And the DC cinematic universe has been officially rebooted. The events of The Flash have officially restarted the DC Universe, laying the groundwork for James Gunn’s brand new Superman, as well as a familiar face returning as the new DCU Batman. And we got a post credit scene that reveals some of our classic DCEU characters will be sticking around. [clip, booya!]
And in a weird way, we sort of got a brand new Flash. [clip, American Pie “What?!”] Well okay not exactly, as of right now the character is still played by Ezra Miller. But, the character has fundamentally changed and has A LOT of growth in this film.
So let’s break down the true meaning of this film, how its use of time travel and the multiverse create the perfect setting for this coming of age story. And how this character growth not only changes the character of Barry Allen, but the future of DC movies as a whole. [clip]
So while The Flash is a multiversal time travel extravaganza with multiple Batman’s and an alien invasion. Its key focus is more down to earth. Self discovery, self sacrifice, inner struggle, self acceptance, and grief. And while it’s very much so a continuation of the Flash’s story, in a weird way it’s also an origin story. I was really impressed with the way this film was able to be a giant spectacle culmination film, yet simultaneously be the Flash origin film we never got to see.
In The Flash we got to see Barry grow from an immature childlike character offering comedic relief-to becoming a title character in his own right, a character worthy of his own film.
And I just need to address something real quick. I’ve heard some say that they could have just called this film Batman: Flashpoint. And I’m sorry but no, that couldn’t be further from the truth. This movie is a Flash film through and through. Batman is a supporting character in this film, an important supporting character, but still a supporting character nonetheless.
And while Ezra Miller is problematic in the real world, I have to look beyond that to give this movie an honest analysis. And the truth is that the two characters who carry this film are Barry Allen and Barry Allen. [clip, you have my face]
This film harkens back to some of your most basic superhero tropes, but presents them in a way that feels fresh, yet at the same time nostalgic. Tropes such as tragedy being responsible for the creation of the hero.
The death of Barry’s mother set Barry down the path to becoming The Flash. Had Barry’s mother never died, his father never would have been arrested for her murder. Sidebar, Barry’s dad didn’t kill his mother, but we’ll talk about who did in a later video.
Anyway, Barry’s path in life was paved by his mission to prove his father’s innocence. This inspired him to go into forensic criminal research. And in this film we finally got to see the night Barry got his powers. When doing late night work at a crime lab Barry is struck by lightning. Well actually the lightning strikes through a shelf full of chemicals first that then strikes Barry and gives him his speedster powers. [clip]
The death of Barry’s mother, the imprisonment of his father, and the lightning strike that gave him powers not only led to him becoming the fastest man alive-but he was fundamentally changed as a person. Like Batman or Spider-Man, The Flash’s tragedy defines him.
Another classic trope that’s front and center is the superheroes struggle of balancing their personal life and their herolife. The Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, especially 2004’s Spider-Man 2 did this brilliantly. It depicted the tightrope a hero has to walk. [clip, Peter being late for pizza job and Dr. Connors talking asking why he’s always late.]
And The Flash is the first film in nearly twenty years to execute this struggle so perfectly. And Barry always being late is even more ironic because he’s the fastest man alive. This irony is again highlighted when we hear Barry tell his boss at the crime lab that he feels they’re quote “rushing investigations.”

I met the CW Wally West at a music festival a few years ago. Super nice kid! As long as there is a Flash somewhere I'm happy. Don't care if it's Barry or Wally. Gunn just needs to keep Flash on the movie slate. It took us how long to get a flash movie? I'm worried we won't get another for awhile. I thought this movie could have done reshoots for an ending that swaps Barrys or something. They even show us another Flash. Respect for CW's fake Jay Garrick aka Teddy Sears!

Yeah but at the same time I was surprised he put him in there to begin with instead of keeping Keaton.
It was his idea to have the cameo, and had Clooney meet with Ezra to help him with the “public” apparently. Gunn does like Ezra so I have no clue, he had high praise for him for the peacemaker cameo

Barry's actions can be used to explain any and all "continuity" issues in past film universes, such as different people playing Bruce Wayne in the '89 universe prior to any retcons made by the comics.
I think there is one thing you and Eric (new rockstars) missed in the post credits. Barry is talking to aquaman about traveling between universes. He says something to the effect: “they were all different, they were all different batmen, you were always the same guy but they were all different” this use of ALL implies that Barry has been traveling through the multiverse looking for his original Bruce.

What if we find out that the Flash is the reason we got 3 different Bruce Wayne’s and two Harvey Dent’s in the 90’s movies? Each time he went back he messed with the timelines and things changed! It could also explain why Christopher Reeve’s Superman changed to Brandon Routh and erased the Superman 3 + 4!
I would like to see you do a video on The Flash vs Across the Spider Verse as both movies dealt with the themes of fate/destiny how both tackle them differently. Both movies are dichotomy of each other
Well Miles story isn't even resolved yet. You don't know if he breaks "fate"
Well, there is still hope in seeing Keaton donning the cape and cowl one more time because his Batman wasn't in the Burtonverse as evidenced by the Gotham City skyline and Soviet Union secret base. Plus Martha and Thomas Wayne were different in the photo compared to the ones in Batman '89. But Andy muddled this with the Joker's laugh bag and Batcomputer. The spaghetti analogy of time travel is crucial to understand.
There’s no way Gunn is touching the Flash for a sequel in his Gods and Monsters” phase 1..the Clooney cameo was a one off joke and Barry is now stuck there in an alternate timeline and we won’t see him again anytime soon if ever.
How can he be stuck when he can just run to any timeline he wants? Gunn was also accused of grooming so I could see him keeping Ezra and bringing him back eventually as Reverse Flash.

I think George Clooney being an older Batman would be awesome. Clooney would make an excellent Bruce Wayne that has grown and let go of his darkness a little bit. And i’d love to see Sasha Calle return as Supergirl. She actually stole every scene she was in.
How cool would it be if the Reverse Flash was played by Grant Gustin, not as Eobard Thawne but as a evil variant of Barry. I know that Dark Flash was also a variant of Barry but I don't think that Dark Flash was evil per-se, more like a misguided one.
Once I saw the scar and noticed all the spikes sticking out, I immediately thought of Savitar - specifically like the CW Arrowverse
I thought they were setting up for a potential sequel or a surprise main villain for this one. I wish they went into it a bit more
Then I thought how crazy would it be if they ended up making Barry go back and literally kill his mom, becoming the DCEU’s version of the reverse flash. It wouldn’t make much sense but then again it’s the DCEU so the plot twist alone might have been enough of a sell
I Love Calle, but give me Cavill/Ben/Gal/Jason as our foundations and add in Calle/Keaton.

If you pay attention to what James Gunn has said, pretty much all of these actors/universe are being re-set.
There’s no way Ezra is staying the Flash even if they weren’t rebooted. The new Superman is going to be younger so most likely Batman will be as well. Clooney was just a fun nod, he’s not going to be the new main Batman.
So yeah there’s not going to be a sequel, it’s all getting rebooted.
Barry does say in the post credit scene. They were all Batman. As in he didn't just meet Clooney. At least that's what i got from that scene.

He pays attention to everything James Gunn says for a living.
Every actor is not being reset. Gunn apparently like Mamoa and will keep him. Its a soft reboot only. Henry Cavill and Ben Afleck will go, that’s the only thing he’s confirmed.
Clooney was not just a fun nod. This movie sets up the new DC universe. To quote Jame Gunn “The Flash, a fantastic movie that I really love which resets the entire DC universe, then to move into blue beetle…”
Also, the last scene was shot with Michael Keaton as well, there are photos of him standing there. The pre screenings had an ending where they just show batman’s feet and Barry says whoa who’re you? But they went witb this ending so if they don’t make Clooney Batman going forward, its just completely pointless

Meh overall. Even if Miller didn't have his real world problems, he was too obnoxious...and not in the fun way Like the justice league cartoon one was.
Garbage literally garbage and ezra miller as the flash is a huge miscast..garbage. Only real good dc movies are Tim Burton's batman 1 and 2. Nolan's trilogy and the batman. Shazam maybe but the rest is TRASH!!

The dcu Batman is not going to be Clooney. That's wrong. Barry is likely just in a different timeline so they can recast Ezra Miller or not i think they left it vague on purpose so they have room to choose

We know Keaton is alive because of the Dark Crisis event in the comics that forms Earth-789 so he got revived with different changes to his timeline. He still killed Joker but he stopped killing criminals after that which makes so much more sense now and that’s why Sam Hamm was able to do his original intended vision. Don’t know if we will ever see a Crisis On Infinite Earths movie but it would be awesome to see Keaton fighting alongside his new timeline allies Reeve’s Superman & Slater’s Supergirl.
Ezra Miller died on his way back to his home planet. He won't come back.

@@jacobsims8307Naw, there just aren't enough VFX artists to keep up with the massive amount of shots that need done in the time they need done nowadays with so many CGI-heavy franchises trying to put out as many entries as possible all the time. Basically a combo of studios rushing movies out the door while VFX companies being understaffed. It's been a problem for a few years.
@@francisbonga5936 normally I don’t really mind it and can wrap my mind around it but that was honestly some of the worst cgi I’ve seen in years. When both Barrys were on screen it was hard to watch, especially when both were in the batwing. The alternate Supermans didn’t look good either especially cage

Flash Said explicitly in the post credit scene that he KEPT meeting Bruce's that looked different. Meaning that Clooney was only the first Batman variant. How did no one notice this?
Haven't seen the film yet. Will wait awhile. But with this Multiverse situation I honestly hope they would bring in Batman beyond 🙌🏾. I love Bruce, but would be nice to see Terry at some point.

On Thawne. Yeah, they should have had him in this flash movie honestly. Not as the main focus or main villain, but he should have been in the movie.
Actually, even better, he should have been younger Barry. Cause I’m of the things in the comics which unfortunately wasn’t adapted to the CW show (maybe it was, idk, stopped watching after season 4 or something) is that Eobaed Thawne idolized Barry SOOOOOO much that he had reconstructive surgery to change his face, weight, and height to be like Barry. Then he ran around trying to save the day in an era that was a bit too peaceful for his liking.
He started causing the crimes and disasters in his time so that he could show up and save people from them (very much like Syndrome in the incredibles planned to do). Barry randomly winds up in Thawnes time and is a little creeped out this guy got surgery to look like him but genuinely likes that he’s out trying to save the day and all.
And then he finds out this creeper is saving people from himself and stops him and all that and goes home.
Reverse flash then sees in a flash museum in the past that he’s destined to be the flashes greatest enemy and loses what little sanity he has left.
So, if he was the other Barry in the movie the whole time and there weren’t obvious reveals he was but a few hints that would’ve been an amazing pay off for the next film.
And honestly, I would much rather see a reverse flash film that follows reverse flash’s life in the order he perceives it.
And another thing that could make that movie interesting is just how many times reverse flash has died and reset the universe and multiverse potentially and something the CW show did pretty well.
Reverse flash has a bunch of notes he writes to himself in the Negative Speed force. So, he’s born, becomes the flash of the future, goes unhinged and gets stopped by Barry. Then wanders into the speed force and sees these notes written down by someone claiming to be him about how to fuck with Barry, how to use his powers, how to manipulate time and reality, etc.. he studies them in this realm where he’s immortal and has as much time as he needs. Then he goes and fucks with Barry and reality and gets some experience on being a petty douchebag and wanders back into that part of the Negative Speed Force where he wrote notes to himself realizing he might fuck up and die or something. And he adds tk the notes so that the Next version of him can read them and make adjustments.
He goes to fuck with Barry more and write more notes and then eventually dies fighting Barry.
Then another one of him winds up here anyway (like Kang) and sees these notes. And the cycle repeats.
A movie about him would be very interesting. The movie starts with him in school and finds some way to showcase that in this future time period education and knowledge are much more advanced than in our era. The same way that if one of us goes back 2,000 years or so our knowledge of things like medicine, how an airplane works, how to build a steam engine, composite armor, gravity, etc would be ground breaking achievements. Just having a basic understanding about any of that would make you appear to have god level intellect. And that’s just knowledge of the basics for modern tech we use. You didn’t discover those things but you likely have at least a fundamental understanding of how a lot of those things work. E.g. steam engine heats up water to create a stream of steam that can be used to spin something really fast using wheels and such. Building something like that you can make a train or other machines.
Or the wing of a plane works by making the top surface area of the wing have more surface area (just curve it) while the bottom has less (straight line, but actually a concave would be better for … nvm… this is the simple version) so that on the top the air pressure is lowered (due to less air being there) and the bottom has more pressure (due to more air being there) and this causes the spot with more air to push the object into the spot with less air (which is also sucking the object into that spot to fill the void).
Knowing even the simplified version of “curve top of wing and make bottom of wing straight” you can build a functional glider.
Or how batteries work and what they can be used for, etc..
The point of this part of the story is to show that in this future Eobard Thawne lives in anyone with average or slightly below intelligence can come to our time and they’d know something revolutionary and ground breaking to us, even if they didn’t fully understand it simply cause they have the knowledge (seriously, if you time travelled to like 1850 and told some physicists “E=MC squared” and you didn’t even know what E, M, C, or squared [you should at least know that one] meant and they stopped to think about it and work out what you said… then WWI might be the first war with nukes or even before then. ).
So, after establishing that the knowledge of the average person in their time compared to ours is the equivalent to the average knowledge we have compared to like 2,000 years ago they then establish that Thawne is considered highly respected in the scientific community in their time based on his work.
Basically it’s from a line Reverse Flash has said a few times “You may be a genius in the 21st century but I’m considered a genius in the future”.
And the movie would point out the hubris of that statement and why Reverse Flash isn’t actually as smart as he thinks he is. He’s far more knowledgeable, yes. But knowledge is not the same as intelligence or creativity.
Basically he’s the Rich Kid who got into Harvard and had an A+ average and went to all the really good private schools (he could even be someone in private school in the movie to drive home this point) while Barry is the poor kid who went to public school and had a B+ average cause he was bored with the material and wasn’t challenged enough and would rather work on stuff at home and do independent studies and take care of family and friends and all that and it’s frankly shocking he maintained a B+ average with all that was going on. And it takes quick problem solving skills to deal with a lot of things he has thrown his way.
And one of the reasons why intelligence vs knowledge is a good theme for such a movie is SPEEEEEEEED. That’s what intelligence is by definition: SPEED.
Knowledge is what you already know. It’s useful and when you run into a problem that you’re knowledgeable about you can solve it faster. But what happens when you are presented with a NEW problem that your knowledge can’t help you with very much? The speed at which you solve said problem is intelligence. Intelligence is just processing speed, knowledge is a backlog of examples and algorithms and all that built by and passed down by previous pioneers.
So, I think that would be a good foundation for the story.
He starts off in the future and is considered very knowledgeable and smart but he’s just using things he was taught. And he’s not exactly creative, he’s just taking things to their logical conclusion and using the scientific method to brute force out a bunch of tests until he finds an answer and he’s kinda obsessive about it and doesn’t put much thought into it really.
While Barry is actually a lot smarter, just doesn’t know as much (like seriously, Isaac Newton for example was probably smarter than most people alive today, but most people alive today know his theories on gravity are incorrect and Einstein’s disprove his. Doesn’t make us any more intelligent or creative than Newton, just more knowledgeable).
After that’s established you see him discover, via obsessive brute force, how the speed force works and how to make himself a speedster and he fucks it up and accidentally gets the negative speed force.
He meets Barry, does the whole thing where Barry puts him as the villain and him and Barry fight and he eventually dies, but he passes on notes to himself on how to beat Barry.
Then we start from near the beginning again, but go through the story a little faster (you’ve seen it before) and he finds his notes again and adds a few more later and loses to Barry again.
And this happens again and again until he realizes that his superior knowledge is not going to trump Barry’s superior intellect and creativity, but at least he can make his life a living hell.

I’m excited for the new DC movies. I love these characters and I cant wait to see what james gunn has planned for them.
My favourite flash is Walle West (from the animated tv show like you said). The scene where all the justice league is almost done for and he defeats brainiac all by himself is one of my favourite scenes. but I don’t even know either flash’s origin stories and so far Barry Allen looks like quite a cool character too
Clooney was like Office Jim as Reid Richards in Dr. Strange, just a fun one-off.

To me personally when Barry ends up in a universe where Clooney is Batman. I don’t think he changed anything or erased Affleck’s Batman I think he just went to a completely different universe where Clooney is at.
I'm a "Silver Ager", so my Flash is (& always will be) Barry Allen. Wally West will always be "Kid Flash". That being said, I did enjoy Wally as the Flash for the '90s and beyond, but was in 7th heaven with Barry's "Rebirth". Thanks Ryan for a well done explanation of what the end of the Flash movie means and all the possibilities open to Gunn's DCU.
I don't think any of the Justice League members will be in DCU movies. However, if they do it will only be in another timeline. Also, no sequel Flash movie. The director is already signed on for the new Batman Brave & Bold.
The ending was decent it could have been better ,but we will take it
I grew up on Wally West. Michael Rosenbaum as kid flash in Teen Titans and as Justice League Animated series Flash (my man did amazing as Lex Luthor, seriously best live-action onscreen Lex we've had). The only Barry comic series I own is Flashpoint and Rebirth. Since then I tend to just get Constantine comics now.
Man, I'd love it if Matt Letcher was cast as Eobard Thawne. Absolutely love it.
He was good in the TV show, but at 52 I'm sure they're going to go for someone younger.

In November he teased that he wants to do a crisis on infinite earths which would allow for a giant multiverse movie like the tv show did and it makes sense since there’s the main timeline then you have the elseworld/multiverse stories

The spaghetti analogy of time travel is crucial to understand. How cool would it be if the Reverse Flash was played by Grant Gustin, not as Eobard Thawne but as an evil variant of Barry? I know that Dark Flash was also a variant of Barry but I don't think that Dark Flash was evil per se, more like a misguided one. Once I saw the scar and noticed all the spikes sticking out, I immediately thought of Savitar - specifically like the CW Arrowverse I thought they were setting up for a potential sequel or a surprise main villain for this one. I wish they went into it a bit more Then I thought how crazy would it be if they ended up making Barry go back and literally kill his mom, becoming the DCEU’s version of the reverse flash. I enjoyed the Flash movie, to me it was an extension of the Synderverse rather than rebooting the DCU. If new actors will be involved with Gunn's universe then the Flash didn't really setup much other than the possibility of variants. I think the official reboot will start with the new Superman movie and will move away from the Synderverse.
I think the big team up movie is going to be based on Justice League New Frontier

That would be fun to see their reverse Flash. I worry about their Crisis event though. At least the Arrowverse has Oliver's sacrifice (and that it was predicted from Elseworlds where I have to think Dark Superman is where the CW was like okay, we have our Superman who is almost a better Clark/Kal. I am not sure who the DCEU has if they introduce Wally too early. I was never too committed to him in the Arrowverse, but he seems like he has to be related to Iris so they have to build that up more.
I imagine we will also just be waiting to her from Sasha's socials that she got a request to grow her hair because it sounds like they kind of rather plan to do either she arrives way early than Kal or she arrives much later when he is settled into the Kents so she lives her own life like in the show but maybe make her remember the time she was stuck in the Phantom Zone to give her more of an edge.

While I definitely enjoy the theory fun in your videos, I don't imagine there will be any more Barry in future films, thanks to Miller's criminal activities.
I only watched this one because it was made before the kidnapping, and Warner is distancing themselves from him other than just releasing the movie they had already made. Now, if they did actually make another film with him, I would boycott, and I imagine many others would too.
Of course, Barry could just be recast, but it's easier just to use one of the other Flash characters.

It was my understanding that this film was the end of the Snyderverse and our transition to the GunnVerse. I really doubt we'll see Ezra again. Clooney was a gag - you really think at this point in his career he'd sign on for more superhero films? He's a director now! The point of the end of the movie was that EVERYTHING is on the table for the future. Having Nick Cage in there was such a deep cut that I'm sure it was meant to really hammer the point the DC universe is all on the table now. This was such a fun movie and although Gunn wasn't fully involved, it had his fingerprints all over it. Hoping that DC turns it around.

I don't think there will be a sequel, certainly not with Miller & Clooney. Clooney was a throwaway gag because Gunn has no plans to go back there. Same with the upcoming Aquaman. Including them in this continuity shows that Aquaman will be the "final" film in the DCEU. Everything starts again with Blue Beetle.

*POTENTIAL SPOILER* in the animated DC movie "Justice League Dark: Apokolips War" the flash does indeed go back in time after strong encouragement from John Constantine because of how badly everything turned out in that timeline due to a battle with Apokolips. There is a follow up mini-sequel I haven't watched yet called "Constantine: The House of Mystery" that deals with the aftermath of those decisions.
Forgive the pun, but the story itself has legs, even if the actor(s) may not in the franchise.

I come here for the analysis and explanations, but I stay for Doug.
My fantasy booking is george clooney becomes the new batman for the "snyderverse" and he will train terry and we get batman beyond. Then the robert Pattinson batman will become the new main universe batman and then we get the new castings. Hopefully grant gustin as the flash. Then with the Snyderverse established and the new universe unfolding, we could build up the crisis on infinite earths.
Have most movies focus on the main universe and occasionally get a snyderverse elseworld movie
