I’ve always been a huge fan of paisleys, but they aren’t for every occasion. The tone on tone with hidden paisleys might be just the ticket!! Nice work.
This is easy. Any bespoke house will have options based on the material and pattern you decided upon for your suit. You should listen to their option choices and make the best decision based on the colour options that resonate with you.
Great video! I wear jackets everyday for work. I had no idea to even consider jacket linings. Great information for the future when I buy more jackets.
Great video! You should try doing a video ranking your favorite 007 looks from Connery to Craig (casual corporate and black tie) and how you would correct and/or modernize them.
Hey Brian, may I suggest that you add your "Worst Custom Suit Mistakes & Regrets" video to the custom suit playlist because I found that to be another really useful video on the subject that you made.
Great content. I've worked for a company that sold made to measure and it definitely is one of the major fumbling blocks for people. The five points are spot on! I always showed people in two categories what linings would be used of the rack (complementary) and ones that would show personality (bold).
Great video, You said the fabric for lining is bemberg. But i think the fabric is cupro, and the conpany that makes the best cupro is called bemberg. Correct me if im wrong
YES! A custom Coco lining would be awesome! Jokes aside, great vid. This dictionary looks like a handy book. I personally like my linings to be a bit colorful, I think it's a nice tool to add more personality to the jacket. Somewhat like a pocket square or a tie, but more subtle. Also, speaking of MTM/bespoke, another pet peeve of mine - I like my initials inscribed on the lining. My wedding suit also has my wife's. It makes it way more personal, and being inside the suit makes it, again - subtle.
Hey there, wondering if you could do a video about dressing for older men. I'm in my late 50's and I'm starting to be aware of age appropriate style. Thanks!
Hey Brian, i've seen your video on your sunglasses collection, but it would be really cool if you could make a video on the best value sunglasses brands. Keep up the great work
I went with a blue and yellow paisley lining for my wedding suit. It’s definitely a statement but it was my wedding suit so I thought I’d go more bold.
@@hespokestyle still like it, though I had my wedding right as everything was shutting down for COVID (we limited it to 2 witnesses, the officiant, and a photographer) so I haven’t had the chance to wear it since.
Just did a purple windowpane in bamboo so since it's a more "fun" jacket, i went with a fun bemberg with the jolly roger. For my previous MTM suits i've done a more conservative navy bemberg as it fits the intent of the garment more appropriately.
The interesting aspect in terms of lining is, that nobody sees it except yourself (okay, maybe when you take your Jacket on or off in front of others). So you could say, why not choose a red lining for a black suit? I would like it, but it might look too fashionable. Maybe it's better to look effortless.
Back in the day, I wore bespoke suits. My suitmaker in NYC suggested half-lined for summer. I prefer fully lined regardless of the season. Do you have an opinion on that? The UPS man visited yesterday, thank you for your kindness and thoughtfulness. Have you profiled Michael Andrews and where to buy the products? The pocket square is stunning.
I always rock suits with no lining, or just in the sleeves that is. I just love the unstructured jacket indefinitely. However I always choose a statement lining ( for example 30's mafia pictures or pin up girls) because they are only visible when you turn your sleeves inside out. A neat and still subtle representation of my style imo.
is that a samuelsohn jacket at 1:11? I have several from them that I am quite happy with, as far as linings go the only one i've ever regretted was an olive green on a cobalt blue suit.
No.1 sir.....❤️❤️❤️ also can you suggest substitute to hopsack as its quite hard to find here in my country ..... main concern can be worn as a seperate too
@@hespokestyle was one of those things where it was like "this is a pretty plain blue suit, let's have fun with the lining, that'll jazz it up just a tiny bit!" So I opted for turquoise lining. Which just for the suit lining I think works fine. But I've now got this nice navy vest that I'd love to wear with my grey suits for that contrast but if I do I then literally cannot remove the suit jacket. Hahaha
Great topic, good explained. Thank you for another great video, Brian. I have a question about contrasting colored linings: I've heard that you shouldn't use a very dark lining (like navy) with a light colored suit jacket (for example khaki), because it could show through the fabric of the jacket. Is this something I have to keep in mind, when ordering a khaki summer suit made of cotton?
Thank you for this video! This is something that will definitely help me in my custom suit experience. Also, can you list all the style related books you have?
The only thing I can say for certain is that you should *always* get a lining in the sleeves. When you don and doff the jacket the sleeves experience the most friction. With a fitted jacket especially you're gonna have a bad time with them getting caught, rubbing and in general not laying properly and being very annoying. They will also wear out much faster. Since relatively very little heat is produced from your arms and you don't really ever see the sleeve lining, there's no reason not to get it imo. cheers
What is the basted garment you tried on? I got a bit curious by the look of it :) The fabric and colour would suggest it's a morning coat but it's cut like a white tie tailcoat. Is it one or the other or something completley different? :)
Just remind that there's nothing wrong with full lining. I've seen a lot of guys encourage others to purchase half/no lining suits as if they are more superior per se. But actually, full lining suits are just as well as others, it only depends on what you like with your own suits.
^This. The heat gain of a fully lined jacket is marginal I would say if you're working with a bemberg or cupro lining. Something I enjoy though with unlined jackets is that it makes it very easy to alter yourself and saves time when you don't have to worry about the linings.
This video is entirely invalid. There are absolutely no rules or guidelines in even the most conservative menswear circles about the color or pattern of your lining. Like suspenders and underwear, lining is not meant to be seen, and usually isn't seen, so the only "rule" about it is that you should have fun. I'm a lawyer -- if I went to court and saw a loud print lining peek out from a conservative business suit, I wouldn't bat an eyelash.
I thought this video was about types of lining. Full lined, half-lined, unlined. Would love to see that.
Good topic.
Great video as always. All of your color combination choices are timeless, classic, and elegant.
Thanks so much!

This is great. I've always thought contrasting but complementary colors look great. That Solaro really struck my eye. Thanks, Brian, as always.
You are so welcome!
“The best decision for you, but one that you will not regret” well said 👍
Thanks, javi!
That brown/rust combo at 3:10 is a winner, for sure.
Some shops also offer a choice between materials for lining. The one I use offers silk linings, but they're a lot more expensive
Thanks for chiming in.

I’ve been using the Wada book for years (along with the other volume). It’s the best color book I’ve ever owned.
Golden advice and that's such an awesome dog.

Yes, Bemberg is the brand name of Cupro lining. However, they are often used interchangeably.

Definitely!
Well done. I am thinking about polka dots for my next suit lining.
Go for it!

What about some just bold colors? Like a red or a gold lining. After all most people don't actually see the lining until you take your jacket off.
Very informative

True.
Yes, for sure. It is negligible but it you're talking about a summer jacket, unlined is always nice.
Long Live Brian....❤️

I've ruined at least three suits with this decision. I'd suggest the first two or go bold, but I've ruined suits so be careful with my advice.
