@@henrythegreatamerican8136 ok the video should have just been the band performing but the song was their only 1 it is fantastic and Champlain nails it everytime I also like Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love I'm female I like love songs sue me LOL that being said I can appreciate their early stuff with Terry but I am 80s girl! This song is so out of Chicago's comfort zone, that it sounds like a Styx/REO Speedwagon power ballad instead; heck, the latter had come out with their "The Hits" album earlier in 1988, so I wonder why they didn't cut it?
I'm 51 and the 80s had the greatest music and I love listening to it and reminiscing the good times I had growing up in Arkansas and Missouri. The era might be gone but the music lives on!!!
I have to disagree. The 80s were the last decade of the Golden Age of music which peaked in the 70s. I was there for both of them and once electronics and autotune became common in the 80s, true music died. I prefer real people with real instruments and nothing but talent
A completely different sound to their previous songs, like a different band, style, like Cherish the love song, keyboards especially. This is a brilliant tune.

My mom loved Chicago, I remember driving in the car as she sang her lungs out to this song! I didn’t realize then the significance of that moment until now almost two years after her passing! RIP MOMMY LOVE & MISS YOU! Thank you for these beautiful memories ❤️
When this song skyrocketed to the #1 spot on Billboard, many people who had never heard of Chicago instantly fell in love with Chicago, and those who had loved Chicago since it’s inception, couldn’t believe it was them because the group had not had a hit without Cetera or Scheff since the early 70s. Peter Cetera had been the de facto voice, and with the advent of music videos on MTV and VH1, the face of Chicago, an inconvenient consequence of the medium and a thorn in the side of most other members of the band who did not want any one member of the band to outshine the rest. The band had been struggling with the death of Terry Kath since early 1978. They lost the soul of the band, she’d their first producer and struggled for several years with drug addiction and a fan base that wanted more ballads than their avant garde roots of the past. Seeing the future of music videos and wanting to make a name for himself as a part-time solo artist, Peter Cetera took the lead and was the first member of the band to clean up his life by quitting the drug scene that had plagued the band for the better part of the past decade. He also lost weight and got into the best shape of his life. He had recently gotten married, was starting a family and wanted to put his best foot forward in order to bring the band back up and to plant the seeds for his eventual departure from the group. This culminated in the band’s ultimatum to Cetera to either sign a contract of compliance, or leave the group. Cetera, for better or worse, decided to leave Chicago upon the completion of their 1985 world tour and embark on his solo career and a decidedly less demanding schedule that would afford him more time to spend with his family while he worked. Jason Scheff joined the band in 1986 after the band tried to find a replacement for Cetera and subsequently record their new album, Chicago 18. Scheff was a very good fit for the band, being an outstanding bass player and the tenor voice Chicago needed after losing Cetera. Although Cetera’s departure was abrupt, Scheff and keyboardist Bill Champlin were able to take Chicago into a slightly different direction and kept the band’s success intact until the early 90s when rock and roll gave way to the angst sound of grunge. By the mid-90s, there was essentially no market for the “Chicago Sound” on top 40 radio. At that time, Chicago transitioned into a touring band with a catalog of hits that would still fill stadiums and arenas. The band toured relentlessly, playing their greatest hits and releasing an occasional new song or two on different iterations of their greatest hits albums. Today, the band only has three original members who still tour with the group. They still tour relentlessly and will still fill smaller venues with their die hard fans.
Michael, when too many original band members quit, die, or get fired, then it's often a sign that it's time to hang up the guitars and hit the showers. Otherwise, they can come across as their own tribute band.
I'm one of their die hard fans and I finally got to see them in 2019 in July. They were great! I had a blast with the love of my life. We had 3rd row floor seats. Was hoping Peter Certera would have showed up and crashed the concert. That would have been so cool!!!!! I use to see Peter Cetera at my job ever so often. One day I said hi as he walked in. He never said ,hi. So that night I went to his fb page. I said to him on his page, it doesn't hurt to say, hi! A few weeks later I was working at my job. This guy walked in. He said, hi! He smiled. I was off guard and surprised, to say the least, it was the PETER CETERA I was working at a Home Depot. I was cashiering. I looked up and there was Peter Cetera again! He was at the front of the door, heading out. He nodded his head and smiled. Once again, he blew me away with his appearance, and waited for me to look up to let me know he was there. He nodded, and I was totally stunned!!!!!! He's a really sweet caring guy.❤
Is this the David Foster era that killed the horns and effectively, in essence Chicago? There may be only 3 original members left, but 2 are horns and one a lead singer. When they are featured, they're enough for me!

The first was analog… the second was solid state recording and the third was digital thank heavens for little Jason c D. Who created it for all your personal music enjoyment back then🤗😁🥳😃🤔😊🥲☃️🚔
From SongFacts... This song was written by Diane Warren, one of the most successful songwriters of her era and a very versatile tunesmith: her hits include "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" for Aerosmith, "Love Will Lead You Back" for Taylor Dayne, and "Have You Ever?" for Brandy. Warren says the song was inspired by a friend who worked in her building. This woman had divorced her husband, but they agreed to still be friends. It was clear that the guy was hoping to get back together, and he was devastated when he found out she was going to marry someone else.
she stole the chorus melody and some lyrics from some dude according to him ok idk he´s should be still on youtube somewhere with his video of his side of the story idk something like same record company as her and he was turned down and some time later he hears ´look away´ everywhere hehehh..
Here's another interesting tidbit: They offered this song to Cheap Trick, along with The Flame, before Chicago. Needless to say, Cheap Trick didn't want it. (Imagine if Cheap Trick had recorded this & left Chicago to record The Flame!)
@@RumTumJPM It was also pitched to Europe, but Joey Tempest declined. God forbid he record one cut where he didn't get writing credits. They could have used this single. Out of This World was a tepid follow up in the States.
Same here . I sure missed those days with that music . They don’t make music like this no more2023” . I’m from the 80s my self and I will always love this music no matter what
Me too Just seems like there was much more of a compassion back. Then. Than there is nowadays everything is race-related gaze bisexual all of these things. It didn't matter back then you. Were who you were you? Are who you are and in the eighty's in any better ticket matter? But or maybe I'm wrong. But I totally am with you on that wish. I could climb in the summer these eighty videos as well
I just found out that this is Chicago's number one selling single... I can honestly say I love Chicago (not a super fan by any means) and I have never heard this song before...
I remember my parents got me a new Ford radio with a cassette player for the Escort I drove to college in 1983. I was so excited to play Chicago, Air Supply, and Barry Manilow everyday as i drove back and forth to college.
I played the crap out of this song in 88' when it came out! I was 13 and 34 years later I still love this song like it's 1988 all over again!!! Chicago is by far one of the best bands ever & this song will never get old!! 💕
I see a lot of comments in here who were in their teens and youths back when this song was released. 80s song easily makes me envious of those people who were born back then. So many good songs back then
You said it senorita .Awesome song and video .There is a song By the name of "INVISIBLE" by Alison Moyet .same type of meaning for women instead in the song.
Same here --- this song came out when I was a freshman in college --- still remember all those great times of going to football games and parties --- single cute girls everywhere --- hookin' up for a night was so common and fun --- it seemed like every day was heaven on Earth
In 1988, I had been married for 9 years and my wife and I were going through a rough patch. This song came out and just listening to it I knew I would never be happy without her or be happy with anyone else. And here we are in 2024 still together and going strong. The best music can and does change lives!
I'm constantly reminded that I grew up in one of the greatest music eras of all time. I first heard this song after a break-up in high school more years ago than I wanna count.
I think that you’re wrong, it can hold a candle, but only for about 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 seconds. Not very long, yea I guess you’re right.
I just heard this one on my way home from an event. AS a father it hurts me to the core that my now 18 year old daughter refuses to talk to me, but for me this is the message I would give her. I dont want her to see her father hurting, just to look away.
This takes me back…so many broken hearts…I have not seen the video in about 30+ years. I came here from the professor of rock and he mentioned this was almost recorded by cheap trick, it they went with their 1988 song the Flame. I think both bands got the right songs for them.
They say that the song that was #1 on your 14th birthday defines your life, and the day I turned 14 (December 13th, 1988), this song was #1. This leads me to the inescapable conclusion that I am old as dirt.
I'm 42 years old & have always loved Chicago from a child & to be honest this is my mom's influence on me & that I was always a fan of the 80's. Of course aside from "if you leave me now" & "color my world"I was more into their stuff from the 80's, this is 1 of my most favorite songs from them. Chicago is one of those bands that could never put out a horrible piece of music no matter the decade 🙂♥️.
"Look Away" When you called me up this morning Told me 'bout the new love you found I said "I'm happy for you I'm really happy for you" Found someone else I guess I won't be coming 'round I guess it's over, baby It's really over, baby, whoa And from what you said I know you've gotten over me It'll never be the way it used to be So if it's gotta be this way Don't worry, baby, I can take the news okay [Chorus:] But if you see me walking by And the tears are in my eyes Look away, baby, look away If we meet on the streets someday And I don't know what to say Look away, baby, look away Don't look at me I don't want you to see me this way When we both agreed as lovers We were better off as friends That's how it had to be Yeah, that's how it had to be I tell you I'm fine But sometimes I just pretend Wish you were holding me Wish you were still holding me, whoa I just never thought That I would be replaced so soon I wasn't prepared to hear those words from you I know I wanted to be free Yeah, baby, this is how we wanted it to be [Chorus 2x] When you called me up this morning Told me 'bout the new love you found I said "I'm happy for you I'm really happy for you"
I am 43 years old and this song definitely takes me back to a certain time in a certain place, with a certain young lady.......LOOK AWAY, BABY LOOK AWAY.
2024 and I am 22 years old and was not around yet when Chicago was making music. I had feelings for someone in high school and I never told her how I felt. She found someone else and ended up choosing the wrong guy and I relate a lot to this song because I was physically and emotionally depressed because I blew who I thought was the one for me. But the years have gone on I recognized she was not the one for me and I know that I will find the one for me soon and she’ll feel lucky to have me.
The number 1 song for that year! I can still hear Shadoe Stevens introducing this on AT40 back then! Behind every hit song, was a DJ's banter. I used to record the entire countdown on tapes just to hear how the DJ's spoke....Casey Kasem and Shadoe Stevens. That's how I kept the pulse of pop from coast to coast week after week back then!!!
The ultimate break up song of all time. Hits differently listening to this as an adult (and several breakups under my belt). I loved this song as a teenager.
i think its because most of their songs had too many horn instruments and wernt rock enough for me, plus this song was attached to a great love turned heartbreak so i have to love it, lol @@herpaderp-bp4pe

It's really over, baby, whoa-oh
And from what you said
I know you've gotten over me

So if it's gotta be this way
Don't worry, baby
I can take the news, okay
But if you see me walking by
And the tears are in my eyes
Look away, baby, look away
If we meet on the streets someday
And I don't know what to say
Look away, baby, look away
Don't look at me
I don't want you to see me this way
When we both agreed as lovers
We were better off as friends
That's how it had to be
Yeah, that's how it had to be
I tell you I'm fine
But sometimes I just pretend
Wish you were holding me
Wish you were still holding me, oh-oh, oh
I just never thought
That I would be replaced so soon
I wasn't prepared
To hear those words from you
I know I wanted to be free
Yeah, baby, this is how we wanted it to be
But if you see me walking by
And the tears are in my eyes
Look away, baby, look away
And if we meet on the streets someday
And I don't know what to say
Look away, baby, look away
Don't look at me
I don't want you to see me this way
If you see me walking by

Thanks for the info
she stole the chorus melody and some lyrics from some dude according to him ok idk he´s should be still
on youtube somewhere with his video of his side of the story idk something like same record company
as her and he was turned down and some time later he hears ´look away´ everywhere hehehh..

I’m from the 80s my self and I will always love this music no matter what
I wish I could climb into these great 80's videos. I miss the days when people were people and this country wasn't so screwed up.
I could climb in the summer these eighty videos as well
@@carin9568 I wish someone would invent a time machine so I could go back to the 80s
Quien perdió peso fue champlim..no cetera
Lol rose-colored reactionary nostalgia is always good for a laugh
Sadly, the "greed is good" mentality from the 80s is what got us to where we are.
That said, the 80s were great.
Blows my mind that this winds up being the #1 song of 1989. Worthy of being a #1 hit? Yes. For the entire year? No. I'm a Chicago fan, admitting this.
People go nuts for a synthesized glockenschpiel. Regular ones too. Don't ask why.
I just found out that this is Chicago's number one selling single... I can honestly say I love Chicago (not a super fan by any means) and I have never heard this song before...
There are so many other Chicago songs that should be #1! I happen to love Chicago. Maybe a lot of people were breaking up that year.
There are just too many great songs in '89 that it just doesn't seem possible. If you don't agree with this comment...just look away.
Love this classic song and as far as I am concerned this band is awesome. ❤
Chicago, Eagles, Boston. There will never be music like that again. We lived in a very special time for music.
Bill Champin and Jason Scheff should be in Hall of Fame also. They carried the torch and all the pressure of succeeding with a great band.
I remember my parents got me a new Ford radio with a cassette player for the Escort I drove to college in 1983. I was so excited to play Chicago, Air Supply, and Barry Manilow everyday as i drove back and forth to college.
03:27 -- The face you make when the producers insist you replace your saxophone with a guitar for the music video.
I played the crap out of this song in 88' when it came out! I was 13 and 34 years later I still love this song like it's 1988 all over again!!! Chicago is by far one of the best bands ever & this song will never get old!! 💕
This song is in a special part of my heart.
I don't remember this on the radio or MTV! 1988?!
I was 7 when this song debuted. I love this type of music
Me too! I’m ‘76 and Chicago my jam then and now in car cranked up loud!! ❤❤
Chantel, you are exactly right. Chicago's legacy and body of music is at the top.
I'll never find a new love. But you have so ok. I wish you the best.
Odd name and timing. New accounts are always suspect. Consider your comment a success.
Bill Champlin has one of the greatest voices in rock.
Roobulator you're absolutely right about that!
Absolutely!
So right!
I see a lot of comments in here who were in their teens and youths back when this song was released. 80s song easily makes me envious of those people who were born back then. So many good songs back then
I'm 56 and still rocking out
Miss the 80's OMG
You said it senorita .Awesome song and video .There is a song By the name of "INVISIBLE" by Alison Moyet .same type of meaning for women instead in the song.
You and me, Rach :)
🧡❤️🌹
Same here --- this song came out when I was a freshman in college --- still remember all those great times of going to football games and parties --- single cute girls everywhere --- hookin' up for a night was so common and fun --- it seemed like every day was heaven on Earth
The most bizarrest the woman changing clothes in the elevator
In 1988, I had been married for 9 years and my wife and I were going through a rough patch. This song came out and just listening to it I knew I would never be happy without her or be happy with anyone else. And here we are in 2024 still together and going strong. The best music can and does change lives!
so happy for you-you are dead right about music changing lives.
Man, I was 12 years old when I first heard this album. I fell in love with the whole album.. Miss those good ol days.
I think this came out in '89? I was 11 and my mom wouldn't let me watch the video. I loved this song. The whole album was great, I agree.
I was around the same age I think lol so long ago, I feel ancient lol
Your comment was two years ago but it still rings true today.
@@mariapalladino2473 why your mom don't let you wat h this video?
@@mariapalladino2473 It came out in spring, 1988.
Great tune by a great band. Top single of 89'
Yup
Chicago had the best instrumentals, vocals and lyrics.
They still have.
I'm constantly reminded that I grew up in one of the greatest music eras of all time. I first heard this song after a break-up in high school more years ago than I wanna count.
Music today can't hold a candle.
The problem is this.

Tresean Cann haha! I clicked to see. Couldn’t be more accurate! ✌️
I think that you’re wrong, it can hold a candle, but only for about 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 seconds. Not very long, yea I guess you’re right.

@@timmy38583 It was the best time to be alive in the entire 20th Century!

Still Hits! The 80s power ballads never get old...
Congratulations, Chicago! You guys are getting inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame! Better late than never.
+Pamela Schonour Amen to that Pamela! Congrats also to Deep Purple! Finally some great rock getting to Cleveland!
Along with Peter Cetera, they were all inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Pamela Schonour They Deserve It
RRHOF is a joke. Madonna got in before Chicago. That Madonna is considered "Rock N' Roll" itself delegitimizes it.
thats awesome i love chicago. man i wish terry kath was still around. he was a good gutair player. congrats chicago
This song is so sentimental
Bill Champlin did an excellent job singing this song! I love his voice!💕
I just heard this one on my way home from an event. AS a father it hurts me to the core that my now 18 year old daughter refuses to talk to me, but for me this is the message I would give her. I dont want her to see her father hurting, just to look away.
♥️♥️
Reach out to her
I think I'm in the same spot with my 19 year old daughter....not estranged but not talking.
This takes me back…so many broken hearts…I have not seen the video in about 30+ years. I came here from the professor of rock and he mentioned this was almost recorded by cheap trick, it they went with their 1988 song the Flame. I think both bands got the right songs for them.
This song is for everyone that's had their heart ripped out breaking up.
The best of Chicago da Davide Barone Italy
Sing it Bill!
They say that the song that was #1 on your 14th birthday defines your life, and the day I turned 14 (December 13th, 1988), this song was #1.
This leads me to the inescapable conclusion that I am old as dirt.
RIP LOOK AWAY GIRL TAWNY KITAEN (1961-2021)).)
a song i totally forgot existed.... But if you see me walking by And the tears are in my eyes
Look away, baby, look away....the best....
I am having hell getting over a 15 year relationship. This is somehow crippling & healing at the same time.
You'll never truly get over it. Heal the best you can.
Time will make it easier, and don’t think too much on it. It takes two
☆LONG LIVE THE 80'S☆
So true love this song it says it all❤
Baby Look Away, Classic...
People tell me I shouldn't listen to Chicago's music so much but it's a hard habit to break
"Look Away"
When you called me up this morning
Told me 'bout the new love you found
I said "I'm happy for you
I'm really happy for you"
Found someone else
I guess I won't be coming 'round
I guess it's over, baby
It's really over, baby, whoa
And from what you said
I know you've gotten over me
It'll never be the way it used to be
So if it's gotta be this way
Don't worry, baby, I can take the news okay
[Chorus:]
But if you see me walking by
And the tears are in my eyes
Look away, baby, look away
If we meet on the streets someday
And I don't know what to say
Look away, baby, look away
Don't look at me
I don't want you to see me this way
When we both agreed as lovers
We were better off as friends
That's how it had to be
Yeah, that's how it had to be
I tell you I'm fine
But sometimes I just pretend
Wish you were holding me
Wish you were still holding me, whoa
I just never thought
That I would be replaced so soon
I wasn't prepared to hear those words from you
I know I wanted to be free
Yeah, baby, this is how we wanted it to be
[Chorus 2x]
When you called me up this morning
Told me 'bout the new love you found
I said "I'm happy for you
I'm really happy for you"
Thank you for sharing the lyrics.
thank you very much 💕
I am 43 years old and this song definitely takes me back to a certain time in a certain place, with a certain young lady.......LOOK AWAY, BABY LOOK AWAY.
Probably like 45 now
I'm a 48 yr old woman this song takes me back to a lot of things 😊
Absolutely magical
If you're here, congrats you've got a great music taste
Memories of the skating rink and holding hands during the "couples only" song.
Chicago is amazing band. I love Peter Cetera & CO. ❤️
I just heard this song walking my dog and for the life of me could not remember who made this...a forgotten Chicago era!
For some reason, this song came to my head right now, after over 25 years...
1:37 I love this scene. The music goes great with the video of the woman walking in slow motion.
A beautiful KickAss CHICAGO song..
Keep em comin
The number 1 song for that year!
I can still hear Shadoe Stevens introducing this on AT40 back then!
Behind every hit song, was a DJ's banter.
I used to record the entire countdown on tapes just to hear how the DJ's spoke....Casey Kasem and Shadoe Stevens.
That's how I kept the pulse of pop from coast to coast week after week back then!!!
No Rick Dees?
@@RoadCone411 over here in Malaysia back then, we only had AT40 with Casey Kasem and then Shadoe Stevens.
This song just takes you back when life was good an easy. Before the bullshit started an we had to grow up, iam speaking for the men.

Omg my heart. Brings me back to my teenage heartbreak💔
The ultimate break up song of all time. Hits differently listening to this as an adult (and several breakups under my belt). I loved this song as a teenager.
It's been 35 Years since I've loved this song... Chicago are one of Greatest Bands ever in the History of music.
never was much of a Chicago fan, but this song is one of my all time favs
Hello Jane how are you doing
Uh how can you not like their 70s songs but you like this ?😂😭
i think its because most of their songs had too many horn instruments and wernt rock enough for me, plus this song was attached to a great love turned heartbreak so i have to love it, lol

The song that was #1 the day I was born - Dec 22, 1988!
This song and The Flame by Cheap Trick have a similar sad vibe! Good stuff!
The best. They don't make music like this anymore. Back in the simple days.
It's truly Amazing how the Power of Love can be transformed from one to another with a brilliant Melodic Melody as this. "Happy for ya, I'm really happy for ya."
