked so motionless. Guess the distance is the issue but I can see it slowly changing when I look carefully. My bad! ;-(
@@scottwbennett No worries Scott
Thank you very much Richard for sharing this beautiful record of the auroras, I was surprised with those spectacular images😍🤩👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much Javier
Incredible images Richard, the grain silo one was off the scale and what a lovely tribute to Alyn at the end, he was looking down on us last Friday bless him ❤️ I even got to see them properly for the first time in my back garden here in the UK, been on my bucket list for 3 years or more, goosebump moment 👌
Yes it was wonderful wasn't it Garry, thanks for looking.
I really like the photographs especially the tribute to Alyn at the end.
I'm glad you enjoyed it Russell.
Totally get it!! I was so overwhelmed with what I was seeing I think I just froze!
Yes it was very much like that Andrea.
Great vlog Rich, we've had them in England but not that good and long lasting. Some amazing images at the end, top draw .
Thanks for tuning in Alan
Absolutely beautiful! So awesome. Once in a lifetime, and you got it and got it perfectly! Simply amazing!
Thanks so much.
It was a night to remember, the overhead ribbons at 11:30 pm in Tassie was something I’ve never seen before. Great you got to experience it too. Thanks for sharing
Yes certainly was a wonderful show Jeff
Bravo, Richard! Wonderful photos, wonderful behind-the-scenes footage, and you conveyed your excitement and enthusiasm perfectly. Your tribute to Alyn Wallace was beautiful.
Thank you Doug, always appreciate your comments and support.
What an amazing light show. Will be hard to beat this one. I have to admire your enthusiasm, it just shows us how much you love doing nightscapes. A lovely tribute at the end. Thanks for sharing. May all your travels be safe.
Very kind of you Darren. Always appreciate your comments.
Wonderful photos Richard - truly awesome - and a great choice of music as an accompaniment! Congratulations. And a lovely tribute to Alyn. Thanks for sharing!
As always I greatly appreciate your comments Darrel.
WOW amazing Richard, I think you did so well managing to film, while all that was going on! Thank you for taking us on this journey with you, so inspiring.
As always I appreciate you following along Rob mate.
As always AMAZING shots..
Thanks for watching
I've been hoping you would experience this event. A Carrington Event with the expected destruction. And while we still have another year in this cycle, it's unlikely we'll see it again. I'm going to send you a cuppa! As always, thanks for all your works RT.
That is so very kind of you. Appreciate your support.
Richard, what a great opportunity. Thanks again for sharing it with us.
You're welcome Steve
I absolutely fell in love with these photos. I also spent the whole night watching the northern lights. In Poland, the sky was very cloudy at that time, but the show was still amazing.
Thanks so much for watching.
