I just got a used 23" AMT scroll saw (4671) off craiglist. It's a big heavy beast, built like a tank! This is my first saw as well. Your videos are very helpful.
Absolutely the most informative videos on using the scroll saw I have come across. Telling how to do something is one thing, but you have gone way further by not only explaining how to make cuts, but actually explaining as you are doing the cuts yourself! As others have stated, your videos are fantastic!!! At the moment, my brand new scroll saw (purchased at my request by my husband) is still neatly boxed in the back of my SUV. I have such great plans but, to be honest, I've never worked with a tool other than a rechargeable screwdriver and--truth be told--am a bit leery of getting a splinter. Ha! Your videos have made my big plans seem do-able, and I most definitely will take the pattern exam. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your tips and expertise!
lol...I'm glad I could motivate you to open the box! You will be fine, it's a fun machine to operate once you get over the initial nervousness over with. Make a couple copies of the exam and don't worry if you mess up, that's what it's for, nobody expects you to make perfect cuts the first time you turn the machine on. Ohh, if you do get a splinter, just pull it out with a pair of tweezers and cut on....have fun...Bob

For all of us their work is very rewarding and beautiful. I have a scroll saw Makita SJ401 for over five years, is against because he could not do anything, always breaking the blades. After watching many of his videos I realized that my mistakes were the blades of Makita, which are only for straight cuts. They break very easily, and do not allow curved cuts mainly rotating the workpiece on its axis. Ordered new blades and hope to resume the study, much based on your help. Your part 3 video was extremely helpful for someone who just received an old scrollsaw and has no knowledge of scroll saws. Thanks. I hope you make more videos. I have a mastercraft 16in scrollsaw and without the manual, I have no idea how to change the blades, fix the tension or the little tube which I believe is to send air but don't know if it works... so you see, I have alot to learn. Still searching the internet for the manual.

I've really enjoyed watching your videos and am hoping they are going to help me as I start scrolling for the first time. Picked up a used Hitachi CW40, that seems to be a decent saw. Have had alot of trouble getting the pinless blades installed. Every time I tried tensioning the blade, the top arm would just break free. Did not think I had all that much tension on it. Have a #5 blade in it, and it doesn't seem to want to cut curves as easily as you seem to. Going to go through everything tonight again and see if I can't figure out where I am making a mistake. Feel like I should be able to put more tension on the blade, and get rid of the side to side movement.
Jeff Krayenvenger , are you loosening the tension before you insert the blade? Sometimes it seems like the tension is loose when you insert the blade, but you haven't.
Thanks for a most informative tutorial, just the ticket for newbies like me. Just received my new Dremel MS20 Moto Saw. Not got a lot of room in my shed now as it's full of railway etc but the Dremel is small and fits on what bit of worktop I've got left. Mine has pin blades. Will these need to be stretched prior to using etc.

Your channel has been the handiest thing I've ran across since....well, since my husband got me a scroll saw!! LOL Our $2,700 deck set (6 top table, lounger & 4 top bar) had seen better days after 5 yrs of Montana. We have a gorgeous 1200sq ft ground level deck that's also taken a beating. I spent the better.part of this summer fixing and refinishing (repairing, sanding, sealing and DeckOver) a deck that cost me thrice the deck set, yet lve let it go 5 yrs with NO maintenance. 😫😫. I managed to salvage the deck with an entire summer, a hell of a lot of time,blood sweat &....you get the idea. Not to mention the couple THOUSAND. Why? All because I was lazy and did not do the upkeep that is ALWAYS required on a yearly basis, for wood!!! I knew better too! Anyhow...after a summer of not-so-much lovin and a total butt rob of my piggy bank, the tattered deck furniture was THAT much more glaringly hoopty , yet no WAY in my budget. ! So I hit Pinterest with a cold one and a notepad. A few short weeks In and I'm almost finished with 'stage 1' of the deck set rehab. Stripping out all the cloth(which is a HEAVY duty outdoor vinyl type stuff) and replacing it with what seems like ENDLESS slats of 1x3's(182 to be exact) I did this RIGHT too. I treated the wood with a high gloss, white exterior paint. 3 coats per slat...front and back..ALL by hand. 🙄. And because I sanded all the frames and painted them a 'Patriot Blue' ( for the MAGA theme of my 'new' deck) I painted the ends of each slat the same blue. (That's 364 'end caps Also all by hand and 3 coats). I was SO EXCITE to finally assemble!! And discovered on the FIRST chair, that I'd somehow miscalculated the number of slats X distance between each one X # needed per chair= 5 inch gap too small for the allotted 14th slat yet 4 inches wider than planned spacing. And so....with the spare plank per chair, I decided to get ridiculous. LOL. And sketched a design of 7 stars, point to to point,onto each spare plank, with a 3 inch blank space on either end. Those blank ends will be cut lengthwise on.the 3 inches per end ONLY, down to one inch wide while the stars are cut at needed height to fit unintended negative space on each chair, while leaving the appropriate spacing between. Whew!😌. TMI eh?? Point of my long ass story is...I went at a couple of these 'custom' planks with a Dremel. Ya, 1/2 my bit kit later..it did NOT work...lol. So the hubby bought me a scroll saw!!! Of which I'd never touched one in my life!! This is where YOU came in Bob! And betwixt you and your wonderfully academic videos....I've not ONLY created the snazziest one-of-a-kind patriotic/Americana deck set, but I'm OBSESSED!! I feel like I could RULE THE WORLD with my beloved scroll saw!? OHHHH THE PLANS WE'VE MADE!!! HDTV CAN SUCK IT! THANK YOU BOB!

I'm brand new to this. While watching another video a guy was saying he tunes his blades to D. For me also not having a lick of musical background. Although it makes sense to me it's still nothing for me.
These were great, thank you! I bought a cheap Harbor Freight scroll saw for cutting out circuit boards, along with aluminum and wood. Mine is a pin style blade holder, where it has pins at the ends sticking through the blade. Blade tension and speed was where I was struggling, along with the obligatory cutting straight lines. These videos helped give me things to keep in mind. A few questions, for cutting aluminum or brass, do I need more teeth or less? My feeling is that it shouldn't make a huge difference except in the quality of the cut edge. Also, an issue I'm having with mine is that when cutting thin aluminum (1/16"), it catches on the blade and lifts from the table, I have the really press down hard on it to keep it from doing that. It doesn't do it all the time, just sometimes, but it's annoying. What might be causing that, blade or speed or my lack of skill?
Hi Halo, congrats on your new saw, if you wanted to, you can find conversion kits online that will convert pinned blade holders to pinless blade holders. As for metal cutting, there are pinless blades made specifically for soft metals, and yes they do have more teeth like hacksaws do. I can't say I have ever seen metal cutting blades for pinned blades. Good luck and have fun...Bob

Hello, thank you for your Scroll Saw Tutorials they have been very useful to me as a beginner. I am wondering however, how to set the degrees on my scroll saw. I have a Dremel 16 inch 2 speed model 1672 and I am wanting to make this Heart candle holder bowl and it states I need to set my table at a 1 1/2 degree angle. Jeff Munce Hey Jeff, welcome to the world of scrolling.Under the round table is a star shaped thumb screw. Turn it to the left to loosen it, than you should notice the round table is loose. If you look under the table you will see that where the star thumbscrew is there should also be scale with numbers indicating degrees of angel from 0 to 45 degrees. With the table loose press down on the left half of the table until the indicator line reads between 1 and 2 degrees, than re-tighten the star shaped thumb screw and now your table is set to cut a 1.5 degree angle into your project. Before you cut your project you need to test cut into a piece of scrap wood first to make sure your angle is correct.

Can you cut 2 inch thick wood with the scroll saw? Or is a band saw better for 2 inch wood? I want to make snowman crafts, so wood with some curves to it that's 2 inches thick

tami price Hi Tami, my very first scroll saw was a $10.00 scroll saw that I found on craigslist, I used it for two years before upgrading, and I still have it for emergency back up. So yes, starting with a used saw is something I would recommend doing. I would keep my eye out on your local Craigslist to see what kind of scroll saws pop up. what are the differences between pinned blades vs pinless blades? i was surfing amazon and saw a lot of people complaining about cheap scroll saws that cant hold pinless blades. what are the advantages of pinless blade i dont understand im new to this.
insanet3 Pinned blades have a small pin going horizontally through the top and bottom of the blade to allow for installation on the scroll saw, pinless blades do not need the pin to be installed on the saw. Most scrollsaw projects involve very small and detailed internal cuts that require very small holes to be drilled in the project to feed the blade through, usually 1/16th" or smaller. Because of the pins on a pinned blade, you must drill much larger holes in your project to fit the pin through, usually about 1/4" diameter. This is just too big to make detailed projects. If you are making just external cuts, a pinned blade is fine, if you want to make detailed projects you will need pinless blades. Some scroll saws can use both types of blades while some only take pinned blades and some take only pinless blades. It is important that you know what you are going to be using the saw for before you purchase a saw. One type of blade is not necessarily better than the other, but a saw that takes pinless blades is much more versatile and is usually a much better choice in the long run.
how many TPI were you blades for this video, it seemed like it made some pretty small turns ect. would that be the 15-28 type one? Im just getting started and I bet im going to break some
Hi Kelly, I have never found the teeth per inch rating very helpful for picking blades. I learned a while ago to keep it simple, 95% of my cutting is done with a #3,#5 or #7 Flying Dutchman blade mikesworkshop.com/collections/blades/products/ultra-reverse. The chances are pretty good that no matter what I cut, I can do it with one of those three blades, regardless of thickness or hardness of the wood. Because there are so many different options for scroll saw blades, people do tend to overthink blades, my advice, just get some blades and enjoy making your projects, most of all, relax, have fun and be patient with yourself. You will be as good as me in no time...Bob
scott garvey Hey Scott, thanks. I had the old Delta as a backup saw for a few years, never used it much but it was an adequate saw. A variable speed is a bit better than a two speed, but by no means is it a deal breaker. If you are new to scrolling and this is going to be your 1st saw, then it's a good saw to start with. It takes a special tool to change the blades and is a bit cumbersome to get use to, but that's just an annoyance. Make sure you secure it to a nice solid surface to help cut down on vibration. I've seen these saws in my local Craigslist ads for about $50- $60 which would be worth the money. Good luck.
gotcha bob...yup...lol,,that is where I found it on CL for 60 bucks !! I also saw the dremel motosaw I think it is,,,smaller...hasa mini table ..but seems like it works fairly well with balsa and small stuff . That was what I was doing,,ship modeling ,, have you any thoughts on those saws...i think u can pick them up for 100 bucks or so at lowes or HD .
scott garvey The motosaw is merely a toy, you can do the same thing with the Delta that you can do with a motosaw and a lot more. I see no practical use for it other than cutting balsa wood.

I spent the better.part of this summer fixing and refinishing (repairing, sanding, sealing and DeckOver) a deck that cost me thrice the deck set, yet lve let it go 5 yrs with NO maintenance. 😫😫. I managed to salvage the deck with an entire summer, a hell of a lot of time,blood sweat &....you get the idea. Not to mention the couple THOUSAND. Why? All because I was lazy and did not do the upkeep that is ALWAYS required on a yearly basis, for wood!!! I knew better too!
Anyhow...after a summer of not-so-much lovin and a total butt rob of my piggy bank, the tattered deck furniture was THAT much more glaringly hoopty , yet no WAY in my budget. !
So I hit Pinterest with a cold one and a notepad. A few short weeks In and I'm almost finished with 'stage 1' of the deck set rehab. Stripping out all the cloth(which is a HEAVY duty outdoor vinyl type stuff) and replacing it with what seems like ENDLESS slats of 1x3's(182 to be exact)
I did this RIGHT too. I treated the wood with a high gloss, white exterior paint. 3 coats per slat...front and back..ALL by hand. 🙄. And because I sanded all the frames and painted them a 'Patriot Blue' ( for the MAGA theme of my 'new' deck) I painted the ends of each slat the same blue. (That's 364 'end caps
Also all by hand and 3 coats).
I was SO EXCITE to finally assemble!!
And discovered on the FIRST chair, that I'd somehow miscalculated the number of slats X distance between each one X # needed per chair= 5 inch gap too small for the allotted 14th slat yet 4 inches wider than planned spacing.
And so....with the spare plank per chair, I decided to get ridiculous. LOL.
And sketched a design of 7 stars, point to to point,onto each spare plank, with a 3 inch blank space on either end. Those blank ends will be cut lengthwise on.the 3 inches per end ONLY, down to one inch wide while the stars are cut at needed height to fit unintended negative space on each chair, while leaving the appropriate spacing between.
Whew!😌. TMI eh?? Point of my long ass story is...I went at a couple of these 'custom' planks with a Dremel. Ya, 1/2 my bit kit later..it did NOT work...lol. So the hubby bought me a scroll saw!!!

I have a saw with a t-shank blade. How do I do cuts that require the blade to be removed and put in? Drill a larger hole to fit the blade through?
I'm brand new to this. While watching another video a guy was saying he tunes his blades to D. For me also not having a lick of musical background. Although it makes sense to me it's still nothing for me.

These were great, thank you! I bought a cheap Harbor Freight scroll saw for cutting out circuit boards, along with aluminum and wood. Mine is a pin style blade holder, where it has pins at the ends sticking through the blade. Blade tension and speed was where I was struggling, along with the obligatory cutting straight lines. These videos helped give me things to keep in mind. A few questions, for cutting aluminum or brass, do I need more teeth or less? My feeling is that it shouldn't make a huge difference except in the quality of the cut edge. Also, an issue I'm having with mine is that when cutting thin aluminum (1/16"), it catches on the blade and lifts from the table, I have the really press down hard on it to keep it from doing that. It doesn't do it all the time, just sometimes, but it's annoying. What might be causing that, blade or speed or my lack of skill?
Hi Halo, congrats on your new saw, if you wanted to, you can find conversion kits online that will convert pinned blade holders to pinless blade holders. As for metal cutting, there are pinless blades made specifically for soft metals, and yes they do have more teeth like hacksaws do. I can't say I have ever seen metal cutting blades for pinned blades. Good luck and have fun...Bob

Hello, thank you for your Scroll Saw Tutorials they have been very useful to me as a beginner. I am wondering however, how to set the degrees on my scroll saw. I have a Dremel 16 inch 2 speed model 1672 and I am wanting to make this Heart candle holder bowl and it states I need to set my table at a 1 1/2 degree angle. I am not knowledgeable about how to do that. Can you help? Thank you.

Jeff Munce Hey Jeff, welcome to the world of scrolling.Under the round table is a star shaped thumb screw. Turn it to the left to loosen it, than you should notice the round table is loose. If you look under the table you will see that where the star thumbscrew is there should also be scale with numbers indicating degrees of angel from 0 to 45 degrees. With the table loose press down on the left half of the table until the indicator line reads between 1 and 2 degrees, than re-tighten the star shaped thumb screw and now your table is set to cut a 1.5 degree angle into your project. Before you cut your project you need to test cut into a piece of scrap wood first to make sure your angle is correct.

What brand saw do you recommend
Can you cut 2 inch thick wood with the scroll saw? Or is a band saw better for 2 inch wood? I want to make snowman crafts, so wood with some curves to it that's 2 inches thick
Yes, you can, however it is very difficult and a slow process, I would not recommend it. A band saw will make much easier work of it. Good luck!

tami price Hi Tami, my very first scroll saw was a $10.00 scroll saw that I found on craigslist, I used it for two years before upgrading, and I still have it for emergency back up. So yes, starting with a used saw is something I would recommend doing. I would keep my eye out on your local Craigslist to see what kind of scroll saws pop up. what are the differences between pinned blades vs pinless blades? i was surfing amazon and saw a lot of people complaining about cheap scroll saws that cant hold pinless blades. what are the advantages of pinless blade i dont understand im new to this.
insanet3 Pinned blades have a small pin going horizontally through the top and bottom of the blade to allow for installation on the scroll saw, pinless blades do not need the pin to be installed on the saw. Most scrollsaw projects involve very small and detailed internal cuts that require very small holes to be drilled in the project to feed the blade through, usually 1/16th" or smaller. Because of the pins on a pinned blade, you must drill much larger holes in your project to fit the pin through, usually about 1/4" diameter. This is just too big to make detailed projects. If you are making just external cuts, a pinned blade is fine, if you want to make detailed projects you will need pinless blades. Some scroll saws can use both types of blades while some only take pinned blades and some take only pinless blades. It is important that you know what you are going to be using the saw for before you purchase a saw. One type of blade is not necessarily better than the other, but a saw that takes pinless blades is much more versatile and is usually a much better choice in the long run.
how many TPI were you blades for this video, it seemed like it made some pretty small turns ect. would that be the 15-28 type one? Im just getting started and I bet im going to break some
Hi Kelly, I have never found the teeth per inch rating very helpful for picking blades. I learned a while ago to keep it simple, 95% of my cutting is done with a #3,#5 or #7 Flying Dutchman blade mikesworkshop.com/collections/blades/products/ultra-reverse. The chances are pretty good that no matter what I cut, I can do it with one of those three blades, regardless of thickness or hardness of the wood. Because there are so many different options for scroll saw blades, people do tend to overthink blades, my advice, just get some blades and enjoy making your projects, most of all, relax, have fun and be patient with yourself. You will be as good as me in no time...Bob

scott garvey Hey Scott, thanks. I had the old Delta as a backup saw for a few years, never used it much but it was an adequate saw. A variable speed is a bit better than a two speed, but by no means is it a deal breaker. If you are new to scrolling and this is going to be your 1st saw, then it's a good saw to start with. It takes a special tool to change the blades and is a bit cumbersome to get use to, but that's just an annoyance. Make sure you secure it to a nice solid surface to help cut down on vibration. I've seen these saws in my local Craigslist ads for about $50- $60 which would be worth the money. Good luck.
gotcha bob...yup...lol,,that is where I found it on CL for 60 bucks !! I also saw the dremel motosaw I think it is,,,smaller...hasa mini table ..but seems like it works fairly well with balsa and small stuff . That was what I was doing,,ship modeling ,, have you any thoughts on those saws...i think u can pick them up for 100 bucks or so at lowes or HD .
scott garvey The motosaw is merely a toy, you can do the same thing with the Delta that you can do with a motosaw and a lot more. I see no practical use for it other than cutting balsa wood.
