I've made this keto meal many times using a dutch oven because I use the whole cabbage and onion ( a couple of cloves of garlic, as well). I love the larger batch because of the leftovers. Reheated with a fried egg on top, magnificent! Another perfect keto meal.

I've made this before but I dice up an apple as well and fry it with the cabbage and onions. Another way I've made it is after the sausage is done I pour V8 over the cabbage and onions and let that all cook down then stir in sausage. My family loves it.

That's sounds delicious....but apples are high in carbs - so someone on keto may not want to be tempted to find out how delicious it tastes. :-)

Oooh, love the V8 idea for a flavor change up. I’m a fan of the spicy hot V8. If I’m gonna have an apple, though, I’m gonna have it cold, raw, and savor every bite, as I stick to berries for my fruit (low carb) so apple is a rare treat.

I cook a variation of this recipe:
1 large head of Napa cabbage (chinese cabbage)
1-2 large Vidalia onions (I love onions)
1-2 large bell peppers (any color will work)
4+ cloves of minced garlic (1-2 tablespoons... or more) 😛
1 pound turkey kielbasa (I use Butterball brand)
A splash (about 4 ounces) of Apple Cider Vinegar, White Vinegar, or even Balsamic Vinegar
Bacon grease or Salt Pork Grease
Salt (usually not needed due to the fat) and Pepper to taste
Optional: A dash or two of Toasted Sesame Oil, a dash or two of Braggs Liquid Aminos, and a dash or two of red pepper chili flakes
Other Options: Kale, Bok Choy, Dandelion Greens, Leeks, Shallots, other types of cabbage, Summer Squash, Zucchini (courgettes), String Beans (especially Dilly Beans), etc.
      .
Since the kielbasa is fully cooked, you only need to get this to the point where the cabbage, onions and peppers are at a softness level you like.
      .
      Enjoy!
      .
      George (gen81465)

Why do you think it is not Keto?

    • @marysaylor8458
      @marysaylor8458 Год назад +1

@rosiebrusselmans6257 I didn't mean it isn't keto. I just didn't think about it being keto. I don't follow a keto diet. There's too much high cholesterol in my family history. My mother died of a stroke at age 57 her cholesterol was through the roof. The doctor told me and my siblings to always keep an eye on our cholesterol.

    • @gen81465
      @gen81465 Год назад

@@marysaylor8458 I'm 57 now, and had a stroke back in 2007 when I was 41, going on 42. I have been on a statin for my cholesterol (it was originally 220) for many years. Sadly, my cardiologist says that once you are on a statin, your body stops trying to regulate your cholesterol on its own, and you end up on the statin for life; regardless of how low your cholesterol goes (mine is now around 40, with 100-120 being normal). It's also too bad because I love grapefruit and grapefruit juice, but am not supposed to have it. My doctor did say that having one glassful on my birthday probably wouldn't cause sufficient toxic buildup of the statin in my system to affect me, but I can't have it on a regular basis.

The chicken juices go into the cabbage. You can swap out pork chops or your brats and you don't have to watch it or stir it. You can also swap out the cabbage for green beans.

Just keeping it very simple with a serving of meat with a side of steamed, buttered broccoli is my favorite keto meal. Be sure to get plenty of protein. As we get older, we need more protein to protect our muscle mass. Lots of people think we need less, but that's absolutely incorrect. We also need plenty of sodium when we are eating a ketogenic diet. The myth that sodium is bad for us has done as much to destroy health as the myth that cholesterol is bad has.
Edited to add...be sure you are eating real salt, not the processed iodized junk. The real salt has other minerals that work together with the sodium to do great things for your body.

      Thank you!
I do use Himalayan salt, that I have to grind.
Am I neurotic to think already ground Himalayan is cut with the garbage salt they want us to use?😉
And I lost weight eating eggs, cottage cheese, Swiss cheese, prosciutto, along with yogurt.
I was not well, took 5-6 months to recover,
But now I’m feeling & doing better after surgery, & I’d like to reach my goal, but eating what I was, is getting old.
      I appreciate your response!

@@MzladyGrinn, I don't know what to tell you about the salt you're using. If you are able, maybe get some Redmond Real Salt. That stuff is mined right here in the US, and it's really good stuff! I buy it in the 25-pound bags from a somewhat local Amish feed mill (it's food grade, not animal grade), and then divide it up and store it in glass jars with tight-fitting lids. I make similar skillet meal, and I'm not on a Keto diet. I don't have lard, so I use olive oil. I use minced garlic, cabbage and chicken sausage. I pop a lid on the pan at first to help steam the cabbage down, then remove to stir and get all the browned goodies on bottom. Also, if you aren't on Keto, you can add cubed potatoes to it. I zap them in the microwave till half done, then add to finish cooking and brown. The chicken sausage doesn't have as much salt and pepper, so I do add towards the end.

Tip -> If you put a lid on the cabbage and onion, it cooks much faster and has more liquid. This would also be delicious with corn bread.

I prefer it without the lid. We don’t enjoy the amount of extra liquid mixed in with the final result

One of our favorite meals! We do it with either sausage or kielbasa. I am a pepper person so I do add black pepper and we love crushed red pepper with it too. Sometimes onion and garlic powder. So easy and yummy!!

I am 76 years old and in south Louisiana we call this smothered cabbage and has been one of my favorite dishes all my life. The only difference is the addition of garlic, pepper and the meat we used most was rabbit. As a young child, my aunt would fix it for me when she knew we were coming. Still my favorite meal, but now use sausage, pickle meat or ham chunks instead.

Doing all that you guys do, you need all the energy you can get. That is awesome. I can look at food and gain weight. Lol. Wt loss is hard for me mainly because i can not exercise properly due to physical disabilities. Ido cook healthy for my household . Never beed a junk food junky, just cursed with being big boned and fluffy. I was always very active in my younger days out with my horses and friends but not anymore. I hate it but i am still going as much as possible. God bless you guys 💜🙏🏻. Love watching you guys .

Quite a fast and easy meal, Sarah.
I will try this as I was wondering what I was going to do with the cabbage I have in my fridge.
I have made your butternut squash soup a few times already and we love it.
I have a lot of puréed pumpkin from my garden and am going to try it with that as a substitute.
You look so happy in your new kitchen. Your cooking recipes are done well, keep ‘em coming!

I make a similar one pot dinner using kielbasa sausage, cabbage, and onions. I chop up the cabbage and put it in the pot with enough water to cover it and add 3 large chicken bullion cubes. Then I chop two onions coarsely and add them to the pot with a half stick of butter. I then slice two packs of sausage into 1/2 thick slices and add to the pot. Cook until the cabbage is tender and you have a tasty supper or lunch. We often serve this with corn muffins and it feeds six people. This recipe is versatile as you can substitute green beans for the cabbage and even add some potatoes if the mood suits you.

I agree this is a very good meal, I really enjoy cabbage, even just cabbage alone adding sausage just makes it better. Smoked sausage or hamburger meat with garlic, ginger and soy sauce is also delicious. Thanks for reminding me. Love and Blessings.❤️🌹
