- The Skydio 2 beacon is, in my opinion, the ultimate way to fly this amazing drone. This video is a tutorial on how the beacon works. It's a whole new experience, and it makes me want to fly it more and more.

so Tello was classed as a selfi-drone. i would say this makes the skydio a more advanced plus plus selfi-drone with tracking features, yer interesting niche for the drone market.

Cool video. It makes me wonder if DJI could make a beacon that would retroactively work with existing MAVIC 2's. The beacon use case is really why I got my MAVIC 2 (before the Skydio2 was released).

Nice video Russ. I believe that the Skydio 2 was designed to work with the phone and the beacon, the controller was a later add on to please the flyers that wanted only to fly the drone. That's why they haven't developed their own controller. I think that Skydio started a new kind of drones like when GoPro came as a new kind of camera.
So the beacon is the real Skydio 2 controller.

You’re right about the new drone folks. There are almost no good vids on using and accessing all the modes and features. They fly it but don’t show how to go about getting into different modes.

Hi Russ, Just received my Skydio 2 and flew for the second time connecting the beacon and the controller. I believe you can connect both and if the controller looses track the beacon picks things up.
Hey Russ I saw in another RUclips video that if you let the drone take off from your hand it will automatically find you right away. Maybe that is why it was behind you at first. That is what Skydio told another RUclipsr doing a review on it.
Nice user experience and explanation for the Skydio 2's Beacon controller logic. It looks like fun and I see strong potential for commercial applications as well as b-roll and some primary media for creating or gaining intelligence for high-density obstacles environment. Thanks and happy holidays Russ. We have similar weather with snow, ice, and low temperatures. Say, what jacket is that you have, looks warm and of a cool design (no pun intended). And the boots? They look warmer than my North Face boots.
Thanks! The cost is from Kuhl. The boots are the warmest boots I have ever owned. They use them here in the oil field. They are Baffins. Both products come at a price, but two of the best investments I've ever made!

Motion track: I think the best way to explain this is when you want to keep the same background in your shot. So, no matter which way you move, it tracks you in the center of the shot but keeps the same view in the background. In other words, the drone follows you, but keeps the same compass heading relative to your position. It would be worth making another video using that explanation so everyone understands easily. Thanks for the great tutorial!

Regarding the "Audio won't be as good" on the Osmo Action, I thought it sounded good and picked up just the right amount of ambient sound (the Skydio flying). Were you using the Rode Wireless Go with the Osmo or the Sony? Thanks again! I hope you and the family had a nice Christmas.

@@51Drones In case you didn't hear, there was a recent firmware update for the Osmo Action that removed most of the video lag at 4K and supposedly improved sound quality when using an external mic.

Hey! I'm considering getting this drone for a few things, but I want to ask what exactly the drone tracks here. I have the mavic 2 zoom and the active track doesn't work very well because it's only visual, and if it loses line of sight it usually stops working entirely. My question is: is the beacon the ONLY thing the drone tracks? Or does it need to be a human holding the beacon? Could I strap the beacon to a dog? Could I glue it to another drone and track that? Or does it specifically need to be a human?

Ordered 5 months ago and finally received. It with through the woods with me avoiding trees and branches. I got worried when leaves started falling around it but it did not get confused. Not sure how you got yours to fly so low in fix point mode. Thank you for the getting started tips.

Not sure, but would expect either a Mavic 3 or a totally new series with the same OA as the Skydio.
Hi Russ, that is a very interesting Drone. Now if DJI Drones only had the same optical avoidance ability .
DJI? At least this is an American Built Drone.
I'd be surprised if the Mavic 3 wasn't as good, if not better. This drone has a lot of hype but I'm hearing it's got a lot of flaws.

@@exil3dlivecom agreed. It's got many flaws that a lot of the glory boys on youtube aren't talking about. If you want a totally unbiased opinion and solid reviews, check out originaldobo and his reviews. He goes over both the positives and negatives of this drone.

Another very helpful video - thank you! It appears that the Beacon is great if you are to be the subject of the Skydio camera. Your first video was mostly of a railroad trestle and surrounding landscape - could you have shot this using the Beacon for control? If I will do a mix of selfie drone shots plus surrounding landscape, would you recommend spending the extra $150 to get the Controler, relay on the Beacon (if it is even possible), or use rely on my phone assuming I am staying within 200-300 meters? Keep up the great work!
If you are staying that close, I think the phone would be enough. The beacon is just so much fun!

Hi Russ, just discovered your channel. Very much enjoy your videos. Are you still flying the skydio 2? Just curious if you have a different opinion of it now. I recently bought one and was flying in some what similar conditions and it crashed into a tree the lost it leaves. And it was a result of not recognizing smaller bare branch. The later scenes of this video with you on the ATV are similar to my crash when on a escooter in a parking lot with a few trees. Unfortunately I don't think skydio will cover the crash of it is a result of a thin branch. Kinda means in winter stay away from leafless trees 😕
Did you try scene shooting with the beacon only?
How does that compare to the controller?
Does it recognise pressing multiple buttons on the beacon?
Can you control the gimbal with the beacon?
How is controlling the drone with the phone through the beacon?

I got email today and downloaded their .pdf unpublished Proposal on the new Laws. Apparently all Drones w/in the next 2-3 years are required to have it.....? =)

Haha few things. I did not want to watch this video because of all the damn snow. LoL. And I am glad you could not get the drone to go backwards when in steer mode. I thought mine was broken.

Thanks did your Beacon came with a strap? Also I thought Skydio recommend that we use both the Beacon and the Phone Skydio App at every flight for backup.
Chris They do, but for the life of me, i can’t figure out how to connect my phone to the beacon without things disconnecting. Has anyone seen a tutorial on that?
@@glenncharles6622 oh I see; I am still waiting for my Sports Package so I would imagine at least 1 more month since I got it right after New Year. Perhaps present your question to Skydio they have flight training and that young lady seems to always provide feedback to the youtube comments.
I bought this drone so I could have it follow me while riding my dirt bike the issue is trying to get sound using the beacon it does not connect to my phone well it says it’s connected but it doesn’t work have you experienced anything like this also the first time I tried it it would not let me fly with the beacon and just put the phone down in my pocket it may be fly with the phone

Not yet. That's a beta. Billy and Ken just got a little trigger happy. Supposedly it's available to everyone in the next day or two.

When you fly with this stick, Do you need a phone at all?

I doubt it, dji takes off whem ever it wants. With this drone once you hit the end of the golden hour where the light is optimum.... the skydio3 says "cannot take off". THAT SUCKS

There isn't even a way to know if you are filming or not, unless you hold the phone in your other hand and in best case scenario you are filming non-stop which calls for lot of editing after the fact.
I can't see what was the design reason for such a BIG MISS on Skydio part.
My ideal setup filming my road and mountain rides is using the beacon only, Yes, A single small gadget that can be put in and out my jersey pocket while riding. No phone and definitely not the controller.
I realize after watching your video that it is not going to happen ...
BTW I am on Batch 3... maybe not anymore...

DJI needs a beacon for their drones.
No. I, buying it for scene shooting. I don't do selfies. But I do need spherical OA as I fly close to water and cliffs. I will not buy a M2P. It doesn't have full OA. And their customer service is appalling.
Please don't assume only selfie people want this drone. That's not cool.
I like the M2P active track MUCH better… and you can see the footage being recorded. This seems like a toy.
but the most stupid is , skydio is never can mass produce now...you need to wait a whole year for per-order , and paid for the full price and then continue to wait forever.
