Hi guys. In this video I run through how to set your camera up for Sports Photography and the camera settings I use for Sports Photography on my Canon 1Dx. We all use various different settings and methods, so it would be great to hear how you guys set up too, for ISO, Shutter speed, White Balance, Colours, Aperture, Focussing and Exposure.
As usual, leave any questions or comments below and I will reply as soon as I can.

I'm still fairly new to my 1DX Mark ii, purchased October of 2019. One thing that stood out to me from your video, I use auto ISO as well quite a bit, and have taken advantage of Min/Max ISO settings to help limit the cameras choices to still give me some control. But you used the "Set" button with the front dial to quickly change exposure compensation, that was cool. I am now setup that way, thanks!!!
Hi Trevor. Auto ISO is great for controlling the exposure with the set button and top wheel. Very occasionally I get caught out but on the whole I stick with this set up. Like you say, it's also greta for setting your min/max levels too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Trevor.
Thanks for sharing these, Mark. Most interesting takeaway for me was your use of cloud AWB as a default setting. Another useful ‘reminder’ (to me anyway) was auto ISO. Looking forward to catching more videos.
Hi Andrew. Thanks for watching, glad it was useful. Yes, the cloud awb just gives a touch more colour I find. And nearly always shoot in Auto ISO but keep an eye on it too. Thanks Andrew
I saw someone mention setting another button with different exposure settings for when you're at a ground that has sun and shadow and this has shown me what I needed to do to set that up. Very useful, thank you Mark!
That’s great, glad the video helped you out👍🏻
Mark your set up to register quick settings for AF-ON button is a great idea! I never knew I could do that! Great way to have an option to switch very fast without having to change manually!
Thank you for the clarifications from yesterday’s video... and appreciate the walk-through on your settings! Love the AF for panning shot usage!
Hi Stephen. Yes, bit of a slip up on yesterdays video! Yes, the AF-on button can be nicely utilised. I just forget to use it some games!
I’ve shot quite a bit of baseball , and found back-button autofocus to be an amazing tool for that. In baseball, if you know the game, you can generally make an educated guess as to exactly where the most interesting play will be. If there are runners on first and second and a right-handed batter, I can be almost certain that a fly-out to left field will result in a runner sliding into third base, so I use back-button to pre-focus on third base and then don’t need to worry about the shutter button messing up my focus during the chaos of the play.
It definitely took me a while to get used to, though
Hi. I keep reading great reviews on BBF! Time I gave it another go I think! Thanks for getting in touch and thanks for your support.
Great video always interesting to hear how many photographers have different settings for sport, I use back focusing button did take a bit getting used to it , never used Auto iso maybe will give it a try
Hi William, thanks. Yes, it’s good to compare settings, helps us all out. Re BBF I’ve tried several times to use it but just can’t get up to speed with it, so always revert back! Perhaps now would be a good time to have a practice! Yes, give auto iso a try. Keeps you on your toes when in varying light but can be a good advantage.
Thanks! This helps a lot. Most of the events I shoot are in the open and brightly lit (I shoot off-road, 4x4 races in the desert) and I think I'll try to start using manual mode for the next round of events.
Thanks for watching👍🏻 Yes, I swear by manual! Good to be in total control. Good luck
Mark, keep the info coming 👍. Its great to find a channel and photographer that goes through the set ups and examples like you do. What are your thoughts on mirror less cameras.
Thanks Robin. Mmmm mirrorless, they’re not far off now. Heard comments on their speed not quite being there yet! Also they don’t seem to be built as strong! Saying that I’ve not used one yet, only going on press room talk👍🏻
Just Got myself a 1DX MK1 ,very very good helpful lesson Mark, i will certainly set my camera up as this tuition, will keep an eye out on you video info on you tube , may find something for my 5D MK111.
Nice one Harry, glad it helped. Get in touch if you need any more tips👍🏻
More great information. It's easy to forget that the IDX has so many ways to configure the buttons to suit.
Thanks👍🏻 Yes, the more I look into configurations, the more there is! It’s addictive.
Another brilliant and educational video Mark!
Keep Safe
-Daniel
Thanks Daniel. Glad you enjoyed it👍🏻
Hi Mark Hope your well fella? Awesome video and really helpful, I've started taking pics of my son's football team so all your help is greatly appreciated.
Hi Ash. Thanks for watching👍🏻 Glad the videos have helped you out
Thanks for the video Mark, invaluable information as always👍Pete.
Ah thanks Pete, appreciate your support. I'll try and keep trickling videos out. Keeps me out of trouble, ha!
Good info. I've been shooting sport for a few years now but still learnt some new things.
Ah that’s great, pleased it’s helped out in some way. Thanks for watching👍🏻
I'm thinking of upgrading to a 1DX (can't afford a new camera) so this is a very helpful video. Currently using a battered Canon 40D with a non-IS 70-200mm L lens, as I'm shooting grass roots football with no budget at all for a better body. I usually shoot in aperture priority mode in the sweet spot of the lens (f3.2 or 3.5) with auto ISO. This usually gives me more than enough shutter speed. On very bright days I lower the ISO. I cope, but would prefer more control. Can't get the hang of back button focusing or shooting manually, even though I know pros shoot sports manually.
Very interesting! I sadly I've only got an entry level Canon 100D so I only have very basic versions of these functions, but I'll definitely be trying out some of the ones I do have on Friday! I usually just shoot in Sports mode which, yanno does an ok job as I never seem to be bale to set up the camera for good shots myself.
Thanks for watching Jamie. Hopefully you can put some of the settings to good use on your 100D. Hope your sports photography is coming on okay, good luck
Very clear! easy to follow
Thanks for watching Richard. Great that it’s helped out👍🏻
Hi Mark 👋🏻 lately I’ve been watching all ur videos and that’s all great.. 👍🏻👏🏻 thank you for sharing ur experiences 🙏🏻
I got a question for you.. I’ve got a nice offering to buy this 1DX in a very good condition which the shutter count is less than 1000 😝
Did you think is still worthy at this day ? im planning to shoot mostly sports..
Thank you for ur advice 🙏🏻
Keep it up make a great videos 💪🏻👏🏻
The 1DX is still a beast, still Professional level bit of kit. If its a grood price, I would not let it go, I still use mine every week, along with a R6mkii, and it aint going anywhere
Very informative for Canon users specifically but can adapt to other camera systems.
Your making me feel guilty only talking Canon here! Good job your a great photographer and can adapt it to your Nikon!
Hi Mark great video as usual, can I ask what Case setting you use within the camera and when in that particular setting when you push the RATE button what do you adjust your settings too thanks Stew.
Hi Stewart, thanks. I use CASE 2. I briefly covered it recently, 8:20 in this video ruclips.net/video/KDoo6nh-3pM/видео.html
Accel/Decel should be on -2 NOT +2!
Not sure what you mean regarding the RATE button?
Mark Kerton Cheers mate got it, I use Case 2 but my acceleration/ deceleration is slightly set up different to yours. The Rate button is on a 7dmk2 not on a 1 dx I’ve noticed. Cheers Mark
Thanks Mark.
Anytime. Thanks for your support!
Thanks Mark, I enjoyed that. I have a question about what file format you shoot in. When sending your photos off to the desk are you sending them in jpeg format? I noticed that you set your white balance to Cloudy which is only applicable to jpegs!
Hi Kelly. Well spotted, yes I always work in jpeg. The file sizes are plenty good enough for the press outlets. I will switch to RAW for landscapes and aviation for example when I’m shooting for myself👍🏻
Mark Kerton cheers mate! 👍🏻
Hi Mark, I do quite a bit of night football photography was wondering what setting do you use for your photos and would you show them as well thanks Jeff
Hi Jeff. All depends on the stadium lighting really. Obviously I try and keep the iso down as much as possible. Think the worst game I covered was a non-league match where I was down to 650th at f2.8 on iso 6400! I usually try and stick to 1250th-1600th if I can at f2.8 - f3.2 at iso 1600ish, depending on the flood lights of course. Hope that helps Jeff
Mark Kerton I’m afraid our ground the lights are not the best, but I did hear that they were due to be updated during the lockdown can only hope thank you all the same
I just picked up a used 1DX with low shutter count on it. My question is regarding how high ISO would you push this camera to if needed. I shoot high school sports for a media news group and when I am behind a football (American) endzone, there isn't any light so I struggle with trying to keep the shutter speed up high enough without getting too much shadowing. I my 5D M3 I have went up to 10,000/12,280 ISO without it looking to bad. I would also need faster shutter speeds indoors when shooting a volleyball big hitter, such a dynamic explosion with some of the top level hitters. Thank you for your help.
You’ll see a huge difference with the 1Dx regarding ISO’s compared to the 5d2. It really can be pushed to its limits under the lights I love my 1Dx for that one reason👍🏻
I'm just getting the hang of my "new" 1Dx mk1. I usually use M-fn2 for starting to shoot movies as a quick start and the button next to it on the front for DoF preview. My trouble, as you said in your video is getting muscle memory to work and I keep hitting the wrong button and starting video rather than DoF preview. Any suggestions for getting rounf this?
Hi Benjamin. Thanks for your comment. Other than trying a different button for your settings, I would say the best way to improve is repartition, repartition. Practice makes perfect as they say. Have you tried setting DoF to a different button?
I’ll give those settings a go the next time I’m at West Ham. Nice one mate.
Mr T Yes, defo worth a try👍🏻 When we’re finally back in the game, let us know how you get on
Cheers Mark
Anytime. Keep safe!
Another Informative video. Do you use similar settings shooting at night games? I tend to shoot in jpeg format during the day and RAW at night. I can then sort out the noise in LR from shooting at high ISO’s with my 5D3. As you know, there are so many night games in non-league football due to fixture pile ups throughout the season, postponements because of the weather, water logged pitches etc., and most floodlights don’t have enough power to beam out to lower the ISO setting. The reason I invested in the 1DX2 was because of glowing reports about the noise levels and performance of this camera but yet to use it because of this pandemic.
Hi David. I tend to go down to f2.8 on both lenses and then set up accordingly. In the past, one game I remember shooting, I was down to 640th, a nightmare! The floodlights were so dim it was a real tester! Good idea on the raw at night👍🏻
Mark, that’s interesting. I would have thought Premier clubs to have superior lighting 🤔
Oh yeh, Prem & most champ clubs are fine David. I was referring to when I work at lower league games like yourself.
Hi Mark, i have a Canon 5D mk iv that i use for dog action photography with a canon 70-200 2.8. but I can't find the right settings in AF mode. many times the autofocus in burst fails to hold the subjects, i've tried case 2 and 4 and the image priority in iservo are on focus priority.
Hi Paolo. Mmmmm? So you’re in AI Servo. Are you using single point focusing? And what sort of shutter speed are you on?
Hi Mark, been trying out some of your settings, but I remember in one of your videos you were talking about the AF Case 2 setting and how you set up your Tracking sensitivity, Accel./decel. tracking and AF pt auto switching, but I can't remember which video it was on. Can you point me in the right direction please?
Hiya. That’ll be the second prem video, thumbnails has the 400 white cover👍🏻
Thanks Mark, so helpful.
Anytime👍🏻
Thanks for sharing.
Most of the time, I shoot at nights under the mercy of the floodlights that it would be either ISO 3200 or 6400
But I yet to try setting the ISO in auto when I would play 100 to 320 during my day assignments, shall try it out one day.
Most of the time I set my settings at 1/1250, f2.8
Hi. Thanks for getting in touch. Yes, have a go with AUTO ISO, it can be a great help in certain conditions.
@@MarkKerton sure will do, thanks 🙂
@@kopohui3872 Brilliant. Let us know how you get on
@@MarkKerton sure will do again 🙂
Hi Mark,
Just to drop a note to share my experience using AUTO ISO.

Wasn't a good weather and lack of sunlight with the ISO auto set at 400, did some brightening on the two shots though.
With regards,
Po Hui
Are your shooting 5.0 at night with a 70-200? I’m struggling with my images I’m shooting a Tamron 70-200 on a canon 1dx mark ii maybe it’s me using TV mode not sure but I’m always on 2.8.
Muchas gracias por la info. slds desde chile

How to set up the Canon 1DX to look good at weddings and shoot portraits in color?
I am new to photography finally purchased canon 70-200 f2.8 non is i shoot with canon 600d wanting to upgrade to canon 1dx what aperture do you recommend? I've used 2.8 but don't seem to be sharp i just photo my daughter kids rugby 9 year olds daytime
Hello! which case do you use and what settings are there ? please respond 🙏
Hi Salavat. Check out this video at 8:25 where I go through my case settings👍🏻 ruclips.net/video/KDoo6nh-3pM/видео.html
Hi there, I am trying to set my picture style Sharpness 7 as you have shown in the video, but I have the mark idx iii and the Sharpness tab is in 3 sections Strength, Fineness & Threshold. I am a bit confused on this. Can you help? Thanks so much
I would say Jennifer all you need to adjust is the strength on the mk3 Not hundred percent sure so perhaps increase it to the max on the strength slider take a few frames and see how they look. Do let us know as I will be interested to see how the mark three operates
Did you say you do not use back button focusing? It thought I heard you say you did and then I thought you said you didn't. Not sure. Thanks for the video!
Hi Kent. Haha, sorry for the confusion! No, I don’t use BBF. I’ve tried several times but I just can’t shake the shutter button focus habit! Thanks for your support👍🏻
It's a bit different, usually one hears sports photographers singing the praises of BBF, but he did mention he uses the star/asterisk button as focus lock, so when you think about it, he is still using a back button on the camera to control focusing in a manner he is used to and comfortable with. Similar goals, just a different way of doing it. Thought it was very interesting, and you can't argue with his results, so it definitely works for him.
Hi Trevor. Thanks for getting in touch. Yes, I still use a back button setting as such, just not for focussing. I MUST give it another try though, always good to practice new methods. Keeps us ticking over! Thanks for the support Trevor and keep safe👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Thanks for sharing your knowledge and posting videos. I dont think you need to change your method, your results speak for themselves, love your work!
hey mate I can the toy AI Servo to stay on swimmer coming toward me on both 7Ds I have... am I missing something do u know?
Hi Steve . Are you using single point focus, just the one little black square on your subject?
Hi, you use pocketwizards for your remote camera, will the remote camera operate only when you press the 2nd PW or do you have it set up to operate the remote shutter some other way?
Hi Paul, yes, the remote is triggered whenever I shoot on the 70-200 OR if I’ve set the Chanel up on the same number as a neighbouring colleagues remote, he too will trigger my remote. Some guys use foot/pedal triggers still as sometimes the PW fails to trigger! Hope that helps👍🏻
@@MarkKerton thank you, I think I might invest in a set. Great videos by the way.
Thank Paul, appreciate your support. PW’s will definitely come in handy for sure. Can be used in a variety of techniques👍🏻
Great video. do you shoot JPG or RAW?
Thanks Ramez. Thanks for supporting the channel. Always jpg for sports. Faster to send and the papers only print in low dpi. RAW for landscapes and portraits etc👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Thank you ,nice channel .
i'm bird photographer and Motorsport.
nice to try different sports unfortunately this year no activity no sports.

hello, this setting work for canon 6D + Tamron 70 - 300 VC USD too ? ty for sharing
Hi Muhammed. Yes, if the menu is the same it should work very well. It’s all to personal taste however but a good starting point to tweak👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Ty Mark, Have a Nice Day !
how do you feel about shooting in Aperture Priority?
Hi Angie. Thanks for getting in touch. I’ve always shot in manual, simply for the total control. AV is a great mode and still very useful to get started with. Are you using it for sport? Have you tried TV mode?
i have a 1dxii. i use it for landscape, astro or evryday use i use most the 50mm 1.2. i have shott a formla f1 boat race that focus is so good with 70-200mm 2x exstender settings 1/8000 f5.6 iso 3200
Hi Max, Wow, F1 Boat Racing, would love to have a go at shooting that! Hopefully I will be adding a mkii to my kit soon, once we get going again! Yes, the 70-200 with the x2 is a good combination on a nice light day. Thanks for getting in touch Max.
Mark Kerton i Will adding a Canon 300mm f.2.8 mk1 soon with the 2x exstender to get closer to sports / wildelife. I have used the 1dx ii in -40 in norway, to photograph the stars
That’ll be a nice addition to your kit for sure Max. Yes, the mkii is an impressive body! -40 is a very good test for it, wow!
Mark Kerton mayby to save more to get the 300mm 2.8 mk2 or sigma 500mm f4 almost same price used
The other idea Max would be to look around for a 400 2.8 depending on budget of course!
Hi Mark. Ive just used the 1dx mk2 for the first time. I found that at 2.8 parts of the picture were super crisp whilst some parts in the same area werent. Any ideas?
Hi buddy. What were your shooting and which lens?
@@MarkKerton Sport using a Canon 300m 2.8. Never had the issue with the 5d I used last week but this new body is like going from a Skoda to a Ferrari
@@MarkKerton Hi Mark I was shooting Rugby and I was using a Canon 300m f2.8. However a development has appeared. The camera I received is broken...the focusing mirror fell out.
I would still appreciate any tips though
Oh no way! That’s 100% the problem then! Have you had it fixed now?
@@MarkKerton I managed to get a replacement sent out. I'm hoping to use it Friday night for the Sale Sharks Rugby game.

Do you shoot sports in Jpg Mark?
Hiya. Yes, always jpg. Quicker sending and the papers only print in 72dpi👍🏻
@@MarkKerton Thanks I thought as much. Enjoyed the video.
Anytime👍🏻
Do you shoot jpegs or raw with sports?
Hi Scott. Always jpg’s for sport. Clients only require small file sizes plus it really helps with wire speeds👍🏻
@@MarkKerton thank you Mark 👍🏻
Hi Mark , At this point of the video you seem to use the back wheel to adjust exposure comp , am I missing something ruclips.net/video/2sUS-DRZ-XM/видео.html , as you say set up the "SET Button" and the top wheel to adjust . Cheers . Roy
Ha ha , seen why now .. Thanks Mark
Hi Roy, sorry, missed this message! Yes, sorry to cause any confusion. I hold down the set button and scroll the top wheel for plus/minus exposure. Hope thats cleared it up.
Do you think this camera is suitable to shoot kids/toddlers?
Hi Charles. The 1Dx is a great body for sport for sure. I’d say a better body for children’s portraits would be a 5Dmk4 as it has a bigger sensor. Hope that helps.
@@MarkKerton but since toddlers and babies.move a lot I thought the 1dx could be suitable
Think if I had the choice I’d go for the sensor size and less fps I think👍🏻

@@MarkKerton thank you so so much you 100% super star. Love all your work and videos
Really interested to learn that you don't use BBF. I do, but have never been convinced that it makes me quicker or more accurate than using the shutter button alone.
Hi Nick. I do sometimes feel bit behind the times using the shutter button to focus! Just have struggled to convert myself round to it! I ought to have another go really!
@@MarkKerton I'd stick to what you do so well Mark!
Thanks Nick👍🏻
I find a lot of new people think BBF is supposed to help improve your sharpness, that BBF is a better way to focus that actually improves IQ, but its not. Its just a different way to focus, it doesn't magically improve focus quality. What it does do, it gives users ability to work in AI Servo & Single Shot at same time without having to go into menu & change settings, which takes time and distracts from play. Imagine a corner kick, you are using middle focus point, you hit BBF to achieve focus, then let go because you want to recompose & follow the rule of thirds to give room to the left of the frame for ball to travel. You can do all this with BBF and not go into your menu to change from AI Servo to Single Shot. Leave your camera on AI Servo, when you dont want the camera to AF, release the bbf button, and boom, your in single shot mode without ever going into the menu. Mark mentioned he programmed his star/astrik button as focus lock, that's practically doing the same thing, just another method of doing it. Thanks for sharing Mark, great to hear your tips and camera settings, very much appreciated.
Thanks Trevor. And thanks for sharing how you set up. One reason for me starting this Chanel is for discussion and hearing about all the different methods we use. So really appreciate your input👍🏻
